Edge of your seat thriller
Emotional, confronting and brutal at times, this book is not for the light hearted. The author holds nothing back and has produced a brilliant story that holds the reader captive from start to finish. I didn’t even realise I was holding my breath for most of the book. The plot is well developed and deals with confronting issues with sensitivity. The emotional vulnerability of PTSD bleeds through the pages. A must read.

This book was deeply intense and emotional. It told a story that was very real and realistic. PTSD is all to common and not spoken about enough, and this story sheds light and facts associated with it.
Sgt. JP Grimm pulled at my heart strings watching his struggle and the ones he loved try to help him through. A man living each day with guilt and remorse until he decides he and his pistol might get a taste of each other. Emotionally I was not prepared for this story, but its a book I would 100% pick up again.

This book by Jacob Paul Patchen is unlike any I’ve ever read. It really takes you into the life of someone who suffers from PTSD due to their time at war.Not only that but it shows what the family goes through also. Be warned this will make you feel a range of strong emotions right alongside the characters. This author is extremely good at emerging you into the world he has created. I will definitely be checking out his other works.

FABULOUS story—the reader will feel all the feels. Emotional roller coaster that had my heartbreaking for everyone involved with JP! LOVED the light that this book shone on PTSD and what it does to a person who is suffering.

On deployment, Marine Sargent JP Grimes, had formed an unbreakable bond with the marines within his unit. War is awful and day in & day out, these people end up being closer sometimes than your family bonded together by blood. A moment of hesitation, will change Grimes life forever, as he was unable to shoot the child who closely resembles Grimes own son. The child was a suicide bomber, who blew up Grime’s best friend, as well as the rest of his unit. As Grimes returns home to his family, the haunting memories of that fateful day are eating him alive and eventually cause him to lose even more people that he loves.
A griping, captivating novel that will have the reader crying with every turn of the page.

This author really knows how to pull on the heart strings and make you feel so much emotion that you wont know if you should love them or hate them. Being the daughter of a veteran with PTSD I knew this would be a difficult one to get through but boy am I glad I picked it up. The characters and storyline really took me on an emotional ride that made me understand this illness so much better. Not only that but this storyline was very well developed and relatable. Personally while I have never read anything by this author before I will definitely be on the lookout for more.

This story and review contains many trigger warnings and is only for those over 18 and is a heavy, but interesting read and deals with a lot of emotions and mental health related issues.

Sergeant JP Grimm is a marine, a veteran and he has a wonderful family, a wife, a son and two loving grandparents, but when he came back from war, something had changed, something was different and that something was about to tear him apart.

This story starts in a desert, a desert across the other side of the world from his home, this is where he trained, lived and laughed with his team, this is where they worked together on missions and spent their downtime together when no out on patrol, this team became like brothers to JP, but one day, while on a mission, they had almost completed their mission when a child comes out from behind a building, a child that looked so much like his own son, a child who he knew he should shoot on site, but how can you kill a child? How can you shoot down an innocent? All this went through JP’s mind and more in the instant before he saw the remote in the child’s hand and the instant before that child blew up his team members, the instant in which he didn’t pull the trigger and save them.

After recovering from the after affects of that trauma, JP returns home to his family, his son and his life, but as he tries to come to terms with everything that happens, he reacts as though he is still in that hell of a desert, surrounded by death and destruction. He tries to reconnect to that life before war, but he is struggling and so are those around him, everything reminds him of the past and he cannot shake the visions, thoughts and emotions which chase him when the sun sets until the sun rises again bringing another day of hope. However, it seems that the world is against him and is becoming embroiled in a fiery doom of its own, as the Earth’s magnetic field reduces and the sun flares increase and everything is surrounded by uncertainty.

As he spirals, JP pushes away everyone and everything he holds dear until he feels that he has nothing left, until he tastes his pistol and tastes the bourbon, but does every pistol taste the same, or are there other things that taste better? Can JP bring himself back from the brink and work through the nightmares which plague him? Will his family allow him space while giving him the support he needs, or will they leave him to fight this fight alone? As internal and external worlds spin out of control in this heavy read, you learn about PTSD and how it affects the mind and body, both increasing your knowledge, empathy and understanding, as well as being an interesting and engrossing read throughout.

This book is like pulling a rusty knife out of your heart with the way it makes you bleed and your insides churn. PTSD is a heavy topic for any author to cover and even harder to read if you know someone who has battled this disease or if you are battling this disease.

