Deceptively Yours (Titans of Chicago Book 1)

She has done it once again. I started this book just before going to bed. Laid in bed reading and before I knew it I was almost half done with the book.

Harper breaks my heart. She has such a happy young life. Parents are happy, is with the boy of her dreams, school is going well and overall she’s happy until she isn’t after some world altering news.

Gabriel is the next generation of the Chicago Titans, while we don’t know the first generation at this point I have a feeling we will get to know them through their kids.

I have read several books by Ms. Storm over the past years and she has yet to disappoint me. She is an instant click as soon as I see her name and will continue to click without thought.

I love this author’s writing style so I was very excited to jump into this romance! I really enjoyed this enemies to lovers romance. Mira is just starting out in her new job and is already not excited about her office mate. Then she meets her boss and he is also someone from her past. When a line is crossed Mira uses it to her advantage to get a leg up. I mean who can blame her. It was so easy to get into this story and will keep you turning pages to see what happens next. You don’t have to read all of the books in order either. I definitely recommend reading the others as they are really great reads!

Perfect Office Pact (Perfect Romance Series) by Maria Jane – Review by Santana Hicks

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Mira thinks she is on the track of having everything she ever wanted. A long term boyfriend whom she thinks she loves and wants a future with, and she landed a job in one of the best Realty companies out there. The only issue is her boss.

Mira’s boss is a pompous jerk according to her. He was her professor when she took Real Estate classes and he seemed to get annoyed by every little thing she did so why would he hire her? She doesn’t want to question it but when it seems as if he still dislikes her, she starts questioning his motives. It seems as if Mira can’t get out of her own head and starts self sabotaging her relationship, she questions her boyfriends commitment to her. She blames the fact that she never knew her father as being the culprit of why she feels unlovable.

Declan appears as a narcissist but in reality he is just reserved with strong defenses around him. What Mira saw as hints of annoyance was actually hints of annoyance to his feelings about her. He shouldn’t like Mira that way since she is basically the opposite of him but he can’t help it. He crosses a line out of genuine care but Mira doesn’t see it that way and blackmails him to take her under his wing in the Realty world or else she will tell everyone what he did. Things are very strained and tense between the two. Declan needs to tell her how he feels but will she feel the same?

Honestly, I hated Mira’s character. She is judgemental and childish. Throughout the book she was all over the place. She would say one thing and then change her mind. Her thoughts were so repetitive that I started getting annoyed with her character quite early in the book. Mira mentions 3 guys at the beginning of the book that at first I had no idea who the love interest was actually going to be.

I was interested in Declan, he remained a mystery for the most part. You only receive glimpses of the real Declan as time goes on, but underneath he seems like a sweet guy who just had his broken so hes slow to open up.

This was such a cute office romance to read over the weekend. It’s a clean, sweet romance that was a nice break from my usual reading. This was my first book from this author, but I’ll be picking up more. It was refreshing to read about Mira and Declan as they evolved throughout the story. Mira is a strong woman that doesn’t take any guff from anyone. Declan wants to be more than just an office boss in Mira’s life. What’s more important, your career or love? It was fun to read, and though the flow of the story felt a bit jolting at times, overall, I really enjoyed the experience. If you like sweet, clean office romances, look no further!

I have read other series from this author, and I can’t believe they can keep creating such magnificent stories! This is the first book in the Titans of Chicago series, and what a start it is. I loved the emotional rollercoaster twisting and turning throughout, the highs are heartwarming, and the lows are heart-wrenching. I enjoyed the flow of the story as it grabbed me from the beginning and never let go. The characters are well-developed, and I felt invested in them immediately. Harper and Gabriel start out as teenagers that are in love but are quickly dealt some devastating blows. Will they be able to recover at all? Does time really heal all wounds? I raced through this book because I needed answers, and I cannot wait for the next in this series. If you enjoy romance, suspense, and plenty of emotion, you’ll absolutely love this book!

