This book was quite an adventure. In the beginning it was a little slow starting for me but it ended up being such a good book. Emma is very relatable and it was very interesting to read. Although this is fiction it is so close to real life and it makes you wonder how you would react if you were in their boots. It has a blooming romance, adventure, suspense, and comedy all in one.

I had not heard of this author before, but I am glad her book found me and didn’t let go! The Fifth Daughter of Thorn Ranch is an amazing read, one you won’t want to put down. Emma Rosales is a fifth-generation heiress of The Thorn, which is the largest ranch in Texas. She was raised on this ranch and could handle day-to-day activities effortlessly with all the grace of the women before her. Across a million acres, Emma sets out to get to know the lay of the land a little better. She stumbles across an ancient secret…and suddenly she’s not so sure she’ll ever make it back home. Will she make the toughest decisions of her life and make it out alive? The adventures in this book were beyond anything I could have imagined. Julia Brewer Daily has an amazing way of writing that plays like a movie in my head, I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us. I highly recommend picking this up and enjoying the ride!

This book had so much to offer from the beautiful scenery, to the amazing characters, and the terrific storyline I just simply couldn’t put it down. I have only ready one other book by this author but I am looking forward to reading many more. But I will say my favorite thing by far is how this analyzing author can pull you straight into the story and make you feel like you’re experiencing everything that they are. So if you’re looking for a fun, buy serious novel to read, then make sure to pick this one up today.

Now Emma has to decide if her life is really what she wants. I really enjoyed this book and the different perspectives from mother and daughter. The characters and description of the Texas landscape is amazing!

I could not put this book down! To the heroine, it must have seemed as though she had traveled back in time when she unwittingly stumbled across a group of natives who not only live off the grid, they have never heard of the grid! I would highly recommend this book to various types of readers, as it touches upon many different interests, such as adventure, time travel (almost), romance, family drama, among others. I truly felt immersed within the magic of this book as a reader. I loved that the book wasn’t predictable and I was still left guessing how things would end up right up until the end. Emma is an interesting and likable protagonist that I enjoyed following throughout her journey. I loved the ending and how things turned out for Emma.

I think it’s important for all people, of all ages, to run with their ideas and make their dreams come true. This author, in my opinion has done just that. The fact that she started writing and has shared what has come from the inner depths of her mind, based on true events, and those that have eloquently come together to allow the reader to jump in and not want to come back out. I didn’t know what to expect from this novel, but I am so very glad that I picked it up, because it’s certainly something that took my mind of current events and let me disappear into farm life in Texas.
The descriptive adventure that transpires will make you want to pull your hair, scratch your head, put on another sweater, and sit by the fire while snow falls to really put you in the zone. I definitely wish I had more time to spend on this author, and this review, but I needed to say, well done! Fellow readers, you won’t regret picking this up. Do it, now!

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I was absolutely blown away by the breathtaking scenery and the raw emotions and relatability of the characters. Not to mention, the cover is absolutely gorgeous and as a Latina woman, I LOVE to read about a Latina character.
This story is told from two points of view— Emma, the heir to the ranch in Texas, and Josie, Emma’s mom. We also learn a bit about their family history and the expectations of mothers to daughters over the years as the ranch is passed down each generation. Emma soon learns of a cave that leads to another world. As Emma is trapped in this world, Josie, still at the ranch, has no idea where her daughter disappeared to and as with any mother who’s child mysteriously disappears, worry begins to consumer her.
I was captivated by this story — wanting to know more about Emma’s experiences while also feeling for Josie. As I read, I felt such a connection to each character, which were so perfectly written. Highly recommend!

This book took my pleasantly by surprised. This is a new-to-me author and I fell in love with her writing from page 1. This is a dual told story from the perspective of Josie (the mother) and Emma (the daughter). I didn’t want this story to end!
This is a story of the love between a mother and daughter and how that love is deeper than most. The Thorn Ranch has been run and managed by a very successful line of strong Rosales women. Emma is the heir to the ranch and is a bit of a wild heart. She’s out on an adventure when her horse becomes injured and she’s a three-day ride from home. That adventure escalates when she discovers a whole new group of people on her land. Will Emma ever make it back home to her distraught mother?
I can’t say much more without giving away too much of this book. If you’re looking for a great adventure read, give this one a chance!

