Historic reads are always good, and this one is no exception. It starts off with multiple jumps, following how Lottie has met and known each character, quickly displacing what time and situation the reader has. Took a few rereads to get acquainted, but once general character introduction and world-building are established, it evens out. We are taken through one general plot, while plagued with another that quickly becomes the main drive for this story. Legal matters eventually lead us to a clerk-led POV, blackmail, all while trying to wade through flashback after flashback.
This story has many points and twists to it, and if you enjoy murder mysteries or anything based on true crime, you’ll enjoy this. It includes a main character who seems to have alternate personalities, both strict conservative during the day and open bisexual liberal when the sunsets. It hints at societal issues seen today, yet deals with the placing of the early 1900s.
Overall, a good read, it took me a little bit to get into it but ended up finishing with a different viewpoint. I would recommend this book as it ties in romance, historic fiction, fantasy, and the openness of the author and characters.

This is the fourth book in the series of Cozy Mysteries to Die For. It is a standalone book. I did not feel like I had missed anything from the prior books in the series. Beck is a newly licensed Private Investigator. Her old college roommate, Jacqueline, wants to hire her for her first paid PI job. While in college Beck did not like how Jacqueline had acted so was hesitant to take the job. Once Beck arrives she sees Jacqueline’s same actions and wonders if she made a mistake. Jacqueline’s father died and the police are saying it was a suicide. However, Jacqueline is determined that it wasn’t, but that it was murder. Beck is there to find out the truth and will do whatever it takes to find out the real answer. I enjoyed this book and it was an easy read.

This book was a recommendation from a friend that knows I enjoy reading historical event books. This one did not disappoint me. And it took me to a time and place I was not familiar with reading. I also must say that I enjoyed having the flow sheet along with the character list at the end of the book. That was a nice addition that I could flip over to when I needed clarification about the facts. The story kept me on my toes and the plot twisted and turned along the way. It was interesting to learn the behind-the-scenes information into the legal system during the early 1900’s. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of true crime mysteries with a little bit of romance blended in. It really sucked me in.

This is a great historical mystery. I really enjoyed how the author told this story and the concept of the main character basically living 2 separate lives, one with her female partner which at the time was unheard of and the other of a respectable lady in a job that demands respect.
This story was interesting and gripping but at times I really felt for Lottie as she struggles to keep both her lives separate, which today we wouldn’t even need to think about or consider.

Lottie works as a legal clerk and when she starts to work on a criminal case involving a police officer it becomes a job with more risks than you could even imagine.
Lottie finds herself being blackmailed but who is doing it and what do they hope to gain from it?
Now we have to follow Lottie as she tries to uncover who is behind the blackmail and try to save her personal life from coming out in the open and affecting her professional life.
After being so careful with keeping personal and professional separate who could know about her preferences and would be willing to use it against her to get what they want? And how does it all link to the trial she is working on of Officer Charles Becker.

I really enjoyed this book and I couldn’t stop reading until I found out who was behind it all. The historical twist was nice and the insight into Lottie’s life at the time when falls for the same sex was a big no no was interesting to read but at the same time also sad that it could have such a dangerous and shameful effect if the truth were to be exposed.
I throughly enjoyed this book.

Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and K.R. Mullins has done a fantastic job of taking the fictional life of our main character, Lottie, and weaving it into the historic Charles Becker trial. I love the way Lottie isn’t your typical female lead and yet she is in a very official position. When she starts getting blackmailed and they threaten to reveal parts of her life she’d rather leave in the dark, we see a fierce and stubborn woman who won’t back down.
I really enjoyed how Mullins integrated the Becker trial into her story. I definitely researched it as I was reading (because that’s just how I am) but I think she did a great job of seamlessly weaving the details from the trial into Lottie’s story.
I definitely recommend this title. It was a quick and interesting read.

This is an enjoyable and engaging historical crime mystery, set in New York City, in 1912 and the storyline is based on Police Lieutenant Charles Becker’s Conspiracy trial. The city is divided between Greenwich Village where rejected tradition is regularly flouted, and Manhattan where it is strictly upheld. The heroine of the story is Lottie Flannigan, and she manages to balance both sides of her life, embracing her bohemian lifestyle whilst working in the legal profession, clerking for conservative Justice Goff in Midtown. Lottie finds herself working on a high profile case which turns into a trial of a lifetime, involving a local Police Officer Charles Becker.

