This was a fun, fantastical story. It reminded me of an adult version of the Smurfs. I really liked Lillie. She was smart, independent and sarcastic. I appreciated the way that she accepted the Zayeds and didn’t judge them. Her harem of boys were each unique in character and sexy. I loved each differently; Heath’s strength, Brian’s intelligence, Chief’s compassion and Clay’s clumsiness. The book wasn’t long being only 133 pages. The story takes place over two days. There were times when I felt like the story was rushed. I think it would have worked better if the author made the book a little longer. This is a new author for me and I think she did well. It was a fun read. I’ll be looking for part two.

This series is so hot! An elite team of highly qualified bodyguards who happen to be sexy as sin. Alpha males ready to protect their charges and the women they love. Each book focuses on a different couple. In this book we meet Sheldon and Alexis. A chance encounter in a café changes both of their lives. Sheldon saves Alexis from being harassed by a bully. Although Sheldon himself is dominant, he would never hurt or scare a woman. He was in the right place at the right time. After doing some intel, he finds out that the guy is a known human trafficker and murderer. Knowing that the guy will stop at nothing to get to Alexis, Sheldon knows he needs to protect her. Alexis calls to him in ways that he hasn’t felt in a long time. He wants to tame her fiery character and see where this relationship can go. Will they have time to take this to the next level or will she end up losing in this game of life or death?

This was an action packed book filled with danger and suspense. It frustrated me that Alexis kept putting herself in danger by not listening. It kept me on edge through most of the novel. I kept wanting to know what would happen next and I felt like I couldn’t read fast enough. It was an excellent story. You need to read this series!

This was a fantastic ending to an amazing series. You really should start this series from the beginning. It is so worth it! These books are addictive. With so many twists and turns, the author keeps you in suspense throughout. The story is dark and sexy yet full of hope and love. It was bittersweet reading this book. It was incredibly interesting but I didn’t want it to end. I wanted to fly through the book and at the same time savour every page. I enjoyed the journey of experiencing Evie’ sips and downs, her pain and love. I’m so happy with the way things ended. The author surpassed my expectations with this book. Thank you Ms. Dumond!

The cover of this book caught my attention first. It’s beautiful. It has nothing to do with the book but it’s forgivable. It’s breathtaking. I think the title is perfect for the story found within. I read the synopsis and became immediately intrigued. A seance, a convent, ghosts and mentally unbalanced teenagers. Maybe there will be an exorcism? Well there wasn’t an exorcism but I did find a very interesting, well written story filled with secrets, trauma and teenage angst.

There are moments that feel surreal and others that are downright creepy. This is not a horror story though. You must remember that the story takes place in Puerto Rico in 1973. There are situations that families couldn’t deal with so the “problem “ was hidden away in a convent. Hoping God will take care of it. Mental illness and victims of sexual assault needed to be kept hidden.

Paloma is sent to the convent and becomes friends with a group of ragtag misfit girls. She connects with them all differently and doesn’t know if she can trust them. She’s seeing a ghost and hearing things. She feels like she is going crazy but she knows that there are secrets hidden within the walls. People are dying. Can she uncover the truth?

The author has a way of telling the story which constantly keeps you guessing. The complex characters and mystery will have you quickly turning the pages. For me, the only disappointment was the ending. The last couple of chapters felt rushed. Paloma was trying to figure it all out. I turned the page and the book ended. I needed to go back and reread the last chapter because I felt like I had missed something but I didn’t. I feel confused and I don’t know what happened.

An Unexpected Bonding (The Unexpected Trilogy Book 1) by Lilly Rayman

Let’s start off by saying that this is not your usual vampire/ shifter romance. The backstory of this plot was well thought out and original. With the faeries meddling in the mortal realm, the vampires and wolf shifters were created. They have been at war for centuries and the fates have predicted peace once again. How better to achieve that than with unexpected bondings between the species?

