A Crossbow Christmas by Ann Swann – Review by Shelly Kittell

A Crossbow ChristmasA Crossbow Christmas by Ann Swann
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Carina is just trying to get back on her feet after the pandemic threw her life a curve ball. Max offers her the opportunity. This book is the best “feel good” that I have read this year. The writing is heartfelt. You can truly feel the emotions in the writing. She tries to get her husband and family together for a holiday. Who can’t relate to that? I never read the back because I always like to judge a book by my opinion. I went in wondering if this was an “age-gap” romance. I was so glad to see it was “second-chance” and a friendship one. The characters are all so special in this book. They each had their own role in the story. The storyline is exquisite and interesting. You can’t put the story down. You are pulled right in. Get a cup of cocoa and join everyone in town. That ending…..I love this book. Another I will be gifting to friends. A definite holiday must read.

This was such a perfect book, to bring forth the feeling associated with the holidays! The book was touching, strong and connecting characters, and a strong sense of the beautiful holiday spirit!

Carina was such a wonderful character, was very easily to connect to her. I think especially on how she endured the pandemic, and wanted nothing more than family time. It’s true though, with the pandemic we lost so many chances to be with loved ones, we need to embrace it now. I felt for Carina truly, trying to make plans and she was so full of festive spirit in her heart, and no one would budge for her. I found what she goes through, and comes out on top of, very sweet and touching. She grew her wings for sure, it was a beautiful read, touching, and perfect holiday read. Definitely a must read in my books Very much enjoyed it!

Such a sweet holiday story. Wonderful story and cast of characters. I think everyone grew in some shape or form, and established the meaning of the holidays. Highly recommend this must read book and author!

This contemporary romance is the first in the series and after reading it I personally can’t wait to see what happens in this story next. This contemporary romance has secrets, drama, chemistry and so much more that I found it hard to put it down. However I will warn you that this book does end with a cliff hanger which is personally driving me crazy. But I will be rereading it before I read book two just to get all of the amazing details. The characters were amazingly developed, and the plot has a little bit of something for everyone. So make sure you run out and pick up this contemporary romance today.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Rom Com Movie Club is the first book in The Rom Com Movie Club series. Lisa and her friends have had their Rom Com Movie nights since their younger days, and now in their 30s, they want to meet their romantic matches. Lisa had a rough childhood and finds it hard to trust anyone. Ryan has moved back home and has been burned in the romance department.
I really enjoyed this fun read. The story is lighthearted and filled with romantic tension. I enjoyed the characters, and the friendship Lisa and her friends shared. I also enjoyed the relationship that grew between Lisa and Ryan. The story was true to the rom com title.
I look forward to seeing who is featured in the next book in the series.

I love this book so much! Huge page turner for me and I couldn’t put it down. I’ve been in a reading slump and this was the book to pull me out of it! 😍😍 The connection Lisa has with her group of friends is absolutely AMAZING. The way they’re always looking out for each other and being their for one another is simply heart warming. Lisa had a rough child hood growing up. She didn’t have the family a lot of kids have. She was in and out of foster homes. Until one day as an adult, she met this group of 3 girls and they were inseparable ever since. You don’t see friendships as great as theirs and I adored every page I read. Then Lisa meets Ryan and it’s love at first sight! Lisa doesn’t think she deserves love and she thinks everyone is going to leave her, but Ryan makes it a point to make her BELIEVE she deserves everything good in life. It’s a really good book and I can’t wait for the second book to come out!!! I’ll be counting down the days. Highly recommend everyone to read this if you love a good rom com 😉

I loved this book. Just the title of this book pulled me in, but let me tell you it was more than I hoped. There was a cute meet, misunderstandings, friends, family, and insta-love. Lisa and Ryan are perfect. The whole cast of characters is just wonderful. The only thing that I am upset about is that I have to wait a month before the next one comes out. Close friends Lisa, Mindy, Ruby, and Tina have a monthly Rom Com Movie Club they always plan for. With Tina the first of the friends getting ready to walk down the aisle, Lisa meets Ryan who is the brother of Tina’s fiancée. Ryan is intrigued by Lisa and they find themselves dating but if it doesn’t work could it destroy the friendship she has with Tina or could it be the best thing that ever happened to her?

