My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Emma is the next in line for the Thorn Ranch. After graduating college she is at a pivotal point in her life and questioning what steps she will take next. Taking her horse out she rides into an area she is not as familiar with and ends up rescued by someone from a group calling themselves The People. Held captive in a cave with none of the common comforts she is used to. Emma asks if she can return home, the reluctance from The People to let her go is compounded with being discovered. Will Emma be able to return home or will she be lost forever?

There is much more to the story, Emma’s mother Josie is a huge part of the story as well as Kai who is a member of The People. The story reminded me a bit of some of the western family sagas I have read in the past. Captivating story, I was surprised by the way the story unfolded and was kept guessing as to where Emma’s life would lead.

Emma is a heiress to The Thorn, a ranch that has been in her family for generations and is the largest ranch in Texas. She knows the land like the back of her hand. Yet, going out for a ride one night, she finds a tribe living among her property and the hold thinking the spirits sent her to them. She tries to return home and her family searches for her and exhausts all resources to find her.
Emma learns a new way of life all while trying to plan an escape.
This was a great book. It was read by the point of view of both Emma and her mother Josie and he endless search of her daughter. You got to learn about the land in Texas and the old ways of The People, who have been able to live off the land undetected for years.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story; I couldn’t put it down until the very end as I wanted to see how things would turn out. I loved the author’s descriptions of the Texan wilds and life on a ranch. This was a well written story about intrigue and family drama. Emma was a strong female character who loved her life, but when taken in by The People, she worked hard to earn their trust. Emma consistently looked for ways to get home, but while living among her new people, she found a way to try to help them with her education and knowledge. I enjoyed how the story would switch back and forth from Emma’s point of view to her mother, Josie’s point of view. It was heartbreaking reading her mother’s anguish over her missing daughter and the pressures of the legacy of Thorn Ranch. I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a fast paced story about love, drama, and family.

This book was interesting. It honestly took me a while to fully get into it. The writing style seemed a little stiff and formal, and to me personally didn’t feel like it flowed well. The book seemed really drawn out with a rushed ending. It’s a great story though, and I wish we got more from the romance with the two leads than what we had in the book. Hopefully, there’s a sequel coming soon and we can follow along with Emma’s story even more!

I thought I would try a different novel than the ones I have been reading recently, and I’m glad I did! The author does a beautiful job of describing the feel and looks of Texas! We see this through Emma’s love for her state is how many people in Texas feel and its own unique beauty. We follow Emma through significant life decisions at The Thorn and how she handles them; which is like all Rosales women before her: head on! However, not all things can be dealt with this way which leads our heroine to take several missteps. The familial connection is one of my favorite things in the story as well as Emma’s grit in harrowing situations. (Texan women to the core!) Though the only thing that was a little underwhelming was the ending. I was hoping for a more explanation of the outcome. I truly enjoyed this book; otherwise, if you want to explore Texas and its culture, I recommend it!

OMG! This was such an amazing book. Emma is such a strong and fiery character, although I would have to say I loved Josie more. She was so tiny, yet commanded attention and never let anyone take advantage of her. When Emma disappears from her family’s ranch in Texas, her mother Josie never stops looking for her. She even takes one of the ranch hands to court to have him charged with Emma’s disappearance. Meanwhile, in what seems to be another time period on the ranch, Emma is being held captive by a tribe of secret cave dwelling people. She becomes one of their medicine women and adapts to their way of life, until a terrible disease runs through the tribe. What will happen to Emma? Will Josie ever find her? Will Emma want to return home or will she stay with the tribe?

The Fifth Daughter of Thorn Ranch by Julia Brewer Daily. I LOVED this book. Its so good and kept me up way too late flipping pages. Its the story of a large Texas Ranch, The Thorn. Emma the 5th generation of the family to run this ranch is in charge and is more than capable. She has finished Veterinary School with her degree and is ready to start working as soon as she gets there. When Emma takes a ride around the ranch to some of the more alienated areas she gets spooked and lost. When she is found it is by a group of people that are mostly unkown and they call themselves The People and they tell her of ancient myths and stories she has never heard. While Emma’s parents send out a frantic search for her, The People are scared that if they return her they will all be “taken care of”. Emma learns about this tribe of people, her ranch, secrets of the ranch and herself while she is “Kidnapped”. This story is full of mystery, ranching information and history. Do yourself a favor and read it today!

