The Brass Compass: A Novel by Ellen Butler

The Brass Compass was exciting, action packed, and invigorating. I loved that the author, Ellen Butler, pulls you in with such gripping excitement at the star with her female spy. Lily, who is the main character, is recruited following the death of her mother and attack on Pearl Harbor. Thanks to her exquisite knowledge and skill in different languages she makes the perfect selection. I loved following her story and seeing her character develop. I also loved the vivid scenery and different phrases of German and what not. I was very impressed with how much I enjoyed this book. It is definitely one I see myself reading again and again. I highly recommend this novel!

The Brass Compass by Ellen Butler was a spy like historical fiction romance, that kept me reading.

Not my first read by this author, so I knew going in I was in for something not only well written, but well researched. I was not disappointed, this book was that and more. Now I will say that there was a little too much info and filler at some points, pulling me out of the story, but it wasn’t enough to detour me, or bring my reading mojo down.

I fell into this story right away, and as I read on the more I get pulled in. The suspense, mystery and the spy games made it gripping and fun. I love the strong female MC, for the this book is set in, she was beyond her time and I fully enjoyed her character. I loved the romance as well, it was a nice touch and again, fun. This book was just one of those books, that was just a joy to read. It was strangely soothing to me, and I think that has to do with the steady plot flow and smooth tones, with a haze of darkness.

Overall this book is a must read, it was a good mix of history, romance, action and spy mystery; and it gets my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval.

Murder Creek is a suspenseful and mysterious read. I was immediately drawn into the storyline with Eve’s trip and but of research on Murder Creek. I was very curious and the author really drew me in with the missing girl. I loved this book and how easy it was to read and follow. I really enjoyed the variety of characters and scenery. The author was descriptive enough to easily picture each scene without being over the top. I really look forward to reading more from this author in the future and I highly recommend this book!

This is a short, mysterious, wonderful read. The author kept me guessing what could have possibly happened to the teachers and kids all the way up till the end. There is a good message in this book and I found it to be well delivered for all ages. I liked how concerned Telly was and how involved he got in the search and the fact that he took Billy with him and let him be a big part of the search. This was definitely a unique and interesting read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I highly recommend this book.

Murder Creek – Jane Suen

Murder Creek by Jane Suen is a truly phenomenal murder mystery read! I have read and loved all of this author’s work but this book is my absolute favourite so far!! It’s detailed, intriguing, easy to follow, thrilling and captivating. Even though this is a shorter read the storyline still felt well rounded and it flowed seamlessly.

Like always when I dive into a book by this author I found myself unable to put it down, I couldn’t wait to get answers to all of my questions and I really enjoyed getting to know Eve, she was a great main character.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone, it’s one that should not be missed, and I look forward to reading more from Jane Suen in the future!

The Matchmaker’s Match by Nicole Flockton is the third book in the Man’s Best Friend series. I have enjoyed this series because there is always a dog playing a part in the romance. After a one night stand, Meredith does not think she will ever run into Lincoln again. Paired up at her best friend’s wedding the two have to decide if there might be a second chance waiting for them.
I enjoyed both Meredith and Lincoln and was rooting for them. They are a good match and highlight each other’s strengths and help with the other’s weaknesses. I also enjoyed the story because they are not perfect and have issues to get over in order to move on and go forward with their lives. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Murder Creek is a murder mystery by Jane Suen. I have read quite a few books by this writer and I knew that I’d be in for a treat – the writing was smooth and the characters were intriguing and the story was compelling! On top of it all, Murder Creek is a standalone so if you are a lover of mystery stories then you don’t need to be concerned with whether there is a backstory etc. and you can simply grab a copy and enjoy yourself!
Jane Suen gives us Eve Sawyer who has a bit of sixth sense going on and she gets drawn to the unsolved disappearance of Lacey Walken. Eve is stubborn and even though Lacey disappeared years ago, she is determined to figure out what happened to her! We follow the clues along with Eve and meet all the additional characters that make as look up and ponder “I wonder what they are hiding”… The deeper Eve digs the more dangerous the situation turns and you will be biting your fingernails and hoping that she solves it before she becomes an unsolved case herself!

