This was a great read! Although I’m an adult, I enjoyed how this book captured the essence of a young reader. As a mother, I’m always looking for children’s books that are written in a realistic child voice. This book does just that. It’s a great read to share with the younger readers in your life!

“Because no matter what happens in our lives, we’re guaranteed opportunities to understand what we’re made of.” This is a line from the foreword written by founder of Brave Healer Productions and Brave Kids Books, Laura Di France, and I absolutely love it. It is so simple a sentence yet so profound!
This book is much like that sentence as the Short Stories in it are small tales that pack a big punch of bravery, life lessons, and just great writing. This may be a children’s book, but it truly touched my heart while reading it and I can’t wait to share it with my family as I’m sure it will become a new favorite for them as well.

What is bravery? It can show up in many different forms in many different lives and this book shows 24 great examples of all different types. There are 24 short stories all with amazing characters who all in some way experience something that helps them find their bravery.

I really enjoyed Chapter 10 Amaleigha Tames a Bully by Janice Pratt where the class learns productive ways to deal with a bully. It was a nice touch that Amaleigha knew she could trust her parents enough to talk to them about the problem as well. This definitely gives kids a great example of what can happen if you encourage each other instead of fighting back and causing more ill will.

Another one of my favorite stories is Chapter 16 The Magic Inside (Uncovering The Superhero Within) by Lorie Weed. In it, Alan, though scared, faces his fears and gets past the sick feeling his fears are causing in order to help another living creature, which is a truly heroic act. Growing up, I often made myself sick with worrying and being afraid, so I loved seeing how this boy who had so much to fear was able to overcome it and to see himself as a hero through another’s eyes. New perspectives often work wonders and I think it’s important for our kids to be able to learn to look at themselves this way as well.

Do yourself a favor and get this book! Kids can learn a lot from the stories inside and adults will enjoy the heartwarming tales. I just wish I’d had this when I was younger as I think it would’ve helped me with my anxiety and to find my bravery back then.

This is collection of short stories which contain inspirational words, important messages and tip and tricks for how to be brave in a range of different situations. I talks about emotions, both good and bad, the important of noticing and feeling them and how this can help someone to be brave and face their challenges head on, no matter where or what they are.

This collection is inspiring for all ages and although it is written for kids, adults can take inspiration and experience from it too, a lovely book which is suitable for anyone and everyone which I would highly recommend.

This book of short stories is a winner for me. This is a book for children but absolutely can be enjoyed by adults just as much! Each little story is a vibrant lesson about what it means to be brave. This would be a wonderful tool for parents or guardians to read along with their little and create a dialogue around each story and its message. This book includes great storytelling, and at the same time, keeps the stories short enough to keep hold of little attention spans. I definitely recommend this book of stories for any child or even any adult. The messages are universal and span the ages. Five enthusiastic stars.

People Safari by Feather Chelle – Review by Dr. Anya Schultz

People SafariPeople Safari by Feather Chelle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

People Safari was a cute book about a deer who wanted to adventure outside the forest. Ranger Marco, a raccoon, is about to take them on this journey, but the deer family is a little weary. Fawn, the young deer, is very excited to learn about his outside world and is amazed by many of the things learned. The fawn learns about neighborhoods, people, and what people do all according to the raccoon which is funny. However, they get spooked when they make their way into a garden and Fawn gets a little lost in the city. Ranger Marco finds the fawn quickly and because she was scared she quickly wants to find her parents and go back to the forest. When Ranger Marco asked if they were ready to explore more, the deer family wouldn’t have it. This was a cute book. I liked all the little thoughts about what they think people do in accordance with getting on a bus for school, walking their pets, and even how pooping works. The fact that the deer thought the human world was crazy was also funny because, well, it is!! I found the illustrations really cute too!

Brave kids is a collection of short stories by different authors, some doctors-likely psychiatrists. They each focus on a difficult issue that children may face, sometimes from the perspective of an animal. They may show how a squirrel deals with bullying. Or how a horse may address being orphaned. Or how a child can o10vercome the fear of sleeping alone for the first time. I liked the collection, and think it could be a good book for a teacher or parent to have on hand. However, I think it would be better to have pictures and have the look if a true children’s book. It would hold the interest more of the little ones. I also think it should be divided into topics, as there were multiple stories that addressed the same topics. These stories are similar to fables, in that they are meant to teach us a lesson or help us navigate through a problem. Most seemed geared toward 5 to 10 year olds, but a few seemed a bit more mature content. I read a couple to my seven year old, but did not read him the whole collection.