“A modern ranch with an ancient secret.”

The Fifth Daughter of Thorn Ranch by Julia Brewer Daily is a western women’s fiction story- a family saga with secrets, drama, mystery, family, conflict, kidnapping, suspense, adventure, action, romance, mother daughter relationship dynamics, and palpable tension.
Ms. Daily has written a richly detailed and vividly descriptive story- her attention to detail really makes this story come to life and has given the characters a realistic and believable quality. The story is told from several POV’s, moving from past to present and back again, which captures the complexities of the storyline really well, and gives the reader a really great vantage point from which to enjoy the story.
I thought the dramatic developments were really well crafted and made the story quite engrossing. This is my favourite of the two books of Ms. Daily’s that I have read, so far, and I look forward to seeing what she does next.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Julia Brewer Daily!

I have loved this author for all they create from a book I have read by them last year. Ever since I was hooked. This book hooked me just as much! The book had creativity, and screamed that wow factor!

The book was amazing as it was mysterious. I loved the feel I got as I read, you knew something was well not known at first glance with the ranch, but you didn’t have the clues just yet to decipher what it could be! I enjoyed Emma’s as a character as well! She was quite relatable. Sometimes what we think we want vs what people think we should want,….is not the case sometimes we value something no one, not even ourselves have thought of! I was very intrigued, and I wanted to learn the mystery, the author certainly kept me in suspense. When things came together I was more intrigued than ever! The author is amazing at capturing the reader as well as keeping you interested no matter what the story plot is. The book was a fantastic read. I do hope maybe for another installment down the line! Couldn’t get enough! Loved this book!

Amazing author that amazes my mind once again! I completely fell in love with this book and the writing. Defiantly a must read in my books! And most certainly a high recommendation from myself to you!

The Fifth Daughter of Thorn Ranch is an unusual yet unique and captivating modern western with a blend of realism and fantasy. This romance story is told by going back and forth from the past and present and told by different POV’s.

Thorn Ranch a million-acre ranch holds unimaginable beauty with an almost reverence to it and a secret as old as time, as ancient as the land around them. The People, a hidden tribe in the caves on the ranch. There is power and an almost mystical feel to the land they inhabit.

The story explores a captivating world of family, alternative ways, way of life, soul searching and self-reflection for two of the ranches most resilient female heiresses in this harsh yet picturesque setting.

It has everything from tension, revenge, danger, mystery, lots of suspense, romance and adventure. The book does start out slowly but soon picks up and before you know it you are lost.

This is an amazing story. Such a strong and fascinating woman to be the main character, Emma is one of my favorite protagonists of the year. She comes up against a large challenge and overcomes them. This story makes me think of Outlander, with its time travel parts. The story is well-written with such detail that you feel you are there. The switch in POV between Emma and Josie keeps you engaged. I found I just couldn’t put the story down. I was into it from the beginning. I have never been to Texas but felt like, hmmmm, maybe? The tone of the story, the plot and everything just flows so smoothly. It’s a terrific story. Fans of time travel should give this a shot. Western style time travel, new genre? Love!!!

Holy moly! I just cannot say enough about this book! Three young unwed mothers meet in Magnolia Home Hospital where they become friends over the seven months they were roommates at the home. Giving birth on the same day, they make a pact to keep things secret. Never able to see the children they gave birth to nor naming, they were expected to go to back to their lives as if nothing ever happened. But something happened that changed each woman forever!
Let me just say that this book moved me to tears! Through the tragedy and triumphs of each unwed mother and the children they relinquished for adoption was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. This was such a personal book for me to read as I was an unwed mother in the 1980’s and I chose to put my child up for adoption however my experience was different. I chose the adoptive parents and I held my daughter in the hospital and I named her before she went directly home with the adoptive parents. This book just ripped my heart out reading that the women had no real idea if the childbirth they went through was real. This book is a must read but beware that if you have any relationship with adoption whether giving or receiving, this book may be a trigger! But such an amazing read!!!!

