Grave Digger Academy is the first book in this series by C.A. King, the story followed Makayla, the youngest child of a very successful magical lineage who is ready to start her first day at the magical academies. Makayla is not the same as her brothers, who are all very accomplished in their areas, and she ends up at the Grave Digger Academy, the least respected of the magical schools. Not everything is as it seems at her new school however, the teaching staff refuse to talk about certain subjects, and she feels that there is something sinister lurking in the shadows. This was a fun novel and did well at introducing the different characters in the new magical world. I enjoyed it, would recommend to younger readers who like the paranormal genre.

A witch’s placement in one of their chosen academies is an important day. What they don’t want to find is that they have been assigned to the Grave Digger academy. Makayla, who already feels like an outcast when it comes to looks and magical affinities when it comes to her family, is really hoping to get into one of her first choices. But, when she wakes up and sees no notice from an academy, she has a feeling that this isn’t going to end the way she wants it to.
After an eventful trek to her new campus, she quickly learns that everything at Grave Digger Academy is not as it seems. She quickly finds herself under the watchful eye of those in charge because she has more questions than answers…and she just keeps asking them. When a bout of boredom leads her wanting to take a trip into town, Makayla finds herself in a situation that begins to shed light on what is really going on….but also allows her to learn more about herself than her parents (or any teacher) ever told her. But…not that she knows…what is she going to do about it?!?
This story moved quickly through a year at Grave Digger Academy. There is a lot of information about the witching world given…and a lot of questions left unanswered. I found myself invested in Makayla’s situation and am interested in finding out what happens next.

Another great book in the series. This time the group comes together for the Inter-Academy games. What could go wrong? The students are forced to find their inner strengths and their bond with their helpers. You can feel the growth in the students and their confidence in themselves. I really enjoyed seeing those who were thought to be from the lessor school overcome the tasks at hand and show that they are also a force to be wrecken with but can also come together to save those in need. Overall, a fun quick read.

Grave Digger Academy is an exciting take on the paranormal ongoing. C.A. King transports you to a world of a young lady, Mikayla, who is 1 of 7 siblings and is the outcast, odd ball, misfit, etc. She doesn’t look like her family but hopes to follow in her siblings footsteps by attending one of the schools they attended. To her surprised, she’s selected for a school that wasn’t on her list: Grave Digger Academy. Of course she’s upset having to go to a school she didn’t want to attend, but she quickly makes friends and starts adventures and stories beyond what she could’ve imagined.

Break The Darkness is book 2.5 in the YA fantasy Vigilant series. This is another part of Rei’s story. Make sure to read the books in order. This book answers some questions and brings the story together much better than the previous books.
As with the others it is fast-paced and action packed. It is a paranormal story mixed with fantasy and science fiction. Lots of emotions – heartbreak, hope, secrets, suspense, betrayal, mystery, love and sacrifice in a world full of magic and werewolves. .
Some twists and turns and still a few more mysteries left to be answered.
Mythology and mystery, danger and supernatural/paranormal beings, magic and more that I am sure that any YA fantasy lover will enjoy.

Grave Digger Academy II is a good YA paranormal fantasy. I said it with the first book but this book has more of a Harry Potteresque feel to it as the students line up to win the inter-academy face off. I love that the series is fun and light hearted.
Young Witches, death, graves, deadly games and the adventure begins. The story flows nicely and is excitingly intriguing with delightful characters. There are still so many layers to be explored and revealed that looks exciting.
Makayla is back for her second year at the Grave Digger Academy and finds there is still so much more to the Academy. An Academy with lots of secrets and things that are hidden within the grounds and in the darkness.

Grave Digger Academy II by C.A. King follows on from Grave Digger Academy and continues the intriguing adventures. It is a fantastic YA paranormal fantasy with plenty of mystery, action, tension, intrigue, and dramatic developments. As we discovered in Book One, Makayla didn’t want to attend Grave Digger Academy, but didn’t exactly have a choice. She soon discovers that there was definitely more to Grave Digger Academy than she expected. In this instalment Makayla is about to start her second year, and after what happened in Book One, things are off to an interesting start. With an inter-academy challenge thrown into the mix, there’s plenty of tension in the air, while bringing a huge dose of the unexpected – and so the supernatural adventure begins. Another fun read! This installment has a ton of HP vibes, especially with the flying car and the competition among the schools. I enjoyed the story and the character development. You get to know more about the main cast of characters in this book, which was interesting. I particularly liked the scenes with the helper/familiars and the addition to that group. As with the first book, I liked that the author doesn’t put in a bunch of fluff. The story is right to the point with no unnecessary detours. Quick read. Excellent follow up to the first book.

