North to Nara (Crimson Sash Book 1) by Amanda Marin – Review by Jenni Bishop

North to Nara (Crimson Sash, #1)North to Nara by Amanda Marin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

North to Nara (Crimson Sash Book 1) by Amanda Marin is a story that I fell in love with the characters. It is a YA dystopian tale and it reminds me along the lines of The End Game and the like. It’s a story about reigning rulerships that live under antiquated laws, where those who don’t abide by them are punished. It is a story of love that is forbidden and torn apart just for being in love. I enjoyed Amanda’s writing and the story flowed easily and my heart ached for the injustice these beautiful characters went through. It is a great start to the series and as a debut book for Amanda. I am now chomping on the bit for the next book.

Neve believed in all the world had to offer but that was before she came face to face with the truth, a truth that is kept from everyone. She never meant to fall in love with the wrong man but that is exactly what happened, and now they have to face the punishment.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Misfortune of Vision: Druid’s Brooch Series: #4 by Christy Nicholas is a page turner and I have to admit it was hard to put down. This is possibly my favourite book of the Druid Brooch series. Christy’s characters are full of life and are multidimensional and complex but they are beautifully written. Even though the books are part of a series they are standalones and can be read out of order. Each tale is that of the magical brooch and the families that it is passed down throughout generations. Christy’s writing is vivid and you can easily imagine the worlds and characters that she writes about and the magic and fantasy, folklore and history.

Past Storm and Fire by Christy Nicholas is original and engaging and the author wove real life into fantasy as she wrote this story. It is a quick and fluid read that was intriguing and definitely takes you on a journey to remember. The fantasy, the mystery and the past and present collide. Captivating and refreshing is how I would describe this tale that shows a woman who is unsure of her marriage who finds herself immersed in a world that is not known if it is real or not.

Until Fools Find Gold: A Providence Gold Series and Until Series Crossover by Mary B. Moore. OMG. Brilliant just brilliant. Even though the underlying story of abuse and horrible acts with is heartbreaking but this is the funniest thing I have read in a long time. Mary B. Moore I salute you, you have written something so unique and original that you have created a masterpiece. I read this story in one go as there was no way I wanted to put it down as I was so engrossed and immersed in this wonderfully woven world. The story is so magical it had me on the edge of my seat through to the end and I was howling with laughter out loud so much that I was crying and my husband checked on me several times to make sure I was ok. Mary B has very cleverly written something that completely throws you as you never know what to expect.

Luna had been dealt a sh*t hand in a father that treats her less than human but she has a family who loves her, if only she can get back to them. When her best friend receives a call the family do everything in their power to get there before the evil can take her away again.

This is a brilliant start to the series that is so much more. This without a doubt is the best book I have read this year and Mary B is now up on a pedestal of great authors. I absolutely will be making sure I can get everything she has written or will write.

Blinded by Betrayal with Spin Drift: Book One (Silent Secrets) by Lisette Kristensen is a brilliant and fast paced shot story. But don’t let that the story is short fool you, there is so much going on and is action packed. My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Werewolf Queen (Wheel of Crowns Book 1) by Brandi Elledge is a great supernatural paranormal fantasy story that kept me so engrossed and immersed in her carefully woven world. The story is so magical it had me on the edge of my seat through to the end. Brandi has very cleverly written something that completely throws you off track just when you think you have got it worked out. The suspense will keep you on alert and intrigued without letting go. This is a brilliant start to the series that is action packed with werewolves and witches, warlocks and vampires, psychics and demons and so much more. The story is thrilling and fast paced and also has romance and humour, I loved Granny, the best friend and the fairy who each had me howling in laughter.

Sadie comes from a long line of witches, but she has no powers. Whilst getting ready for her 18th birthday, everything changes and her life is turned upside down. It seems everyone either wants her or wants her dead.

This is one brilliant and masterful tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat and your heart rate pulsing. This has to be one of the best if not the best stories I have read this year and Brandi is now one of my favourite authors.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Love and Ghosts (Crescent City Ghost Tours Book 1) by Carrie Pulkinen is an exciting supernatural romance and is a story that is a breath of fresh air from normal romances.. The premise of the story is original and Carrie’s writing was spot on and swept me into a world I could relate to. I loved this book! The mystery and suspense, ghosts and possessions, romance and the humor was perfectly balanced. There were brief times I wanted to shake Emily but overall the characters were loveable and the slow burn between the main characters was sweet and sexy. The story is set in New Orleans and Carrie made the world she created come alive with her descriptions being so vivid you could see it all.

It is one story that will have you wondering what is hiding in the shadows and just what is around when that cold chill that gives you goosebumps happens upon you.

