Can a wall be seen through two people be so different? The answer is simply yes. There could be a right side and a wrong side. It depends on what side you are on. In this story, Kate McGahan shows us that in this beautifully written story. Her emotions are in the story. She puts it out there for me with her descriptive writing style. Her characters are complex and makes the story come to life. A wall is to keep someone out, and someone in. This story is about the love story of Sarah and Benito. There is a wall in the physical and mental sense of the word. Sarah is from New York, who lives in Arizona and Benito is from Mexico. Sarah works through the cultural difference between her and Benito. Will Benito fight through the cultural differences for love? I highly recommend this story. I would keep a box of Kleenex close by just in case you need them.

The Slaughter of Leith Hall by Lexie Conyngham. I love a book that really keeps me on the edge with mystery and this author did just that. That characters pulled me in immediately and were very easy to connect with. I’m really picky when it comes to historical type novels I find myself getting bored easily but I didn’t have that issue here, from page one I felt engaged in this storyline and following great characters. The storyline is well written and unique. It’s paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking. The characters truly bring the words to life. I excited to read more from this author. Four stars and highly recommended. I ask that if this isn’t in your preferred genre that you still give it a chance because I promise you won’t regret it.

The Trouble With Paradise (The Madeline Dawkins Series Book 4) by Cynthia Hamilton. Another fantastic addition to a series I’ve decided is in my top favorites for this years. Sometimes I find series that go for a while can lose something along the way and I get bored but once again this author proves that’s not always the case. I’ve loved watching these characters grow throughout this series. This book involves two different cases which may make you think it’ll be too busy but I for one found it’s got a perfect balance. The characters pull you into their world so completely I lost track of time and the outside world for a while and loved every minute. The storyline is well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking anything. I’m giving this story a five star review and highly recommend it. Can’t wait for more!

This is a well written and extremely detailed historical novel about a young girl, Sarah Tarbell, living in 1707 and it’s the story of her life and abduction by Mohawk Indians. I struggled with how to rate this book as it has a complicated narrative, on one hand I read it as a well researched novel of life for a young girl from a Puritan family living between 1707 to 1710, however, if you look at the title it says, “as her soul remembers”. Now I am fairly open minded and come from a family who’s Grandmother was a member of a Spiritualist Church and I have been to a seance, so the author, Stuart Ledwith saying he has a “gift best described as a sense of ‘knowing’”, is not completely strange to me and the idea of those that have died being able to speak to those left behind is not a new one. However, I am sure that for some readers believing that the book has been written by Stuart via Sarah Tarbell’s soul maybe a little too strange, unrealistic or unbelievable. In the end I rated it as a five star read, but I understand that the novel may not be as popular with some readers. In the Preamble, Stuart, explains that souls like Sarah are able to communicate with him, “by her voice, her feelings”, as well as showing him, “snapshots of a person, place or thing”, Sarah can also show Stuart, “action sequences”, which allow him “to describe and delineate their meaning”. The book is written in Sarah’s voice, the narrative is of someone looking back on their life and remembering, and what a life to remember. The storyline, recounting Sarah’s life is fast paced and full of drama and adventure. Sarah is abducted at the age of fourteen and then adopted by a Mohawk family following a long and dangerous trek. She learnt their language and even fell in love with her captor before being sold to a wealthy French family. From there she then lived with the nuns of Lachine and eventually became a healer for the Mohawks and other locals and travellers to the area. Following her lovers death she took her vows to become a nun herself. Sarah lived such a varied and in a way exciting life, although also a scary and uncertain one, having to overcome so many obstacles and hardships. Stuart Ledwith took me on an emotional rollercoaster and I definitely needed a box of tissues handy whilst reading this novel. I was fully immersed in Sarah Tarbell and her story, so much so that once I had started this book I finished it within the day. Stuart says, “She hopes you enjoy the journey” and I definitely did. I recommend this novel and advise that you read it with an open mind.

Her Blackened Soul is the first book in the Blackened Series by Isra Sravenheart. This story is a unique fairytale from the “villains” point of view. I wish it was written in 1st-person point of view so we could really get in the mind of the main character, Lady Isra. I feel like there was a lot more telling instead of showing of events and emotions. I like that Lady Isra owns the fact that she is evil and doesn’t really care what others think of her. I would like to see more character growth, but that may come in later books in the series. The story kind of ends on a cliffhanger, so I’m hoping Lady Isra finds herself with more love in her heart.