I can not wait to read books 2 and 3!!! I LOVED this book! I love most supernatural books, but I love seeing the character’s at a young point and then watching them grow. In this book we are talking about academy age. So your reading about young witches and different skills they can have or already do. Just like everything you have to learn the skills you are meant to have and then develop them. Makalya is entering her first year of the paranormal academy system, but first she must pick where to go! She gets three choices and if none of those accept her, she goes to the back up academy that no one EVER picks themselves! When she gets no word on the first day of school she has to find her own way with a slip from the library. Talk about a crazy adventuress first day! She’s thrown into a sink or swim maze to find where she needs to be. Unfortunately all three of her picks didn’t accept her and when she finds her path it is right to Grave Digger Academy!! All of her other six siblings went to great top schools. What is she to do, being the first of the family to be put into the worst of the worst!?? She hears of a way out of the school and being transferred to another school, but there is no way she will ever earn the top of the top marks in a curriculum that she’s not even interested in learning! She has more than one scolding about her interests, but looking for answers about illegal witchcraft and her being the seventh born are at the top of her priorities right now. As school progresses she’s half learning about grave diggers and what they do, but it’s not until she is thrown into a bet with another student that she wishes she paid more attention! Something is off at the Gave Digger Academy and she’s only just beginning to learn some of it. Will she make it through the year? Does she even want to, when she has to face her family once she returns home?! With the crazy start to the year, how will the year end? I believe Rei is my favorite in this series. She’s small but packs a punch. She uses her size to make people forget that she is powerful. She observes a lot while investigating the weird stuff going on in the new town she and her family have moved to. Once she gets herself involved on the school newspapers, she’s sticking her nose in where it may nto belong. This story is full of punch, drama, adventure, and teen angst with some paranornal thrown in. I love it. One of my favorite teen paranormal series, this can be read as a standalone. I do recommend the series read. The characters are so realistic and relatable. I love the plot, so teenager like, even with the paranormal in it. Rei is a pretty badass young woman. Well done!

I enjoyed this quick read about a girl that finds herself at a magical school. It had elements that reminded me of the Mortal Instruments, Harry Potter, or House of Night vibes. It was magical with a hint of dark lore and I loved that the undead was a part of the story as well. This was definitely a fun, easy-to-read book that left me wanting to read the next book to answer some of my questions.

This book was amazing as I knew it would be! It had intrigue, and action, and danger, and fascinating facts on the characters as you read through! The book truly held its own!
I love reading this series. This story was about Rei and her story. It was a great tie in, it cleared up a lot of things, explained the whole Meghan working thing. I thought it was a great addition to the series, and really made me connect with Rei as well I loved the intrigue, the history that became history that was Rei I mean. The story had great character build up and suspense. Secrets were put into the open and a lot of things that I wondered about came to light! Really enjoyed this! I loved it from start to finish!
I simply just love this series. The author does such an amazing job. I very much enjoyed this installment/as well as tie in to the story! This is a high recommendation for this must read! I do suggest to start with book 1 in the series, as you will be very much able to follow through with the books and characters.

Enjoyable novella This is a great instalment in The Vigilant series. This is between book 2 and 3 and we get to know Rei and how she ended up working with Megan. There are events that occur that need the perspective from reading previous books in the series so it is best to read from book 1. With mystery, action, a little bit of romance and secrets uncovered, this is an exciting treat. Looking forward to see where this story goes.

Kara is the focus of this book, while the other characters from this series also receive highlights throughout. Kara is coming of age and her mother and uncle are trying to find her a suitor. She’s not having the ones they are presenting and decides to run away. It’s the adventures that she faces that we read about in this story. Cub and Thornfinn’s stories are also further developed. There is a lot of action with both of these boys involving trolls, witches, and more! I enjoyed this book and the series so far. I do get a little bogged down in the multitude of characters introduced. Sometimes it’s difficult for me to keep them straight. This book also talks about certain characters at a time but their stories don’t necessarily always meet up with each other. I have a hard time staying focused on what’s happening with everyone with all the switching back and forth. If you enjoy stories about Vikings, this series is for you!

This is my second book from Wickstrom on this Mermaid and I fell in love all over again! This mermaid story takes to new discoveries using a cup, paper, cardboard, and a mirror. Such simple, everyday objects that young children can use for great scientific exploration! It is also a great story showing how a pair of human girls and a mermaid can share their knowledge and share what they know with one another to discover something new and exciting. I’ve been so personally intrigued by these stories as a parent and an educator on how you can take such a popular character, a mermaid, and throw in the mix of scientific exploration with everyday items. It is such an important time for young children to harness that youthful discovery and imagination so this sense of inquiry can expand into their adulthood as they set their own path into the world. When a story can encompass the ability of exploration, it provides excitement and continued interest in the field. I would definitely recommend this story as well to families and educators of young children.