Today, at my scouts meeting, I had a long talk with a Scout about bravery. We talked about how we can still feel scared and yet still be brave. I immediately thought of this book and we talked about all types of forms of bravery. It was definitely a core moment for me and I loved hearing it all from an amazing 11 year old.

I love finding books that I can share with my children, and this book did not disappoint. I found myself sharing snippets of the stories with other kids in my family and now in Scout group. My daughter and I love reading together before bed and we tried to relish this book as much as possible. I know we will revisit it again.

This beautiful book (the stories and the illustrations) offers a series of short stories dealing with big emotions and situations including tragic losses, facing fears, having confidence, meeting those who look, speak or have customs different than you, dealing with neurodivergency, those with special needs, and more. It’s a beautiful way to teach courage, acceptance, coping mechanisms and more.

There were a lot of inspiring stories and good conversations with my kids about what certain story aspects may mean and a lot of wheels turning in little heads. This is a beautiful way to spend some time together and get some important topics out in the open and appropriate either for independent readers or as an opportunity for sharing these beautiful stories together with your kids.

This is a great collection of short stories for kids. My girls (ages 9 and 10) liked many of these stories, and I cried reading some of them. Each short story takes on a situation in which children may realistically face. For instance, some of them handle the loss of a loved one, or bullying and other situations. I would highly recommend this book for parents to read, and share stories as they may be helpful to children, but also may handle situations that aren’t necessarily “easy reading” for young children, unless the situation arises that may be helped by one of these stories.

This is a collection of short stories meant to empower and embolden youngsters. This book is great for self-readers (ages 7+) or for an adult to read to a smaller child. There are stories of loss, bravery, bullying, confidence, and more. The stories sometimes involve animals as the characters but mostly use humans in the story-telling. Children will be able to relate to many of the situations included, as well as the advice given by an elder to help them overcome the issue at hand.

These stories are relatively short, most being only 3-4 pages long. They would make great night-time stories or even as a short storytime read.

Brave Kids: Short Stories to Inspire Future World Changers by Janice Pratt

Brave Kids is a Anthology of twenty-four short stories by various authors from around the world. I loved everything about this collection and the powerful message that comes with each story. This s is intended for readers ages 6-12 years old. I would say children as well as adults can take away something from this collection. We learn different ways to be brave, how to not give up on our dreams, go after what you want. We learn different things to deal with different sensory situations ,to be kind and how courage can help overcome diversity. I really enjoyed Amaleigha Tames a Bully: Kindness can change a hard heart by Janice Pratt. This story shows bravery by being herself and asking for help when you need it and standing up to the meany bully. My son is five and we are working on different ways to express our emtions, how to use our words to ask for things and how to deal with different sensory situations. He asked questions about why each of the kids showed bravery and courage to face different things. I love that he loves to read and he was sad for some of the kids in some of the stories.I highly recommend reading this collection and who knows you might find a few new authors.

A very fine book touching on few sensitive topics to children, teens and adults alike, Brave Kids is a collection of six short stories which delves deep into emotional aspects behind loss, emotional turbulence and bullying. These are the issues which we adults suffer as well and we do know that emotional balance can only be achieved when we are brave enough to face these issues internally.

Bravery does not mean being a super hero , bravery means not being afraid of the dark, bravery means helping others in their times of need, bravery means treating nature with respect.
This is a very meaningful book and I would recommend my children also to read . Loved every bit of it.

This book is fantastic and is one that I will be reading aloud to my class at the beginning of the school year. Each story focuses on a child who is being brave by overcoming obstacles. It particularly focuses on navigating and overcoming feelings and challenges. Through these stories the reader can see how each child became resilient. This is such an important message that all children need to hear and see reinforced. I feel that these stories are so important and should definitely be read aloud to all children. This is a wonderful collection of children’s stories that are short enough for most attention-spans (wiggly worms) and long enough to fit in some good life lessons. The illustrations help draw everyone in and are adored throughout this book. I enjoyed reading this entire collection with my two kids who are 7 and 11. I feel like there were some great conversation starters in each chapter, and we paused to talk about what they would do in each situation or what the underlying issues could be.