I really enjoyed this one. As a movie buff this one checked my list of books to read. I also am a big fan of food especially food blogger’s as plot line and this had it as well. Really entertaining and I think it had a very honest feel for the couples and characters who look out for one another. Entertaining story, look forward to the next book.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Although I didn’t read the other books in this series, The Protector is easy to read as a standalone and gives us a bit of insight into the former books couplings. The subject matter may be a bit triggering to some readers, but it was well written and not graphic details. The character of Renee is so heartbreaking and stronger than she is willing to allow herself to feel. Declan is her rock and the only one she wants to open up to full heartedly. This story takes us into a form of intimacy that stems from trauma and helping each other heal in the most horrible of circumstances. I really liked the pairing of Declan and Renee and how they both had to conquer a relationship built first on trust and lack of physical touch.

4 Stars

The Rom Com Movie Club- Book One by Bernadette Marie was such a great read. It is a contemporary romance, with witty humour, banter, friendship, fate, angst, drama, chemistry, and wonderful characters.
This grabbed me right from the start and I soon found myself fully immersed in the story, reading the whole thing in one sitting. The characters were really well-crafted into fully developed individuals with their own personalities, quirks, and flaws. Our MC’s are both a little broken and carry their own pain- and were so great together. There was a little insta-love, but the author didn’t make it too easy for them, throwing in a little drama and angst, as well as meddling friends and family, to build some tension and keep us (the reader) turning the pages to find out how it all plays out in the end.
Another to add to my list of favourites by Bernadette Marie.
Bring on Book #2!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Bernadette Marie.

The Rom Com Movie Club - Book OneThe Rom Com Movie Club – Book One by Bernadette Marie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lisa, Mindy, Ruby, and Tina have been friends since college. Although Lisa didn’t actually attend college, she met the other girls while working at the coffee shop the others were at to study. The girls adopted Lisa into their lives, and they became an instant chosen family. Every month they gather together for a Rom Com movie night of food, face masks, and toe nail polish. On Lisa’s night, Lisa meets Tina’s soon to be brother-in-law, Ryan, and is instantly attracted to him. Tina, in the throes of wedding madness, tells Lisa that under no circumstance is she ok with her dating Ryan. While the other girls all try to help even out Tina’s wedding mania, Ryan pursues a relationship with Lisa. Can Lisa find a way to balance her love for Ryan and not get caught up with comparing their love to a Rom Com? Can Tina see that her friend’s happiness is worth more than her feelings?

Wow. What a great first book to a series! Each character was well written and all relatable. The author did a fantastic job of describing anxiety and how it affects those who suffer from it. The girls’ relationships with each other are something that everyone should have. Love that is deep and willing to tell the truth even when it hurts. People in their corner, cheering them on but pulling them back from the crazy ledge. I am really looking forward to reading about the other girls finding love!

The Rom Com Movie Club
By: Bernadette Marie

I have been a fan of Bernadette Marie for a while now. So I was very excited to start another book by her. Once again, I was not disappointed. It is what I have come to know and love from her. A book with wonderful characters and fantastic plot line and me not wanting the story to end. I always feel like I am one of the characters in the story when I read her stories.
I absolutely loved this story. Lisa, Mindy, Ruby and Tina are the types of friends I have wanted for myself but have never found. They are the friends that get together once a month to celebrate friendship and watch a romantic comedy. Their night is full of traditions – starting with wearing a baggy college sweatshirt and pretending it is the sleepovers they loved as teenagers. The biggest tradition of all is the searching for the happily ever after through film.
This time however, things begin to go a little sideways and their friendships are tested. Lisa has not exactly believed in happy endings, but she loves the idea of them. Tina is getting married and stressed out beyond belief. She is venting to Lisa about how she is sharing her future in-laws house and how that house is growing by one more. Her fiancee’s brother is moving home. Lisa asked to see a picture of Ryan and sparks instantly flew.
When they met the chemistry was unimaginable. However, it also tested the waters of the girls’ friendship. The last think Lisa wants to do is ruin Tina’s wedding, but should she have to walk away from her happily ever after? Or will Tina come around and see how much happiness and love Ryan and Lisa have for one another.
I definitely love this story and the characters. I cannot recommend this story enough to those that love a good comfort of a story about friendship and love.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As a parent of young adults, I am not usually a fan of the young adult troupe. But I took a chance on WE Blend and I am so glad I did! What a well written, passionate, sweet story!