I really enjoyed this book. The premise was interesting. The characters were easy to connect to. Loved the helper/familiar character additions. A big bonus for me is that you get enough information about what’s going on, without a bunch of extraneous details. It keeps things right to the point of the story without a ton of fluff. This story doesn’t end on a cliffhanger per se, but it does leave you with questions that will make you want to keep reading the series. If you want a quick, entertaining read, check out this story!

I am truly in love with this world and the characters LM Preston has created the intricacy in which characters from books, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 are consistent. They were introduced in one and each book you learn more things about them that were not known in the previous books. I have read the previous 3 books in this series so far, the 2 from EmVee and now both from Dexter. Once again, the half book Unbreakable Darkness is not required to read before Scepter of Fire, but it helps fill in a lot of the story and plot points. This book picks up where Unbreakable Darkness ends.
Dex remembers the car accident, the family car going off the bridge and hitting the water. He worked to get his siblings free of their seatbelts starting with his older sister EmVee, her friend Kayson appears and pulls her from the water, and then darkness. Waking up in a hospital room held down by chains, he overhears people talking about the hospital is going to be coming down. A doctor comes in and informs him that his older sister and father are on the same floor as him but that they couldn’t save everyone. His goal becomes clear, get his sister out of the hospital. Seeing Kayson, the memories return he pushes him into EmVee’s room and tells him he must get his sister out of the hospital now, and the window is the only option. Kayson is shocked saying they are on the 6th floor when Dex says, “You go this, you’re different. I see it in you.” With a nod Dex leaves, surprises the guards with his strength for a “human” before he is hit with a dart in the neck. Trey, Dex’s elite initiation friend that he saves is bringing him food, in his cell, he attempts to escape and is stabbed by a dagger made from the Scepter Stone. Suddenly a month has passed, Dex gets some cellmates, and mysterious cocoon that Trey reveals is a girl, and a silver haired Siphoner that has escaped from 3 different holding locations. A gift from Trey, befriend him and he will get him and the girl out. But the ultimate shock is learning that the Void is not on Earth. Everyone that was human at one point was stolen from Earth to be the test subjects of a scientist named Sybil.
Will Dex succeed in his mission to be free again? Who is the girl in the cocoon and what makes the Siphoner the most dangerous experiment? The author is not telling the same story over and over again she is enhancing the story, adding layers to it with each new perspective that fills in the holes of the previous point of view.

Dexter has been a pawn for long enough. He has always been tortured and abused for the sins of his father, but not anymore. Dex is a really great addition to the series. L.M. Preston is growing to be one of my favorite authors, I can’t wait for the next book.

I only have one word for this book, AMAZING!!!! This is a semi new author to me but so far this is my favorite novel by our author and currently my favorite read for September. Wouldn’t it be great if every wish you made came true? But what do you do when your wish goes haywire? This amazing, and gritty ya fantasy novel is just that. Our author is descriptive, the characters are amazing and unique, and the story as a whole is original and we’ll put together. So if your looking for a new fantasy novel make sure you pick this one up today.
I very much enjoyed this coming of age, YA, fantasy book with a dark twist and a side of murder. I enjoyed the characters and the relationships between them. I got a Harry Potter vibe from the 3 main characters, Baxter and his two friends Jason and Ashley. Baxter and Jason are best friends, who end up befriending Ashley who is the know it all at school and who they previously didn’t like. But when Baxter accepts the ring and unleashes his own Djinn, a type of genie, he is going to need some help in figuring it all out. I loved how all of the characters interacted with one another, and even though it was a fantasy book, the actions of the characters, felt natural and realistic. I really loved the relationship between Bax and his mom as well. The author did a great job with the character developments and how they matured and grew. Just as we think things are beginning to get wrapped up, the author throws another curve ball into the mix. This is a great novel for both teens and adults who enjoy fantasy with a dark twist.
This was a really good quick read. I get Harry Potter vibes but with a twist. Makayla ends up at the school no one wants to attend, herself included. What she soon finds out, she is there for a reason. This fast paced magical book packs a punch in only 150 pages with the ending leaving you wa ting more. I felt for her as she made and lost friends, as she feared for her life, and as she sought out hope. There were parts that I felt it sped through but for a short book, did a great job. Can’t wait to read the 2nd book.