As Lottie’s professional and personal lives collide, she finds herself caught up in a blackmail scheme. With the blackmailer threatening to disclose her most intimate choices, if she doesn’t do as they say. Lottie believes it’s related to the Becker trial, but she has to find out who would benefit most from the verdict, and could her missing lover be a part of the scheme. Lottie is a great main character, likeable and relatable, and who I felt engaged with. The authors wonderful descriptive narrative brings the setting vividly to life, and the historical details made me feel as though I had been transported back to 1912. The storyline flowed well and the exciting plot had me hooked from start to finish. I definitely recommend reading this novel.

I have been a huge fan of this author for quite some time, since I have had the pleasure of reading the author’s other series, surrounding mysteries in Chicago. Let me say, my heart leaped with joy when I realized the connection between the main heroine in this novel and the other series!

Very much enjoyed this book and the story Greatly admired Lottie. Resultant and independent. For sure fan girled out on the certain scenes that Emma from the other series, made an appearance. The book was full of intrigue over what involved Lottie. She was a lot like Emma, but as Emma knows, sometimes when you put your nose too deep you get in trouble. Lottie was blamed for something, and she had to clear her name and figure out who the real culprit was before it was too late! Personally, a big thing I admired and enjoyed was the historical take. I do not mean just the time frame, women’s suffrage was a big thing in history and the author perfectly portrayed it into the novel. Excellent writing and an intriguing novel! I truly loved it!

I could not put this book down once I began, there was so many interesting concepts that kept me wanting to read! Highly recommend this author as well as their book Both are a must read that you will enjoy!

Divided Lives by K.R. Mullins – Review by Maryn Belling

Readers familiar with Mullins’ work will be at home in the lyrical patois of her writing. Newcomers will want to know that the cast of characters for the historical elements are located at the end of the text; it’s helpful to know it’s there so you can jump to it when needed. Whether you choose to read the author’s take before or after the novel is personal preference – probably if you like true-crime podcasts and other contemporary who-done-it perspectives on past events, you’ll read it both before and after.

It’s nice to see a different city from the Notebook Mysteries. Having some historical context helps, but the writing is accessible to readers as young as junior high or as advanced as having been children in the early 20th century. Ms. Mullins follows all the “rules” of authorship that Edgar Allan Poe set before us – no extraneous characters, letting the reader’s imagination fill in the details where possible.

There are social issues omitted from this text. Readers seeking additional context would do well to consider The Personal Librarian as a companion / concurrent read for cultural context.

This story is based on actual events that took place in Greenwich Village in 1912. Lottie, our main character, is definitely not one who follows or believes in societal norms. She frequents areas she shouldn’t frequent and keeps with company with people some would be desirable. Despite being considered bohemian, she also holds a very official office. She is a legal clerk for Justice Goff. She has begun working on a very important criminal trial. This trial is very polarizing as it involves a local police officer named Charles Becker. Once, Lottie begins working on this trial she begins being blackmailed. The problem is, these blackmailers are trying to expose areas of her life that she wants to keep hidden.
I loved this story of Lottie and her involvement in this trial. Her struggles seemed so real and I really wanted to learn more about the actual events. I cannot say enough how good this book is! It really makes me want to research the actual case and also Greenwich during this time period! I definitely recommend it, especially to fans of mystery and true crime.

Lottie is an amazingly independent woman in a time when women are challenging the status quo. A clerk in the Judges office, she finds herself helping with several mysteries. The most important one finds her trying to find out who is setting her up to look like she killed her casual lover, Rose. Could it be the upcoming trial? Who could it be? I have to say I loved this book. Emma, from the YA series had a cameo in parts. Wonderful to see it sort of tied in. Lottie is strong. The other characters all had their own individual personalities that had their own quirks. The
story is well-developed and carries itself. I loved the whole mystery throughout and the suffragettes, protest movement. The tone seemed to be how unfair women’s rights were and we saw that in how Henrietta and the others were treated. There was a little of everything to suit the tastes: humor, murder, mystery, romance, etc. A wonderful book and I hope we’ll see more of Lottie in the adult realm

I didn’t realize this was part of a series, but it read well as a standalone. It was a very intense novel dealing with a heavy topic. There is a TW for rape and sexual assault, so heed that before you start reading. That said, this is a very important topic to read stories about. The details are stunning and you can really feel the anxiety and despair come off the page. The main characters, Kate and Tilly, have been through more than their fair share of trauma and loss, yet are still able to help each other navigate the hard times. I also like that the series tackles abuse from people in positions of power. I know that many victims have a hard time coming forward about abuse and more still are either not believed or not taken seriously. There are perpetrators at all levels and it is good to read a very realistic depiction.

