The Lightning Horse (Empire at Twilight Book 1) by N.L. Holmes – Review by Carly Vogler

The Lightning Horse (Empire at Twilight, #1)The Lightning Horse by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Lightning Horse by N.L Holmes is the first book in the Empire at Twilight Series. I am not one who normally reads historical fiction, but I will forever read anything N. L Holmes writes! The research it must have taken to have a book be so realistic and reflective of a time period is unimaginable.

When a chariot accident kills a young Hittite’s father, he won’t rest until the people responsible are found. Unfortunately, it doesn’t go as planned and we start down a rabbit hole of twists and turns, uncovering more as we go along.

An Unexpected Bonding (The Unexpected Trilogy Book 1) by Lilly Rayman – Review by Carly Vogler

An Unexpected BondingAn Unexpected Bonding by Lilly Rayman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An Unexpected Bonding by Lilly Rayman is the first book in The Unexpected Trilogy. You have to pay attention during this story, as it is written from different points of view and different points of time. That being said, it is amazing. When I read the synopsis, I knew I had to have it! It is not action packed constantly, and I feel as though this helps the reader get a better feel for the characters and the shifts in time and POV.

Do not base your idea of this book off Twilight, as this story is vastly different and I think people who hated Twilight will fall in love with this story.

Sons of SindicatoSons of Sindicato by Sonya Jesus & Cam Johns
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sons of Sindicato by Sonya Jesus and Cam Johns is what I would consider a dark romance.

Seth and Braelynn are doomed from the start. An attorney and a crime lord just aren’t meant to be, right? With the law coming at her, and the mafia less than happy about the relationship, what can Braelynn do? Is she safe anywhere?

Suspense, mystery and love can all be found in this novella. I can’t wait to read more!

Bake BelieveBake Believe by Cori Cooper
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bake Believe by Cori Cooper is an adorably fun story. As someone who spends a great deal of time around middle schoolers, I can tell you she portrays them perfectly!

Cat is you average middle schooler; too concerned with what everyone else thinks. No one in Cat’s family bakes, so when she finds herself in a culinary class, she is less than impressed. Turns out, Cat is a great baker, but something unusual happens when she bakes.

This was a fun young adult story that will have you giggling like a school girl.

The Earl’s Scandalous Wager, by Wareeze Woodson, is a historical romance you won’t soon forget. When Emily is used as a wager in a bet, she can’t believe the men would follow through and allow it. It becomes all too real when Emily’s stepbrother loses the bet and she is now the property of the Earl of Lenbridge.

What is in Emily’s future? Will she be traded again? Will she be forced to marry this man. Worse yet, will she be his mistress? I love the way this story played out and can’t wait to delve into more stories by Wareeze.

Blue Summer by Everly Taylor is part one of what I can only hope to be a long series! Sometimes we are told our whole lives to fear a type of people, and we just follow along because that is all we know.

Lillie was always told the Zayed were to be feared. After a horrific incident, the Zayed were the ones who helped her. Now in more trouble, they must all work together to save Lillie and the Zayed community.

This story had me laughing just by the first few paragraphs. A must read!

Flowers in December AUDIO BOOK by Jane Suen – Review by Carly Vogler

Flowers in December by Jane Suen is a short listen audiobook. We follow Connor Norton as he visits his hometown to deal with his mothers passing. Full of regret, Connor reflects on the last 20 years in which he has barely visited. Realizing he isn’t getting any younger, can Connor overcome his shortcomings and move on to make more of what he has left?

This was a great quick listen. I would have liked to have seen more development in the story line, and perhaps more of a look into Connor’s life later on.

This is a collection of different stories from various authors. I absolutely loved the quick read tales in this collection. Though I would have loved to have had longer versions of some of them, they were great short stories that left no stone unturned and gave the reader enough detail to picture the scenes. A great “mini-escape” if you will.

Everything, Somewhere by David Kummer is a coming of age story that follows three friends on their journey from high school to adulthood. I believe young adults will easily relate to the struggles the characters face, and be hooked before the first chapter is over. Mental Health is a controversial subject, and I think David did a wonderful job portraying that. There are some dark moments, so I would make sure you are prepared.

Naomi is running from a mentally unstable ex-boyfriend and falls right into a home near a cemetery. After her cat seems drawn to a particular grave, Naomi delves deep into the young girl’s “accidental” death and finds herself befriending a spirit.

Spiteful Punks: dolls and douchebags part one by Madeline Fay – Review by Carly Vogler

Spiteful Punks: dolls and douchebags part oneSpiteful Punks: dolls and douchebags part one by Madeline Fay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first story I have read by Madeline Fay, but it will not be my last. Not for the weak of heart due to the mature content. (Rape, sexual assault, torture). This is a quick read that will leave you wanting more. It’s one of those page turners that makes you forget you need to do anything else.

Tillie’s teen years were horrific. When the people who are there to protect you, are the ones causing you harm, what is there to do? Each character has more to them than meets the eye, leaving you emotional and distraught.

Can love shine through the trauma?