The main part of the story takes place in Texas with continual jumps into the past to explain the reason behind modern day events. I want to say that there are two main characters but there are several with their own uniqueness and depth which add to the story. I love the fact that the author added Egyptian mythology to the story. It added something special. It was different than the usual storylines. Although there are some minor editing flaws, the book is well written and interesting.

My only issue with the book is that I found it long. There are in depth explanations and repetitions of those explanations. There are several points of views which led to repeating scenes. I feel like this book could have been a trilogy unto itself. With each book focusing on a separate couple. Livia and Darius in part one, Isia and Cato in part two and Quintessa and Julio in the last part. I’m still looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

This is the fourth book in this tantalizing series. A series filled with action, intrigue and hot male bodyguards. Each book focuses on a separate couple but the story continues through each book. It can be read as a stand-alone but the books are good so it’s worth reading them all. This book centres around Dereck and Layla. Layla is strong and full of attitude but has a heart of gold. She tries her best to help Brianna but has goals and secrets that she must keep hidden. Dereck is assigned to watch Layla and can’t help but be attracted to the fiery beauty. She calls to his dominant side and he has decided that she’ll be his regardless of what she thinks. He knows the attraction is mutual and realizes that she is keeping secrets. Trust must be earned and he plans on earning her trust. He needs to protect her, even from herself.

This book will catch your attention from the get go and keep you interested until the end. Layla was a secondary character in the last book and I really enjoyed getting to know her story in this one. The chemistry was on fire between the two main characters and I was rooting for them from the start. This was a great addition to the series and I’m looking forward to reading the next one.

This is a series about a highly paid escort who is an empath. She heals her customers. I highly suggest that you read the series from the beginning. There is a lot that is going on that you need to know about. Evie heals everyone but who will heal her? In this book, she’s finally realizing that she has been through so much and is near her breaking point. I have always loved Evie. She is strong, caring and wants to take care of everyone. There were a few who wanted to care of her but not in the way that she needed. I’m pleased to see that that she has met her match. I hope that she had the courage to let him in.

The plot thickens and her adoring fan is getting bolder. Danger lurks around every corner for Evie. I went through a slew of emotions in this book. I was happy, heartbroken and nervous. What an ending! Can’t wait to read the next book.

I think the Life is Hell series is amazing. It is filled with drama, romance, danger, magic and supernatural beings. The stories are set in Juniper Lake, a quaint little town which happens to be a hot spot for demons. It all started with a demon bedding a vacation to it becoming a home to several. Each story focuses on a separate couple so you can read them as stand-alones but the series is too good not to read them all.

This book focuses on Jaru and Lark. An imp and a pixie; seems unlikely but it works. They started off as friends and steadily grew closer. They reached the tipping point in this story. I wasn’t too sure about them because both are very childlike. With this situation, it clicks and the chemistry is there. The author adds some twists which will surprise you. This wasn’t my favourite book in the series because both Jaru and Lark are very insecure and needy. I was happy to see moments of strength from both of them which raised my opinion of them. The story is well written and will keep you guessing. It’s a good addition to the series. Looking forward to the next one.

This is the first book that I have read by this author. It was good. It captured my attention from the start. Emma and her Aunt mo Ed a lot and now end up in West Lakes for her new job. It means once again Emma is the new kid in school. Thankfully this is her senior year. She managed to quickly become friends with Zach and his group. Falling head over heels for him, she didn’t expect to have a boyfriend so soon. It feels like it was meant to be.

Zach quickly realizes that Emma is his fated mate. Is it just coincidence that Danny and Jacob found their mates as well? The vampires are closing in and Zach’s pack has to kill the one who murdered his mother. Secrets are unearthed that turn Emma and Zach’s life upside down.

The characters are likeable and the story is well written. The author keeps you guessing and has you wanting to know more. This is a good start to this series. I have to warn you though that it does end on a cliffhanger.