Young adults may claim to know it all but they really are just trying out what they do know and discovering what they don’t. The two main characters, Wil and El learn that money is the root of many problems, whether you have it or you don’t.

This story has all the feels. It made me laugh, cry and even sigh. The situations these characters find themselves in, especially the ones they create, are realistic and believable. Many times, I found myself saying “that’d be my luck!”

This story was easy to read with the plot clearly laid out, what wasn’t clear was how these two were going to get their HEA! I enjoyed reading book 1 and am looking forward to the next story in this series.

WE Blend (Falling for the Rockstar's Daughter Series #1)WE Blend by Willa Drew
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a beautiful story. Seeing into El and Wil both just kept me completely captivated. I just kept pretty much yelling at Wil to just tell her already, but they kept getting closer with so many perfect moments for him to have said something. The emphasis on music for both El and Wil just makes so much sense for me because I firmly believe music is the universal language and can speak for you when you don’t have the words. The lyrics they write together are so beautiful and I just wish that I could hear the instruments, the melodies and harmonies, blending together to create magic. I also feel like El’s relationships with her parents was so relatable, like something we all understand, knowing our family expects something specific from us, but that’s not our dream. I also truly adored her relationship with Zoe, having a true confidant is so important to not feel completely alone, but also to have someone who will just cheer you on as you take steps to follow your dream. The entire story just sucked me in from the very beginning, and I was cheering for both El and Wil through their whole journey.

The Rom Com Movie Club (The Rom Com Movie Club Book 1) by Bernadette Marie – Review by Paloma Fierro 1/11/2022

Lisa, Tina, Mindy, and Ruby are the proud founders of the rom com movie club. A special tradition that got them through college and fortified their friendship. Lisa is the oldest of the group and had had some hardships in her life: as  a foster kid only her final family provided her with enough love and kindness so she could get her life together at a very young age. When she gets a job as a barista at a coffee shop near where the rest of the girls go to school, the life changing moment makes everything new and long lasting.

Ryan Blair is back home after a serious spin on his love and work life. Not only he returns to his parents home but to his brother’s, Aaron,  wedding, he happens to be engaged to Tina. Soon after his arrival Aaron presents him to Tina’s friends, and Lisa catches his eye, little he knows that Lisa has her eye on him as well.

A romantic story of two characters that had a few scars to heal, and how in the development of their love story friends and family get in the way trying to tell them how and when it is ok to be together.

The Rom Com Movie Club. Just the name inspires fun and good feelings. I wonder when I should start my own club. Bernadette has of course hit the nail on the head with this new delightful Rom Com series. It is so easy to get lost in this tale and before you know it you have come to the end.

It is also told in dual POV which is my favourite way to tell a story. There is insta love but it’s done so well that it doesn’t matter in this story when you know you know not that it bothers me anyway but just saying. Opposites definitely attract in this tale.

When he sees her in the delightful facial mask and pretty polish on her toes, he realises she is the one for him and the fun begins.

I was worried about her best friend I mean who thinks she is out to ruin her wedding just because she has found a man. Ok so he is her brother-in-law to be but seriously! Really, I did want to smack her for a minute or two.

I am excited to see where this series goes. I anticipate more fun, a lot steamy and some clever wit.

Ok, please excuse the fan girl in me-but you need to read this book right now! It was flipping amazing from start to finish I could not put this one down, it engaged me and captivated me! Perfect read!

This book was realistic in many ways. I know I love my romance books, and how girls meet guys, and live happily ever after, No one ever talks about them in between! In this book, Ryan and Lisa and have the perfect match. But to stay together there are many obstacles, characters, and drama they have to fight against! Sure it would be easier to quit, but when you have something sooo good is it not worth fighting for? The book really spoke to me, and the characters sucked me in! This quickly became a new favorite for me!

I truly loved this book. And again very much a high recommendation from myself and you need to read this book sooner than later! Definitely a well worth reading of a book and author!

Renee Cadmon is recovering from being taken and sold. After she is rescued she finds she is better off not leaving her room. Before she was taken she had a crush on her brother’s best friend, Declan. Now she feels he wants nothing to do with her, because of what she went through. Declan has always liked Renee, while she wants nothing to do with him. He still stays close by and makes sure Renee knows she is safe and protected. Declan also meets her for lunch, because he would do just about anything to stay close to Renee. That is all I will say about this fast paced and emotional story. This author has always impressed me with ner stories. This one did not disappoint. The author writes clearly and sends you through her book. I love her characters as they feel like friends I would love to hang out with. Their story is extremely believable, as well as heart wrenching. Have the tissue handy as you will need it. Also throwing your tablet is not a good Idea.

