Jake the Growling Dog A Children’s Book about Kindness, Diversity, Dogs, and Friendship by Samantha Shannon – Review by Sarah King

Jake the Growling DogJake the Growling Dog by Samantha Shannon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jake the Growling Dog is an animal character-based story that teaches about individual differences, acceptance, kindness, and friendship. Jake the dog is a growler. He growls all the time not just when he is mad or scared. The others don’t understand this at least not at first. As the story continues he and the others learn to accept differences, be kind, as well as form friendships.

The story is well written and illustrated. The book could considered appropriate for a wider age group. The illustrations are well done so a child on the younger end could easily make up their own story, a pre-k to 1st grade range would benefit from this being a family time or class story time book and for kids who are reading on their own this would be a good book for him to practice with.

I really enjoyed this book. Ellawyn was a relatable character. Her friendship with Benji was beautiful as was her developing relationship with Beckett. There definitely were some trigger themes in this book that tugged at parts of the heart and mind. I really like dual point of view stories. I would definitely read more of this series.

This small town contemporary romance really blew me away. When I first saw the cover to this book I simply knew that I had to read it before I even read the synopsis. But from the very first chapter I knew that this romance was going to have me hooked. Filled with relatable characters, twists and turns, and of course romance I just simply couldn’t put it down. This was a great book! I wasn’t sure what exactly to expect, but I loved the cover and this one wasn’t a disappointment! Just as a warning, this book does cover some domestic abuse/violence so it may possibly contain triggers for that. The writing was so well done with this book, I was instantly drawn in to the story and didn’t want to leave. There was a small twist but to me it was predictable, I guessed it pretty early on. Overall though I loved this book and can’t wait to read the next installment!

Amazing read from start to finish! This was a book that literally had me hooked from its opening statements on the first page! I did not know really what I was into as I started to read, but none the less, it was a thrilling read that made me feel many things! I really enjoyed this novel!

Ellawyn as a character really called to me for things she faced and got out of. As I too was in a similar situation. And she loved to read books! How could I not feel a connection to this character? I loved the moments she shared with Benji. He was a wonderful character. I loved the sweet moments they had and how their chemistry never felt forced. It just flowed. Their story was beautiful. The whole story was in truth. I loved the descriptions of the town as well; it really was immersive with the thoughts and how I pictured it! I truly loved this book, that goes without saying! I can’t wait for the next in the series!

This was a wonderful book that truly touched me. I am very happy I had the pleasure of reading this book that touched my heart strings. Wonderful read. Highly recommend this author/novel/series!

Love Love Loved this book!! So glad I picked this book up to read. The cover is stunning and I was also drawn in so quickly by Ellawyn and Beckett’s story. When Ellawyn escapes to Quimby Grove, leaving her family to stay safe, she has a friendship with Benji that is so endearing, otherwise, Ellawyn stays to herself and has many walls up to protect herself. Benji is the owner of Starlight Books and when he requests his grandson to help out, Beckett comes to help his grandfather. Piece by piece Beckett tears down Ellawyn’s walls around her heart …. but there is definitely someone who is totally cruel that tries to come in between Beckett and Ellawyn. This story definitely is a roller coaster of emotions of running from your past, the love of a grandfather and a grandson, moments that I wanted to scream and cry and the heart felt moments I loved between Beckett and Ellawyn.

I loved this story so much…and I recommend this read highly!

P.S. I loved when Beckett arrived to Quimby Grove via coming from the Harrisburg Airport …the airport is local for me :).

I really enjoyed this book. It is such a moving and emotional story. It is such a deep story and deals with many elements such as grief, domestic abuse, learning to trust again and danger. The author does an amazing job of dealing with topics such as grief, abusive trauma, domestic abuse in a way that shows the serious impact they have but in a respectful way.

When Ellawyn moves to Quimby Grove she is looking to escape her abusive ex boyfriend. All she wants is a quiet life and to feel safe again. And she finds safety in the little bookstore in town. It’s her haven and she feels like Benji the owner is family.

However Benji is ill, he calls his grandson for help while he goes through treatment. When Beckett arrives the attraction between them is immediate, but Ellawyn is afraid of their connection because of her past.
As time progress, and they learn to trust and rely on each other more their relationship gets stronger. But with a dark shadow hiding and preparing to pounce will Ellawyn be able to remain safe? Will she finally get the love she deserves?

