Denial (Hero High Book 1) by Mina Chara – Review by Faith Jackson

Denial (Hero High Book 1)Denial by Mina Chara
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve enjoyed this young adult genre more than most teens I know or young adults. In this futuristic mystery, we go into the world of Icon City, a haven for one percenters. You instantly fall in love with the characters, especially the main character who has a powerful personality which is set to inspire the readers.
She’s fully aware of her personality which brings her great strengths in a lot of ways plus she’s aware of her surroundings and how it affects her.
In this fantasy, she used to be a “normal” 17-year-old girl until her dad found out she had superpowers and shipped her off to a famous school for powered people of the world — Hero High.
At Hero High, she lives in the SuperStructure where cameras follow her every move. People with powers have just as many expectations on them as humans do with the pressures they succumb themselves to. Through this she’s making money for the family and she’s starting to see the place for what it is.
She is us as we’re along for the ride with her as she takes on the role of hero as she attempts to discover the identity of an unknown villain and their intentions with the school. She’s a selfless hero in for the ride no matter the consequences.
Great adventure with mysteries. Fun read full of action-packed pages full of unpredictable twists and turns. Very fun to get through.

Yet again another wonderfully detailed and creative book from this author! I have really enjoyed the series so far so was looking forward to the newest instalment and I wasn’t disappointed at all. Fingin’s story was really fun and interesting to read – I thought I knew what was going to happen but there were some nice twists in the story which kept me hooked from beginning to end. I loved the adventure and magic in the story I was easily lost in what I was reading. The authors writing never fails to transport me in to the world in which she is writing about – fantastic world and character building!
Lovers of fantasy reads will not go wrong by reading this book and the series! I highly recommend this vividly detailed read to everybody!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fantasy isn’t a genre I typically read but the blurb kind of jumped out at me so I decided to give the book a go and I really enjoyed it. It was nice to go into a story without any real expectations, I didn’t know whether it would enjoy it or not – but I am glad that I decided to read it. I really enjoyed the authors writing, I found I was easily drawn in to what I was reading – the world building I found to be particularly good! Detailed and vivid! The characters were so different to what I usually read and I really enjoyed their uniqueness – I could tell the author had spent a lot of time planning their development and how they would evolve over the story!
I would definitely recommend this book and I am definitely looking forward to reading more from the author again in the future!

This is the second book that I have read by this author and again it was another great read. The genre of this story isn’t one of my favourites but I love finding new authors and I enjoyed the first book in the series so thought I would give the second one a try. I can see an improvement in the authors writing as well (not that his debut novel was bad it definitely wasn’t) but as with most authors the more they write improvements are noticed!
I loved the detailed writing of the setting of the story it really enabled me to imagine what was happening in the story. The characters were really well developed and I really liked the relationship that they had between them, they were all really relatable in my opinion. The rich and complex storyline kept my interest throughout! Overall I thought that this was a wonderful read and a great addition to the series! I will definitely be looking out for more from this author in the future!

This is quite an adventure. Filled with wizards, Magic and Excalibur is a retelling of a classic. While the story drew me in I struggled with the timeline of the characters. It is confusing to me and makes the story not flow very smoothly. Causing me to lose interest at times. I plugged on and the story does pick up near the end. The main character held my interest and wondering what would happen to him and the sword. There are few secondary characters who I liked and others not so much.

I give P.A.W.S. (The P.A.W.S. Saga Book 1) by Debbie Manber Kupfer, 5 stars.

I will admit, I was recommended this book by the author a couple years ago as something I may like in an event, purchased it, then unfortunately forgot about. My TBR list is huge and I can stop buying. Anyway, I finally got the opportunity to read it and I can’t believe I waited so long. I would say this is a teen book, but as an adult, I enjoyed it immensely. As a cat lover, this is what drew me in and I really like Miri as a main character. She feels alone and not quite understood, but she learns more about herself and steps up when she needs to. It does have a feel of being inspired by the Harry Potter books, but the author makes it her own in the types of characters and the world she creates. There are so many other characters I am dying to learn more of as the series goes on. Then there is the story itself. Miri feels like an outcast and all alone. Most people, especially teenagers, can relate to this. She is finally able to find a place she feels more comfortable, but events happen that do not make it as easy as it seems.