I lived in Cruces when I was younger, so I know a lot of the references to southern New Mexico. I felt like I was there while reading the book, particularly in the details of Kate’s gated haven. It felt a little nostalgic and definitely had some heart racing moments throughout the book. I will be on the lookout for the next book in the series!

This is the first book I have read from this author and now I’m hooked. This is the second book of the divine devils series. This book can be read as a stand alone but some of the parts of the book you could get lost if you don’t read the first book. I’m going to read the first book and then reread this book. This story captured my interest right from the start because of the characters. I could not put this book down so I read it all the way through. I can’t wait to see what this author will write about next.

Megan Getz is a very famous Hollywood star. She is known as an actress in a well known sitcom. Megan knows a lot of stars and she has everything she has ever wanted. She is shocked when she is now a victim of blackmail. Megan doesn’t know what to do so she calls in the best of the best the divine devils. Will this amazing team get to the bottom of this or will Megan get into danger?

This is the first book I have read in the series, and I fell in love instantly. Beck is smart, crafty, and intuitive. She loves her family and her bookstore. She has recently become a private investigator and agrees to do some work for an old frenemy. The character development and mystery kept me enthralled throughout.

This is the fourth instalment of the Cozy Mysteries to Die for series (which I am silly and did not realize) however! They do say they can be standalones. I will say I wish I had read the others to get some back story but what a great book! I enjoyed this sooo much! The series title says it all, perfect to cozy up and solve a mystery! I found this book well balanced, easy to read, and it kept my attention right to the end! Beck was an awesome character and I will definitely be reading more of the series!!

This is a great mystery book with some brilliant development and entertaining characters. Although this is the fourth book in the series it could be read a as a standalone. It was easy to follow and I connected with the characters straight away.
I have read a few books by this author and they are always so good. The author has a knack for developing the story well and keeping the pace. It is the same with this book. It is full of mystery and intrigue and kept my interest from start to finish. This is a great book.

This was good, it read more as a detective style story. Reminded me of some of the Ellery Queen mysteries I used to read. Kept me guessing as to where the story was going .

Is this the end of the series? I sure hope not! Beck has finally been licensed as a PI and has gotten her first big case. Her roommate from Freshman year of college called her to investigate the untimely death of her father. He was set to meet his lawyer to make up a new will but was found dead of an apparent suicide. With some many people standing to inherit millions who is to blame? Was it Jacqueline or her twin? Maybe their younger brother? Was it the wife who was about to cut off or maybe her son? With so many people to look into Beck definitely has a lot of work ahead of her. Add to that a budding romance with Devon. Are they dating informally? Will they become exclusive? If you liked the other books in this series you will definitely like this one as well.

This was a brilliant read. I’ve read books by this author previously but I think this is definitely my favourite so far. I was completely gripped and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I loved that I felt like I was right in the middle of this crime thriller trying to work out what had happened and who had done what. The author did an amazing job at keeping the suspense going the whole way through the story. This is the second book in the series and I read it easily as a standalone however with how excellent it was and I’m definitely going to grab the first and I’m looking forward to the next book!

An Inheritance to Die For is the fourth stand-alone book of the Cozy Mystery series by Judy Moore. As a person who hasn’t had the chance to read the previous books in the series (yet!), Ms. Moore has done a truly excellent job of creating a stand-alone installment. This fast-paced read follows Beck as she heads to Miami to investigate the death of her former roommates father. The characters are intriguing and introduced in such a way that readers can develop their own theories as we follow Beck through the quagmire of clues. This is a perfect read if you enjoy a nice mystery.

An Inheritance to Die For is the fourth book in the Cozy Mysteries To Die For series by Judy Moore. As I have mentioned before, I really love a great cozy mystery, and Ms. Moore doesn’t disappoint with intriguing storylines, murder, crime & investigation, drama, suspense, danger, intrigue, family, friendship, and interesting, quirky characters.
This story is very well developed and well-woven- with lots of clever touches that kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen and how everything would be tied up at the end. And as with the other books in the series, Ms. Moore cleverly built the suspense and tension- holding my attention the whole way through the story.
We follow Beck to Miami, as she endeavors to help her college roommate figure out a suspicious suicide that leaves millions of dollars at stake. What happens makes for a great read.
Looking forward to Book #5!