We’ve always been told that you can’t be too careful with your wishes. But how many of us have actually had to learn the lesson, especially when you’re in a dire situation? This book contains everything you want in a YA paranormal fantasy, and you can tell this author is one to watch.
Taking a ring from a strange looking man doesn’t seem like a bad idea when you’re a young teenager, but Bax changed his life when he just that. Now he will have to decipher what’s real versus what’s imagination which is no easy task with djinn against you. Will he be strong enough to resist the powerful djinn that appeals to him, or will he give in to temptation no matter the cost? With magic, mythology, murder, and tough lessons, this book was impossible to put down. I’m a huge fan of the YA genre and highly recommend From Brick & Darkness!
Dexter is one of four kids, he lived with them and their parents up until they moved to the Void and ever since it seems that trouble has been finding him jo matter how hard he tries to keep on the straight and narrow. This leads to a bit of friction between him and his dad and they couldn’t see eye to eye, but all that changed when they tried to leave and before he knew it, Dexter was on his own.
However, albeit he is away from his family, he is not alone, thanks to something his father did, Dexter is now feeling like a pawn in a whole new game, but this one involves torture and imprisonment, but the things he hears between sessions are what keeps him up at night. This is as well as the nightmares fuelled by the loss of someone precious to him, as well as past events which changed him beyond recognition.
This carries on for a while, until he is no longer alone, two prisoners join him and they hatch a plan to escape, but things never go as planned for Dexter and now he has to his hide himself from them, as well as those who wish to use him for their own gain. The joke is on them though as Dexter has learned more about the Void than he lets on, he knows there are magical there and he knows who is in charge as well as what they want, he also knows that they should have let his family go.
What they don’t know is that Dexter is determined to become a Vigilant and find his family, but will he be able to keep his feelings in check long enough to carry out his mission? This is a paranormal urban fantasy where nothing is as it seems and danger lies around every corner and in every shadow. It is an addictive story which you will not want to put down until you know how it ends.

Makayla is not sure what school she will be chosen too, there are so many options in the paranormal academy but the one no one wants is the Grave Digger Academy. I thought this was really good. I felt for Makayla, she is trying to find her footing and with a bunch of older siblings to live up to it is even more pressure added on her. Well written and was one you kept reading until the very end.

BOOK TWO! Dexter’s life is a mess. He is separated from his family and his best friend is dead. He finds out that he has been living in The Void, kind of like the regular world but not. Mortals are not aware that they aren’t where they think they are. Dexter is trying his hardest to right wrongs and stay alive. Through many challenges, he just wants to become free and save his family and friends. This was a good read, action packed, supernatural beings, and testing oneself. Please read the first books of the series!

Bax has been waiting for an adventure his whole life. As it’s just him and his mother, he spends a lot of time with his best friend playing video games. He also frequents the comic book shop, as in a way to be close to his dad. When a mysterious man gives him a purple ring, the life Bax knew is changed. Go on this fantasy ride that also is dark and twisty. What a great read.
Well this went a way I did not think it would..it is a but darker than I expected. It says its a teen adult story but I would lean more toward adult. This covers a few topics that are a bit much, in my opinion, for teens. I struggled when reading late at night with the visuals this projected. I felt sorry for Bax multiple times. He is young kid who gets into trouble and all he wants is for it to stop or to figure out how to quit. He is curious as all kids are and it got him into a bit of trouble.
Overall its a good story that mostly kept my interest. It really picked up towards the end and of course I was glued to it then. I would recommend this for an older crowd and for people who like a little darkness mixed in with the story.
Dexter didn’t like being a pawn. It seems life was taking him there though. He and his father never saw eye to eye, but being captured and tortured for his father’s mistakes gave Dexter too much to think about. First, the girl he lost; he’d never forget what they did to her. It changed him, and made him see the small city where his father moved him was a prison for magicals, the damned, and now him. Too bad, the creator of the Void didn’t realize they would be better off if they’d set him free, because now he was fighting for his life, and someone he’d have to hide his feelings from to protect, not just from those that want to drag them back, but from himself—a vigilant. Each book in this series seems to get better and better. I found it so easy to slip straight back into this world, as if I had just carried on reading. I would definitely recommend reading this series in order as each book is a continuation and you would miss out on a lot of details. I love the way the author is building up these stories over the course of the series. It feels like she is building toward something and I can’t wait to see what that could be. I enjoy these characters each time I read about them. I feel like, with each book, we get pulled more and more into their journey. This is another great addition to this series and I can’t wait to see what is next.