If you like a world of magic and fantastic creatures and people in a young adult/teenage age group, this book is for you.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutely loved reading this one and I don’t care that it’s for young adults because at 32, I love a good read and this was definitely that.
We follow Brigit in college but she has to do something to prove her innocence and she’s totally bad-ass at doing it as she does things her way.
Someone has falsely accused her of doing detest actions that don’t fit her character and she’s out to clear her name to the university.
Even worse, as a fairy, she owes a debt to her doppleganger as she has to unravel what’s leering in the library. Whatever it is, it’s haunting the books she loves which is all the ammunition she needs to put an end to this thing’s reign of terror. Since the administration at the university, Brigit and her friends will do what they must to put an end to it.
Brigit’s friends have unique gifts of their own to unravel the mysteries before them which makes this book juicier. Logan can recognize the truth within the blink of an eye and gamer girl Emma may know more than she’s letting on. The ghosts of the school are even on the side of the good but the evil force may be way more powerful than they initially thought.

A Study in Spirits by Byrd Nash is the second book in A College Fae Magic series. The author says there will be four books in the series, one for each year of school. This is a fairly short, quick read but the author accomplishes a lot in those pages. In this book Brigit has been accused of stealing answers and vandalism. With her friends she must clear her name or be expelled from school. I enjoyed the characters of Brigit and Logan as well as the secondary characters in the story. This is a nice get away from the day to day isolation from being at home giving out a bit of magic to all of us. I look forward to reading more in this series.

A Study in Spirits (College Fae book #2) by Byrd Nash. This is the second book in this series and I think it’s even better than the first. I’m not a huge fantasy fan but these books are the exception. I loved the first one and I believe I loved this one even more. Its the continuing story of Brigit who is a student at Leopold Otto University and if she wants to continue to be a student there she needs to prove that she is not the person stealing & changing test results. With her friend Logan and his ability to recognize the truth and their new friend Emma who may hold the key to the whole mystery they are determined to find solve this. This monster is destroying Brigit’s much loved books and she is determined to stop it not only to prove herself not guilty but to catch this horrible culprit. We meet some new friends as well in this book and they definitely add to the story. Will these monsters prove to difficult to stop or will Brigit and Logan be able to stop them before its too late? Read A Study in Spirits to find out!

This is a full length fantasy. Written for the coming of age romance readers.

Welcome to the School for the Power People. Hero High provides all the things the students need. This is a different type of school you are used to. These high school students are told what to wear, as the school provides the clothes. The students are followed around by cameras and are told who they are to date. That being the case, they are paid for this. Good or bad the money is to help out their families. That is all I will tell you! No spoilers!

Mina Chara has written this Fantasy Adventure. I love the characters in this story. But most of all I feel as though I am right there beside the teens. This book is loaded with action and will keep you reading. Although it is written for teens and young adults, I feel anybody could read it. This gives you a chance to discuss this book with your teens, open communication is always GREAT. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, as well as discussing it with my teenager. Well Done Mina Chara!

This is the 2nd book in the series and what an adventure. Like the first book it is a multi-level story so you need to keep on the ball as the different stories happen and twist together.

There are 2 different treasure hunts happening both with different outcomes.

The reptilian humanoids are searching for something to make their new weapon work. And the 3 college students, Matt, Dan and Julie are set out to learn ancient skills all centred about unity and the belief anything is possible if you are a united front.

Matt is the Ancient One and his role in all this is to safe earth. Will he and his friends learn the skills they need in time or will the other treasure hunters reach their goal first.

Its a great adventure full of twists and turns. Really well written and gripping from the first page.

Journeys Through TimeSpace (Journeys Through Book 2) by James Talisman – Review by Karyn Taylor

Journeys Through TimeSpaceJourneys Through TimeSpace by James Talisman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Journeys Through TimeSpace is the second book in the Journeys Through series by James Talisman. Journeys Through is an epic series set in the MultiVerse. The first book in the series, Journeys Through SpaceTime was Talisman’s debut novel and I was blown away by how in depth and detailed the books was. I had been eagerly looking forward to reading the next instalment and I was not disappointed at all. It is a fantastic continuation of the story.
The book can be seen as a fight between good and evil but it is so much more. I loved reading about Matt, Julie and Dan and their journey, both physically and spiritually. The friendship and camaraderie between the 3 is fantastic. You really can’t help rooting for the 3 of them to succeed in their mission. This is also helped as the ‘bad guys’ are really nasty, horrid and evil so you really can’t help but want them to fail. I’ve said before that one mark of a great writer, for me, is by how much they get you to hate the bad guys and I sure hated them in this book.
The characters are so well written in this book that you also can’t helped but be gripped by their story and stay hooked right up to the very end. Although, judging by the way this book ended, this story is not over yet.