All of it just makes this wonderful story about love and friendship and instant connections.

This book was a true delight to read. A fun, entertaining romp through the rom com’s as we follow Lisa and Ryan’s relationship. Oh, the chemistry is bubbling, the trouble is brewing and the laughs are coming. Most people who have been in relationships can relate to this romance. I found the characters relatable. It kind of felt like Tina & Aaron were the back story. I love Ryan and Lisa. Their story shows how they have to work to make love work. All the references to the Rom Com movies are terrific. We needed this book. The writing is full of light humor, contemporary, and just plain entertaining. This author writes in a tone that makes the story feel real, like you are there and these could be your friends. I can’t wait for book two. A definite favorite of mine.

Once a month, for as long as they’d been friends, Lisa, Mindy, Ruby, and Tina gathered for Rom Com Movie Club night. Facial masks, nail polish, and wine could settle the world around them as they dished on movies that made them want to love—even if the premise of happily ever after seemed far-fetched.

Having been tossed around from home to home growing up, Lisa didn’t have much of an idea of what happily ever after was supposed to look like. Her friends had become her stable home, and their love was enough to carry her though day to day. But life had always thrown obstacles at her, she never considered it might throw a man her way, which would cause a rift with her best friend before her best friend’s wedding.

When things went bad, it usually started a trend, and Ryan was caught in that loop when he decided to return home to live with his parents until some other opportunity came his way. He had no idea that opportunity was going to come right at him when he followed his brother into the girly chaos that was Rom Com Movie Club night, and he fell head over heels for Lisa, in a clay facial mask and wet toenails.

Falling in love with her best friend’s soon to be brother-in-law wasn’t ideal timing, but when had timing ever been on Lisa’s side? Now with a man who loves her and a best friend who assumes Lisa’s out to ruin her wedding, Lisa must decide which happily ever after she wants. The one with the man and the fairy tale ending, or the love of a friend who has been there for her whenever she needed her.

Because when you least expect it… and when you’re least ready for it… love happens.
Casey McDaniels lacked direction, spending the better part of her youth boyfriend hopping, partying, and bartending – her dreams, career ambitions, and education put on the backburner in favor of a social life and steady paycheck… that is, until a new lawyer moves into town.
When sexy, smart, and brokenhearted Austin Templeton relocates from Los Angeles to Chicago, Casey can’t help but put her former lifestyle aside in favor of the sweet romance that erupts between them. Finding more than just her heart set ablaze, Austin’s own professional ambition ignites a fire beneath her – pushing her forward into uncharted territory.
But one thing’s for sure… his career will always come first. When an unexpected promotion threatens to take him back to California, Casey reels, forced to choose between the man who captured her heart and the newfound path to success he led her down.
With her heart torn down the middle, Casey leaves the choice in Austin’s hands. After all, what’s more important? A job… or love?

More Text Than Sex by Jim Shomos – Review by Tara Johnson Barnes

More Text Than SexMore Text Than Sex by Jim Shomos
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Robbie is faced with the task of helping Annie and Cat run a public song writing contest. A challenge that he is up for as far as working with Annie because Robbie thinks they will become romantically involved. On the other hand, the thought of working with Cat terrifies him. Annie is on the verge of relaunching her singing career after taking time off to raise her son. She has been raising her eight-year-old son alone since her ex-lover/manager fled the country nine years ago. Suddenly her ex is back and wants joint custody of their son.

The author has done a wonderful job of portraying the hard work, dedication, and determination that goes into having a successful music career. It is like having a behind the scenes look at the music industry and experiencing the blood, sweat, and tears that goes into running a successful music business. The characters were a blend of personalities that somehow worked together and were relatable. Some moments were tense, some moments were emotional, and some moments left you singing along to the tune you could not help but sing inside your head. An enjoyable read.

Music, a balm for the soul
This book is a multilayered melody with emotion-filled undertones. The story follows Cat, Annie and Robbie as they navigate the music industry that is Merger Music. They all have secrets and need to resolve and the author brilliant,y executes this while wrapping the reader in a blanket of tunes. There is a good balance between the drama and the banter and the characters are well developed and easy to relate to. An entertaining and enjoyable read.