“But good things can come from pieces of a broken heart patched back together.”

In No Games Given, Julia Brewer Daily crafted three separate lives for readers to explore. Sandy, Faith, and Becca could not be more different. Set in the cruel 1960’s when women had few options and reputations to protect. These three women find themselves in a maternity home in New Orleans. They struggle through the loss of their youth, giving away their children for adoption, and the rippling effects they must face every single day. Each woman had to find a way to move forward after giving away the biggest pieces of their hearts.

This book felt very personal to me. My sister was given away for adoption in the late 80’s. While it was 20 years after this story took place, society still held women to an unfair standard. This book felt as though these are the type of stories my sister would’ve created as a young woman about her birth mother. Not only the stories but the endless stream of questions she would’ve asked herself. Was she beautiful? Was she successful? Did she even remember her? These very questions are not only tackled in the book but handled in a heart breaking sequence of events.

Julia wrote a breath-taking story with so many twists and turns. The summary does not do justice to the plot that awaits readers. If you have an interest in time pieces, diving deeper into women’s issues, and going on a wild adventure then I highly suggest this book! Just make sure you have some tissues nearby as you will need them!

I will be anxiously awaiting reading other books by this author in the future!

I absolutely loved this book! I love the way each chapter was written for faith, sandy and Rebecca. It was an emotional read and important read for many. To see the differences in others lives through pregnancy in the 1960s. It took you on a rollercoaster of emotions from scandal to rape etc. I would say trigger warning for anyone who has  went through any of those things. I enjoyed the friendship between Faith, Sandy and Rebecca. I hope for a sequel to see what happened next for each girl. I did have a hard time putting it down needing to know what happens next. A must read for your 2022 books!

This is such a heartbreaking story. This story follows the lives of three different young ladies that each find themselves pregnant and unmarried. This book really tackles the sexism and the racism that unfortunately were so prevalent back then. They were forced to give their babies up and in the midst of their fear and forced silence they bond and become friends. Years later they’re brought back together and searching for answers. There are some unexpected twists in this story and I’m so happy that they all get closure in the end. This is a must read that will really open your eyes to the emotional turmoil that so many young women suffered through.

This book gives historical ficition a great name.

1965. Sandy flees her home in order to avoid her mother’s violent lover. Becca makes a mistake and falls in love with the wrong man. Faith is also subjected to a brutal onslaught. These three young, unwed women meet at a maternity home hospital in New Orleans with no assistance and no alternative options, where they are expected to abandon their kids and return home as if nothing happened. However, such a life-changing incident can never be forgotten, and no secret is ever truly buried. A blackmailer threatens to disclose their secrets and destroy their lives twenty-five years later when the women are reconnected by a blackmailer.

Their fundamental underpinnings would be shaken by that shocking news, which would echo all the way to the White House. This compelling drama told from the viewpoints of three women, is based on true stories of women in the 1960s who discovered themselves pregnant yet unmarried, and were driven by family and society to make dreadful decisions. The narrative of how that unthinkable crime affected women’s lives forever is told in No Names to Be Given, a painful yet hopeful novel about family and redemption.

I loved this story. I loved every page of it. Every chapter was exciting. This is my first book from this author and I can’t wait to read the rest of her books.

Sandy has run away from home to escape her mother’s abusive boyfriend. Faith is dealing with the aftermath of a terrifying attack. Becca has fallen in liven with the wrong kind of guy. Three situations that have been heard time and time again, but in the 1960s the world was a different place. These three young girls with three different circumstances all find themselves pregnant and unwed in a maternity hospital in New Orleans.

However, nothing ever stays completely secret does it? 25 years after giving birth, these three girls, now women, are coming back together because someone knows. Someone wants to tell and if they do, it could ruin the lives they’ve put together and have an effect on so much more than anyone could ever expect.

No Names to be Given is beautiful and enticing. I knew within the first three chapters this book would leave me with so many feelings and it didn’t disappoint. It covers the tough, yet touching, topic of adoption and shows how much pain can be in any decision.

