Devil’s Breath by Lang Johnson – Review by Sara Grantham

Devil's BreathDevil’s Breath by Lang Johnson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Right from the first chapter, this book was dark and sultry and addictive. This isn’t your typical romance novel – it has drugs, murder, betrayal, secrets, lies, and pain. But it also has longing, attraction, lust, and love. All of the feelings in Devil’s Breath felt organic. It was not over-the-top cheesy, but it still showed an instant connection between Cassius and Sera that only kept building and deepening, even when that made everything more complicated. After all, nothing is easy when you are falling for someone you are meant to kill.

If you are in the mood for a ghost story but want to keep it light and carefree this is a great book for you! The main character undergoes a medical procedure and discovers afterwards she has a psychic ability to see and hear ghosts at the hospital she works at. The other characters are so much fun. Highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a light paranormal adventure.

Great start to the series. Lots of twists and turns along the way to continue into the next book.

Remington has been in love with his best friend’s sister since they were kids, only he didn’t realize it until she made a recent reappearance back in his life. Out of deference for his friend, Remi tries to fight the attraction. Audri grew up with Remington always there. He is just like the rest of her brother’s friends, right? Not anymore. Audri is noticing him in all kinds of new ways.

As the past comes for both of them can they fight their fears to find a way to each other? It will be great to see what happens in the series!!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Donovan the three year old vampire lawyer is back! This time there is war raging between the Half Bloods who are fighting for survival and a place within the Vampire Nation who treat half bloods cruelly.

While this war is raging, they also have to be careful not to let it be known to the humans.

Donovan and his family are fighting the Vampire Coalition that wants them dead.

I haven’t read the second novel but this was also a run read but it was just as suspenseful as the first novel. There felt like there was so much at stake and I was on the edge of my seat as I read.

I will need to go back to read the second novel and find out how Donovan and their characters found themselves fighting the Vampire Coalition but I also hope we see Donovan again.

This is the second book in the series. I enjoyed it a lot. Great character development and wonderful descriptions of the world in which you are taken to. With this being a viking fantasy book, you also get a lot of realistic parts as well. It’s a good mix in my opinion. The ending will definitely leave you wanting to start the next book!

Isabella Bride of Ohio: American Mail Order Bride by Debra Parmley – Review by Lisa Helmick

Isabella Bride of Ohio: American Mail-Order Brides SeriesIsabella Bride of Ohio: American Mail-Order Brides Series by Debra Parmley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a wonderful story that easily held my interest. I love mail-order bride stories as they are from a time that seems so foreign to me now. Yes they are fairly predictable but the chance these women took is amazing. In here we meet Isabella who is young in age as well as maturity. Her adventure begins and she goes through a few ups and downs including some scary moments especially once married. I could feel her desperation and worry but she was resigned to make the best of it.

Overall this is a good story that I enjoyed. It isn’t flashy or highly emotional but its everything I would expect from this type of story. I connected with Isabella as she struggled through on her journey. This is a first time author for me. The writing is good and the flow is nice.

The third book in this series was AMAZING! I could not put it down! I highly recommend reading them in order when you decide to read these books as the order flows and makes the stories have that much more of an impact! The way that this author writes makes it feel as though I am submerged in the story as much as the characters. This was such a quick read for me as I could not put the books down! This is the first book I have read from this author and now she has a new fan. I love a good small town romance but this story exceeded all my expectations. This book gives you three amazing stories. If you need a pick me up, this book is the one to read. You will fall in love with these characters right from the start. I could not put this book down until the end and it only took me a little over a day to devour these amazing stories.

Sadie loves reading her romance books but she just can’t find the right guy. She goes to the bookstore owner for some advice. Sadie is looking at some books when she bumps into a very cute guy. She gets to talking to him and they have a lot of things in common. Sadie can’t believe that she might have found the one she has been looking for but does he feel the same about her?

Fiona loves being an author and she finds herself in a small little town. She is going to do a signing and she is in complete shock when she sees her ex husband that she is still in love with.

Leona loves to help other people find love but herself. She needs to update the bookstore. Leona meets the very handsome Jon. Leona is head over heels but he has young kids and she doesn’t know if she can handle a family right now.

Enthralling thriller
This book takes you on a roller coaster of events and keeps you guessing right til the very end. Took me by surprise. The writing is good and I was quickly drawn into the story. The twists were delivered seamlessly and had me searching for the breadcrumbs. This is clean in the romance department but does touch on murder, guns, and drug use.

