My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fortitude was a great 5 star read. This is a historical romance set during the Spanish-American war.

This is Claire’s story and what she goes through due to her choices. Claire was a brave, independent and strong woman who stood up for what she believed in. She is a nurse for the Buffalo soldiers, caring for them and helping them recover. When things take a twist, she finds herself caught up in racial issues.

Carrie Dalby continues to pull me in with her writing. I really enjoyed this book, there was so much going on. My emotions were all over the place. At times it was hard to read some of the racial parts. All of the secondary characters added a great element to the story. There were several twist and turns. If you’re looking for a good read that will tug at your emotional strings this is the one for you. 1-click and get started today.

Fortitude is a novel by Carrie Dalby. This is my first novel by this author.

At the start of the Spanish- American war, Claire O’Farrel travels to Florida to help with the wounded.

Racial tensions arises causing her to go to the hospital tents for colored people.

Will Claire be able to overcome to prejudices and find a happy life for herself.

I usually don’t read historical novels but with this being my first, I did enjoy it. The pace was a little slow at first but eventually picked up.

For anyone looking for something different to read, I recommend it.

FORTITUDE by Carrie Dalby. This is not the usual type of book that I read but I really enjoyed it. This was a very emotional read set in 1898 when Claire decides to be nurse for the Buffalo Solider’s during the Spanish American War. This was unheard of for a red head, freckled, white woman but Claire was not your average woman. Her best friend was Creole which was not popular during the Jim Crow Law days. As a nurse she falls in love with a solider and that throws her into the fire of the racial wars of the times. Claire is very hard headed and will do what she wants, not normal in that day and time. She is a modern day bad a#@! I loved this book and I read it in one sitting. I think you will enjoy it as much as I did!

To be honest, I don’t know what I expected from this book. Something to take me to another place for a few hours maybe, but what I got was so much more. I found myself fully engrossed in this story and with the characters who broke my heart a few times. Fortitude is defined as courage during pain or adversity, this books shows what fortitude looks like in a way that is relatable and imaginable. Claire is one of the most amazing characters I have read in a long time, she shows what all good heroines should; empathy, bravery, and of course fortitude. I don’t usually read books like this, from this time period because it just breaks my heart but this is a great example of why we should be reading this material. This opened my eyes to not only this incredible writer but to a topic that I’m eager to dive into more. I am looking forward to seeing just how far Carrie Dalby will go in the book world.

This is an amazing story of friendship, love, challenges and racial discrimination during war time.

Claire and Lorette leave their homes to become nurses for the troops. Trouble starts when they place Lorette and Claire into the camp. With the Jim Crow laws that meant there was segregation between white and black people. So when Claire volunteers to work in the camp where she is the only white person problems start to arise.

During her time she falls in love with a solider from that camp which leads to punishments, and discrimination against Claire and her family on her return home.

This story is a story of courage against all odds, standing up for equality between races and fighting for a love you want. Its enjoyable to read but in parts is very sad and makes you realise how destructive humans can be towards either other just because of skin colour

Fortitude by Carrie Dalby is a coming of age story. This story is set around 1898 featuring Claire, a young woman on the verge of changing her life forever. So many choices at a young age that seem beyond our grasp of understanding today. There was a lot of self discovery within this book, along with growth of the character. Carrie Dalby created vivid imagery in relation to the character and the events that were going on during this time frame.

FORTITUDE by Carrie Daley is a five star novel. I love historical fiction. I love how I can learn about different parts of our history while I still can enjoy a story of someone who might have actually existed. Claire decides that she needs a change and wants to follow her best friend to be a nurse for the Spanish American war. After arriving, she realizes she has been stationed at the black camp. Many people at the time do not want to work there or even be sent there because of the racial tensions. Claire, on the other hand, could care less. She enjoys helping people and could care less who it is she is helping. When she falls in love, she has many decisions to make. This story is heart wrenching and loveable.

A great read about bravery. Claire O’Farrell is a woman living in America with her family. She speaks her mind and has strange acquaintances which get her into trouble. One day, she and her friend Loretta decide to sign up as nurses to help soldiers in the Spanish – American War. The story follows her adventure in this vocational calling, through danger and illness and violence as Claire grows as a character with the story. When she gets tangled up in events, will her bravery help her make it out alive?
A great read. Well developed plot with twists and turns. Well developed characters like Claire standing up for herself but also kind and compassionate underneath or Joe as funny and wise but also kind underneath. Great cast of supporting characters like the strict Aunt Norah or the lilvely Loretta.
I loved the visual detail throughout the novel like with the island with the waves and the boats and the seagulls and its sights and smells as if you were actually there. Or with the farmhouse with its hills and goats and chickens for a sense of farm life and family written perfectly.
I liked the sense of it being a bildungsroman as Claire grows as a person throughout the narrative, with the first person used perfectly to display her thoughts and feelings. The sense of a historical novel was written well, with societal issues and gaslights and wars in the narrative.
The only issue i would raise is that there were a lot of long sentences which made it hard to get into to the narrative. This could be resolved by a variety of sentences lengths to keep the reader engaged. I would also have liked a date at the start as a chapter title to make it easier for the reader to know what time period it is, especially if you are not from America. Overall, a great read and I would give it four stars.