Age of Secrets (Druid's Brooch: #8)Age of Secrets by Christy Nicholas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Age of Secrets is the eighth book in the Druid’s Brooch Series by Christy Nicholas. It is a fantastic fantasy- with magic, adventure, paranormal elements, drama, action, romance, family, friendship, danger, battles, obstacles, and some mystery.
I always love the attention to detail and vividly descriptive storytelling that Ms. Nicholas has proven to excel at- as it brings her stories to life and makes them very realistic, believable, and entirely captivating. I can always count on her to deliver a really well written tale. Each book in the series is fascinating in its own right, but then when you read a few, you begin to realise that each one contributes a fragment to a wonderful Tapestry. But, be prepared to have each book draw you in and get you invested in the story and characters, right from the beginning.
Fingin hasn’t had things easy, and things get even more complicated when he is sent on a quest to find his grandmother. Along with his dog Bran, and Sean the donkey- they set off on an adventure which will test them in many ways. Things don’t go quite according to plan- and things are definitely not what they seem.
If you love fantasy, lonely outcasts, magic, adventure, and wonderful animal friends- then you really shouldn’t miss this story!
This adventure is a wonderful addition to the series.

Thank you, Ms. Nicholas!

P.A.W.S is the first book in the P.A.W.S Saga series by Debbie Manber Kupfer. It is a wonderful YA paranormal fantasy, with shapeshifters, werewolves, secrets, magic, adventure, danger, violence, drama, and a sprinkle of romance. This is a journey of self-discovery, finding where you belong, friendship, and more.
This is my first read from Debbie Manber Kupfer- and I am happy I stumbled on this cute story. There was a lot to love about the book. It does have a bit of a Harry Potter-esque feel to the story, and like Harry our MC is a bit of a lonely misfit- until she finds where she ‘belongs’.
Miri’s life turns upside down when her grandmother dies, and she is shipped off to boarding school. But little does she know that this will be the start of a great adventure. From being a bit of an outcast, Miri discovers the ‘family secret’ and begins her journey to her true self. But danger is stalking her with sinister intent. What happens from here, makes for a captivating read.
Now- on to Book #2!

“Soon, weapons fire reverberated throughout the strange abyss surrounding the search team. The huge dark shadow now gave way to a massive beast that resembled a serpent as it moved into the light. Bullets from the soldiers’ weapons seemed to bounce off the skin of the monster bearing an enormous mouth lined with more razor-sharp teeth than could be counted. Fear gripped everyone as the behemoth with green glowing eyes raised itself up over twenty feet in the air and made another guttural sound…..”

‘Journeys Through TimeSpace’ is the second instalment in the ‘Journeys Through’ series by James Talisman. This is a sci-fi/fantasy adventure story which, like the first book, has quite a lot going on in it, as well as a lot of characters to keep track of. Again, the storyline is multi-layered and complex taking the reader on an action-packed adventure on a quest for treasure. It’s a thought provoking read- exploring ideas on consciousness, relativity, spirituality, time travel, the universe/multiverse, and more.
I enjoyed the first book and so I was intrigued to read this second instalment to see where this journey would take us. As this is the second instalment in the series, and there are a lot of recurring characters, as well as an over-arching storyline, I really recommend reading book one before embarking on this journey. Having all the backstory, character introductions and other important information contained in the first book will greatly enhance your reading experience of this story.
I am curious to see what Mr. Talisman has in store for us next.

Thank you, Mr. Talisman!

A Study in Spirits: A College Fae Magic Series #2 by Byrd Nash is the follow on from Never Date a Siren. It is a wonderful Young Adult story full of paranormal beings, college life, humour, drama, debts, bonds, challenges, lessons, magic, danger, adventure, and more.