Flicker to Fire is the exciting conclusion of Amanda Marin’s Crimson Sash trilogy. I’ve somehow ended up binging the series in a day and a half because I just couldn’t put it down, and whenever I finished a book I HAD to know what happened next. Seriously good. Crimson Sash is a dystopian YA series which follows Neve Hall and Micah Ward, whose love for each other is forbidden by the strict rules of the Nation they both come from. Their feelings for each other, and the painful consequences of their relationship, have helped them to see the deeper flaws in the Nation and how it is run, and they can’t let things continue as they are. In Flicker to Fire, Neve and Micah work within Sans Murs, an activist movement fighting for freedom of movement between the Nation and the New Republic, and seeking to put an end to the human rights violations in the Nation. The focus on Sans Murs allows for an interesting exploration of activism, with characters conflicting on the best methods to achieve their goals, and balancing protecting individuals and fighting larger-scale issues. This book is full of twists – it really kept me on the edge of my seat. I remember noticing I was getting near the end and thinking I knew how things would wrap up – I was very wrong! I’ve really enjoyed this whole series, and this is another five stars from me! I’d definitely recommend reading the books in order (starting with North to Nara) – you’ll get a lot more context that way as well as a chance to build a connection with the characters. I’d recommend this to teen and YA readers who are concerned about social issues – Marin uses speculative fiction to shine a light on many issues and explore some “what if?”s, as well as showing many aspects of activism with relatable and inspiring characters.

Blue Magnolia by W.F. Ranew is the second book in the Red Farlow Mysteries series. This book can be read as a stand-alone and does not have to be read in order. I have to say at first I found the book the be a little slow starting and a bit confusing. It was almost like the author didn’t quite find pace with the book until a little way into it. However once he did the book was definitely and interesting read. It moved well and the characters all seemed to be developed at the right pace for them. I wasn’t fully taken with the main characters however I also got the impression you weren’t necessarily meant to be, and that it was his interactions with the other characters that really bolstered him. Overall I found the book to be enjoyable and I was definitely intrigued as to how it would all play out. This was a good book and I would definitely look to add book one in the future.
I love a good historical romance and I absolutely adored this book! It had everything I love in this genre! The characters were great, the setting was perfect (Cornwall just happens to be my favourite place in the UK) and the authors writing was brilliant. The descriptive detail meant that I could imagine what I was reading and what I read was fantastic! I was hooked from beginning to end – I love Genevieve – she was so funny and spunky! Some of the banter between her and Sebastian was great! I think it was obvious that they were so perfect for each other! There were some twists and turns in the story which I loved. I absolutely took these characters into my heart from Sebastian to Genevieve and her family! I think lovers of historical romance will absolutely love this book – I absolutely recommend it! I can’t wait to read more from this author again in the future!!

It’s been a while since I picked up a book by Ms Boyes so when I saw this one I thought I need my mob fix so I dived right in and wow what a book it was! Not that I expected anything less from one of my favourite authors but this was honestly a fantastic read – action from beginning to end and amazing characters that drag you along for the ride! I think I have to say this book might not be for everybody but I was completely sucked into Trey’s story. Apart from Trey – a love to hate character maybe, I have to say Kristina was one brilliant female lead! She had this strength and confidence about her that I absolutely loved especially considering what she had been through! Trey was a pretty complex character but I loved getting to know him more and I loved the two of them together! If you’re looking for a darker read then this book will be 100% for you! I loved every second of it and I can’t wait for more!!

I won’t lie, I get excited when I see there is a new Russian Mob Chronicles book from Shandi Boyes. When I found out we were getting Trey’s book it was even sweeter of a deal. I loved him and the tidbits we got in Nikolai’s story so I knew this was gonna be one I was going to adore. I was not for one moment disappointed! I would recommend that you read the other books in the series before diving into this one. You will understand the world a bit better for sure that Trey is a part of.
When Trey meets Kristinia he is immediately drawn to her and consumed really by her. Trey is known for his protective personality and would do anything to protect the ones he loves and now Kristina is apart of that category. She has had one hell of a past six years as she was trafficked in the sex-trafficking trade, something that is an extremely difficult topic to tackle anytime but especially in the world we are currently living. I love how Shandi Boyes doesn’t shy away from the dark sides of this life and keeps things raw and gritty the whole time. I would say if you don’t like or enjoy dark romance maybe keep that in mind before picking this one up. I can’t wait to see what comes next from Boyes!