I’m so happy to have a copy of this book for my shelves and plan to pass on copies to others. This is probably the best debut novel I’ve ever gotten my hands on and is 100% the best story I’ve read in a long time. I’m itching for more from this author. Thank you for such a beautiful story!

Starting in 1965, this book centers around three women who are faced with tough decisions through impending motherhood and is based on real events. Sandy, Becca, and Faith embark upon a journey that will keep you at the edge of your seat as you root for their endearing and intriguing characters. These three women are pressured by not only the societal standards, but familial and internal standards, as well, and struggle to do what is right for them. I really appreciated this book. The story is quite easy to fall into and stay hooked until the very end – the characters are the best part about it. It left me wanting to learn more and experience more from each of these characters once I was finished. I give this book 5 stars and would love each character to get her own book!

This book is the story of three women who meet after they all get pregnant out of wedlock and go through their pregnancies in a maternity home. This book is emotional and covers so many topics going through the 60s to early 2000s and all of the events of the times. From interracial relationships, rape, and abuse. Sandy, Becca, and Faith all go through different walks of life, but bond as they are going through one of the toughest things in their life. The story continues the story after the birth of their children and how it effects them each over the years and what happens with their children afterwards.

I loved this book. It was emotional and beautifully written. I had a hard time putting it down. I wanted to keep reading it and would love to read more by her. There are so many incredible stories woven through this book. This had everything; tragedy, romance, heartbreak, happy moments, and at times very intense.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to be in their feels. This will give you that. Events such as the ones portrayed in this book are relatable and were happening throughout the years.

A tapestry of women overcoming their circumstances is woven throughout the novel. Readers get to follow the women through the decades to come. I’m a bit speechless as I set here trying to find the right words to give this story the praise it deserves. This story touches on how many women were treated in the sixties especially the unwed pregnant women. Women were treated in a sense like garbage. These three ladies all end up at a home where they are expected to give their babies away. Each one a different circumstance but these women all had secrets. Oh my gosh you guys this book will take you on quite the emotional rollercoaster ride. My heart hurt for them. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. To witness in what felt like real time the tragedy of these women’s lives was drop great breaking. What an intriguing read! This story follows Sandy, Becca, and Faith. Life in the 60’s was so very different from what it is now. These three ladies find themselves pregnant and are sent off to what is called a maternity house. Back then, this is what happened if you were unmarried. You would be shipped off there until you give birth, give your baby up for adoption, and then go back home and pretend nothing happened. And that is what happened with these three ladies – until years later they become victims of a blackmail plot threatening to uncover their secret.

This story is about three pregnant young women who find themselves in a home in New Orleans where they are eventually expected to give away their baby. This was situation many young women found themselves in back in the 1950’s or 60’s. Each of them have different reasons on why they are at the home. I really appreciated hearing how each character was feeling or thinking. The author did a great job of sharing the characters, making it easy to emotionally connect with them. I also appreciated that we find out how their children’s lives have turned out. I can’t even imagine how difficult it was for the young mothers to give away their child. It truly shows how strong the young women had to be and also as they grew into strong mature women.

This is such a heartfelt rendition of what unwed mothers faced in the 1960s, and even before and after that time. The story follows three women from completely different backgrounds; Faith is a minister’s daughter, Becca comes from a wealthy white family, and Sandra comes from a farm family but ends up homeless and alone. Though each girl has their own unique story, they all find themselves pregnant and sent to a home for unwed mothers in New Orleans where they become roommates. The girls learn to lean on one another and after their babies are born, they each return to their own lives. Twenty five years later, someone who threatens to expose their pasts brings them back together.

This story is unique because you get the perspective of all three women. You get three stories that are so similar but so different at the same time. The characters are well developed and you just fall in love with them right away, wanting to take their pain away and support them. It is so emotional knowing that this is based on real experiences of real women who didn’t have the freedoms we have today. They suffered and had to fight impossible situations where they weren’t given options like we are. It really makes me feel lucky to have the rights I do today.