An enjoyable contemporary romance with an enemy to lovers and an office romance theme. Declan Jordan is Mira Vasquez’s boss but having crossed a massive line Mira could end his career. However, Mira uses the situation to her advantage and agrees not to say anything to the board if he helps further her career. Soon Declan wants to get to know Mira on a more personal level, but to do so means breaking their pact. He would have to take a chance that Mira won’t want to end his career once she knows him better. I liked having the dual POV as it meant I felt more engaged with both main characters. The chemistry between Mira and Declan came across in the narrative and I liked how their relationship developed throughout the story. A sweet romance with plenty of humour, emotions and a bit of drama all of which kept me happily turning the pages.

This one is was rough for me. Mostly because I did not care for the actions of both characters throughout most of the book. She is very combative and he seems restrictive and obviously has some sort of issue. Just their interaction through a large portion of the book was off putting. Him secretly wanting her and she is basically clueless for years. Too many breakdowns and tantrums for the story. There is very little romance and when they do she always has her foot half way out the door. Arg! I really felt for Declan numerous times. Just with his attitude and struggles he has to go through daily but he offers hope because never seems to give up trying.

Overall this is just an okay story for me. I think I wanted more pleasant interaction as time went on between them and it just doesn’t really happen.

This book is a really quick read and it had me sunk into it from the beginning. I would say that this author seems to actually really love hockey or did an amazing job with their research. I actually really loved that it wasn’t just about the romance and the pull and tug between battling feelings for one another, it actually had hockey it in. That said the romance in this book is great. Yes, I did roll my eyes a bunch during this book because of the constant, “I want him/her, I don’t want to want him/her.” You get so invested into this book because you want them to work and get over their things to be together because you can see how good they are together. It’s like everyone in the room can feel their tension when they are together and are just rooting for them. I could not put this book down, even as frustrated I got with it. That just means it is a really well written if I am so emotionally involved in what is happening. If you like hockey or love a sports romance, this book won’t disappoint.

This is a second chance at love contemporary romance with a dark element to it. I found myself engaged with the characters right from the start and the storyline kept me hooked. Harper and Gabriel were teenage sweethearts until tragedy parted them. When they meet again as adults Gabriel is still angry and hurt by Harpers actions. However, Harper has secrets, which explain why she did what she did thinking that by letting him go she could set him free. When they find that they are both in danger they can’t deny that all their old feelings are still there along with their connection. This was an emotional rollercoaster of a read and I found it to be a real page turner.

This is my 1st time reading this author. I’m not usually a fan of sports themed books, but I gave this one a chance and I’m glad I did. I didn’t realize it was the 3rd book in the series, but it worked as a stand alone, so that was helpful. But I do feel like if you read them all you’d get more backstory on characters that made an appearance in this book. Colby and Gabby have chemistry, there’s no doubt about that. But he’s noncommittal and she’s not falling for his bluster again, not after the last time. When fate throws them together for the sake of their friends, they have to get along. If you love a good lovers to enemies to lovers again (sorta) story… This would be an amazing read for you. Also if you love a good spicy sports romance, with a HEA, this would be a good story for you. As I feel like probably the whole series would be. I can’t wait to read the other books in this series, now.

This is the only book of the series so far (sad face sad face) . This book really had me in a choke hold like omg. At times it really felt like the author had my heart In her hands and was squeezing it, really hit me in the feels good and bad. Although Harper and Gabriel had some really spicy scenes together that wasn’t the only reason I loved this book. So well written it had me flipping the pages Faster than I could keep up, with danger, spice, love and heart wrenching trauma that will definitely have you on an emotional roller-coaster. It can be triggering for some readers though so be cautious.