Oh My Goodness! I couldn’t put this book down. I read way past my bedtime and was exhausted at work the next day but it was worth it. I do need to warn you that this book is definitely for 18+ readers and there are many triggers fir those that may be sensitive. Warnings aside, my heart broke for Tillie. Only 18 and she’s been through so much already. She’s been living in hell lucky that she’s still alive. Barely making it out, she ran as fast as she can. Hoping they won’t find her but knowing they will never stop looking. Tillie ends up in a place she never dreamed she would be. As the saying goes, “out of the pan into the fire”. Looks can be deceiving and she ends up in a similar situation. She’s determined to start a new life and not let anyone push her around this time.

The characters are well rounded and the story is well written. There is action, danger and sexy men. What more could you ask for? The story ends on a cliffhanger which sucks. Now I’m waiting anxiously to read the next part.

Being one of the few single guys left, he knows the drill. He always covers up on his one night stands. Accidents happen but he realizes this a little too late. The timing couldn’t be worse. He finally meets his other half but he’ll become a father with another. Can their relationship survive this giant hurdle? If that wasn’t bad enough, he has to deal with a stalker as well. Who in their right mind would stalk him of all people?

This is another exciting installment in this series. It’s a story filled with danger, mystery and sexy bikers. This book will hold your attention until the very end. I highly recommend reading this book.

It is filled with desire, danger and intrigue. The author manages to pull you in until you are engrossed in the story. I was wrapped in Bryanna’s plight, wondering where she would end up. She is young and innocent. A virgin tricked yet determined to save her family. Damian is an elite bodyguard hired to retrieve and protect her. This job turned out to be anything but routine. He expected to find someone sweet and found instead an incredibly sexy submissive that calls to his dominant nature. The job became personal when the need to claim and protect her took over. The chemistry between the two will set your book on fire. You’ll definitely enjoy getting burned.

If you like books about politics and espionage then this is the book for you. Luke Raven heads a team called the Raven Group. Luke’s mission in Istanbul this time is on a more personal level. As luck would have it, Luke’s team seems to be at the wrong place at the right time. Something big is happening in Istanbul and they must figure it out before there are too many casualties. The consequences of certain actions that Luke has taken may change his life. This series just keeps getting better with each addition. The stories are filled with action and danger to keep you revitted to your seat. The author’s attention to details will have you understand and make you feel as if you are a part of the spy world. There are a couple of storylines in this book which the author has woven together perfectly. This is a definite must read.

This series is quite the roller coaster ride. Each book is hot but the author turned up the heat in this story. It will definitely leave you panting for more. After reading some scenes, all I could think was “wow, she did it again”. These books are extremely, sexually naughty but they do have a storyline as well, it’s not only sex. This book introduces two new characters, Calvin and Paisley, who happens to be a crossover from her Eastern Shores Swingers series. They are looking for some last bit of excitement before their baby arrives but their adventure turns dangerously wrong. Can their love survive the lies and deception?

I thought it was very cool that she mixed characters from her other novels in this one. It makes it seem as if they all live in the same world. We also get to see some returning characters which is always fun. I love the characters in these books and the stories are so much fun to read. Well done Ms. Alexander!

This is a charming friends to lovers story. I found the book to be quite entertaining. The romance between Alex and Penny was believable with just the right amounts of attraction and nervousness. The comedy relief was enjoyable. Alex is a true city boy who’s never been in the woods. Being an author, he needs to do research for his next book. Luke and Penny decide to drag him camping in the wilderness for ten days. What ensues is quite hilarious. Aside from Alex and Penny falling in love, Luke had to come to terms with his feelings about the situation; seeing as he is best friends with both of them.

The book is informative pertaining to surviving in the wild. I appreciated that because I learned a lot. It is also written from Alex’s perspective which I enjoyed. It is not often that you will find a romance novel written from the male’s viewpoint. It showed how insecure men feel as well. I found it quite refreshing. This is a really good book that I think you will enjoy.

