Atonement is the first book in the McIntire County series by Winter Austin. It is an engrossing romantic suspense that has all the suspenseful, gritty, gripping, and intense developments that I love and have come to expect from Ms. Austin. She has a way of weaving intriguing mystery, tension, and complex subjects into an entirely unputdownable read, while blending in plenty of emotion to balance it all out.
This is a crime and investigation story set in a small rural town in Iowa, where things take a twisted turn when a series of baffling suicides sets the stage for a dangerous game of cat and mouse. A cunning serial killer with an agenda. A determined deputy with PTSD and secrets of her own. A stubborn detective intent on helping to uncover the killer. Add in plenty of angst, dramatic developments, and twists and turns- and the story really takes off.
What a way to start a series! Can’t wait to see where we go from here. Bring on Book #2!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Winter Austin!

Atonement (The McIntire County Series: #1)Atonement by Winter Austin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I like how the author gives a different perspective from a female character instead of male on how PTSD doesn’t always need to be stereotypical in novels. There is a lot of information on how people deal with their personal issues. The story does flow well and the characters are well developed. The characters’ actions and personalities are very relatable in real life.

Atonement (The McIntire County Series: #1)Atonement by Winter Austin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first book in the McIntire County Series and wow what a start. I was gripped right from the beginning.
This is a gripping Suspense read full of twists and turns that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I wasn’t able to work out the ending which to me makes a good story when you can’t tell what is coming next.
The author does an amazing job with out lead character Nic. Nic was a military sniper. After leaving she is now a sheriffs deputy however things aren’t straight forward. Nic suffers really badly with PTSD as a result of her time as a military sniper and even though she has left she still suffers. It was a really eye opening look at how PTSD effects not only the person suffering but everyone around them.
In this story there are several suicides which Nic needs to investigate. Were these a sad case of suicide or is something more sinister happening. Could Nic be walking into the trap of a killer?
With Con O’Halon assigned to help her they need to work together to solve this even though Nic pushes back against his assistance at every turn.
As Nic finds it increasingly hard to control her demons from the past will Con be strong enough to pull her back from the brink of despair?
This is a story full of heartbreak and secrets and as the secrets become revealed the fight that Nic has to fight becomes harder. It is a story of a constant battle that Nic has to go through against PTSD and how hard it is for her to keep her life on track. When a killer is out there as well trying everything in his power to bring her down Nic has a lot of things to deal with. Can she allow Con in and trust him to help her or will she continue to spiral out of control.

This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites. I enjoy this author’s writing skills that make their stories come to life on every page. I found this book to be well written and hard to put down. A story about redemption, the truth behind the suicides that are happening in this small town and a deputy that has their own past and demons lurking. I enjoyed being pulled into the story from the beginning. The characters are relatable, strong characters that made the story easy for me to read. They have great growth as well as add a lot to the story. I found this book to be fast paced, engaging and entertaining to read. You don’t want to miss out on this mystery story. I highly recommend this book.

Atonement (The McIntire County Series: #1)Atonement by Winter Austin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I started this book and, quite literally, could not put it down. Nic had grabbed my attention right from the start. By jumping right in with the hostage scene, I was in for the full ride. Nice is a former Marine sniper that is now a Sheriff’s Deputy. She’s trying to keep her PTSD hidden and not doing a great job. Many secrets are hidden in this story and they are coming out. I love the writing. I was nowhere close to figuring out who the culprit was. A definite sign of a good mystery to me. The author throws in twists and turns where you don’t expect them. A little romance between her and Con was lovely. I can’t wait to see where that goes. This is an amazing start to a new series that just blew me away. I can’t wait for the next book.