So it was perfect when they had to work with each other, making old feelings Reignite old feeling good and bad. The passion between them is almost palpable I truly enjoyed this read and am going the read the first one now 🤣

Deceptively Yours is the first book in the Titans of Chicago Series and is a Dark Contemporary Romance with a bit of suspense added in. I’m not only a huge fan of this author but her Titans of Manhattan wass amazing and I couldn’t wait to dive into this one. I devoured this book in one afternoon because I simply couldn’t put it down I had to know what was going to happen next. Harper and Gabriel have grown up together and have been in love with each other sense a young age. These two are inseparable until tragedy strikes and she’s forced away. Over the years they have both been through things some terrible and some not. Can these two get a second chance at love? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. When Ashton’s new boss turns out to be her best friend’s brother, the sparks sizzle from the get-go. However, as strong as Ashton is in her day-to-day job, there is a side of her that she is ready to explore further, and that begins with an application to join Shattered Embrace. Zach is impressed with Ashton’s work as a consultant with his company. He is surprised, and intrigues, when an application for his BDSM club comes across his desk from said consultant. He thought he was stepping away from club life…but he may be just what this submissive needs.

This was a great story that introduced some aspects of the BDSM culture without being shocking for those who may not know what to expect. Both Ashton and Zach have a chemistry that sizzles…and it was entertaining to read how he helped Ashton find the side of herself that needed to explore. They worked well together in the boardroom and in the bedroom. The secondary characters were also quite enjoyable and I’m hoping they will get books of their own as the series continues.

A great 5 star read. All I can say is wow, what a great start to this series. I was pulled right in and did not want to put it down. Harper and Gabriel take us on a heck of a ride with their story. They grew up together and grew to love each other until betrayal made them enemies. When these two come back together, sparks fly among other things. My emotions were all over the place. I will warn that there are some scenes that could cause triggers for some. Overall I really enjoyed this read. These two about killed me emotionally, but I was happy with how things turned out. I was certainly on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was coming next. I can’t wait to read more from this series and author. 1-click and get started today.

Another win in the world of the Titans, this time with book 1! I was so excited to read this. Not my first and a million percent not my last read of Ms. Storms. The prose is fantastic, the passion and anger are as red hot as ever, the decisions the characters make in their lives and how they effect the others are as angsty and grief filled and loving and electric as ever.

Gabriel and Harper are children of the Titans. As teenagers they’ve been insulated for a lot of their lives, but they have also had a lifetime to feel the magnetism and special relationship possible amongst one another. Their first kiss was at age 7 and it began to cement just how much they belonged to one another forever. Gabriel was a hot shot athlete who was waiting to make the call on where he wanted to attend college, but all that mattered to him was being where Harper was. They had their entire lives mapped out, full of hope and excitement for the future and the steps they’d be taking together as they entered adulthood…until tragedy happened and Harper was whisked away across the country with barely enough time for whispered promises between them.

Just like that, they were separated and feeling lost except for the tethers that bind them together. They were so sure nothing would ever come between them for long, but Harper is forced to endure another trauma and horror, and her shame and guilt lead to a lie in order to protect Gabriel and it begins a decade of anguish, bitterness, hatred and shame. She begins to try to reach out to Gabriel, but the only burning emotions he feels is hatred and anger for her and he denies her requests. They end up being brought together unexpectedly, and Harper takes advantage of her opportunity to get his attention, even if it only brings more pain by causing him to lash out at someone he thought he once knew. Whatever it takes to get him to take notice and listen to her…she’s willing to take the heat. Her guilt and shame for lying to Gabriel has hung over her for her entire adult life.

Gabriel has never lost his passionate heat towards Harper, but it morphed from love to hate with Harper’s decision ten years ago. He wants to burn her with his disgust, but it isn’t the only thing still burning after all these years…they are both adults now, with many life experiences and choices behind them and have become different than the young adults that were so sure love could conquer all. He wants her to feel his disgust for her, to make her feel the pain of his heartbreak as starkly as he does. Will he ever give her a chance to say what she’s been trying to tell him all this time? Will their passion and magnetism burn as brightly as it always has, or will the flames of betrayal outburn them?

Another absolute win, there are some traumatic experiences in this book as a warning.