Two stories really stood out for me were “Catch Your Thoughts Before They Ruin Your Day” by Samantha Ena Minichiello and “Amaleigha Tames a Bully: Kindness Can Change a Hard Heart” by: Janice Pratt.

Catch Your Thoughts Before They Ruin Your Day is incredibly relatable to me even now because even adults have emotionally turbulent times, and some of us weren’t taught the best coping mechanisms. My kids especially enjoyed it because they have recently been learning about fixed mindset vs growth mindset, so it was really cool timing for this to come into our lives.

Amaleigha Tames a Bully is truly a work of art. Unfortunately, bullies seem to be in every grade at every school, but what happens if we dedicate time to uncovering the root of it all? I loved this because it’s easy to shrug off a bully as a mean person that you should just ignore, but when you have a bad day, week, or month, don’t you just really want to feel needed and loved? This sparked the longest and most compassionate conversation with my kiddos! I highly recommend picking this up for the classroom or your family. There is absolutely something in this collection for everyone!

Brave Kids: Short Stories to Inspire Our Future World-ChangersBrave Kids: Short Stories to Inspire Our Future World-Changers by K.J. Kaschula
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Brave Kids is a collection of short stories written by a variety of authors. Each short story is on a different topic and discusses things such as the loss of a loved one, being afraid of the dark, bullying, and other situations where a child may feel vulnerable and afraid. Being brave is not about being a superhero, or having super powers, it is about believing in yourself and being kind. Being brave is asking for help when you need it. Being brave is about helping others be better. Being brave is about treating nature and Mother Earth with respect. Each one of the stories are designed to inspire youth and adults to create a better world for all of us, for Earth, and for animals.

This book was truly inspirational and is a good reminder for children, youth, teens, and adults of all ages. Sometimes we have a moment in life that makes us scared, and we need a gentle reminder that true bravery comes from within. Sometimes those things require us to dig down deep and believe in ourselves. Sometimes we lose someone we love, and the sadness weighs us down. Sometimes we cannot do things on our own and it is okay to ask for help from a friend or family member. Sometimes we need a reminder to not take nature and Earth for granted and we need to take care of the planet we live on.

I enjoyed all of the stories in this book but if I had to pick a favorite it would be One Rock at a Time. It is about how to be brave after suffering the loss of a loved one. This one hit home for me after the recent loss of my father. We were close and losing him has weighed me down with grief and anger. My grief was weighing me down like an imaginary backpack full of rocks. Thank you for including this short story, it has helped me release some of the grief and move forward. I highly recommend this book for all ages! A great collection to keep on hand and read when feeling like you are not quite brave enough.

One Rock At a Time: Coping With the Loss of Ruby By: Kelly Daugherty
A great little story about love, grief, and coping and dealing with loss. How talking about it can really help and you don’t have to bottle it up. The memory box idea is wonderful.

Amaleigha Tames a Bully: Kindness Can Change a Hard Heart By: Janice Pratt
I have loved little Amaleigha since meeting her in ‘Amaleigha and the Big Idea’ and ‘Amaleigha Loves a Good Story. She might only be six, but she has a wise head on her young shoulders. She’s not only helpful but is also a great little problem solver. Here, Amaleigha and her classmates find a way to dela with a bully: “Kill them with kindness”. Does their strategy work. You really should read this sweet little story for yourself to find out whether their plan works. Definitely one of my favourites from the collection.

I Can Feel and I Can Heal: A Young Girl’s Journey to the Heart By: Julie Funkhouser
Marie has just discovered that her father has passed away- and she isn’t coping well with the news. But then a simple feather changes everything. A moving story about dealing with the death of a parent. Coping with grief and overwhelming emotions. And finding healing.

Brooklyn’s Journey to Finding Inner Peace: How to Awaken Your Magical Chakras
By: Dr. Jennifer Browne
A new age spiritual approach to finding inner peace through knowing your chakra points and what each one is linked to. Then using that knowledge to focus your energy and channel healing, as well as to bring tranquility into your life.

Chandria Chats With Mr. Moon By: Pamela Boehme
Chandria teaches how voicing our concerns can help us see them in a new light. Voicing our troubles gives us control. This cute tale also teaches that we are in control of designing our life.