Trey is the 7th book in the Russian Mob Chronicles by Shandi Boyes. Some of the books in this series can be read as a standalone and this is one of those. I had previously read some, but not all, of the books in this series and did not feel that I was missing any relevant information to allow me to understand and enjoy this book. I first became a fan of Shandi Boyes when I read the Enigma Series as I loved the gritty characters and storylines that she writes and this book is exactly that. The storyline is dark and gritty and the characters are equally hard and gritty. K has to be one of the gutsiest and determined heroines I’ve ever read. When you read just how much she has gone through in her life, you can’t help but be amazed by her grit and determination. I also adored Trey. He may be a ruthless killer but K brings out a whole different side of him no one has ever seen and he never knew he was capable of. This book is filled with so much danger and intrigue. You are pulled in from the very first page and this book just does not let you go. ‘Page turner’ does not do it justice. I did not want to put this book down, it was so good.

Her Blackened Soul (The Blackened Series Book 1) by Isra Sravenheart This is my first book by this author but it won’t be my last. Its a very dark, mysterious book. A different take on fairytale stories where the villain is the main character. Lady Isra is a very powerful witch with a black heart but she also has depth to her. Due to past relationships she has major trust issues and maybe even anger issues. Isra hates humans because they have feelings and she especially hates anyone weak. When Kane approaches her for help she offers it but in has conditions. Will she end up killing him? When the humans send her on a trip she meets Lillian, Kane’s fiance and Lillian may change Isra’s opinion of some humans. Astrid is Isra’s closest friend and he is her eyes and ears to protect her. What will Isra do to Astrid? Will she let her live or will Isra have a change of heart? This book was so vividly descriptive that I felt like I was in the forest with them. Read Her Blackened Soul to find out what happens.

I started reading Sky to Sea almost as soon as I’d finished the previous book in the Amanda Marin’s Crimson Sash series. I’m totally hooked! It’s an engaging dystopian YA story that engages with loads of big social issues in a well-developed world. Sky to Sea opens with Neve and Micah safely over the border. They’ve left the Nation that has tried to break and kill them behind, and are eager to start a new life in the New Republic. But they face challenges as they must prove their eligibility for immigration, or successfully claim asylum. There are language and culture barriers, skills that were in demand in the Nation that have no use in the Republic. Not to mention the hostility towards people from the Nation meaning that Neve and Micah never quite feel safe. Something I particularly liked about Sky to Sea is that it addresses Micah’s PTSD. After all that he endured in the previous book, he has deep wounds that require time, care and expert help to heal. Marin approaches the subject in a sensitive and clear manner. We see Neve and Micah recognising and accepting Micah’s PTSD, and Micah’s journey through treatment. I really appreciated his use of art to process his experiences. This is a great series! Definitely gets five stars from me. I would recommend reading it in order, starting with North to Nara, as this allows you to get to know the characters and the Nation (and the books are so good you’ll want to read them all eventually, so you might as well start at the beginning!). This is a great series for young adult and older teen readers who are concerned about social issues and enjoy speculative fiction.

Was not sure what to expect from my first book from this author but I am so glad I picked this book up. I’ll start with the writing flow which grabbed me from page one and literally would not let go, the storyline was completely unique and had me completely invested also in the first page. The emotions I experienced while reading this were totally unexpected and there was at least once where I didn’t even realize I had tears running down my face.
The synopsis intrigued me, the cover grabbed me, but the end result was me thinking about this story long after I finished. This author has earned a new fan and I know I’ll be reading this book again more than once in the future. I’ve already recommended to a couple people and truly hope they take the same chance I did because it was awesome!

I really liked that the book was written from the perspective of the dark witch. Lady Isra’s character and the dark world she lives in reminded me of all the fairy tales I used to love reading about as a child. The story was well written and kept my attention. This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Sravenheart and and I’m sure I’ll be checking out her other books.

Trey: European Redemption (Russian Mob Chronicles Book 7) by Shandi Boyes is a dark romance story. Shandi Boyes is not one to shy away from the darker side of things and likes to push the boundaries to give us something raw and twisted. There may be triggers for some as it deals with human trafficking, violence, abuse and more. If you can see past these you will find that whilst it makes you cringe at times it is a great story. Shandi’s writing always captivates and enthrals me as I stepped into the world of mafia’s and the utter despicable darkness in there.