Atonement (The McIntire County Series: #1)Atonement by Winter Austin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There has not been a book by Winter that I have not really enjoyed. I was excited to get started when I came across this romantic suspense story from her.
Atonement is the first exciting book in The McIntire County Series and follows former marine and McIntire County deputy Nicolette Rivers. Nicolette has had a messy life and suffers from PTSD. When a hostage situation goes wrong Nic’s triggers rear their ugly heads. She is a complex woman, she is strong, but she also has much depth to her. Winter certainly puts this woman through her paces.
Winter has done a great job of showing the war within oneself and PTSD. It is a raw, heart-wrenching and compelling story. Suffering from PTSD myself it made the story that much more real and poignant.
Con is the perfect match for Nic and but to be able to move forward they need to deal with her scarred past.
Winter has cleverly woven several threads together to make this a compelling read and it is one of those books that you just can’t put down because you need to know where it is going and what comes next.
There is suspense, heartache and heartbreak, pain and sorrow, dark secrets, and danger but there is also some laughter.
Atonement almost becomes a dirty word. The Priest most certainly does. With deadly secrets, family, war, tragedy, death and one man’s crazy and another’s love all collide in this tale that you should all get your hands on.
I really liked the characters and found myself caught up in them, the small town and the story. I hope that some of the secondary characters get their own stories.
This is a must read.

Winter Austin perpetually answers the question: “were you born in the winter?” with a flat “nope,” but believe her, there is a story behind her name.

A lifelong Mid-West gal with strong ties to the agriculture world, Winter grew up listening to the captivating stories told by relatives around a table or a campfire. As a published author, she learned her glass half-empty personality makes for a perfect suspense/thriller writer. Taking her ability to verbally spin a vivid and detailed story, Winter translated that into writing deadly romantic suspense, mysteries, and thrillers.

When she’s not slaving away at the computer, you can find Winter supporting her daughter in cattle shows, seeing her three sons off into the wide-wide world, loving on her fur babies, prodding her teacher husband, and nagging at her flock of hens to stay in the coop or the dogs will get them.

She is the author of multiple novels, with more on the way.

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery Book 3) by Winter Austin – Review by Heidi Sturgess

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #3)Straight for the Kill by Winter Austin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is book 3 in the series and if I may be so bold , I’d advice you start at the very beginning 😉not only is it a brilliant series but to me you’ll get a fuller experience if you do it that way and references to previous characters and incidents will make more sense …..

Having read Hush and knowing the past trauma my blood turned to ice when the first body was discovered by Elizabeth’s deputies , I’m sure I wasn’t alone and instead of healing after an op she’s on her feet hunting down a killer …. It feels like the past is back to haunt Eckatdt and it’s people and someone is really out for vengeance

Elizabeth is determined to solve both her cold case and the one of late and bring those to justice of now and then but at what cost !?

My nerves were shattered but I was hanging on every word and I have admiration for her guts and her determination !

A brilliant , nail biting and thrilling read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love thrillers, and this book did not disappoint! Action packed from the start, and a great mystery to the end. This is the first book I read in the series, and it read well as a standalone. That said, I am definitely going to go back and read the first 2. I love the author’s writing style. The details lend a realism to the book and starting with a winter scene gives it a cold and dreary beginning. I am looking forward to reading more from Winter Austin!

The characters are great and the chemistry between all of them can be felt coming off the pages. This particular installment of these series was a fun read but at times felt a little drawn out and it took away from the story! The small town is rocked by murders that relate to a twenty five year old case, can the connection be made? Can the killer be caught? Its worth the read.

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #3)Straight for the Kill by Winter Austin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

History is repeating itself in Eckardt County. A young woman has been found murdered with similar circumstances as a death from 25 years ago. Sheriff Elizabeth Benoit’s best friend and Deputy Kyle Lundquist’s sister was the victim of the past, and now with files of clues and determination to prove the former sheriff’s involvement, it’s going to take a whole lot of work to put the cases to rest.

Deputy Detective Lila Dayne knows there’s something she’s missing with this case, but can’t put her finger on it. Suddenly, people are disappearing, and despite having a personal stake in the case Sheriff Benoit can’t stay out of it now, especially after one of the missing people is her sister.