Blaze Outside the Box By: Lacey Ayon
Sometimes we label ourselves and put ourselves inside a box in an effort to fit in and be accepted. But this story teaches us that everyone is unique and to embrace our differences and get out of ‘the box’ we’ve been in. Be true to ourselves by accepting our differences and seeing them as what makes us unique. A lovely little story.

The Body’s Secret Superpower By: Mair Lemus
A magical little story with lessons from mother earth when Ana has trouble fitting in at her new school. She is sad and it is affecting every aspect of her life. A walk in the forest changes things and gives her a new perspective. Another of my favourites from this collection.

The Magic Inside: Uncovering the Superhero Within By: Lorie Weed
A great little tale that follows Alan on an adventure when he has to take a bus trip. It teaches coping skills and how everyone has a superhero within them. Sweet and fun.

Caroline Can Do Hard Things: Courage for the Tough Times By: Meredith Speir
Caroline’s world is a bit off-kilter since her parents recent divorce. The first day of school arrives and her friends won’t be in the same class. She is worried about how it will go. Plus, she’s missing her dad and having him there like normal. Her mother showers her with extra love, and Caroline’s first day of third grade, although stressful, turns out to be quite fun. Through the story we are taught that feelings are ok and normal- and shows that we CAN do hard things. An adorable little story that makes it to my favourites list.

Operation Mind-Shift, Commence!!: Kole’s Hero’s Journey Into the Unknown
By: Eddie BenAbraham
An enjoyable story that follows Kole as he faces the unknown and deals with fear. Especially the fear of making a presentation in front of the whole class. How does he cope? What happens when it comes time to make his talk? You really should read all the interesting developments for yourself- it is definitely worth the read.

Together they Build, Reflect, and Belong By: Tom Dahlborg
Aaron has a great friend in Asa- we could all do with such a caring friend. This story is cute, and inspiring. All about loving ourselves just the way we are. It made it to my favourites list, too.

Chan is Called to the Principal’s Office: A Change of Heart Can Help By: Susan Ernst
“You see, you can change how you feel about things simply by thinking about them differently. By having a change of heart!”
When Chan is called to the principal’s office his mind goes wild, expecting the worst. The story shows that we can change how something affects us, or stresses us, just by changing the way we see the situation. Great strategy to learn.

Dear Miss Priscilla: I Dance In Your Name By: Manuela Welton Garavito
A heartwarming little story full of wonderful memories. Teaching healing through movement/dance. And how you can find healing, courage, and your ‘voice’ through any art form – such as writing, singing, painting, or dancing. In this case it was dance. This sweet story was full of emotion and inspiration.

The Monkey Brain Survival Guide: How to Cope With Sensory Overload
By: Heidi MacAlpine
Love learning about the Lazy Eight Survival Tool. A handy strategy to have, especially in these challenging times.

Jesse’s Stage Fright: How to Find Your Voice By Ditching Perfection
By: Justin Krull, PT
Jesse learns to overcome stage fright by changing the way he ‘self-talked’. This story teaches you to find your inner light and deal with negative ‘self-talk’. We could all do with these strategies, especially in this modern world where ‘perfect’ seems to be expected. Our thought process can change everything.

Kiddo and Kidette: to Be or Not To Be Brave – A Play By: Corinne Puget
A cute play about the different ways to be brave. And a great, fun way to finish off this collection.

As you can see, there is plenty here to inspire- as well as a few illustrations to help build interest …. so, if your future world-changer could do with some inspiring and helpful strategies, then this is definitely a book you will want to have on your bookshelf.
Happy Reading…

Brave Kids: Short Stories to Inspire Future World Changers by Janice Pratt – Review by Jennifer Crain

Brave Kids: Short Stories to Inspire Our Future World-ChangersBrave Kids: Short Stories to Inspire Our Future World-Changers by K.J. Kaschula
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A great collection of stories designed to teach children lessons about social and personal issues they may be experiencing. I enjoyed the mix between human characters and animal characters (orphaned horses, squirrels, lions) refreshing. My favorite story was “Catch Your Thoughts Before They Ruin Your Day,” because that story even transcended to me as a an adult, yet still connects with kids, about having a positive outlook and growth mindset. Overall, the stories were stories and not just preaching a lesson, which I have seen in other anthologies.

As a side note, I found “Tonight is the Night” story about bedtime fears to not fit in with the age range/topics covered in the rest of the stories- which I could see 6-9 year olds relating to.