My Achilles heel is historical fiction. It is the one genre that consistently makes my heart flip flop, melding historic details and events with characters that feel authentic and plots that stand the test of time. Dalby does a beautiful job weaving a Civil War era tale with riveting characters. I simply couldn’t read this book fast enough and was hooked from the very first page.

Fortitude was an excellent read and one that I found really difficult to put down. I really like historical fiction but I’m more of a romance type of reader so when I read the blurb for this book I was intrigued to try something historical and a little different and I am so glad that I did, I loved every minute of this story. There were some pats that for us today were hard to even comprehend but for the time period that it was written about that is how people thought and for me I was impressed with how to author dealt with them. I have read books by this author before so I knew it would be well written but what shone through for me was the level of detail that the author included I could tell that she had really researched well before writing this story. I liked that characters, I thought that they were well developed and I connected with them.
I thought that Fortitude was definitely a great read and I look forward to more from this author again in the future.

It’s hard for me sometimes to read about the past. The pain and suffering people experienced because of the color of their skin. Claire is very unique in her time. She doesn’t see the issue so she loves and gives from her heart. She stepped up to help when none else would. She didn’t really think of the consequences but that made it more genuine. Her need to help others outweighed her reputation. The author painted us a story that could be true. The life people lived in these times were scary. I really liked Joe as well he grew up in their time apart and I think it’s because he sees more from Claire’s POV. The story made me sad but also happy. Because I look at the world now and know that it isn’t like this much anymore. We share our schools and cultures. We mix our races. We love just because we can. We date whoever we want and live to see another day without fear of that choice. It’s a beautiful thing and the author gave that to Claire. Hope that one day everyone will see life through her eyes.

Fortitude By Carrie Dalby. This story was an enjoyable read, while I didn’t quite get completely emerged into it I still couldn’t stop until the end. The author does a good job of writing about a time in history that most people seem to forget. It’s well written and I feel well researched. It’s paced nicely with characters you can connect with on some level. I’m not a huge fan of historical fiction but this one wasn’t disappointing, I enjoyed finishing the story the author had to tell. The subjects told in this story are sometimes hard to imagine a world where they existed but I think the author wrote about them well. I’m giving this story a four star review and recommend it.

Fortitude by Carrie Dalby takes place in the late 1890’s. One thing I have to say that I enjoy the most is that Carrie Dalby can pick apart historical time and test the limits of what others may think when they were there in the flesh. This story has romance (forbidden love), danger, racism, acceptance, secrets, drama, and emotions that run high at times. The story is set in the Spanish-American War where racism and Jim Crow laws are happening. Claire is the female main character and one who pushes the buttons around her. Claire is a smart and strong but ends up in the wrong time period. She is a nurse who is tending the Buffalo Soldiers. She enjoys working with the black soldiers and that is start of the problem. There is such an emotional response to what is going on and intense hatred is astonishing to me. It was hard reading some of the story because I was on this emotional ride and not sure how to feel at other parts. I highly recommend this book and maybe we can get our students to read this story so that they can grasp the reality of the past and maybe learn from it so it does not repeat again.

Fortitude by Carrie Dalby was a pretty okay read, that shed some light onto a dark dangerous time.

Not my first read by this author so I knew going in that the writing would be smooth and the plot well researched. This book was such, though I do have some things that aren’t sitting quite right, and that’s mainly the ending. I wasn’t satisfied, or felt like it tied anything up like an ending should. Now it wasn’t bad, I just felt that, it didn’t quite fit with the overall story.

Let’s get into it shall we. Well written and engaging, I was pretty hooked on this book, but I wasn’t fully absorbed. From the synopsis I thought the plot would be fast moving and thriller like. But this turned out to be a completely different type of story. The start was slow, but the easy flow of the writing made it enjoyable. I just felt there was a disconnect somewhere, and I don’t know if it was the misguidance of the synopsis, or the MC herself. I guess the best word would be flat, there were some flat areas that drew me out of the story.