It starts out with a pistol in his mouth and traveling down a dark road that is filled with despair and gut wrenching memories. SGT Grimm returns home with some unpleasant memories and a life filled with hatred at himself for feeling guilt over feeling responsible for his friend’s and service members deaths. This is a dangerous path and walking down this alone is often hard to come back from. As if that is not enough JP must also face the impending doomsday as the Earth’s magnetic field is weakened and the flaring sun. Can JP face his nightmares and reconnect with his wife and son before he loses the chance to? Or will the darkness consume his path and join his comrades in the afterlife?

This is a heartbreaking read that isn’t all dark as we do see some happier memories flow through that mix with the sad ones. This book gives insight into what families that face PTSD go through and the thought that no one is immune. This book is magnetizing and if you get the opportunity to pick it up definitely give it a read!

Sergeant Grimm is faced with a horribly impossible split-second decision. A soldier on the war-front and now in his personal life. Dealing with PTSD, Grimm must find some way to re-enter his old life, which is now burdened with an entirely new problem. This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I didn’t want it to end! The characters and their relationships with each other are intricate and endearing. You guys, this story is so good. It is realistic, haunting, action-packed, and not long enough for my taste. This book will suck you in and intrigue you all the way through. Highly recommend.

This book definitely brought me into JP Grimms pain. JP is dealing with PTSD from the war and he also feels responsible for the death of his brothers in arms. Most of us know what PTSD is but reading such a detailed account of how it is affecting JP and his family is heartbreaking. The author did an exceptional job of opening my eyes to the degree of some people’s struggle. This story draws you in and to make matters worse there is also danger heading their way. This story was emotional, riveting, and hard to put down.

No Pistol Tastes the Same by Jacob Paul Patchen is a story about JP Grimm, a U.S. Marine Sergeant who goes to war and comes back plagued with nightmares of what he witnessed and what he wished he’d done differently. All he can think about is getting home to his family, but once he does and some time passes, he starts showing signs of PTSD that rapidly progress and he does not know how to process it or let anyone help him. Although his beautiful wife, Lisa, is supportive and hurts for him as she watches him spiral, she becomes terrified of what he might accidentally do and has to make difficult choices to keep their 7 year old son safe while her husband unravels into the depths of his terrors.

This book reminded me how easily we take for granted that we have brave men and women, most who are strangers to us, who are willing to sacrifice literally everything to fight for our entire country’s freedoms. I know firsthand it is not that easy for them to come home and slip back into normal routine with society, if they ever even can. This author captured these truths so well in a way that was equally heartbreaking and beautiful. The writing and details were absolutely phenomenal and thought-provoking. I love the direction this story took towards the last several chapters, and look forward to reading the next book after reading the sample provided. I absolutely recommend to anyone who wants to experience what many of our servicemen and servicewomen endure, away from home and when they return. To anyone who does live with PTSD but is considering reading this story, take it slow as PTSD is a main theme here and is quite detailed. Still, a great read!

No Pistol Tastes the Same (PTSD Disaster Book 1) by Jacob Paul Patchen – Review by Janel Bernotas

What a fantastic book! This was the first novel I’ve ever read by Jacob Paul Patchen, and I was definitely not disappointed. The novel centers around Sergeant JP Grimm and the mental and emotional war wounds he brings back from his tour in the Middle East. He feels extreme guilt for the things that occurred out there but bottles them all up and refuses to talk about them or seek help for his PTSD. Eventually, he drives away his wife and son when they no longer feel safe around him and his personality changes, and he becomes suicidal. Throughout the book, I kept mentally cheering him on. Wishing he’d just talk to someone…anyone!

“No Pistol Tastes the Same (PTSD Disaster Book 1)” most definitely hit me in my heart. Not just for the characters…for myself too. My younger brother served as an SSG and MP with the US Army during Operation Enduring Freedom. He committed suicide in 2013 at the age of 25. Jacob Paul Patchen’s novel gave me a glimpse of what may or may not have gone through my brothers mind. Though this novel was very triggering for me at times emotionally, it was a great read and a much needed read. For that, I thank the author. I look forward to reading more upcoming novels by him.

This book comes with a Trigger warning, for anyone who has seen action. I haven’t seen action but I feel like I have by reading this. It makes me really sad for those veterans who are unable to receive the help that they really deserve. This book is probably a stepping stone for some one who needs to reach out and get some help.

