Of Magic & Scales by Natalina Reis – Review by Karyn Taylor

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Of Magic and Scales is a great M/M fantasy, romantic thriller by Natalina Reis that had me captivated from the very beginning, right up to the very end. It is my first read by this author and I’m pretty sure it won’t be my last as I enjoyed this book very much.
I do like a good M/M romance but this one is that little bit different in that one of the main characters, Nael, is a merman (or merrow as they prefer to be called). If, like me you are wondering how to pronounce Nael’s name it’s pronounced Nuh/l/ (It was annoying me to the point that I messaged the author to ask!.
Aiden Mercer has been able to see magicals since he can remember and he’s not their biggest fan since he’s had a few unpleasant run in’s with some of them. That all changes when Nael Fourchard enters into his life. Many magicals are being murdered and Nael wants Aiden to help him find out who the killer is. Added to this is the incredible sexual chemistry between the 2 men although Aiden finds Nael very rude and abrupt and doesn’t like him very much.
What follows is a great tale of intrigue and mystery, delving into the world of witches, fairies, trolls and many other magical creatures as Aiden and Nael try to find the killer, putting their lives in great danger on many occasions.
This book has some great secondary characters, in particular Aiden’s assistant at his coffee shop and especially Nael’s younger sister Vee. I absolutely adored Vee. She has absolutely no filter and is hilarious.
This is a great read but has left some questions still to be answered (I’m not going to give any spoilers), so I’m really hoping that there is more to come from these fantastic characters.