The Walls Between Us: A Borderland Love Story by Kate McGahan is based on a true story. One of love but nearly impossible with the boarder/wall between Mexico and America. It is also one of hardships for those who want to find a better life and one where human trafficking, drug trafficking and more take place. It is an emotional read and some of the characters were not to my liking. There are moments when the story takes us back in times and I sometimes felt a little lost. It is one of those stories that lead to what if’s as it is a real problem in today’s world. 3.5 stars

5 Star Love Song: A friends-to-lovers rock and roll romantic suspense by KG Fletcher is a Romance/ Suspense that once you start reading your not going to able to stop. I’ve read several books by this author and this one tops my favorites list. This is Casey and Sam’s story. Casey is a on tour backup singer on stage and off stage a bit of a party girl. She also love her sister. Sam is an amazing drummer. These two meet and yhey both feel the attraction but what happens when Casey ‘s sister needs her? What does there future hold? I don’t want to give to much away . This is a must read that I highly recommend. I promise you won’t be disappointed. I look forward to reading more from this author

Wow what a story it isn’t all rainbows and unicorns by far it is a raw emotional heartbreaking story. Human trafficking isn’t a pleasant thing to read about but this storyline was phenomenal the emotions injected in this story is pouring of the page’s keeping the story alive and makes you eager to turn the page’s. I enjoyed this story there is some distressing scenes but they are raw and really help you understand what is happening. Brilliant read!

North to Nara is the first Crimson Sash book, a dystopian YA series by Amanda Marin. Marin paints a picture of the Nation, built on loyalty (following the Expulsions which dealt with those who were not loyal) and strict rules and consequences. Neve Hall is in many ways a classic YA dystopian heroine. Confident and independent, she is fascinated by the animals which have long since left the Nation. The more she learns about the secrets that keep the Nation running smoothly, the angrier she gets and the more determined to fight for change. Young activists will relate to her sense of justice and willingness to put herself at risk for what she believes in. Micah Ward is a Sufferer – a fascinating profession that involves him taking on the pain of others so they can go about their lives unhindered. As such, he is empathetic and caring. He is also required to follow a rigid code of conduct which, amongst other things, forbids him from entering into any romantic relationships. The worldbuilding in North to Nara is fantastic, really setting the reader up for the rest of the series. The story is a bit of a rollercoaster as Neve and Micah face danger and challenges to their beliefs and loyalties. I couldn’t put it down – I had to stay up late to find out what happened! And I’ve got the sequel ready so I can get onto it asap. For me, this is a five star book. Really enjoyable story, with a world that highlights flaws and risks in our own societies. Perfect for teens and young adults who are concerned about the environment and social issues.

I love a period piece of any kind but The Slaughter of Leith Hall by Lexie Conyngham , was especially good. Any mystery story is a good mystery but this one really had my mind in a tangle. It seems a little slow at first, and I wasn’t quite sure it was a mystery. Trust me what I perceived as a slow-moving story was the authors skillful craft of laying the foundation for everything that follows. Foundation is key, and it almost slipped my mind once I got into the story and believe me you get in deep. Many moving parts to this story and it was greatly entertaining. The most pleasant part was the many surprises. This is a tale that is well worth your time. I can’t think of enough good things to say about this one without sounding like I am gushing.

It is written in a biography style, but described as Sarah’s soul communicating her voice and feelings to the author. It was written in the early 2000s, but the story takes place in the 1700s. Sarah and her brothers were Puritans kidnapped by Mohawk Indians as children. Her brothers were adopted into Mohawk families, but Sarah was not. She tells her story of her capture and the years following. It is quite the story, starting off first as a stolen child, turned slave. Then falling in love with her captor, and serving as healer to the same tribe that took her from her family. The narration is one of a kind, and very intriguing. I don’t know if its a true story, but it certainly seems like it could be.

I don’t know where this author has been hiding but I loved this book! All the feels. Just the right amount of push and pull. Electric chemistry and a small town romance spin – I was pulled in immediately and loved every detail. Mannersly did a beautiful job crafting this story and I look forward to reading more from this author.

While I really enjoyed the story at times I felt like they were talking about Something I couldn’t figure out (Maybe because this is book 7 and I haven’t read any of the others). Then as the story progressed I just let some of that stuff slide right by. That being said this is about two gritty characters who have been through hell and are not sure if they want to leave it behind since it offers comfort to them. I liked the two main characters equally. Each is strong and have come out the other side knowing their faults and yet becoming stronger. There are times that I really LOVED what Trey would say to K. Made my heart ache and fill with awe at the same time.
The secondary characters were wonderfully easy to like or hate respectively. Each had a place and they served it well. I want to give a shout out to Eight! He was probably my favorite.
Overall I loved the characters and the story. The story flowed well other than a few times and I could really feel what the characters were feeling. It’s a bit dark and I Ioved every second.