This was my first read by Maria Jane and I cannot wait to dive into another of her books. This story is of the trope of coworkers enemies to lovers. One of my favorite romance tropes and she did a good job with it. This one being more on the slow burn side. The characters were well written and sucked you into the story. Even the side characters are likable. You know it is a good read when you want to reach into the pages and shake the characters at times.

I accidentally started with this book instead of the first in the series, but I think it did well as a standalone. I definitely have the urge to pick up the rest of the series now that I’ve finished this one! This was my first book from this author, so I didn’t know what to expect, but I do enjoy a good sports romance story. The flow of the story is wonderful, and I felt pulled into the hockey world with Colby and Gabby. They both feel like very similar (stubborn) people under all the superficial, and I really loved watching their chemistry unfold and grow stronger. The author also has strong knowledge of hockey through and through which really made it more authentic and enjoyable as I absolutely LOVE hockey! I highly recommend picking this up if you love romance, sports, and especially a combination of both. Heading to pick up the rest of the series now!

Gabby is a retired figure skater who owns her own business creating costumes for present-day skaters. Gabby hates hockey due to being caught up in an affair with an emotionally unavailable hockey player. However, her best friend, Addie, becomes engaged to a professional hockey player who happens to be friends with that ex-love affair, Colby. Unfortunately, for Gabby and Colby, they were both asked to be the best man and maid of honor in the wedding of their friends. This turns out to be problematic because they can’t get over each other, but also hate each other at the same time. However, being the good friends that they are agree to get along for the wedding. Colby wants to be with Gabby again, at least sexually, so he is always pulling her strings to try and get her to waver. Gabby, while she wants the same thing, knows her heart can’t afford to keep going down that road. As the story goes on, they seem to get better at tolerating each other and sometimes coming to agreements, but there are many obstacles that keep getting in the way of progress. Will the two of them recognize that being in love is not a death sentence and be able to work through their feelings?
I enjoyed this book a lot. I like all character, but Gabby and Colby were great. Gabby was a strong, independent, woman looking for a love future. Colby, was a “typical” jock who acted tougher than he really was. The banter Colby and Gabby had was great! But when the story continued, you saw true change occur in Colby and you just wanted to fall in love with him yourself.

This is a really interesting contemporary romance. It was full of touching scenes, humour and a little bit of drama that makes me keep reading more.
I love how the author tells the story from the point of view of both our MCs. It gives the reader a more complete understanding on what the characters are thinking and feeling and also make their reactions make more sense.

Declan and Mira have had a strained relationship from the start. Mira was sure that Declan hated her whereas Declan was just confused about why he was feeling certain things around her.
Fast forward and Mira is now hired in Declan’s company. However the tension is still their between them and Mira doesn’t understand what’s caused it.
As the story progresses Declan finds himself in a compromising position and he could lose it all if Mira decides to make a complaint. But she sees this as her opportunity and she promises it will go no further if he helps her progress her career.
If only that was where the story ends. At the same time all this is going on Mira is having doubts about her relationship with her partner who doesn’t seem ready to commit and move the relationship forward. Could Declan actually be the guy she is looking for?
This is a sweet story and I loved how eventually as Mira gets to know Declan better she understands his behaviour and his quirks and what she realises really surprises her.
This was a really enjoyable read and I can’t wait to more from this author.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Deceptively Yours by Anise Storm is book one in the Titans of Chicago series. The story is full of some heavy content and should be taken into consideration if one is sensitive to certain topics. I enjoyed this second chance romance between Harper and Gabriel but I will admit I found myself cringing multiple times at Gabe and his behavior. While the pair have history, they haven’t seen one another in years and when they do Gabriel is quick to make it known he’s not happy to see her. But all the more happy to jump into bed. I also was definitely not a fan of how he treated her seemingly like garbage after all of the things that happen to Harper in this book. Just, woah. That said, it was clear when they were teenagers that they were “it” for one another and though Harper has come back in an effort to try and save Gabriel from harm, it is clear there is still pent up anger. Will this pair be able to see beyond their past to help one another? I will definitely be reading others from this author.