Dark Sparrow Box Set: The Complete 6-Book Series (A Dark Sparrow Novel) by India Kells – Review by HELEN DAWKINS

Dark Sparrow Box Set: The Complete 6-Book SeriesDark Sparrow Box Set: The Complete 6-Book Series by India Kells
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Absolutely best series/box set ever! The series includes 6 books, starting with Lost Bastard, then follows Cold Bastard, Wild Bastard, True Bastard, Dark Bastard, and King Bastard. I highly recommend this box set. What is better than getting all of the books in one set? The books are romantic, steamy, and action-packed drama. Each character went through their own trials, but the family always sticks together to fight their evil father.

Book 1
This book was a serious page turner, and constant mystery of “what will happen next?”. The book is based off the mob/mafia underworld and the twists and turns are bountiful. The character building is amazing and it’s very easy to get attached to each character. Literally no one can be trusted. Deva is on the run from her father because she was sold off to the underworld. She has now started a new life as a physical therapist, that is until a favor is needed to be collected upon by the woman who rescued her. Beatrice runs a “company” called Purgatory and she refers to her agents as “Dark Sparrows”. She has called upon them to help out a friend, Lazarus King, to help find and protect his “bastard” brothers his evil father has “sired”. Deva is definitely an amazing badass woman, but everyone has that something to make them tick. First of the brothers to be found is Alexksei, who ends up being Deva’s weakness. A brilliant first book to an amazing series.

Book 2
The second book was filled with steamy romance and action. Zoe is such a strong and independent woman; she is also an excellent translator. She comes to work for a man named Archer as a “Dark Sparrow” and the intensity is insane between them. The “evil father” Finch is more active in the background in book 2 than he was in book 1. This book is a little on the darker side of romance. Has lots of unexpected events.

Book 3
This book is all about second chances with Kai and Izzy. There are an immense number of secrets between the two of them, which slowly drives them apart. Again, the book had a good mix of romance, action, drama and danger. Kai is a strong alpha and Izzy is his weakness, and after bringing him to his knees, he vows to never let anyone, or anything affect him that way again. Izzy is the owner of a PR firm. She is approached by Jamison Finch (the evil father) to help him, but she does not know if it is a good idea to work with him or not.

Book 4
“True Bastard” is between Liam and Catriona. Liam is headstrong and determined to be absolutely nothing like his father. He will do anything for Catriona even though his mind pulls him to do something different. Catriona has a heart of gold, and brings happiness to everyone she meets, she is also a Nun. In this book a bigger picture is given on the brothers and the past and present father issues.

Book 5
This book will invoke insane feelings of anger towards Finch. Ellie is a 911 operator, and on the brink of an emotional and mental crisis. Sam’s past is a large focus in this book. The accidental call that Sam makes to Ellie may actually be what saves them both from utter turmoil or will be the cause of their destruction. Dark Sparrows are not used in this book, and you do not hear from Gabrielle at all.

Book 6
Excellent ending to the series. Finally, you get more of a glimpse of Lazarus and what may or may not be his happy ending. Sasha is an independent woman, but Lazarus seems to think she needs constant protection. The ending is a little anti-climactic BUT wraps up the story in a nice bow. This is a must read.

Love is Worth Fighting for (The Meraki Series Book 3) by Effie Kammenou

Love is Worth Fighting for is the third book in The Meraki Series. This is a wonderfully written Contemporary Romance that once you start reading its hard to put down. I recommend reading the first two books if you haven’t already but it can be read as a standalone. My emotions were all over the place and at times my heart was broken. This is a frenemy you don’t want to miss. This is Krystina’s story . She kinda has known what she wanted to do with her life and how go achieve it but her pesky frenemy being around is a bit frustrating. But when something unexpected happens she starts to see him in a different light. What will happen when she lets her feelings get involved? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I can’t wait to read more from this Author. This is another incredible read by this author.

This book was absolutely gorgeous! I loved seeing how the characters grew and changed, taking risks and doing what they felt they needed to do to save each other and their community. Pasha and Ryn were such fun characters to see build their relationship and grow to understand each other more. Kasper and Owen’s brotherly love and Kasper’s perseverance in trying to save Owen was beautiful. When the author added Maris into that mix, it was amazing to see the bonds she had with all of the characters, but especially with Kasper. I adored the fantasy and it was just altogether an amazing journey to take with all of these characters.