This book made me feel a whole range of emotions. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I read it very quickly and have spent a lot of time thinking about it, since. The last part of the book, while it offers the catalyst for the main character to heal and save his family/humanity, felt a little detached from the rest. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this read and haven’t gotten it out of my head, yet.

JP Grimm was deployed to Iraq. One day, his fellow soldiers were approached by a child that looked a startling amount like his young son. His appearance is what made JP pause, and thanks to that pause – the child bomber killed soldiers. JP comes home a broken man, intensely suffering from PTSD and having it destroy him and affecting everyone in his life. The last portion of the book introduces an electromagnetic activity. This activity allows an opportunity to save people and feel as though he redeems himself.

This can be very heavy at times. It is intense. It is emotional. It is raw. And it is utterly beautiful. Highly recommend this read.

This is a new author for me. I was not sure how I would feel about this story. This is a story about PTSD, and how it affects each person differently, and honestly it was a story that hit close to home. Jacob Paul Patchen had a unique, detailed way of telling this story. The attention to detail was outstanding, and it made me feel as if I was part of the story as well. His characters are realistic, raw and by no means did the story feel as is if it were a made up tale. The main character and his struggles will leave you asking yourself multiple questions, what would you do if you were in his shoes? Would you be able to live with yourself afterwards, the list of questions goes on and on. Through the rollercoaster of emotions, I can honestly say that you will find this is a book that is an enjoyable page turner!

I am seriously struggling to find the right words to do this book and it’s talented author the justice it truly deserves. I was so not ready for the emotional rollercoaster that I was taken on while reading this and while my level of respect for our service men and women was already high, this is most definitely a very strong reminder that it should be even more so. It reinforces to all who read it not just what is sacrificed during service but the battles that continue well after they are home with loved ones and the lasting effects it can all have. While I have never experienced this for myself so can not say that I fully understand, this wonderful author has helped to further open my eyes and for that I am forever grateful.

The amount of quotes in this book that I would like to share is unmeasurable! They are all so deep.

“We’re all just stalks of grain in the wind, Jp. We go where we go, we bend where we bend, and if it’s our time to break, then we break. But you can’t just let yourself bleed out because you think that you deserve it”.
Is one of those quotes that just made a lot of sense for this book.

But what to say about how it was.. I’m a bit speechless, which doesn’t happen often to me. I would recommend doing yourself a favor and go get this book and read it cover to cover. This is one of the most powerful and absorbing books I’ve read so far this year. It really was incredible. I am really interested in picking up book 2 after reading the excerpt of chapter 1 at the end of this book and I will absolutely be checking into reading the authors other works.

This book was gripping from the very first page to the end. The author did an incredible job portraying a journey that no person should go through, but many do. I had so many emotions throughout this story, and I already want to read it again to really absorb everything. A harrowing story about how one man’s dedication rippled outward, tormenting his mind and family. Will his wife, Lisa, be able to love him out of this nightmare or will he suffer at the relentless mercy of his past military service? This is a must read for anyone but especially if you know someone affected by PTSD as it is such an eye-opening experience!

Before I even get started I just want to say thank you to the author for broaching a subject that is very real and very scary both to the person living with PTSD and those around people living with it . To many , it’s a taboo but for some of us it’s a demon we have to live with ……

Also , PTSD is also very misunderstood and alit was put into perspective for reading this book , so again , thank you .

JP goes to war to keep his country and it’s people safe but he’s left with the aftermath of the decisions he had to make when he comes home . His wife is by his side fighting his demons and it really isn’t easy , my heart just broke into a million pieces over and over again for this family and so many like it 😭

A very emotional and hard hitting read

This was an excellent book! It was one I’d definitely read again, although I had a hard time with it. The realistic portrayal of mental health and the true experiences shared are so enlightening. It’s such an important topic to understand and yet there’s such a strong stigma against discussing it. I truly adore that this author sat down and decided this story was the one to be told. I will absolutely be looking up his other books! If you’re looking for a story that will teach you something, or let you understand someone else’s experiences in a way that lets you walk beside them and just listen – even if they may not have all the words – I would definitely recommend this one.