This cozy mystery was definitely an interesting one. When I first read the title I wasn’t sure it was for me but after reading the synopsis and looking at the beautiful colors in the cover I decided to give it a shot. The cast of characters are quirky and everyone is mysterious in their own way. But that’s not all this cozy mystery had it was also full of adventure, drama, humor and so much more. While I have never read anything by this author before I will definitely be looking for more.

An Inheritance to Die For is the fourth book in the Cozy Mysteries To Die For series. I was delighted to see a new book in this series. For those who haven’t read the previous books, this can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading the earlier books first. Beck is excited to be on the case again. This time it takes her to Miami and the family upheaval of a former college roommate.
I enjoyed this book as I had the earlier books in the series. This one deals with relationships and how they can influence perceptions and events. I liked seeing how Beck has grown and how she is coming into her own. It was also interesting to see some people who knew Beck while in school versus those who know her now. I look forward to reading more in this series and author in the future.

Having read and enjoyed the previous books in this series I was looking forward to this fourth novel, and I was not disappointed. It was lovely being back with Beck O’Rourke, who feels like an old friend now, and I enjoyed following alongside her as she traveled to Miami, to investigate the possible suicide or murder of her college roommate’s father. It was also great being back at the now much loved setting of the ‘Beach Reads’ bookstore and café, “a block off the ocean in quaint Manatee Beach, Florida”. Beck is taking on her first paid job as a private investigator, following three successful murder investigations as an amateur. For this investigation Beck has to enter her spoiled freshman roommate’s privileged world and meet her fractured family, to discover if the death of Benjamin Greene, who’s heirs stand to inherit millions from his death was a suicide or in fact murder.

Beck believes his death the night before he was meeting with his lawyer, to change his will, may be more than a coincidence. Alongside Beck are regulars Miss Alice, her spirited grandmother, her feisty lifeguard sister Lizzie, and Beck’s love interest, Police detective Devon Mathis. Another gripping cozy mystery crime story in this enjoyable and engaging series, which had me hooked from start to finish. The characters are so well defined they feel like old friends and the descriptive narrative brings the settings vividly to life. I look forward to book five and being back with Beck once more!

Fallen Star (The Divine Devils Book 2) by R Weir

Fallen Star is the second book in The Divine Devils Series and a wonderfully written Crime Thriller that is extremely hard to put down. I’m a fan of this author and his style of writing along with his pretty straightforward characters make for a intense read at times. I found myself on the edge of my seat trying to figure out the next move. This is packed with action , suspense drama crime and so much more. The storyline flowed so well that I got caught up in the pages and read half the night . I do highly recommend reading the first book if you haven’t already started it. Its just as good as this one and you get to know the characters and what’s been going on. Hunter and his team are back and this time they are investigating what starts out as a blackmail case but it seems the deeper they dig the more they find. They find themselves in a dangerous situation that includes, drugs,prostitution and murder. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.

An Inheritance to Die For is the fourth book in the Cozy Mysteries To Die For series, which centres around bookshop owner Beck O’Rourke who has by this stage been involved in solving enough murders that she’s qualified as a private investigator. The books work fine as standalones, but it’s fun to read the whole series and get to know the characters like grandmother Alice, beach bum Scratchoff and dishy detective Devon.
In this book, Beck is summoned to Maine by an old college roommate who is convinced her father’s apparent suicide is anything but. Beck must work out whether Jacqueline is simply struggling with her grief and deep-seated dislike of her stepmother, or whether there’s actually substance to her suspicions.
This is an entertaining read! We join Beck as she grapples with the intense personalities and complicated relationships of a privileged family she thought she’d never have to see again. There are plenty of clues and twists to keep readers guessing who really killed Mr Greene, and why.
At the same time, Beck is trying to work out where her relationship with Devon is going. He seems keen to spend time with her, but always leaves it until the last minute to organise anything. Does that mean he’s not serious about her?
This is a lovely series for fans of cozy mysteries. Great characters, a wonderful coastal setting and a light tone (in spite of the high mortality rate…). I’d recommend reading the full series but you can absolutely start here if you’d prefer! It gets five stars from me.
