First, We Kill All the Lawyers (Donovan Trait Book 1)by Seelie Kay – Review by Beverly Finnie

First, We Kill All the LawyersFirst, We Kill All the Lawyers by Seelie Kay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Seelie Kay wrote an interesting story with First We Kill All the Lawyers. I’m obsessed with everything vampire, so I couldn’t resist jumping into this book. I loved it! Vampires, murder, humor, oh my!
Donovan is intriguing, a 300+ year old vampire turned lawyer for the little guy in the human world. Unfortunately for him, someone tried to kill him twice. Not realizing it wouldn’t be as easy as she assumed it would be.
Shirley Magnusen, a judge in the Chicago Courts circuit also becomes a victim when an attempt by the same person is made on her life. She’s also in love with Donovan.
This story explores the trials and tribulations of trying to find this person who is killing lawyers and threatening their lives.
Not your typical go round with vampire fiction. The vampires don’t feed on humans, they evolved to be able to tolerate the sun. Some have even had children. It’s an interesting take on an area of fiction that has evolved rapidly over the past 25 years. Which I love and accept who heartedly. If Vampires are your thing, I beg you to take a gander for yourself. I’m sure it will be intriguing!

I’ve read a couple books by Seelie Kay and this is definitely an author that doesn’t disappoint. I have always enjoyed books and movies featuring vampires and this was no exception. I loved both main characters, Donovan and Shirley and felt like they were an adorable couple with great chemistry. I like that the book has a little bit of everything, including humor and snark that brought a smile to my face. Definitely a fast, fun, five star read!

Lawyer Donovan Trait and Judge Shirley Magnusen are back and it is the day before their wedding, Donovan is doing his usual as he pursues a case for those who cannot represent themselves and is filling the courtroom with his usual pizazz, so as he has an early finish, he decides to visit his bride to be while she is on a break. He asks her why she hasn’t taken the day off to prepare for the wedding, she responds that his mother has helped with it all, but that the minister is flapping a bit and that he should call him, but soon Donovan is his usual irresistible self and she is totally swayed by it, at least until she is called away.

As the day of the wedding dawns, Shirley is getting ready and is thinking about her turning, about what it will mean for her future and how happy she is with the whole situation, apart from maybe the press and paparazzi who will be waiting outside. They next head to meet with the Vampire Council so that they can give their final blessing to their union, but Shirley is feeling a little light headed and nauseous, but she just puts it down to wedding jitters, what with all the pomp and ceremony, however, she has to have a health appointment just in case it is to do with her turning, but what the results reveal to Donovan is about to change their lives again. It turns out that Shirley is pregnant and as much as they want to shout it from the rooftops, they decide to keep the news quiet until after the ceremony, which they immediately regret when they are called before the Council for a trial.

The opening statements are made, the evidence is presented, as well as the reasoning behind why this isn’t a breach of the marital agreement they made, however, the Council has other ideas and they deem the Traits as guilty of breaching their marital agreement and as such drastic punishment must be meted out, instead, the Traits flee and make their way to an island run by Vampire Nuns, but will they be able to keep out of reach of the Vampire Council, or will their growing family be torn apart before they even have a chance to live? This is a paranormal romance with an edge of danger and rebellion as you travel along the path the Traits are forging to reach calm waters and the safety they crave.

This is the second book in the Donovan Trait series. I enjoyed the first one and was excited for this one to come out. Seelie Kay did not disappoint. I love that she does not abide by the “normal” vampire rules.
Donovan finally gets to marry his love, Shirley. What to do when the vampire counsel is going to oversee the conception of their children, and you accidentally get pregnant? You run of course. What would you do for your family?
Full of prejudice, love, and the extents to how far you will go to make your family safe. This was an incredible book and am already looking forward to the next one. Thank you, Seelie Kay!