Finding Starlight (Quimby Grove #1)Finding Starlight by Shannon Nikole

This book is gonna stay with me for awhile! Ellawyn (I love that name!) is suffering at the hands of her abuser. She needs to get away but she’s scared. One day she musters up the courage and finds herself in Quimby Grove. Ella spends her time in the local bookstore, Starlight Books, eating lemon blueberry scones and drinking her vanilla latte. Benji, the elderly bookstore owner, takes a particular liking to her and they strike up a friendship. Things take a turn for Benji and he mentions that his grandson, Beckett, will be arriving soon and he’d like for them to meet up.
Beckett owns an advertising agency but truly misses his home at Starlight Books. He’s ecstatic that his grandfather has called him home for a visit, but at the same time very apprehensive. What could this visit mean for them? Beckett learns the reason and decides he’s going to stay on for awhile and conduct his business affairs remotely. Then he sees her…the girl who stays in Starlight all day long and he has to meet her.
From the moment they meet, Beckett and Ellawyn have explosive fireworks all around. Then the messages start up. The threatening calls, notes left on doors…Ella thought she’d left all that behind. Can she open up her heart to someone else? Is she ready to make the next step in her life?
This book, as I previously mentioned, is going to stick with me for awhile. These characters are very relatable and loveable! I laughed, I cried, I even wanted to throw my book a few times while learning more about the residents of Quimby Grove. Benji completely stole my heart and I really hope the next book in this series is about Max.

Finding Starlight (Quimby Grove #1)Finding Starlight by Shannon Nikole
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was completely immersed in this enjoyable and engaging small town romantic suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed this contemporary romance in which Ellawyn Calloway moves to Quimby Grove, in Pennsylvania to make a fresh start, having left her old life behind. Ellawyn becomes friends with Benji, the elderly owner of ‘Starlight Books’, a quaint bookstore café, where she spends her time. When Benji’s grandson Beckett Walden returns to Quimby Grove for a visit, she can’t deny their connection, especially when Ellawyn learns of a devastating threat to Starlight Books, and so offers to help Beckett run the store.
As the couple get closer, Ellawyn finds herself letting her guard down, however, unknown to her a stalker is wanting to get her alone and she is in danger. I loved the characters, especially the likeable and relatable Ellawyn, and I thought Beckett was perfect for her. Their chemistry really sizzled off the page, leading to some steamy scenes. The small town feel of Quimby Grove really came across in the descriptive narrative, bringing the setting vividly to life. The storyline was full of drama, suspense and plenty of romance keeping me happily turning the pages. I look forward to the next book in the series.

There are trigger warnings so make sure to read them first.

Finding Starlight is a romantic suspense story. It is Shannon’s debut book and let me tell you it is a great first book. The story is told in a dual POV which I love. It is a slow burn small-town romance that will warm your heart, laugh out loud and cry making your heart break and bring out all the feels. Make sure you have tissues close by you are going to need them. Shannon gives us a story with fear and angst, friendships and love, pain and suspense and so much more.

This is the story of Ellawyn who moved to Quimby Grove, to start a new life away from her abusive boyfriend. But will she find her evermore?

Finding Starlight is fast paced and a quick read for you to curl up with a nice glass of wine to escape the real world for a while.

I was drawn to this book initially because I LOVED the cover. Secondly, I don’t was intrigued by the synopsis, as intended. The book itself did not disappoint. I felt the author’s writing was strong from the very beginning. I didn’t notice that the author spent too much time focusing on description yet at the same time, felt like I had been within the pages myself. Both main characters were fantastic. The kind of people you find yourself rooting for, just like an old friend. The storyline was not always light and fluffy and I felt the author navigated some heavy, darker topics that may be triggering to some, very well. I really can’t say enough about this book, I am so excited to see what more the author has in store.

Ellawyn is a lovely artist who expresses her experiences and memories on the canvas. Sadly, she had an abusive relationship and finally found the day where she can escape. She went into hiding at a lovely town called Quimby Grove. In this town, she finds a cafe with a library that she visits everyday and comes up with her sketches for her paintings. Benji has become like a father and friend to her. One day, he comes with bad news, and gets introduced to his grandson, Beckett. The story goes on from there. So worth the read!! LOVE!!!