Murder Creek by Jane Suen is a short, quick mystery read. Lacey went missing 20 years ago. Eve is in town to work on a journalism report and gets drawn into Lacey’s story. Will she find out about the skeletons in Murder Creek’s closet?
This is an interesting read and I didn’t want to put it down. Eve is a good character and the story kept me intrigued. I wanted to figure out the mystery to Lacey’s disappearance and all the secrets of the town. I have enjoyed several other books by Jane Suen and was glad to read another of her stories.

Bowled by Pamela Q. Fernandes was my first book by this author and I’m looking forward to reading more by this author. This was a wonderfully written story of humor and missteps with sassy attitude thrown in.

We all know that everything you put on Twitter can and will be used against you at some point. Rose found that out when she posted “Did Mathew Anderson really need another home in NYC” Never did Rose think that would lead to a trip to NYC to meet Mathew.

I like anything to do British culture so I was interested in learning little about cricket; I think I will stick to American Baseball (LOL). I highly recommended this story to anyone looking for an enjoyable sports romance.

A great read about order. Mielitta is a young girl who hasn’t reached maturity in a fantasy world where everyone has. She continues her life as a servant despite being dissatisfied with life. One day, she serves wine at a meeting and discovers there is more to this world than she thought with a mysterious Forest nobody is allowed to enter.. Fleeing some bullies, she finds herself there and the wonders of the world are revealed to her. Can she keep it a secret and keep her life?
A great read. Well developed plot with twists and turns. Well developed characters like Mielitta trying her best and wanting more from life. Great cast of supporting characters like the bully Jannlou or the supportive Declsn.
I loved the visual detail throughout the novel like with the forest deep and green and tall trees with the wind for a sense of a magical undiscovered land of wonder. Or the wonderful use of the senses with the smells translating to words with their bright scents and colours so vivid its as if you’re actually thee. Or the water telling its story, revealing the world to us and her in a simple way and beautifully written.
A wonderful example of world building in a fantasy world with its own rules and societies and laws and histories. I loved the mystery around the Forest, making the reader wonder why the rules are there and keeps them reading to find out. I also loved the scenes with the Council, with different magical abilities from many fantasy novels with the hair and the words as something new and exciting. I also loved the use of the bees and her magic, something different to the fantasy genre, fresh and exciting. I also liked the bo and the bottle and the riddle with an air of mystery and magic from the start, wonderfully written in small details. The only issue I would raise is that there were some repetition at the beginning, which could have been reduced. Overall, a great read and I would give it five stars.

The Brass Compass: A Novel by Ellen Butler is an historical fiction story. The story is told in both the past and present which gives it a certain mysterious quality. It is also a spy thriller and holds a lot of history. Our female lead is strong and is on a journey that is dangerous and I found myself getting lost in the storyline.

Lily Saint James is an agent and secretly gathers information for the Allies. She is a very smart lady who is very stubborn and is fierce determined. Even when things go wrong and she has to flee she is determined to see it through, a race to save herself and get the information through.

This is a story that I recommend reading.

Murder Creek by Jane Suen is an intriging mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. Jane has done a great job at building the plot and the suspense that keeps you trying to put the pieces together. The story is told in the main characters POV as she is on the path to finding the truth of a mystery that surrounds Murder Creek.

Eve Sawyer wants to be a journalist, so when she stumbles across Murder Creek she knows she has to find the truth and what happened to Lacey Walken. This journey takes her to meet many people and find many clues but what she finds was far from what she expected.

I definitely recommended to all mystery fans.

The Matchmakers Match is Book 3 in the series and is just as good as the others in the series. I love any kind of romance, second chance or basically anything with dogs. These books all have dogs in them. Not just any dog but the dog holds important roles in the story itself.