This is the second book in the Donovan Trait series and this one is filled with even more action and suspense than the first book. Donovan and Shirley are finally getting hitched but an unplanned pregnancy means that they are now not safe and they go on the run to protect their babies. Because for Shirley to be granted permission to change to a Vampire then the vampire scientists are allowed to collect data through out any pregnancy and birth. Ye Gods! The Law is an Ass! Is book 2 in the Donovan Trait Series. In Book 1, we were introduced to Donovan Trait, a vampire and lawyer. Donovan is sexy, mysterious, smart and everything women want in a man. No woman has ever been enough for Donovan until he meets the vivacious, smart, and sexy Judge Shirley Magnusen. Donovan and Shirley fall head over heels in love and know that they are destined to spend eternity together. To do so, Shirley undergoes treatment by vampire scientists to turn into a vampire. Donovan and Shirley must agree to terms placed on them by the Vampire Coalition as part of their union of pure-blood vampire and turned human. They agree to allow vampire scientists to monitor the conception and birth of any children, not expecting to learn on her wedding day that she has become accidentally pregnant.

This startling discovery unleashes the fury of the Vampire Coalition who now believe that Donovan and Shirley have breeched the terms of their agreement. Their wedding, something which should be a joyous occasion, has taken a dark and sinister turn. Donovan and Shirley are suddenly forced to flee to save their lives and the life of their unborn child.

This book did not disappoint and was action packed throughout. I found myself rooting for Donovan and Shirley; hoping that the Vampire Coalition would realize the error of their old school ways and that Shirley and Donovan would finally get their happy ending. This book kept me on the edge of my seat as I waited with bated breath to see what would become of this power couple. I could not put down this book and had to continue reading to see how it would end. Would Donovan and Shirley survive the wrath of the Vampire Coalition? Will they get their happily ever after? I highly recommend both this book, and book 1 in the Donovan Trait series.

Ye Gods! The Law is an Ass! (Donovan Trait Book 2) by Seelie Kay. This is the second book in this series and its just as good if not better than the first. I loved it. It takes place right as Shirley and Donovan are getting married and they are so happy. Right as the wedding is about to take place Shirley finds out she’s pregnant. She’s so excited but the Coalition isn’t happy at all so Shirley and Donovan have to run to save their baby. Since Shirley is human and Donovan is a Vampire Prince they are figuring out all this works as well as learning to be married and save their baby. Trying to change old laws and rules so that they can keep their child is their main goal. They have violated the contract with the Coalition so they are in deep trouble like life and death trouble. Will they get a law passed before the baby gets here? I highly recommend reading book 1 first so that you get all the background. This series is soo good. I can’t wait for the next!

First things first, I want more of this! Donovan has his hands full with a pregnant Shirley. They are dealing with violating the agreement they made with the Coalition and that’s kind of like war. Hiding on an island of Nuns, Donovan and Shirley are trying to fight this battle, deal with the pregnancy and have the babies when they come early. Trying every method and with every resource they can, they go to battle with the Coalition to prove that vampire babies can be born from a vampire/human mating. The Coalition, being made up of good old vamps, can’t get their heads out of their asses to see the problem. So, big steps must be taken. This book is exciting, fresh, full of adventure and fun! You should read it. It’s a quick weekend read. Well-written, a few twists where you don’t expect them. Highly recommend. I’m looking forward to reading more of this author.

This book was so well put together, from literally everything and anything that happened it was amazing from start to finish. It was a great read. it is a little bit lower key than the previous one in the series.
It is an amazing read and written perfectly. If you enjoyed the first one, I truly think that you need to read this one too! I highly recommend this book, well worth a read! Seelie Kay is an amazing author and did an amazing job on this series.

Seelie Kay really brought the suspense in book two of the Donovan Trait series, Ye Gods! The Law is an Ass! I would personally recommend that you read the first book before diving into this one as it really is a continuation and we get everything set up in that one, besides it is fab as well! This one we find Donovan and his wife in all sorts of shenanigans as they simply want to begin a life together and start a family… of course that is not going to be an easy task given the genetics at play. When vampire nuns are introduced things become even more crazy but keeps the things fun and interesting to say the least! I look forward to seeing what the next book will bring!

I loved the first book in this series so I was really excited for the second one as well and it did not disappoint. This book starts off right before Donovan and Shirley are about to get married. Come wedding day, Shirley finds out she is pregnant. It’s a miracle! Unfortunately the Coalition disagrees and the couple has to go on the run to protect their unborn child.

This book is a lot more mellow than the previous one in the series. It focuses on Donovan and Shirley settling down into their new life on the run. Bringing laws into the Vampire Coalition to try to get them to change their outdated ways. Also, figuring out this miracle pregnancy between a vampire and a recently turned human. What will come of the baby? The mother? I recommend reading this book and the previous if you haven’t already done so!