This is a quick novella that can be read while having lunch. Tuck wants his 8 second ride of fame to win the belt buckle. He wants to make his family proud. Tuck is late for work and he’ll probably be stuck with the boss’s daughter again. It wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t a spoiled brat. He could think of a lot of things he would like to do with her. Jesse has been in love with Tuck since she first laid eyes on him. She needs to know if he is worth it. So she’s putting him to the test. The chemistry is there but can he prove himself?

I kind of felt like I was watching an episode of Yellowstone. I had no patience for Jesse and found that she had a weird way of showing that she loved Tuck. That being said, the book was well written. If you like cowboys, you’ll enjoy this story.

This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I love fairytales and I think that the author did a good job with this one. There is magic, a curse, the beast and a happily ever after. This is where the similarities end. In this story, the father gambles for a rose and loses his three daughters. The sisters go to Thorn Hill Manor on their own terms and decide to help the beast in their own way. Lily becomes the housekeeper to clean and refresh the house, Rose decides to revive the gardens as this is her strength and Poppy being the youngest becomes his secretary. The author adds some twists to keep it interesting. The characters are kind and compassionate. My favourite had to be Poppy. She is a headstrong fourteen year old with a will of her own. The story is charming and enjoyable. You won’t be disappointed.

I don’t usually like books about the zombie apocalypse but seeing as this was a short story, I took the plunge. I’m just fifteen pages, the author managed to write a story that was detailed and original. It is creepy and macabre. The story shows the desperation of today’s dating scene using zombies as a metaphor. It was clever and well written. The main character wants to overcome her loneliness by trying to find “ the one”. Yet after several failed attempts and one close call with the undead, she deems it just not worth it. Ending the story with a chance to expand was a good choice by the author. This is a quick read that can be read over a cup of coffee.

This is a fun, ghostly romance. It is the third installment in this series and probably my favourite. Ms. Pulkinen knows how to pull in her readers with lovable characters and a story that is intriguing. This book has some added mystery and danger. Erica has always been psychic. She’s hidden her talent her whole life. She inherits a theatre that has a few ghosts attached to it. She recently bumped into her old high school friend Gage Dawson and realized that he grew into a very handsome man. Gage has always been in love with Erica but never had the guts to tell her. Meeting her again has given him a second chance. Unfortunately he has never had any luck with girls and is nervous that it won’t work out. Since Gage has already investigated the theatre before, he knows about the ghosts that live there. Yet stranger things are starting to occur with Erica and Gage is worried. An obvious lack of communication between the two puts Erica in harm’s way. They will need to work together to stay alive.

I enjoyed the fact that Gage got his own book. He has always been a secondary character in this series and I think he deserved his own story. With Erica and Gage’s back story, it made their romance even more meaningful. I loved the fact that Gage was able to see past her scars and love her for her. This book was a great addition to this series.

This is the first book that I have read from this author and I was impressed. The amount of raw emotion in the story was astounding. The characters and their problems were relatable which made it easier to connect with them. This is not your usual love triangle. Ellie loves them both but differently. Jason has been her best friend since childhood and his brother Drew is who she’s in love with. The three have been to hell and back which has put a strain on their relationship especially between the brothers. The brothers’ band, Razes Hell, rise to fame has only added pressure. Being best friends with rock stars isn’t easy particularly when you are the glue that holds them together. When past issues are brought into the light publicly, feelings of resentment resurface. Things spiral out of control. Can Ellie mend the heartache between the brothers while her own life is in turmoil?

This book was well written. There was tension, secrets and betrayals. My only issue with the story was I found there was too much drama. I needed to step back every so often and take a break. Regardless, the story was very good and I will be looking for more books from this author.