Next Door Knight (Man’s Best Friend Book 2) by Nicole Flockton is a little innocuous story that could easily overlooked. It is a second chance romance that is a feelgood story that will leave a smile on your face but it is also a little emotional as well as our main characters learn to relive their lives. Willow is the star of the show as she works her magic into the hearts of those who have suffered. At times I was a little frustrated with the MC’s because they became closed off at times that I thought was unwarranted. Overall it is a sweet romance that will warm your heart.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Heart of Stone ~ Book 1: Emery & Jackson (Heart of Stone Book 1 (Emery&Jackson)) is a contemporary romance story that is full of drama and passion, secrets and lies and lots of chemistry and humour that had me laughing out loud at times. The story is centered around Emery and Jackson but it also gives us a look at their friends and the women that drive them to madness. I am sure their stories will be very very interesting. The characters are definitely interesting and some are crazy and quirky, and I loved Granny and her straightforwardness with the first inappropriate thing that popped out of her mouth. As much as I enjoyed this story, the female characters frustrated me, I can understand why the men in their lives had had enough. At the same time the men came across as too full on in their alphaness (is that even a word?) and just expected the women to jump to their demands. I did like that the story was told in multiple POV’s as you have more insight into the characters and what makes them tick.

Operation Boyfriend by Molly Zenk is a young adult romance story that I have a love hate relationship with. The story is well written but I did not like the main character or her best friend. The MC is one who really wouldn’t think for herself and let others make her decisions for her in all aspects of her life. Her supposed best friend I would have given up if she was my friend. There is so much angst that many times I went to put the book down and give up but for some reason each time I pushed on. The premise of the story was good and there is some interesting twists and I loved the character, Corin, he found his way into my heart. There is a little humour in the story that made reading it a little more fun.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Drawing Bloodlines (The Princeton Allegiant Series Book 1) by Deborah Garland is a supernatural paranormal romance story that grabbed my attention and kept me intrigued from start to finish. It is not your average vampire story and it was good to read something a little different. I love me a good supernatural paranormal story and this one is unique and a little thrilling. There is plenty of passion and drama, lots of angst and political vampire factions that made for an exciting tale. I loved the chemistry and bond between the two main characters which made this a beautiful story. But let’s not forget the secondary characters are just as interesting and also made a pivotal difference. The ending was fabulous.

Alex has been alone for hundreds of years and never met someone who makes him feel the way the mysterious woman in his clinic has ever made him feel. She is like an addiction.

Elizabeth is lonely, she longs for that special someone to share her life with but she never thought it would be the mysterious doctor who turns out to be much more than she thought.

This wonderful tale is one that no one should miss and you will love it just as much as I did. I can not wait for the next installment.

Hawke (Men of Syn Book 1) by Anise Storm is a dark and intriguing erotic romance story that is set around a BDSM club, SYN. This sexy and thrilling read is well written and Anise’s descriptive writing makes it easy to image this dark and enticing world and what the characters have been through to make them what they are today. There is also a murderer on the loose and anyone could be his next victim.

The very mysterious Hawke is as arrogant and magnetic as he is broken. The life he was made to live make him the closed off and cold hearted man he is today. My heart literally broke for this beautiful monster of a man who had never known love, only ever abuse. Can he battle his demons before it is too late to save the one he loves?

Things We Lost (Loving Locksley Book 1) by Shae Banks is a sweet second chance romance story that is a little emotional. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t like it, I did really enjoy the story. I liked the characters and Shaes depiction of them made them seem real and likeable.

Man with the Mafia (Man With Series Book 2) by Debra J. Falasco is a wonderful romance story that is full of drama and suspense, secrets and lies, intrigue and danger. There is also lots of chemistry and passion that will have your heart melting. The characters are complex and completely loveable. The story is told in multiple POV’s which I love because you get to know exactly what and who the characters really are. It is one story that I did not want to put down and I had to know where it was going and what the outcome was, that is how invested in these characters I was. Even though this is the second book in the series they can be read as standalones. I love Debra’s descriptions of the old Italian neighbourhood and it’s occupants, especially the grumpy old men.

Vincent Manetti doesn’t do relationships, he a highly respected lawyer and spends some of his working week in his old neighbourhood. When a tiny thing of a woman literally falls into his arms, his life changes forever but can he keep her safe.

Deirdre had to get away from the constant hell she was trying to get over but leaving meant leaving her friends behind. Being in a relationship is the last thing she wants or need, but one man is determined to change all that and protect her do matter what the cost and she is helpless to say no.

Broken Pieces by Judith B. Pinkard is her debut novel which is a biographical story that is heartbreaking and thought provoking. This is her journey as she sees it and what her family went through. Judith is honest in her telling and leaves nothing unsaid and it is brave of her to share it with us. It is almost clinical in the way it is written as if it is someone on the outside looking in but it packs a very emotional punch.

Judith was considered a miracle baby her parents were so happy and in love until a horrific tragedy left them all broken in one way or another. It is full of pain and suffering, turmoil and insecurities as they try to find their way back to a new ‘normal’.

Broken Pieces is a very apt name for this story.