In this book, Linc and Meredith meet one night and have the best night. Meredith is nursing a broken heart and figures she will throw caution to the wind and have fun for once. When she meets Linc he is everything her body could ever want in a man. She thought he said his name was Luke and he never corrected her. The next morning she is gone without a trace. These two thought they would never see each other again but, we know better don’t we? About a month later they see each other in church. It just so happens Linc is the best man and Meredith is the maid of honor in a wedding. What are the chances?
Meredith has to leave the rehearsal because of massive pains she is having and Linc is the one to take her out of there.
This is messing up all Meredith’s plans. She plans to have a baby on her own and doesn’t want a man in her life. Linc and Meredith try to fight the feelings they have for each other but it’s useless. The chemistry between them is insane even though a bunch of stuff happens between them they are both falling for each other hard! Then you throw the rescue dog into the mix.
What would’ve happened if Linc didn’t leave the army and set up that interview? Fate has a funny way of making things happen when they need to. Loved this book and cannot wait for more.

Bowled: Facing the Yorker of Love by Pamela Q. Fernandes is the first book in her To Love A Sportsman Series. This was my first book by this author but I’m sure it won’t be my last as I did really enjoy this book. The storyline was dynamic, and I loved the amount of supporting characters. I enjoyed all the detail that this author put into the story, there was so much that I was able to picture everything playing out in my mind.

Although, I will admit that at first I had a harder time getting into it as I found the storyline jumped around quite a bit, but I was able to get use to the writing style and ended up following along easily enough.

I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!

I love a good mystery/suspense book, and while I was hooked with this story it did lose my interest on a big subject matter that wasn’t given a hint at in the blurb. I try to avoid those storylines, as just a personal preference ( I will not disclose what that is here as it would spoil the story).
This had me scratching my head at what was happening and I will say i didn’t see the ending coming, like at all so it got me there, i was very shocked.
Was a very quick paced read, and it held my attention from beginning to end. I will read more by this author despite not liking a subject matter in this as it was needed for this story to work, just not my top choice to read about.

A Deal With Death is the fourth novel in the Crescent City Wolf Pack series by Carrie Pulkinen. This is my fourth novel by this author.

Odette Allemand is a woman who doesn’t fear death since she practices Voodoo. She also gets reincarnated after she dies whenever she meets her soulmate. Not wanting to die this time, she is sure she can beat the cycle.

James Malveaux is werewolf who hasn’t seen Odette in years but once the two meet again, his wolf wants to claim her as his mate.

Can the two change fate and have a happy life together?

This is my favorite of the series so far. The premise was different than anything I’ve read before and the romance between the two felt refreshing and different because of that.

I loved the main character’s name because it was unique and it made me think of the Swan Princess movie.

I hope there is another novel in this series soon.

The Good Neighbors by Kiersten Modglin is a book so full of suspense and intrigue that you will not be able to put it down!
This is a new author to me so I didn’t know what to expect from her work going in. However the rave reviews and the blurb definitely piqued my interest. The rest of the book then definitely lived up to my expectations.
The book was full of twists and turns throughout. I never knew what was going to happen next which just added to the overall feel of the book. I was hooked from start to finish – so much so that I found I could not put the book down and had to read it all in one sitting! Now that I have discovered this author and her work I will definitely be checking out more that she has on offer!

Queen of the Warrior Bees is the first book in Jean Gill’s Natural Forces series. It tells the story of Mielitta, a young woman struggling to find her place in a tightly controlled world where perfection is prized above all else. Developing magical bee powers doesn’t exactly help her fit in but does at least give her a sense of purpose as she now has to consider the bees’ agenda as well as her own.
Something I particularly enjoyed about this book is the focus on scent in descriptions of characters and places. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this much detail about how everything smells, and I love it! It added an extra dimension to everything and helped me to immerse myself in the scenes.
The world-building is great. There’s so much originality, presented to us in a way that feels familiar. The contrast between the dull Citadel and the vibrant Forest particularly stood out to me – kind of like a Dorothy landing in full-colour Oz.
The story is very intriguing. There are many mysteries to unravel and deceptions to overcome. Mielitta is observant and resourceful, enabling her and us to glimpse the secrets of the Citadel and reveal its corruptions.
This is an enjoyable book – it gets five stars from me! I’d recommend it to Young Adult fantasy fans with an interest in the environment – plenty of trees and bees! I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

What a read! Jane Suen is a new author for me and I absolutely loved this book. It was fantastically written, flowed from chapter to chapter and completely and utterly pulled you into the read! It had you on the edge of your seat with the suspense and mystery that is weaved through this read. This read was written in such a way you could mentally visualise what was happening in the story, and it made you believe you were there alongside the characters living out the story. With not wanting to give to much of the story away, you will definitely not be disappointed you picked up this read!
I can’t wait to see what else this author brings, ill be eagerly waiting for whatever comes next!