Trent is a high powered lawyer who inherits a house from his uncle. He was quite surprised because he was never close to him and his uncle was kind of crazy. After visiting the place, he decided to put it up for sale. It looked and felt like a real haunted house. Wanting a quick sale, he called the best real estate agent in town. Tina was a little surprised that Trent called her. She hadn’t spoken to him since she dumped him. She left him hanging not because she didn’t like him but because she liked him too much. Putting her feelings aside, she decided to remain professional. Inexplicably they both feel a connection to the house but there is something evil that lurks within. Can they both survive to have their happily ever after?

This is the second book in the series. It is Trent and Tina’s story whom we met in the first book. Although this is part two, it can be read as a stand-alone. The book is full of love and danger. The story is well written and the characters bring it to life. This is a fun and enjoyable read. I’m looking forward to part three.

Love at First Haunt is the first installment in her Haunted Ever After series. Logan is an empath but he doesn’t know. All his life he knew that he could read people’s emotions and now , on top of that, he has a ghost in his house. Everything is driving him to the point of insanity. He meets Alison and his life changes. She teaches him how to block his empath abilities and shows him what live really is. He falls fast and hard for her. One tiny problem, she’s a psychic who’s afraid of ghosts. How can they have their happily ever after when she would have to face her fears? Facing her fears means putting her life at risk.

I enjoy reading Ms. Pulkinen’s books because they are light romantic comedies with a paranormal twist. I noticed with series, she writes on a more serious note. Although there isn’t as much comedy as her other books, it is still filled with romance, wonderful characters and this time, mystery and danger. While the romance blossoms fairly quickly, the suspense has a slow build up that will leave you breathless. This is a great book and a fantastic start to her new series. I am looking forward to book two.

Magic runs rampant in the land of Atzlan del Norte. Evil resides there and has taken hold of the land and people for decades. Evil is smart, it hides in plain sight. The people of Atzlan are very religious. When you follow religion so piously sometimes you are blind to what’s directly under your nose. Gabriel de LaTierra has grown to become a psychiatric healer. He loves helping the children of the orphanage. Mother Juan de la Cruz, Superior of the Nunnery and the Orphanage is his mother. It seems they are a tag team made in heaven. She heals their physical needs and Gabriel heals them mentally. Children start disappearing without reason and Gabriel decides he will get to the bottom of it. He is blinded by his religious beliefs and his love for his mother. Will the love and guidance from his wife help Gabriel open his eyes and see the truth or will he see all he cares about perish horribly in front of him?

Mr. DeBlassie once again wrote a vividly detailed story about the dark side of religion. The story is twisted and complex. Between the nuns capabilities to hurt you just with their thoughts and Gabriel and his wife’s visions, the story was constantly jumping back and forth. I felt like I was bad tripping, not knowing the difference between reality and the visions. I had to constantly reread to figure out what was going on. The blurred lines made it extremely frustrating. It is quite possible that I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to read a book like this. Maybe if I had read it at a different time, I would have enjoyed it more.

This is the third installment in this series and probably my favorite so far. It can be read as a stand-alone but the series is so good, you should read them all. Each book keeps getting better. We’ve met Tievel in the previous books and he was always an arse. I’m happy to see that there is more to him than just attitude. This story revolves around him and Oren. Oren really evolves quite a bit as well. By the end of the book, it was good to see how much confidence he gained.

The story is well written and there is enough action to keep you interested. I love the characters and enjoy reading about their escapades. The author does an excellent job of taking things from the first two books, which you think are unimportant, and tying them into this story. I have followed this author from her first book and her writing keeps getting better. Who would have thought that a demon and a demon hunter could fall in love?

Black Dog Rising by Kat Caulberg

Black Dog Rising is a dark, romantic fantasy. Emma is in rural England fleeing her ex and ends up in a town called Ninestone Downs. Not everything is as it seems; magic is very much alive in this quaint town. She ends up at the Black Shuck Inn where she meets Toby Deering. The chemistry between them is undeniable but Toby carries some heavy secrets. Living with a four hundred year old curse, he tries to avoid Emma, if only to protect her. It seems their fates are intertwined. As much as he puts her in danger, he’s the only one that can protect her.