An enjoyable and entertaining family saga which had me hooked from start to finish. The storyline kept me gripped throughout, and the wonderfully descriptive narrative brought the large Texas ranch setting vividly to life. Emma Rosales is the heiress to the largest ranch in Texas, ‘The Thorn’, becoming the fifth generation to have the responsibility of managing the million acres that make up the ranch. Having been brought up on the ranch Emma is confident about her new responsibilities, however there are parts of ‘The Thorn’ which she doesn’t know quite as well as she thought. The acres are made up of desert scrub and craggy mountains, with the clear cloudless skies and quiet atmosphere being disrupted by whispers on the wind.
Emma soon learns that the modern ranch has an ancient secret, when she stumbles upon people living in one of the caves on her property. Emma must either fight to return to her family or accept her fate and be hidden away from them forever. The story is told from the point of view of multiple characters which works well, and made me feel more engaged with them. Emma was a great main character and I liked how her relationship with Kai developed. This was a real page turner of a novel, with a unique and intriguing storyline, wonderfully defined characters and a amazing setting. I definitely recommend this novel.

This book had a mysterious feel to it from the moment I read the description and I couldn’t wait to see how it was going to unfold. The whole book is a well written and unique story. The passion and the enthusiasm from the author comes through on each page and I think that is what drew me in the most. I loved the characters in the story. Each had a distinct feeling and added something to the book. I loved that you could watch them develop as the story went on and I really became invested in a few of them. This is a fantastic book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

This book was very good. The author is incredibly talented at painting a picture with descriptions. It was very easy to close my eyes and imagine exactly what she was describing. I will say that at times this talent made the book seem a little wordy. However, that wordiness did not take away from the absolute delight that is the story. This story is more than meets the eye. It is told in the modern era but there are points in time where the story makes you feel as if you have been transported back in time. I have to say my favorite part of the book is Emma. Emma is a strong female protagonist who you will be rooting for throughout the entire story. More importantly, Emma is the type of character who stays with you long after the story is over. Truly her story is one you will want to read again, as I am sure there are pieces I didn’t pay close enough attention to that I would cherish during a second reading.

This is a story that is packed with adventure and twists and turns that keeps the reader gripped and reading more. I read this book in 1 sitting as I refused to put it down. This is a beautiful story which many elements including danger, Romance, and a choice which could change the entire direction of Emma’s life. The story is told from two points of view that of Emma and her mother Josie.
Emma and her family live on Thorn Ranch. It is a huge place and is passed down from mother to daughter. The next in line to own the ranch is Emma. However, Emma doesn’t feel ready to take over the ranch all she wants is to be a vet, but she knows she can’t stop what is destined to happen.
When she decides to go and look at the area of the ranch not so well travelled she stumbles across a group of people living on the ranch in secret. How does no one in her family know that these people are here. Now she is stuck between what to do. Does she help these people she has just found or does she remain loyal to her family and her destiny?
Emma is a strong willed and determined young women. This story flows so nicely and leaves the reader guessing which way she will choose. The switch between Emma of today and Emma with the tribe is interesting to see and you are always thinking how will her actions and decisions made when she’s with the tribe effect her life and the ranch.

This book is a wonderfully written very descriptive story by an obviously talented author. It will keep you captivated from start to finish and is filled with such vivid imagery you truly will feel as if you are there seeing and experiencing everything right along with the characters. Speaking of characters, Emma is such a strong young woman and although she is a fictitious character she may well inspire you with her strength. This is the first book I have read by this fantastic author and I know it definitely will not be the last.