This book jumps right into the trouble and gets digging you deeper and deeper. It was a fun, suspenseful ride most of the time.

It is well written and thought out. I found a few spots at the beginning that I kept sticking to, but it’s a me problem, not a book problem. This is the first of the series I have read and I definitely think reading the others could give me more information and insight into the characters, but overall, I think it’s not a huge deal to jump in right here.

I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from the Eckardt County Sheriff’s Department moving forward and seeing how Benoit and Dayne solve the next crime!

⭐️⭐️⭐⭐⭐ Book Review

Two years ago Deputy Dayne survived a serial killer’s attempt to kill her. Night after night she suffers nightmares that bring the past quickly flashing back. The killer is striking again and the team desperately needs Deputy Dayne on their side but she has shut everyone out. Will the deputy be able to put her fears aside before the killer strikes again?

Hush, My Darling is the second installment in the Benoit & Dayne Mystery series. Although Hush, My Darling is part of a series it can easily be read as a standalone with no confusion. Winter Austin writes deadly romantic thrillers that will not disappoint. Full of suspenseful twists and turns Austin has you sitting on the edge of your seat the entire book. Just when you thought you had the mystery figured out she throws another wrench in the plot. The story line was seamless, moving from scene to scene, keeping the reader engaged. I recently read installment three which drew me into this series. Despite reading these out of order, I can’t wait to get my hands on the remainder of the series. Highly recommended!

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #3)Straight for the Kill by Winter Austin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book 3 of the series and it was another incredible read. Once again, I was gripped beginning to end wanting desperately to know who was behind it all.
As with the last book, the author wrote this very well. The plot twists and clues had me second-guessing myself and who I believed was responsible/what I thought was happening. I truly believe the author found their calling writing crime thrillers, they do it so well!
The characters are written very well as before and learning more information about my favourite characters was great, and strategically done. The support that the characters show each other is great and I found myself getting emotionally invested and worrying for the safety of the characters and their family. I could not put it down.
Now I have the joy of being able to go back and read the first novel. I’ll be on the look out for more from this author!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh man, this was a good one! I was gripped from the beginning and I was kept guessing until the end.
The author wrote this so well – the plot twists and the clues sprinkled throughout were amazingly done and had me suspecting someone then changing my mind with the small details they added. The author definitely knew what they were doing throwing suspicion one way then the other.
The way the characters were written, fit with the twists and suspicions so well whilst also being the ‘perfect’ characters. Their interactions with each other, and the support they offer was great to witness. I went through a whole range of emotions and as I suspected one or another, my feelings about their actions changed as I read on.
I didn’t initially realise this was the second book in the series and although I will go back and read the first book I don’t think I missed anything too important. The author included the important and relevant information which I likely missed out from the first book so I felt like I had all the information I needed to enjoy the story. The thing I lacked from not reading the first is likely another great story.
I can’t wait to read more from this author!

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #3)Straight for the Kill by Winter Austin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sheriff Elizabeth Benoit is recovering from emergency surgery and is at home trying to recoup but life does not stand still in a small town that is shrouded with secrets. As she sits at home, murder and kidnapping are taking place just like the one that happened 25 years ago to her best friend. The similarities are uncanny! Not only is she trying to solve the 25 year old case but now this new one as well. Secret calls, a camp in the woods, and the Good Ol’ Boys Club is not helping to make things any easier. Deputy detective Lila Dayne who is an outsider to the town is hitting brick walls with every turn and needs the help of the locals who don’t want to hash up old crimes or feelings. Prominent members of the small town begin to disappear and then Elizabeth’s sister has gone missing. Will they be able to find her in time or just her dead body at the end of the day? Packed with mystery and intrigue this is such a great book. Strong female leads and a bit of romance and sizzle add to the story that kept me on the edge of my seat! The setting is so like a small town and the locals behave just like those in my town hiding the truth to keep their own noses out of trouble! A definite must read!