This book is incredibly intense. Going into it, I knew it would be a little heavy, considering what the synopsis is about, but it was way heavier than I expected. I am a person suffering from PTSD, and even though I didn’t get mine through war, the details and intensity of the flashbacks did almost trigger mine, so if you struggle with PTSD go into this book carefully and delicately, and take breaks when you need to. That being said, however, it is a very good book, and wonderfully written. The author is keen on details, and it goes from a rocky beginning to a well done ending. I’m looking forward to the second book, now that I know what I’m expecting.

This book is heavy, and may have intense trigger warnings for those that suffer from PTSD. That being said, this was a book that I could not put down. No Pistol Tastes the Same is about PTSD, a very real and very intense illness that many of our war vets come home with. The synopsis of the book reads “Sergeant JP Grimm didn’t pull the trigger. Now his Marine brothers are dead…” The intended target of that bullet? A child. A child in a suicide vest that eerily reminds him of his very own son. A moment of hesitation, and the bomb goes off, leaving his entire team deceased around him. After the split second that cost him everything, JP must go home, and pretend war never happened. He tries to bond with his son, who he keeps seeing in that young boy so very far away. JP struggles with his own thoughts, denial, and grief, and you (the reader) will be taken on an emotional rollercoaster.

This a book of what happens to people after war. PTSD is a real illness that our soldiers come back with. The main character of the book is JP Grimes. He is fighting to regain his hold on himself after, in the middle of a firefight, fails to shoot the child wearing a suicide vest. He can’t pull the trigger because he sees his son in the child resulting in his entire squad dying. He returns to his family tortured by his moment’s inaction. After returning home, he struggles with connecting with his son. He can’t control his emotions and flashbacks. He refuses help, and things go from bad to worse with the death of his grandparents who raised him. This story is deeply emotional and gives good insight to what living with PTSD is and how to heal.

No Pistol Tastes the Same (PTSD Disaster Book 1) by Jacob Paul Patchen. This is my first book by this author but it won’t be my last. I loved this book. It was so very emotional. Its the story of Sergeant JP Grimm who has watched many of his friends die. The child in the suicide vest reminded him so much of his son. When he returns to his wife and son things are not the same. His relationship with his son is totally different. His relationship with his wife is falling apart. JP is shutting everyone and everything out. The guilt and shame he has after seeing his whole troop die is indescribable. This story is filled with so much emotion. Living with PTSD must be horrific. Will he be able to put his life back together or will he lose everything he cares about. Can he patch up things with his son? Will he be able to let his wife in so they can repair the damage done? This book was so good I didn’t want to put it down when I started reading it.

From the very beginning, you know that this book is going to get down into the nitty gritty of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In today’s society, most people know what PTSD is, but very few understand or can comprehend it. We know the definition, the diagnosis, and some of the symptoms that come with PTSD. However, not everyone experiences it and those that do never respond or experience it in the same way as another. I think this novel does a great job of telling a detailed story about how PTSD can play a role in someone’s every day life.

This book takes on a slow pace but does not fail to keep your attention. The way author tells the story of JP and his family is undeniably fascinating and heartwarming. This family is what America would consider the average home. Being able to see behind closed doors, specifically into JP’s mind, is enthralling.

I could talk all day about this book. If you are a psychology lover such as myself, you will want to devour every page of this novel. If you enjoy war fiction, pick it up. If you want a fast paced book, you might want to save this one for a rainy day.

Just because you make it home from the battlefield does not mean the war is over. While this particular solider may be fiction his story is just one example of the horrors and struggles one with PTSD may face. Patchen brings this story to life in a way that makes your heart strings pull, your eyes water, and has your mind struggling to process. In the story, Sgt. JP Grimm has physically returned from war, but in many ways he is still in that desert. Grimm struggles to mentally. He plays what if, if I had done this differently, self loathes, struggles with survivors guilt as well as adapting back to home life. One moment he is home then with one sound, shadow, movement, he is right back in the war. The struggles faced as a result of his PTSD affect more than himself. It influences relationships with family, friends and himself. Self medicating is just one of the ways Grimm attempts to cope. Will he get the help and support he needs? Or just me another example of the glaring lack of support faced?

Hands down this story is worth reading. It is a well thought out, realistic glimpse into just one of the many common contributors to PTSD. The thought provoking story line that puts you through the ringer. Patchen did an amazing job bringing the characters to life. While it did take me a moment to get into the story once I was in, I was in. This book brings more light to the issues many people still face today.