This is the second book I have picked up by this author and this makes the second book by this author that I have enjoyed. You have Emma, heir to The Thorn Ranch, young Emma, and Josie, Emma’s moms point of view throughout the book. The Thorn is a ranch that has been in Emma’s family for decades, and while it’s not your typical line of succession, this ranch is passed down to the only child in each generation, always a daughter. As a strong willed, smart, well rounded, independent woman Emma’s makes a great main character. The Thorn is so big that no one has ever been able to properly explore the land because there is an entire community existing below ground, and in caves on the property. Emma accidentally stumbles upon these people who call themselves The People, and desperately trying to protect their secret refuse to allow Emma to return home. After Emma accepts that she will be their awhile and starts to work closely with them I began to appreciate and even enjoy Chatpa, and Kai, and hoped that when competition for Emma’s hand began he would enter the competition, compete, and he ultimately won. In the process of wowing her Emma begins to fall for Kai and is torn by if she really wants to return or stay with The People until other males bring back a group of woman for wives and introduce a grave sickness into the community and everything begins to turn bad. I was a little confused when Emma began referring to the ‘sickness’ as Covid immediately although she had been kidnapped almost a year at this point and couldn’t have known what it was unless the woman that were brought into the fold said so but I don’t remember that happening. I appreciated having both Emma and Josie’s point of view because that keeps you up to date on what’s happening in the real world vs in the caves. Although I was sad at first with how I assumed the book was going to end the author surprised me and set the ending up beautifully to maybe continue with another book for a series but ultimately thrilled Emma seemed to be remembering Kai and she was starting to see a future between the two of them with him helping her with the ranch. Who knows maybe some of the traditions are due to change in the future.

Emma is the next in line for the Thorn Ranch. After graduating college she is at a pivotal point in her life and questioning what steps she will take next. Taking her horse out she rides into an area she is not as familiar with and ends up rescued by someone from a group calling themselves The People. Held captive in a cave with none of the common comforts she is used to. Emma asks if she can return home, the reluctance from The People to let her go is compounded with being discovered. Will Emma be able to return home or will she be lost forever?
There is much more to the story, Emma’s mother Josie is a huge part of the story as well as Kai who is a member of The People. The story reminded me a bit of some of the western family sagas I have read in the past. Captivating story, I was surprised by the way the story unfolded and was kept guessing as to where Emma’s life would lead.

It was read by the point of view of both Emma and her mother Josie and he endless search of her daughter. You got to learn about the land in Texas and the old ways of The People, who have been able to live off the land undetected for years.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story; I couldn’t put it down until the very end as I wanted to see how things would turn out. I loved the author’s descriptions of the Texan wilds and life on a ranch. This was a well written story about intrigue and family drama. Emma was a strong female character who loved her life, but when taken in by The People, she worked hard to earn their trust. Emma consistently looked for ways to get home, but while living among her new people, she found a way to try to help them with her education and knowledge. I enjoyed how the story would switch back and forth from Emma’s point of view to her mother, Josie’s point of view. It was heartbreaking reading her mother’s anguish over her missing daughter and the pressures of the legacy of Thorn Ranch. I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a fast paced story about love, drama, and family.

Borrowed Time by Lane Cohen is a creative science fiction story filled with details from science, classic sci-fi, history, anything you can think of time travel related, it’s in this book! I really enjoyed the way that Cohen made such interesting characters whose pasts and concerns really built up the plot. This novel really makes you ask the ultimate time travel question – if you could change the past, what would you change? And would that be the right thing to do? Is it really necessary to try to change the past to fix the future? The novel is about a physics professor Andy Case and his student Samoset Brown are both interested in time travel from an academic perspective, and for Case it provides an interesting discussion topic for his otherwise unenthusiastic class. Let’s just say that they bit off more than they could chew when they stepped into the realm of time traveling. This is a great read for time travel fans!

This book was interesting. It honestly took me a while to fully get into it. The writing style seemed a little stiff and formal, and to me personally didn’t feel like it flowed well. The book seemed really drawn out with a rushed ending. It’s a great story though, and I wish we got more from the romance with the two leads than what we had in the book. Hopefully, there’s a sequel coming soon and we can follow along with Emma’s story even more!

This story is a unique twist on the time travel plot. I like the mention of the original 1960’s version of the time machine. The historical references were enjoyable and kept the pages turning. The characters and the adventures they go on while trying to alter events important to them, drive the plot effortlessly forward. I wanted to know what happened next and couldn’t put the book down. This book was a very interesting read about time travel. It has fantasy, sci-fi, drama, historical details, adventure, and the relationship between characters, and so much more all rolled into one that made it hard to put down. The way the author puts these thoughts on to paper and makes a story is just amazing. The details of each character really made for bringing the characters of this story into life. The detail into every scene and scenario made you really feel like you were in the book as while. I really enjoyed reading this book.