The book is well written and the author does a wonderful job of integrating Fae lore and English Shuck folklore into the story. The characters are well rounded and I love the way Toby uses older terminology in his speech patterns. There is plenty of mystery and danger to keep you interested in this story. The only thing that frustrated me was the fact that it took Emma so long to learn exactly what was going on. It’s the first book that I have read from this author and I enjoyed it, I believe you will too.

Stone of Destiny (Juniper Samoni Trilogy Book 1) by Nadine Travers – Review by Anna Hirsch

Stone of Destiny (Juniper Samoni Trilogy Book 1) by Nadine Travers
4 Stars

This is an action packed fantasy novel filled with adventure, danger and some mystery. Juniper is a witch warrior who has some extra special powers. Magical relics call to her and this time she needs to retrieve the Stone of Destiny. If it falls into the wrong hands, the fallout could be devastating. She’s not the only one that wants it, she just needs to get there first.

I found the story to be quite original. With the witch warriors and the magical relics, it almost felt like an epic adventure. There was an underlying sense of foreboding. The world building was fantastic. The author has a vivid imagination. In this book there is clearly the “good “ guys and the “bad” guys but I believe that as the series progresses, these lines will get blurred. The author left enough crumbs in this novel which will have you wanting to pick up the pieces in the next.

This is a retelling of the classic fairytale of Cinderella. It is a historical romance which remains true to the era it was about. The story as a whole had a Jane Austin feel to it. It was beautifully written. Although short, the characters were well rounded and had depth to them. You feel the unfairness of Melinda’s situation and will jump forward joy when it’s her time to shine. I loved the addition of the Fae element which gave the story a supernatural twist. If you are looking fir a quick read with a happily ever after then I highly recommend this book.

Flipping the Bird: A Paranormal Chick Lit Novel (Shift Creek Book 1)
By Carrie Pulkinen
4 Stars

This is a lighthearted, funny tale about a crow shifter trying to save her town. The town of Shift Creek is a mixture of shifters and humans. The creek that runs through it was blessed with healing qualities for all shifters. Unfortunately, the spell is tied to a family of warlocks, the Rainecourts. Thirty years ago, after the death of his wife, Martin left the town with his two sons. Slowly but surely, the magic has been dwindling and now it’s at a critical level. Alice is trying her best to find a solution but it seems they really need a Rainecourt. When someone moves into the Rainecourt House, Alice’s hopes get raised once again only to be dashed when she finds out his name is Donovan Drake. There is more to Donovan than he is letting on, he has his secrets to protect. Read the book to find out what they are.

I absolutely love Carrie Pulkinen. Her books are interesting and funny. There is always romance with a supernatural twist. The story is quirky and interesting. The characters are likeable and relatable. The addition of Marty the farting mongoose had me in stitches. I believe that this is a great start to this series.

Isle of Wings by E.A. Burnett – Review by Anna Hirsch

Isle of Wings: A Silverglen Companion NovelIsle of Wings: A Silverglen Companion Novel by E.A. Burnett

Isle of Wings by E.A. Burnett

The Isle of wings is a YA fantasy novel filled with mystery, magic and intrigue. The islands’ Rain Mage died and the island has been in a drought for the past year. Ever since the death of her family, Roana’s life has been difficult. Alone, with no friends, to take care of her grandmother. All she dreams about is escaping the island and restarting her life elsewhere. Scraping some money together, she attempts to smuggle her way off the island on a boat. Unfortunately she gets caught causing drastic changes in her life. For better or worse, depends on your view. Not everything is as it seems on the island.

I think the story and the characters were well developed. The world building was detailed enough that I could picture what the island looked like. I enjoyed how the relationship between Roana and Iniko progressed. My only issue with this book was that I found it hard to get into. It was slow to start. I’m glad that I stuck with it though. Once it picked up, I didn’t want to put it down.