Why, oh why haven’t I discovered Ms. Murphy’s books before now? I am kicking myself for missing out all this time!!!
Summer Princess is the first book in the Dark Fae series by Sloane Murphy. I loved this story, and absolutely can not wait for the release of Book #2. I don’t know if it is even been written yet- but I am willing to camp out in the author’s yard just to get snippets as they come!!! And don’t get me started on the ending- OMG!!! The mother of all cliff-hanger’s…. I definitely didn’t see that coming. SO well woven, and cleverly crafted!!! Well played Ms. Murphy! Well Played indeed!
I must admit that it took me a little bit to warm to Emilia as she irked me somewhat in the beginning. But I soon found myself caught up in the story, following along avidly- and on “team Amelia” all the way!
This is definitely darker than I expected- even with the hint in the form of the series title “Dark Fae”- I still didn’t catch on lol. The darker elements gave this story added intrigue- and made for riveting reading. I so want to divulge everything in this book that caught my attention and had me so engrossed- but I really don’t want to spoil it for you. All I can say is that if you love a great fantasy story- with interesting characters, a riveting storyline- and cleverly crafted intrigue, and twists and turns- then you really don’t want to miss out on reading this book!!!
Bring on Book #2!!!
Now to explore the rest of Ms. Murphy’s work while I wait…

Thank you, Sloane Murphy!

I give A Study in Spirits: A College Fae magic series #2 by Byrd Nash, 5 stars.

The first book in this series was so much fun and I anxiously awaited the next one. Well, it passed the grade and then some. The book was outstanding! Sticking with the same group of characters from book 1, there is also an addition of another character to their group who is just as interesting and I would love to see more of in the future. The characters are so great because they work together so well and all have kindness to others in their heart. Albeit different and not always on the same page, they work together to help those in need. This time, the focus is something evil in the library. The way they go about solving everything is so interesting and you just can’t put the book down. The story is entertaining and fun, the characters are real but not too pretentious, and there is of course a talking cat, which just pushes it over the edge for me.

If you are a fan of college aged main characters in an urban fantasy setting, this book is for you.

Age of Secrets (Druid's Brooch: #8)Age of Secrets by Christy Nicholas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I give Age of Secrets (The Druid’s Brooch Series 8) by Christy Nicholas, 5 stars.

If you have been reading the series, you have been following the path of the brooch and what powers the current owner of the brooch gains. The powers Fingin gains are my favorite so far and this book itself is my favorite in the series. I really like Fingin. He has had to endure so much in his life, but he doesn’t seem to have a moment’s peace. Just when he thinks he has settled down to a normal life, he is sent on a journey that is both treacherous and thrilling. He learns how much more there is to life and what he really wants out of it. The author has yet again woven a fantastic world set in Ireland, long before it was known as such. She does a perfect job of making you feel like you are there. The secondary characters just add more flavor into the mix. They are not necessarily your normal secondary characters, but you will love them all the same. And this book, it just wouldn’t fit in the series if there wasn’t some magic in it. Well, Fingin gets to experience more than he ever imagined. But he stays strong through everything. He has a big heart and cares about his friends, he must endure for them. But just how much can he take?

If you are a fan of a magical series with strong characters on a journey of a lifetime, this book and series is for you. It can be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading them all since they are so good.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I give Journeys Through TimeSpace (Journeys Through Book 2) by James Talisman, 5 stars.

This book is incredible. We pick up the characters from book one and see how their stories advance. Each of them continue to grow and it is interesting to see how they all progress. It is obvious that each one truly commits to their beliefs. Then there is the story itself. You have multiple settings involving multiple sets of characters. The author does a wonderful job of keeping them all interesting and cohesive. Although the book jumps back and forth, it is quite easy to pick up where these characters left off. The worlds the author created are phenomenal and make you feel like you are there. There were some that I would love to be a part of in real life. There are many little surprises thrown in too that make it an even more interesting read. I really enjoyed read this series, it is nothing like I have read before. As a bonus, it really makes you stop and possibly look at the world in a different way. These characters take nothing for granted.

This book is the second in the series and really should be read after book one. If you are a fan of epic science fiction this book and series are for you.