Now don’t get me wrong, this is a very well researched and compelling story, and I loved the friendship and message. I’m just on the fence about it a little bit. But as you know reading is subjective and what I didn’t like, you might. So just because I had some issues, and as I said this isn’t a bad story, doesn’t mean you will as well. So please take my recommendation and my stamp of approval, that you will find the message and selflessness, as endaring and captivating, as I did.

Happy Reading

Fortitude is set in the period of time in our history where the Jim Crow laws were still a huge deal. Claire is the story’s main female character and she goes against the odds to assist her friend in a colored camp for soldiers. She stands out like a sore thumb with her red hair and freckles but beats the odds by doing her best. She faces many struggles as the story progresses and experiences love and friendship in unlikely ways. I marveled at how strong her character was and how she matured during her time at the camps. Her story made for a wonderful read and I had a hard time putting the novel down.

FORTITUDE by Carrie Dalby is one of those novels that crept up and swept me away unexpectedly. I was really not sure what to expect other than an darker coming of age story from what little I read before I was convinced that I needed to read it. I am glad that I did, and will definitely be adding this to my list of books to share with my tween daughter as she grows into that age. Claire O’Farrell is a character that can reach different age groups and still entertain while spreading a much needed history reminder and lessons in well, Fortitude. I was hooked on her journey from the very beginning and loved how Carrie Dalby brought to life the scenery as much as the characters. I felt as if I was right there amidst the chaos and sadness, weather it be in an action situation or a just an emotive situation where you could feel the emotions of the characters drip off the pages. It is definitely one I would recommend reading and having on your bookshelf too! I can’t wait to see what will come next from Carrie Dalby.

Fortitude by Carrie Dalby is a wonderful historical novel. Set in 1898 the story follows Claire, a sixteen year old girl. She experiences racism and the effect of Jim Crow laws on the people around her. She is held in contempt by some of her peers because she is not working in the medical tent for whites instead she is working in the tent for African Americans.
This novel is intriguing because of the historical nature and the topics covered. I liked the detail and the characters used by the author. This is a great story because it is speaking of a time that many want to forget in US history. The effects of Jim Crow laws are still seen in the south today and this speaks to how they impacted the lives of people when they were instituted. I really look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Fortitude is a historical romance by Carrie Dalby. I was excited to go for a spin with this author, as I haven’t read her work before, and I am always keen to try something new and take a chance on the unknown and exciting.

Fortitude is a riveting tale set in 1898, and the leading character, Claire, had her work cut out for her. She went against the norm, in a somewhat volatile world. From having a Creole as a best friend and nursing the enemy, Claire went against the grain, not fitting into what was acceptable by society at the time. This story was so easy to read, so easy to relate to, so easy to escape into. I loved the way the author described her characters, the plot and the old style way. I love reading about the past, and this author’s spin on it was fantastic. An epic story that I totally disappeared in. 5 stars.

This was an awesome story and written very well, and you could tell the author took time in making sure the facts were straight and very clear and easy to follow.

This is my second read by this author and I almost gave this story 4 stars, but that would not have been fair since it’s only that I am not crazy about historical stories that would cause that. I was surprised that in a lot of ways I truly enjoyed this book, although that time period and how people thought and reacted to certain things bothered me, it is what it is and how it was.

Because of how this author takes care in her words and stories and that they flow so smoothly I will absolutely be looking for more.

Fortitude is a superb story by Carrie Dalby. This is historical fiction at its best, something I have come to expect from Ms. Dalby. There is friendship, danger, romance, racism, secret love, intolerance, acceptance, drama, secrets, emotion, honour, and is a social and political snapshot of the times.
The story is set during the Spanish-American War, with Buffalo soldiers, the Jim Crow (segregation) laws, forbidden love, and the hardships, violence, and intolerance of the times. We follow Claire O’Farrell on her journey- with a Creole as her best friend and an idealistic nature, her choices in life conflict with the views of society at the time. Claire is strong, brave, strong, and full of faith- even when it puts her in danger. There were some sweet scenes, as well as more heart-wrenching, emotive, intense and chilling moments- which all served to kept me flipping the pages to find out what would happen. The story was definitely thought-provoking!
I love the way Ms. Dalby is able to build vivid images with her words, bringing her story and characters to life and allowing us, the readers to fully immerse ourselves in the story. Her attention to detail is brilliant!
The characters were really well crafted- given their own complex personalities that gave them believability. I always enjoy anything historical, if it’s done well- which this book certainly was!
Looking forward to more from Ms. Dalby.

Thank you, Ms. Dalby!