A.M Myers has such an incredible writing style that totally pulls you in and holds you captivated right from the start. Once again this has got an amazing storyline, and even better characters, characters that draw you into their journey. All of these books have a level of suspense, twists & turns and action but this one brings another level! A.M Myers has once again proved how incredibly brilliant this series is, and how this series shouldn’t be missed! She is one of my all-time favourite authors and I will continue to read anything by her!

You do not want to miss this read or this series!

WOWZERS! This book is so good! There is not a single moment while reading that I wasn’t completely hooked into finding out what was going on at the root of everything. I have never had a chance to read Kiersten Modglin’s work prior to this but I can say now, without a doubt, she is going to be one of my go to for a good mind-bending and twisty thriller read. I look forward to seeing what is already available from her and what will come in the future.

This is such a difficult book for me to summarize and review without spoiling too much of that massive twist that one does not see coming. Trust me, I read the reviews and kind of thought I knew what to expect. Nope, this book takes a whole different turn of events and I loved every stinking minute of it. Harper and Bryant are wonderful and deep characters. I felt as if I was right there with them and experiencing all the emotions that they were having. The detail and world building is fantastic. AS for details those you will have to take my word for it and scoop this amazing read up to find out for yourself. I promise you will love it if you are a thriller fan. I for one will be re-reading soon! Thanks for the fabulous book Ms. Modglin!

I just love the Man’s Best Friend series by Nicole Flockton. It is a sweet, fun, and innocent stories. Nicole Flockton has taken some of the most embarrassing situation and turn it into something magical. This story is one of those situations. Your best friend is getting married and you agree to be the maid of honor. You would not have any idea that the groom’s best man is the person who you may have had a one night stand with. This is Meredith Turner’s life and what’s worse is that she needs to leave the rehearsal dinner early. Lincoln Forrest has not had the best of luck with his decisions in his life. He is trying to turn his life around. In that process he is trying to help Meredith out. Will Meredith be able to let Lincoln help her? Will Lincoln be able to help Meredith? Will both Meredith and Lincoln overcome the awkwardness and move on with a fresh new relationship?

Murder Creek by Jane Suen is a great mystery despite the limited pages. Jane Suen’s writing ability is above par and it is evident in each and every story written. In Murder Creek, the author has created Eve who is an amazing lead character. The extent and depth she goes for something that drives her interest is remarkable despite the creepy chill of the events that occurred. The suspense was well paced to last throughout the story garnering reader interest, along with the overall story line. This is a must read author. Once you read one, you’ll want to read more!!

A Deal with Death (Crescent City Wolf Pack Book 4) by Carrie Pulkinen is a paranormal/fantasy romance. This novel follows in the series closely with the previous books, but could be read separately. I do highly recommend that the books be read in order so that you get a full understanding in the depth this series provides and additional background on some of the characters that appear throughout the series.

In A Deal with Death spirits and shifters are the focus; the story line is high speed and exciting from beginning to end. Carrie Pulkinen had me sitting on the edge of my seat practically biting my nails as I crested page after page to see what fates were about to be unfolded next in this book. Odette and James are magnificent in this story and I loved how they were each missing something, but were drawn towards one another regardless. This author is highly talented and a great story teller!

Steele Resolve is the sixth and final instalment of the Hawke Family series. Returning to New Orleans and the world of the Hawke’s always has me excited, but there was something extra intriguing about this story. Following the Hawke’s enemy, Luca Abello, was something I was both intrigued and nervous about. After everything his family has done to the Hawke’s, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to connect with him or his life. How wrong could I be?!