Seelie Kay is an amazing author, who would have thought of a Vampire lawyer? The way she writes Donovan’s character really got me in the mindset of an old timey gentleman. The way he talks and his personality traits. Then there is Shirley who is a sweet fiery judge. Both Donovan and Shirley are so different from each other but they just work. The flow of the book was just right. I sincerely hope there is going to be a third in this series!

The second book of the Donovan Trait series is even better than the first! Judge Shirley Magnusen and Lawyer/Vampire Prince Donovan Trait head to the alter for their big day.

Getting married is a big deal. Lots of planning all for about thirty minutes of talking and vowing. But getting hitched with a vampire prince is a whole different ball game. Especially when it is more of a reminder of the Vampire Law. For Shirley, it was a long, but beautiful affair. That is until after the wedding when Donovan and his father revealed some news that they had kept from the coalition.

Where human law has some areas for interpretation by the courts, vampire law is black and white. To get married, they had to sign a contract with the coalition. Violating that contract could result in exile or death. Is anything in life worth the possibility of death? Yes! Yes, it is!

Follow this tale of Donovan and Shirley Trait’s battle against the coalition. A fight that may in the end lead to a revolution in the vampire community. (To be continued in the next book of the series)

Seelie Kay is an author that I recommend to everyone. Her writing has always drawn me into the stories from the first word until the last word of the book. There is always a good plotline to get lost in. Her characters are unforgettable. They are complex and complicated. She has a unique take on vampires which is refreshing. We met Donovan in book one. He is a 300-year-old Vampire. He is in love with Judge Shirley Magnusen. There are many laws in the vampire world. Donovan and Judge Shirley, who has been a newly turned vampire. That is where the fun begins and gets interesting. I highly recommend this book to see what happens with Donovan and Judge Shirley.

This is the 2nd book in the Donovan Trait series. This is a Vampire novel and is 149 pages in length. This story follows the Traits on the run. Donovan is a vampire. Shirley was human until Donovan turned her. We met Donovan, a lawyer, and Shirley, a judge, in book 1, First, We Kill all the Lawyers. Now, for Shirley to be “turned”, the Traits had to agree to allow the vampire scientists to watch and collect data on the conception, pregnancy, and birth of any children. But Shirley accidently gets pregnant and now the Vampire Coalition is furious. The Traits end up on a vampire nun island in the hopes of keeping their babies safe.

This book follows on from the  book First We Kill All The Lawyers and what a follow on. This book is action  packed and full of twists. It is definately a story that you won’t be able to put down. You will also feel loads of emotions from happiness to sadness, anger and fear.

We are back with Donovan and Shirley. Now Shirley has been turned she is free to marry Donovan and start a life together. Under the laws set by the Vampire Coalition Shirley isn’t allowed to fall pregnant without someone monitoring her for research purposes.

However plans changes when she finds out she is pregnant on her wedding day. What should be a happy time for the couple turns into a nightmare which sees Donovan and Shirley on the run to save their unborn babies.

Why are they being targeted like this? Surely vampires babies are a good thing? Or will the birth of two health babies unravel a lie that has been told for centuries?

This book was so well put together, from literally everything and anything that happened through out! I was very much entranced as if a vampire’s spell as I read through it, the things that happened and characters and how they came to be, it was amazing from start to finish! It was a great read, needless to say!

Donovan makes an appearance after his first sighting in the first novel. Vampire and lawyer. Still has sleek mesmerizing appearance that he brought on in the first novel. I defiantly saw character growth with him in more than one way than the first novel! Shirley and him are finally to get married. They were a power couple in the first novel so I really loved seeing them together and trying to live a good life. Drama seems to follow them and something happens that sets the plot of the book into motion!

Things go from happy getting married to a run for their lives and a fight for the future of their family literally. I loved both Donovan and Shirley as well that they stuck to their guns with what they believed and the book really shoed off to me, the importance of family, and how it is truly worth everything, despite any risks that may come from it!

To achieve what they believed they wanted, they really had to defy all odds! The book was rapid action and a lot of good heart felt moments. I seriously was rooting for this power couple to win and beat the tribunal basically at their own game! All in all, the book was a easy and fast paced read. One I could not put down. I was literally hooked from the beginning all the way to the end!

