When Magic Calls: A Collection of Modern Fairy Tales by Caitlin Berve is a YA fantasy fairytale retelling collection that provides an enchanting read. This is my first book by Ms. Berve, so what better way to get a feel for her work than a book with lots of short stories to explore.
As you would expect from fairytale retellings, this is woven with magic, the paranormal, curses, a little mythology, imagination, fate & destiny, action, adventure, drama, twists, and emotion. Ms. Berve has cleverly crafted her stories in such a way that they are quite unique from the ‘originals’. There are also some illustrations sprinkled through the book too, that add to the charm of the collection.
If you love fairytale retelling, short quick and easy reads, and originality, then this might just be the book for you.