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #3)Straight for the Kill by Winter Austin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Elizabeth Benoit’s best friend died of an accidental overdose 25 years ago. Elizabeth suspected that there might have been more to the case but chose to push those feelings aside and move forward. Lila Dayne is a Deputy working in the same department as Elizabeth Benoit who discovers the body of another young girl twenty five years later who has died under similar circumstances. Lila chooses to move forward with the case without involving Elizabeth but that does not go well. As Sheriff of the department not only is she Lila’s superior but it also becomes personal for Elizabeth because of the loss of her friend in a similar manner years prior.

As Lila digs deeper into the case she comes up with a list of suspects but nothing concrete. As Lila struggles to pinpoint a main suspect in the case important members of the community suddenly vanish. This leads Lila to believe that there is something bigger at work and that there is more to this case than she originally thought. Elizabeth has tried to stay away from the case due to the personal issues of it, but when her sister suddenly vanishes, she must do everything she can to find her. Elizabeth and Lila must team up to solve the case and bring the murderer to justice. Will they be able to find out in time before more people vanish?

This book kept me on the edge of my seat and was action packed out of the gate. Both Lila and Elizabeth are smart, strong, independent, feisty, kick-ass women who do not back down from a challenge. I found myself cheering them on and trying to crack the case along with them. A highly suspenseful, action packed read!

Once again, this author did an amazing work of art. This book had me on the edge of my seat form the start to the finish. I still have not read the first book but did read the second one before this one and can firmly say that these books can be read by themselves, but I will for sure be going back and reading book one. The suspense in this book was just as intense as the other reads. I highly enjoyed this. The love you can tell that Elizabeth had for her friend you can tell was very real. And the way she goes about it to find out what happened is truly something amazing. But these two women are an amazing example for women helping women and supporting each other to figure this all out. I highly recommend these books if you love crime, suspense, and mystery.

Hush, My Darling (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #2)Hush, My Darling by Winter Austin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lila Dayne is a Deputy with Eckhardt County who survived an attack on her life by a serial killer. Two years later she is haunted by the memories of that vicious attack. Still running from that night and trying to overcome her fears she is desperate for a fresh start. Even after moving to a small part of southeast Iowa, Lila is unable to shake her fears of constantly being watched.

Elizabeth Benoit is the new Sheriff of the department in Eckhardt County where Lila is now working as a Deputy. Elizabeth is quickly thrown from her task of stopping corruption into the solving of murder when dead bodies suddenly start to appear. The murders are freakishly similar to those of a serial killer who left bodies along the I-80. When one of the bodies portrays a sinister message directed at a member of the department it sets off a chain of events that has one member spiral out of control.

I loved this book and found myself really invested in Lila and her story. I could feel her fear and experienced the terror that went along with her as she fought through the things that triggered her. As I read along and followed her on her journey I found myself trying to solve the mystery of who the serial killer was and why they were after Lila. I was compelled to read through in one sitting to find out what was going to become of Lila and solve the mystery along with Lila and Elizabeth. I was on pins and needles as the story unfolded. This book is full of action, suspense, mystery, and intrigue. I highly recommend!

I’m a big fan of serial killer stuff and books and this was just wonderful. This was the second book to the series, and I have to say I didn’t read the first boo but that didn’t stop from this amazing, wonderful read, and I was never lost that I didn’t know what was going on. I know I, like most people, love a good mystery that gets its hooks in you and doesn’t let you go until the last question has been answered, the last puzzle pieces have been put in the right places, and the mystery has been solved! The problem is that most of them that claim that don’t deliver. When I first picked up this book it was in the middle of a series, I had never heard of this author, and while it sounded good I didn’t hold out much hope. I am so glad in this instance to have been wrong as I didn’t have any trouble getting into this book and blowing through to the end, this book definitely delivered and I really enjoyed it. Like most books of its kind you have some familiar characters and things will make the most sense if the books are read in order but they can also be read as a standalone. You should give it a read.