The story Fortitude by Carrie Dalby is a coming of age book that I loved reading. It is a story that takes you to a time when the societal boundaries are strict and when friendship or love that break the rules can cause scandal. One of the reasons that I found myself loving this book is the character of Claire O’Farrell. She is a young woman who is smart, independent, and strong. She is not one to conform or be told who she should care about. This story tells of her going to serve as a nurse for the Buffalo Soldiers. Her journey has her helping soldiers in need to recover from their injuries. She is a kind and compassionate person. She soon finds herself in danger and caught up in the racial violence that is all around her. The consequences of her decisions follow her home. Read this book for her full story. This is a book that had my emotions going up and down the entire time I was reading it. There are moments that are heartbreaking, sad, and others that made me angry with the treatment many of the characters received. There are also moments that warmed my heart. This is a story that is thought-provoking. There is intense and emotional dialogue. It is a book that I couldn’t get out of my mind even after I had finished it. There are many characters that are introduced and interact with Claire. They range from those who appreciate her hard work and those who strongly disagree with her and her actions. This is a book that pulls you in from the beginning and didn’t let me go until the end. I would highly recommend reading it.

It was in April 1898 when I, Claire O’Farrell, made a decision that ultimately changed my life forever.
I had never been one to follow society’s “rules”. My oldest friend was a Creole at a time when that simply wasn’t done. Then, I made an even bolder decision by serving as a nurse for the Buffalo Soldiers during the Spanish-American War. By doing so, it was evident to all that I held little regard for the Jim Crow laws.
My choice of working in that camp hospital put me in immediate danger, but after I gave my heart to one of the soldiers there, I found myself caught in the racial violence besieging the area.
When the consequences of my past decisions followed me home, I had no choice but to cling to my faith and pray that I find the path I was meant to travel.

Perilous Confessions (The Possession Chronicles Book 1)
By Carrie Dalby
Rated 4 stars

I was way wrong about this book. With the cover photo and The word possession in the series name. I thought this was a demonic story. But it doesn’t seem to be that way at all. It a love affair back in the early years. Where ladies were meant to be respectable and the men rakish. This deals with that as well as the darker side of those days. How can a love survive when everyone and everything is against them?
I enjoyed the characters but felt the story was overly long. It was repeated telling of the devotion and love for the main couple. Near the end it picked up and got crazy. I kept waiting for something to happen. The other “proverbial” shoe to drop. Each of the main characters was adventurous and wanted to live outside the norms of society. Tough to do with family obligations. Edward and Fredrick were nice secondary characters. They added charm and appeal. Eliza is not at all what I expected. She is a free spirit who enjoys what life has to offer.

I enjoyed the story. Alex and Lucy were lovely and I really rooted for them. I loved that he called her: “My queen…..”. At the ending and after reading the epilogue I am left with more questions than answers. Then I read the sneak peak of the next book and am even more confused. This is a first time author for me. It was easy to get into the story and learn to like the characters (flaws and all) but I was wishing for a more satisfying ending.

Perilous Confessions (The Possession Chronicles Book 1)Perilous Confessions by Carrie Dalby
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Aspiring writer Lucy Easton was an innocent young lady whose lively imagination meant she was ripe for seduction. Her brother Edmund’s friend Alexander sets his sights on her and she is swept up in his passion.
In the background, family friend and recent widower, Freddy is also captivated by Lucille. Younger sister Opal is the only one to notice the goings on but her brusque manner means that no one believes she is doing any more than causing trouble.
As Alex pursues Lucy through the book I found myself rooting for him, and not thinking he was the “cad” he had first appeared to be.
I liked that the opening of this book introduced us quickly to the time period of the book. At once I could imagine the sumptuous surroundings of the age and put myself in a room with the main characters. This author is an excellent storyteller, her descriptions of the clothing, the house and beyond were lovely and left nothing to the imagination, we were transported to 1905 Mobile and happily stayed there for the whole novel.
I am thrilled that this is the first book in a series as I can’t wait to see where the author takes the characters next. A 4.5 star read for me.

Perilous Confessions (The Possession Chronicles Book One) by Carrie Dalby is the first book i have read by this author and I was not disappointed in any way. This Gothic Romance pulled me right on with amazing storyline, strong characters, and so many secrets that are lurking everywhere. The ups and downs mixed with such emotional truly grab a reader. The author did an amazing job grabbing the reader’s from the get go to the very end of this book.

Parents and family always want what is best for their children but even then it does not always mean its best for them and their happiness. Alex and Lucy both are dealing with this and once they come together in this book you are shown an era that is filled with sadness, guilt, love, passion in the deep south. So much can happen when a young lawyer and aspiring novelist are lead by desire and love, and show the families that surround them, that they are each other’s happiness

I give this book 4 stars and so can not wait to read the next one in this amazing series! .