An interesting leap into time travel. An advanced physics professor team’s up with his most promising student to make a time machine (using a prop from the 1960s time machine movie!) And successfully make a time machine. The student wants to right a wrong done to his native American Ancestors where as Professor Andy wants to fix his relationships and his broken heart. They explore the morality of changing time and it’s consequences. This book brings together Sci-Fi, historical fiction, fantasy and well developed characters into a quick but great time travel adventure. I also enjoyed all the quotes relating to time between chapters. Was a nice touch!.

What’s not to love about gunslingers and time travel? Like others have mentioned, I hope there is a sequel or maybe just a continuation or side novel. I enjoyed how details of the past were woven artfully into the story. I found myself thinking about if I could time travel – what would I do? Would I change my past? To me, the best books are the ones that you continue thinking about after you are done reading. Well worth the time to read!

Borrowed time is a story about scientists inventing a time machine using an old movie prop so that they can time travel. The reader travels through various time periods with the characters and are introduced to new characters in different times. It is a truly fascinating read as the characters are faced with moral dilemmas that would inevitably occur when the possibility of changing future timelines is involved. Do they do what they want and change events to better their future and ensure their own happiness? Or is it better to leave events as they had occurred?
I found this book fascinating because I have always enjoyed the concept of time travel. I could not help but wonder what I would do if I could travel back in time. As someone fascinated with tracing my family tree, I personally would love to travel back in time and meet some of my ancestors so I could learn more about them. But how would that effect my future? The author did a great job of writing historical details and conveying the emotions and thoughts of each character through their individual stories. An interesting read!

This was a good read! It was a little more science fiction than I was expecting, I was hoping for more fantasy but it was still really good. I think though, that the sci-fi threw me off, because I had trouble staying focused and concentrated on the story, and found myself zoning out a lot. That’s more on me, and I don’t think ibwas in the mood to read sci-fi, because the story was really good! It had a really interesting plot and went pretty fast. I just wasn’t in the mood to read that type of book, so I would love to go back when I am in the mood and see how much better I like it when I’m anticipating it!

Borrowed Time is the first book I have read by this author. I was taken in by the blurb about time travel and historical fiction, and I was not disappointed. I have always enjoyed The Time Machine and the movies based on the book. It was great to think of the time travel machine differently. The story combines the Wild West, science fiction, historical fiction, suspense, and more. I want to keep the plot a secret because I think this is best enjoyed going in with less information. The characters are exciting and helped to draw me into this adventure more. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

This reminds me of the movie so much when the Scientist needed to make a machine to travel back a couple of months ago to save his girlfriend from a terrible accident. This story brought up a lot of sad stories from the Professor and the student wanting to change the past. We all know that once something is done you can not change it. The author did an amazing job describing the old west.

I thought I would try a different novel than the ones I have been reading recently, and I’m glad I did! The author does a beautiful job of describing the feel and looks of Texas! We see this through Emma’s love for her state is how many people in Texas feel and its own unique beauty. We follow Emma through significant life decisions at The Thorn and how she handles them; which is like all Rosales women before her: head on! However, not all things can be dealt with this way which leads our heroine to take several missteps. The familial connection is one of my favorite things in the story as well as Emma’s grit in harrowing situations. (Texan women to the core!) Though the only thing that was a little underwhelming was the ending. I was hoping for a more explanation of the outcome. I truly enjoyed this book; otherwise, if you want to explore Texas and its culture, I recommend it!

Borrowed Time is a creative science fiction story packed with details from science, classic sci-fi, history – you name it! And with interesting characters whose pasts and concerns drive the plot. As with many time travel stories it asks the big question – if you could change the past, what would you change? And would that be the right thing to do? Physics professor Andy Case and his student Samoset Brown are both interested in time travel from an academic perspective, and for Case it provides an engaging discussion topic for his otherwise unenthusiastic class. But as their theoretical concept becomes an increasingly achievable reality their other motivations come to the fore. This is a great read for time travel fans, and gets five stars from me! There are plenty of familiar tropes as well as thought-provoking scenarios and great characters to get to know.