A fast-paced, attention grabbing story! Although it’s the third in a series, it can be read as a standalone fairly easily. There are a lot of characters and moving pieces to this story, but once the reader has a handle on the picture you will keep turning the page to figure out what is going to happen.

I really enjoyed the setting and characters that made up the story. The plot was unique and I loved the concept of the cold case relating to present danger, it brought another element and depth to the story. Lila and Elizabeth are a dynamic duo, with Elizabeth both haunted and driven by the past and Lila with a new perspective but her own past. Can they work together to solve the case and finally bring peace to the town?

I can’t wait for the next installment, as well as to go back and read the first two!

I’ve always wondered what it would be like to read a mystery novel about small town cold cases. This story does not disappoint. It shows the true effect that something like murder can do to a small town. It affects everyone. The hard part is knowing who to trust.. Even after a surgery and years of trauma these women don’t let that stop them from putting an end to the bad guy.

The author also does an amazing job with story and world building. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #3)Straight for the Kill by Winter Austin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Elizabeth Benoit, the sheriff, had her best friend die 25 years ago. Deemed an accidental OD, the case was closed. Elizabeth always thought there was more to the story and kept the case files close.

Now that it is 25 years later, another young girl dies of very similar circumstances. Lila Dayne, a deputy, was the one who discovered the body. Since she knows about the previous case, she decides to try to keep Elizabeth out of it. Elizabeth does not take this well.

Lila is trying her hardest to solve the case while butting heads with her superiors. The case runs deeper than first imagined and there are a few suspects. Nothing seems to be adding up. On top of that, Elizabeth’s sister goes missing causing even more trouble within the team. Can Lila and Elizabeth band together and find the murderer? Read to find out!

This book is technically book 3 of the series but can be read as a stand-alone. Although I feel if you want to get to know the women better, especially Lila, you should read the previous books. It hints at a traumatic past. I enjoyed the book. It was action filled from start to finish. I sat there and was constantly on edge. Both women are well written. They are so different yet so alike. Elizabeth is stubborn, strong but charismatic while Lila is stubborn, takes no crap, and is fast to anger but gets stuff done.

In this captivating third book, Elizabeth is faced with a similar case that has happened in her town, the only problem is that case that happened 25 years ago has now happened again. With her deputies in tow, they work hard to solve this case and hopefully the case that happened 25 years ago to her best friend. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and definitely had me guessing the entire time as to what was happening. Straight For The Kill is fast paced and exciting with wonderfully thought out secondary characters and a well crafted plot! There is also a cold case involved giving this book a whole other layer! I have always loved my crime shows so I am a big fan of this unpredictable high stakes mystery! I truly felt like this book was over too soon. Highly recommended, from one mystery lover to another!

Twenty-five years ago Sheriff Benoit’s best friend was murdered. While recovering from surgery members of the community begin to disappear. When Benoit’s sister goes missing the race against the clock begins.

Straight for the Kill is the third installment in the Benoit & Dayne Mystery series. Although Straight for the Kill is part of a series it can easily be read as a standalone with no confusion. Winter Austin writes deadly romantic thrillers that will not disappoint. Full of suspenseful twists and turns Austin has you sitting on the edge of your seat the entire book. Just when you thought you had the mystery figured out she throws another wrench in the plot. I am a “judge a book by the cover” kind of gal and the cover drew me in on this one but I was sold after the first few chapters. The plot was seamless, moving from scene to scene, keeping the reader engaged. I won’t hesitate in the near future to pick up another mystery written by Winter Austin.

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery Book 3) by Winter Austin

Straight for the Kill is a gripping mystery/Thriller that will have you turning the pages trying to figure out what is going on to happen next. The twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole story. This is a fast paced story that once you start reading there’s no stopping until you finish. When a body is found Sheriff Benoit feels a bit deja vu as it reminds her of a case that went unsolved. And there are several similarities between them. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I don’t want to give to much away. I look forward to reading more from this Author.