Vive la Resistance (Donovan Trait Book 3) by Seelie Kay – Review by Beverly Finnie

Vive la ResistanceVive la Resistance by Seelie Kay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love this series! I also love this author!
Vive La Resistance! I say that with authority as if I’m involved. Because that’s exactly how this author makes you feel. That you are the half-breed fighting to survive!
Donovan Trait is back! He’s one of my favorite Vampire character’s ever written, but I digress. We are at war, the Coalition vs Trait’s. Well it started out that way. But as you read through book three in the Donovan Trait series, you begin to realize it’s bigger than revenge and silencing the Trait’s.
Now don’t take me saying war lightly because yes there may be some fire power, this is more cyber and technological warfare. Headed by the Lynx, he and his team find a way to get the messages out to half breeds. First starting with subliminal messages, then creating an app for protection, as well as creating units of humans to unknowingly keep the half breeds safe.
Do they succeed?
What other obstacles present themselves?
Who will come out the victor of this war?
Just a few questions and as you read I’m sure you will have others.
Also another big theme throughout is vampire infertility, and why all the sudden one day it ceased to exist.
The author does a fabulous job tying the two themes together in an unexpected way. She has a knack for that type of writing. It keeps you interested and guessing. You will not want to put this book down. But you must start at book one if you haven’t, it will be so worth it! I guarantee you will fall in love with Donovan Trait just like I have!

This was my first read in the series and of this author. The writing in this book is good. The details that really draw the picture for what you’re reading is so descriptive. I was a little lost at the beginning because I didn’t read books 1 or 2. But this book is so good I quickly got adapted to what was going on. Even though this is a YA book, it seems like a YA novel that doesn’t “baby” down the book if that makes sense. It’s something that my younger self would’ve also enjoyed.

This was a great 5 star read. My emotions were all over the place while I was reading. Krystina and Loukas were great. You get pulled in right from the beginning. I loved how Krystina and her family opened up their home to Loukas. She is a little annoyed having Loukas around so much but when things take an unexpected twist, Loukas is there for her. The more time they spend together the closer they become. Will things get more serious for them? Will Krystina ever get her dream?

I have to say this is my favorite so far in the series. I had a few ugly cry moments. All of the characters added a great element to the story. Seeing a new book from Seelie I could not wait to grab it and get reacquainted with old friends.

Donovan Trait is back in this original twisted paranormal Vampire romantic suspense tale. It is the third book in the series and a it only gets better. This is one series that you want to read the books in order to ensure you get the whole story. Not everything is doom and gloom. Seelie ensures to inject her humour throughout as only Seelie can.

Just to recap;

In book 1 – Donovan Trait is a lawyer who loves the lime light and a vampire. He loves a human and now they have a killer on their hands.

In book 2 – Donovan Trait and his bride are pregnant on the run when ancient Vampire law let them down.

Vampires, Donovan Trait and his wife are still on the run from the Vampire Coalition and the despots who don’t want half-blood babies to taint their true blood world. What they don’t count on is the other half bloods are coming out of the woodwork to claim their place in the Vampire Nation.

What ensues is a bloody, bloody war, or does it? You will have to grab this series/book and find out. You will not be disappointed.

Victoriously Yours (Titans Of Manhattan #4)Victoriously Yours by Anise Storm
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book has all the feels and the author does a beautiful job at tackling hard circumstances. She beautifully navigates the issue of mental illness with love and understanding. As someone who has a personal battle with mental illness this is a tough issue to read about but I was very appreciative of how the author handled it.

At the start of the book we meet Jonas who has an unfavorable past and a line of conquests a million miles long. He takes on a dare to not only make the unpopular girl more presentable but also to deflower her. Mackenzie thinks that he could be the one until she finds out her transgression has been broadcasted to the entire school and from there it seems her life is on a downward spiral. Jump to the future and both Jonas and Mackenzie have moved on, Jonas as a titan/hotel mogel and Kenzie as a chef just trying to land a huge contract. Unfortunately, fate seems to have other plans as the contract Mackenzie wants just so happens to be working for Jonas, the seemingly devil himself.

Unfortunately there are no winners in this game they play. As secrets are unraveled and the past exposed it seems that the past may not be all it seems. With everything on the line can Jonas and Mackenzie find their happy ever after? Or was their relationship doomed from the start?

As I started reading the book I truly did not like Jonas at all. Not his character or his moral compass. Yet by the end of the book I could begin to understand him more as well as soften up my feelings towards him. That is a feat in and of itself for an author to successfully do. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. If you like mystery, suspense, and what seems like a love gameshow then you will love this book.

PREMEDITATED: A Trust Betrayed, Lives Sabotaged, A Love Undaunted (Agents of Justice Book 2) by Susanna Haymond – Review by Alexandria Richard

PremeditatedPremeditated by Susanna Haymond
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 stars

Partially a novel about “who dun it” and partially a novel about “who is ___ really?” I have to say I was NOT expecting the outcome.