Harper and Gabe had their whole life planned out. From high school graduation to college to marriage and kids but when tragedy struck Harper’s family her whole world was shattered and destroyed. Little did Harper realize that the death of her parents would also be the life change that would destroy her in many more ways than just losing her parents. Over a decade passes with no contact between Harper and Gabe but with the death of his parents six months earlier and the possibility that Gabe could be in trouble, Harper could not chance Gabe dying also.
This is another phenomenal book written by this author. I love everything I have read she has written.

This is the 3rd book in the Hamilton Steelhawks series. These books can be read as standalones because I read this one first however I will definitely be going back to read the books that came before.
These are a sports romance based around an ice hockey team. The authors knowledge of the game and how it all works really gives the reader an insight into that life both on and off the ice.
This is Colby and Gabriella’s story.
This couple have history which I didn’t understand but I think reading the first 2 books would have explained that.
Neither of them are the type to want commitment but neither of them can deny the strong attraction and chemistry between them. After a couple of encounters could there be something more between them or is it just sexual chemistry messing with their heads.
Both Colby and Gabriella aren’t prepared to open themselves up to potential heartbreak so they keep their distance from each other.
However that all changes when their best friends decide to get married. With Colby as best man and Gabriella as maid of honour can they put their differences and rising sexual chemistry aside to keep it from spoiling their friends wedding or will being in close proximity to each other for too long bring all the things they have been trying to surpess to the surface?
Will they keep it together for the sake of their friends wedding? Will the chemistry combust and ruin everything? And what will happen if they give into temptation and the feelings instead of running away.
This was a really captivating read and I can’t wait till read more of this series.

A fast and spicy hockey romance,
What do you need to do when you are best man to your best friend and you need to work with the maid of honour, who happens to be the one woman he cannot move out of his fantasies.
Colby and Gabby have chemistry in abundance, the character growth is easy to follow and keeps you hooked, as we follow the relationship as they try to fill the roles needed without falling for each other. This is the third book in the series and I will be going back to read one and two.
The author’s use of terminology and hockey knowledge is great.

Deceptively Yours (Titans of Chicago Series) by Anise Storm – Review by Ayla Phipps

Deceptively Yours (Titans of Chicago, #1)Deceptively Yours by Anise Storm
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Everything was perfect until it was all gone. Anise Storm I truly love your work and your incredible talent. This is the first book in a new series, Titans of Chicago. Dual perspectives of Harper Grimes and Gabriel Blake.
Harper and Gabriel are the children of Titans, and he will become one as he gets older. They have been in love their entire lives and have had every detail of their future together planned out. Until…a car “accident” wipes it all away. With her parents gone her only living relative is her mom’s brother, George. The night she is given the devastating news she loses everything and everyone she ever loved when he takes her to Portland. Instantly she is living in hell and the moments of feeling loved and cherished are gone. Nearly ten years passed, and she never stopped loving the boy she left behind, her soulmate. Gabriel never considered life without her at his side, they were soulmates and had everything planned. She was gone and had broken his heart, but even after nearly a decade he still couldn’t hate her, he loved her and always would. Another accident following her questioning where her inheritance was, and she found herself terrified for Gabriel so much so she did the only thing she could. She flew to Chicago to force him to listen to her warnings, he was in danger. Quickly finding her wildest dreams coming true, she was back in his arms, the threat remained and the truth of everything would shatter her beliefs.
What was the true cause of the accident? Can she ever see the truth of who deserved her blame and let go of her fears? Gabriel never could love another, is she truly his again, for good this time? The world was honest and cruel, no shiny knight to rush in at the last moment and save the day. Though there was a man who loved her and against all odds refused to let her disappear from his life again. The journey of the characters overcoming trauma, learning, and accepting the truth, they never stopped fighting for the love they held for the other. I cannot wait for book two and curious to know which Titan will be next, perhaps Daxon and Charlie?