The Walls Between Us: A Borderland Love Story is a thought provoking story by Kate McGahan. It is my first read by this writer so I cannot say anything about how it compares to her other writing which might be good as I can look at it at its own rights. It is hard to describe my experience of reading this story and it does not happen a lot. This story makes you think and feel and it also forces you to take a stand, as a human being … it might make some people feel very uncomfortable and it might also inspire some people to change their opinions … The writer is telling the story of the wall and the people whose lives it impacts through two main characters that are in some ways as far from each other as possible while during the telling their ‘telling’ gets tied together in a memorable way. I have to admit though that I struggled a bit with Kate’s writing style and it took me a bit to get ‘into’ it and eventually I ‘disconnected’ my critical nerdy me and simply went with the story which is haunting … so haunting … I also acknowledge that I do not have any real life experience or interaction with deeply devote Mexican women so I decided to simply let the story to take me where the writer wanted me to be taken to … I hope that young people will find their way to this book as it will teach them a lot … about injustice … about discrimination … about kindness … about hope … and the obligation that we all have as humans to take action when we are faced with injustice and discrimination!

The Slaughter of Leith Hall by Lexie Conyngham was a great read! I loved how the setting of this story was in an older time period, it’s so rare to find books like that these days. Since it was in that timeline though, I found the novel to be a little confusing at first, simply because of all the characters and it took a while for them and the background of the story to build up. But overall, this was a very thrilling, enthralling read. This is the first novel I’ve read from this author before, and I was very impressed with it. I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future!

I will start with I absolutely loved this book’s cover. It had all the colors and the eye grabbing graphics to pull me in without even reading a word of the synopsis. Isra Sravenheart is a new author to me so I decided to go in blindly off the basis of the cover. While this book does have a great idea behind it, the villain is our main character and we see the good and bad sides of her so we can make an informed decision on whether to like her or not rather than just knowing she is a villain. I like the idea and the dark fantasy version of it as that is honestly some of the only times I enjoy reading fantasy. This book just unfortunately for me never really took off for me the way I had so hoped it would. I would be very interested in seeing the other novels in the series that are available though. Maybe as we go things get stronger in the pacing of the books? I enjoyed this enough to give it four stars but I do hope that the next few coming up has just a bit more oomph to the books. I want to be whisked away into the dark worlds the author is trying to portray and hope to be soon!

I must say this is one that should not be judged based off the cover and blurb alone. I was much more excited to get my hands on this novel when I saw the review coming in about the sweet and relevant love story that was in this book. I was not even one moment disappointed I dove in either Kate McGahan is a new author to me but was quick to pull me into her writing with great detail and the ability to transport me to the places we see in the story. I felt the emotions pouring off the pages of our characters and it was obvious this was a subject close to the heart of the author.
We meet these two very different people, Mexican and American, both very different backgrounds and both on opposite sides of a wall that stands for more than division. The book follows as they dive into a friendship and discover they are more alike than they ever thought. I was very impressed with the way this book played out and I am anxious to see what else is available from Kate McGahan soon!

I won’t lie, I get excited when I see there is a new Russian Mob Chronicles book from Shadi Boyes. When I found out we were getting Trey’s book it was even sweeter of a deal. I loved him and the tidbits we got in Nikolai’s story so I knew this was gonna be one I was going to adore. I was not for one moment disappointed! I would recommend that you read the other books in the series before diving into this one. You will understand the world a bit better for sure that Trey is a part of.
When Trey meets Kristinia he is immediately drawn to her and consumed really by her. Trey is known for his protective personality and would do anything to protect the ones he loves and now Kristina is apart of that category. She has had one hell of a past six years as she was trafficked in the sex-trafficking trade, something that is an extremely difficult topic to tackle anytime but especially in the world we are currently living. I love how Shandi Boyes doesn’t shy away from the dark sides of this life and keeps things raw and gritty the whole time. I would say if you don’t like or enjoy dark romance maybe keep that in mind before picking this one up. I can’t wait to see what comes next from Boyes!

This was a new author for me and so I really didn’t know what to expect when I sat down with The Abduction of Sarah Tarbell: As Her Soul Remembers. I figured this would be a book that was somewhat haunting and sad and that is what I got plus some. In this we follow Sarah Tarbell as she develops and deals with very difficult situations that most would never even be able to imagine let alone survive. I loved how this was told through her eyes and we saw the deepest and darkest thoughts as much as we saw the hope and fervor to survive and overcome. It was a great escape for a weekend afternoon read and I was impressed with the writing as much as the story line. I will definitely be around for more from Stuart Ledwith and look forward to seeing what else is available from him while I wait for more new.