The book was amazing, and written perfectly. With every aspect I could literally think of possible. For me the character growth, especially with Donovan towards the end of the book, really got to my heart. I loved him and Shirly so much and they became even more likable in this amazing novel! If you enjoyed the first one, I truly feel you will love this one just as much! It truly has a spark that keeps going as you read through it, and its very impossible to put down! I highly recommend this book, well worth a read!

This book was an interesting and fun read. I really enjoyed the twist it did with the issues that come up trying to find out who was killing lawyers and finding out that one of these lawyers was a vampire. Not only is he protruded as a good lawyer, top bachelor and all-around good-looking guy. This guy was very thorough on finding out who did this to him. He’s love and the romance with and for his girlfriend was so well written and passionate that I actually enjoyed reading about the steamy parts when they were together. This is a short fun read that is a must.

Ye Gods! The Law is an Ass! by Seelie Kay is an intense vampire novel that I was unable to put down! The amount of detail the author portrays is astonishing. I honestly felt like I was in the book!

They were supposed to allow this vampire counsel to oversee their conception of their children, but Shirley ends up accidentally pregnant on her wedding day. What will this family learn along their journey for survival?
The author did an amazing job with setting the moods in every different scene. The author was able to portray so much emotion without overdoing it, and I really admited her for this.

Ye Gods! The Law Is An Ass! is the second book in the Donovan Trait series by Seelie Kay and is just as well-woven and intriguing as the first book. Seelie Kay sprinkled a little more intensity over this story but made sure to weave in some light-hearted humour to break up the tension. This is a fun paranormal romantic suspense- with vampires, lawyers, vampire politics and law, agendas, uncovering the truth, and more. And as with the first book, Ye Gods! has an original take on vampire lore.
In Book One, we meet Donovan Trait (a highly respected lawyer- who is also a vampire over 300 years-old) and his lady love, Judge Shirley Magnusen. They had quite the ‘adventure’ in the first book, which also resulted in Shirley being ‘turned’. Because of this and strict vampire laws, the couple made an agreement with the Vampire Coalition (the Vampire governing body) that would allow the vampire scientists to ‘monitor’ the conception and birth of their children. But things don’t quite go according to plan- which forces Donovan and Shirley to flee. Will they find a solution to their precarious position before the powers that be force their own agenda?
If you loved the first book, then you really will want to grab a copy and dive in. If you have yet to read ‘First, We Kill All the Lawyers’, then I highly recommend that you do before starting on this story. There is important backstory, character details, and key information contained in Book One, which will definitely enhance your reading experience of this book.
I can’t wait to continue this series- bring on the next book!

Thank you, Seelie Kay!

This is an author that I never hesitate to pick up. Her books are well written and her use of details give her stories a realistic feel. This book is no different. I enjoyed being pulled into the story from the beginning. This is the second book in this series which I highly suggest reading the first book as well to help your enjoyment of this series. The characters are connectable and make the story engaging. They are creative and unique. They bring the story to life on each page as well as keep me turning pages to the end. I read this book in one sitting as it is that great. The growth and chemistry of the characters made the story pop. This is a shorter story about vampires and finding the truth. This is a really great story that I loved the characters and the plot. I highly recommend this book and this author.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was the second in The Shadow Chronicles series – if you haven’t read the first, I would highly recommend reading it before this one. The author does an excellent job expanding on the story and characters from the first book! Though this book did not exactly follow the storyline from the first book that I expected, I still greatly enjoyed the plot. I also like how it touched on the storyline that I originally expected it to follow, clearly leaving that open for the next installment! The main characters Levi and Tasha were just as enjoyable as they were in the first book, with additional satisfying developments to the antagonists of both this book and the overall series, as well as some of the lesser side characters. If you loved the first book, you’ll love this one for all the same reasons, including but not limited to the endearing characters, the fast-pace, and the steamy romance! I can’t wait to read the third installment in this series and see where it goes!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed the first book in The Shadow Chronicles series! I like how there was a lot of character development for the main characters, despite being the first book in the series. The author does a great job of making you fall in love with Levi and Tasha, and I thought this take on lycans and vampires was interesting and unique from other similar series. I also love how the author made you think you would have to wait a long time for certain resolutions, but brought them sooner than expected. It made for a nice buildup of certain story elements without the wait getting too frustrating! Overall, it was a face-paced, action-packed book with plenty of story-telling, character-building, and steamy romance! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys young-adult style fantasy books!