Enjoyed this semi-murder mystery novel. A highly addictive street drug is being fought against by pillars in the community, and when those pillars start showing symptoms of having taken the drug, or even dying because of it, the authorities have to wonder why and how. When the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) and the FBI get involved they will get to the bottom of who is knocking those pillars down, sometimes to six feet under.

I had to demote my rating to 4 stars because the novel is written in third person and it was sometimes hard for me to follow who it was talking about when the internal thoughts or feeling arose.

I did like that we got to see a few “main characters” throughout the novel, such as Anne, Ashley, Josh, Grant, and more. Each character had their specialty which brought more information to the table to help figure out the who and why of the crimes.

The novel certainly lives up to its name, with the perpetrator meaning to hurt certain people for their own gain. Also lives up to it’s description of being a Christian suspense, with statements like “praise God” or “it’s God’s will” at times, and the book starting with two bible passages, but it’s not overwhelming so someone not of the Christian faith can also enjoy the book.

There is some explicitness in the novel, such as shootouts and descriptions of overdosing, as well as murder, but I found those scenes to be well done and didn’t find it overly graphic.

CW: murder, overdose, drug use, kidnapping, assault, gun use.

Queen of Hearts: Heels, Rhymes, & Nursery Crimes Vol. 21 is part of a multi-volume series reworking classic nursery rhymes. I was excited when I saw this author had a new book out. The series is standalone stories, but I want to read at least a few more to delve further into this world. I enjoyed the main character, Mimi, and how her story was built. Men might find her evil, but she is just trying to punish those that are cruel and make things better for the ones they torture. I like the twists and turns and the pace of the story. I look forward to this next author’s read and exploring more of this intriguing series.

What a wonderful historical murder mystery romance book! It was such a great quick read and hard to put down. Alyssa was my favorite character from the start and the author did not disappoint in her story.

To think that this group of girls left their home country to basically be mail order brides for these men in the Canadian frontier. The trials they endured. The author wrote it so you are basically following their journey and finding themselves. Everyone finding a purpose, even Alyssa at the end.

The author wrote it so that it’s not a male character who turned out to save everyone and I loved that! That she wrote all the female characters as strong people. This will not be the last book of hers that I read!

A very interesting book that was full of intrigue all on its own! I loved reading this one, as I love my shape shifter books and how each one varies in what it brings. This one was very special in the sense it brought a wide range of plot and character development, I very much enjoyed it!

I enjoyed reading this one, as we follow Nolen and his story. He alone had a lot of character development. From what he started as and what he ended as. I felt for him, he had rights that were being taken form him, and he had to fight and prove. I find as humans we constantly must do that through out life. So that greatly appealed to me. The story all in all captivated me immensely, and I very much enjoyed reading this book plus the author’s writing style was fantastic! Loved it!

Amazing book for all it brought to us as the reader. I could not put this one down! I was hooked and held there till completion! Loved it! Highly recommend this must-read book!

The Mastermind (WaterFyre Rising Book 1) by Nadia Han – Review by Jessica Stone

The Mastermind this book is just that, masterfully written! This intense, edge of your seat, brothers best friend, billionaire boss, alpha male, suspense romance with just the right amount of spice hit the spot!

Remington Starke, is a self made billionaire with a dark past, and a brilliant mind. Brought back to his home town due to business with WaterFyre, a project he and his childhood friends are working on. Remington soon runs into his best friends little sister, after buying the. Implant she works for and soon realizes she isn’t so little any more.

Audri Wu, is just a girl trying to find her way, she’s tired of breaking her back for a company that doesn’t respect her, but is unwilling to rely on the money that her brother tries to provide for her. With a passion for making beautiful jewelry, she’s just trying to find a way to make her passion her full time job.
After years apart, both having grown up quite a bit, Audri and Remington cannot deny the burning attraction they have for one another. Unfortunately dark secrets and even darker dangers from their past and present seem to be following them both closely. Will the both be able to beat their pasts and find a to be together or will the past finally win?

I’m pretty big on alpha male romances, and this one did not disappoint in that aspect, the fight for Remi to deny Audri the one thing he wants most, made my toes curl with anticipation the entire book. I love that the author made Audri soft and vulnerable, but strong willed and career minded at the same time. I love a strong male lead but I LOVE a stronger female MC. This book does all that an more, with a dash of suspense, due to hidden secrets and dark past to add spice to a book that could solely be a romance brings this book to a whole new level.

This is the first book from this series and from this author!! I’m very excited to explore the world she creates and to get to get to know all the WaterFyre men a lot better.