Our connection to the Hawke’s isn’t just through Luca. The other part of the book is written from Byron’s point of view, a long-standing employee and friend of the Hawke family. I immediately liked Byron and connected with his character. He’s open, honest and loyal and an all-round good person. This left me wondering even more about how someone so kind-hearted was going to find a connection with Luca. Well, it turns out Luca isn’t as bad as I thought. In fact, I ended up rather liking him, too! Luca has spent most of his life lying and putting up a false-front, so seeing him be so raw and real with Byron was so much fun to read. They really had an instant connection, and while this isn’t everyone’s favourite thing to read, I really felt like the chemistry they had was real and believable.

As with every Hawke Family instalment, this book had its drama and danger. The ‘oh my god’ moment in this book really took me by surprising; I actually had to stop and re-read to make sure I had read things correctly. It was such a shock and so unsuspecting, I loved it! But by far, my most favourite part of this book was the epilogue. No spoilers here but it was so so beautiful. It is, 100%, a very satisfying ending. For a series I love so much, this was a great addition and such a wonderful way to end things; what a bittersweet read!

Murder Creek by Jane Suen a five-star read that is worth solving. This is my favourite of this author, there was just something special about it, it really takes you into the story, it gives you the brain itch, you need to figure it out alongside Eve. Eve was a surprise, she was almost like a dog with a bone at times, but it meant that her passion flew from the page. I must say don’t start this one when you don’t have time as you wont want to put it down, Jane Suen has a great way of pulling you in and making you care, Eve feels so well done.

Murder Creek by Jane Suen is a wonderfully written fast paced story that pulls you in from the very beginning and doesn’t let go till the last page. I found myself on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what happens next. At times I felt as if I was right there with Eve on her journey to uncovering what really happened to Lacey Walken .Eve is drawn to Murder Creek and the unsolved disappearance of Lacey Walken. Eve is very determined to find out what really happened..Will Eve find out what happened to Lacey? Can she solve the mystery? Will she survive the investigation? Find out what happens next in this captivating suspense story that is a must read. I love this Author and can’t wait to see what she brings us next.

The Matchmaker’s Match (Man’s Best Friend Book 3) by Nicole Flockton. This is a sweet, emotional love story about Meredith Turner and Lincoln Forrest. Meredith hasn’t had the best of luck when it comes to men so when she sees the guy (Lincoln) who she had a one night stand with she’s so embarrassed. She knows she has a bad track record but she can’t resist Lincoln. Lincoln has also made a lot of bad choices, the worst one being leaving the Army. He was a former K-9 handler as well and he’s looking for a new career. When Lincoln and Meredith meet again at a Wedding they can’t resist each other. The sparks fly between them. Buster the dog is so adorable in this book and I wanted a Buster of my own. Will Meredith and Lincoln try to make it work between them or will they let past hurts keep them from having a future together?

Bowled by Pamela Q. Fernandes a five-star read that should be a six. This is number one in the To love a sports man series and I can’t wait for more. This was such a great story, I loved the fact that it was about Cricket, something I secretly adore (and not just for the cute white outfits). Mathew Anderson wasn’t always someone I liked, but when I got to know the real him, not just the façade he shows us just how special he is. The second chance romance in this story is believable and honest, it shows us how beautiful life can be when we need it to be, it also shows us life isn’t always perfect and sometimes it needs a good shake. Rose was full of surprises for me, she made me feel a lot more than I imagined she would.

The Brass Compass: A Novel by Ellen Butler. WOW! I usually don’t even take a second glance at Historical books but I’m so glad I did this one. Its one of the best books I’ve read this year. Its the story of Lily Saint James, a american, who grew up traveling Europe, learning languages every where she went. She has been recruited to join the Civilian OSS (Office of Strategic Services) as a spy during World War II in Germany. Its like she was made for this job. After her training she is offered the job of Nanny in a high German Official’s home where she hears all kinds of information. She relay’s this information to her contact in Berlin as he is getting arrested. Knowing she is in danger she runs. Will she make it to the right people with the information she has or will she be captured? This book was amazing and it will suck you in.