First of all, can we please take a moment to appreciate the beautiful cover for this book. It is what drew me to this book, and I had one-clicked myself a copy before I even knew anything else about it. Yes, I know a am a sucker for a beautiful cover. Sometimes it is a hit and miss situation- but luckily this book made it on to the hit list.
Finding Starlight is the first book in the Quimby Grove series and debut novel by Shannon Nikole. I was surprised to find that this was the author’s debut novel, as it is quite well-woven. She is an author to watch out for going forward, because if this is what she can produce as a debut, I can only imagine what riveting reads she will deliver in the future.
This combines suspense and emotion really well. A story about seeking a fresh start, making friends, connections, romance, stalker danger, steam, tension, and dramatic developments. Add in a quaint little bookstore, a lovely friendship, and some tragedy- and this story definitely tugged on the heartstrings.
While there were moments where I felt like the story lagged, or seemed to skim over details I would have liked to know more about, while expanding on other (less important?) details, and such- I put it down to maybe being teething issues from being a first novel, and as such, I look forward to following this author to see what book #2, and other future releases, might hold.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Shannon Nikole!

This is one of the most intense and suspenseful romance novels I have read this year. Right up there at the top of the list, this author is vastly becoming one of my favorite romance authors. The stories are well-developed and researched. They feel like you are in there with the main characters. I find myself feeling all the emotions as Ellawyn is going through the major drama in her life. When Beckett comes into her life, you can feel the peace and comfort he brings. Benji is my favorite character. He could be anybody’s grandpa. The emotion coaster is felt throughout the whole book. I dare you to put the book down. Ellie and Beck both bring baggage to the relationship. What’s refreshing is they admit it. Can they work through it and make their relationship work? The force is strong between them. You’ll have to read it to see. The plot is strong. So smooth that it just flows between characters. I am a fan of how personal the whole story feel. Great read. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

You don’t see very many heroines in their late 40’s dealing with a ghosts, and evil incarnate. I don’t live in the Detroit area, but this author made me feel like that was my temporary home. I loved the writing and the details and the romance and the action. It was well blended together and not one took center stage. I look forward to reading book 2!

This was such a good find! 6 amazing books that help my engagement and interest! The books were beyond spectacular! I was hooked on every single one! Each book held my interest and had me literally on the edge of my seat! These were impossible to put down!

I loved how each book could be read as a stand alone, but why would you want to just read one? I loved each one had a story of a character of one of the 6 brothers we learned about, and their story. The females they meet that complete them, but also push them and test their limits! I found the females courageous and ruthless as the men were! The books were full of suspense and a mysterious tone. Things in everyone were not as they seemed. They were all gripping and had the shock factors I love.

This is a wonderful series! I LOVE the different storylines and all the characters. Lucky you! You get access to all these guys in one shot! This series has thrills, chills, drama and hotties! Sassy spitfire ladies and those MEN ! Plus the stories are filled with intrigue and suspense! Each story kept me on the edge and I read late into the night to reach the conclusions! This is one of my favorite series that I enjoy over and over!

Cold Bastard is my absolute favorite in the series because it left me speechless. This book….this book was so good! It was intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved everything about the two main characters. Archer is strong, smart heck-a good looking and British! Yes I said British!!! He is a muscular, tattooed suit wearing British speaking hottie!! Although he looks good in sweatpants as well. He is cold and emotionless until a little fireball known as Zoe shows up in his life. Zoe is a curvy little redhead with a smart mouth. She is supremely intelligent and takes nothing from anyone. I enjoyed how she was so body conscious…it made her seem more real. The back and forth between these two is electric! I could not get enough of their banter. I could never decide whether to read slower or faster. Either way was torture. This story did bring out many emotions while reading. I was irritated a few times along with shocked, worried and in awe. I usually am a fan of the male in the story but Zoe’s part was so good that I just am a fan of them both. Although Archer does pull ahead…because of that smexy British Accent!!

They are all just as delightful and sinfully sexy as Cold Bastard. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes back and forth banter between characters and intrigue, suspense and some drama.

This entire series was remarkable. I was so drawn to all the characters and the trials they each went through. As a family of sorts they stick together to fight their evil father.

Lost Bastard Book 1

WOW WOW WOW!!! This book had me on the brink throughout. This is the first book I have read from this amazing author India Kells. I will certainly be reading more. This book is based on the mob underworld and has so many twists and turns you will not be able to put it down. Lots of lack of sleep with this one. The character building is phenomenal and you get very attached to the main characters as well as sub characters. I loved Deva and her bravery and outspoken attitude. She is a woman that has come into her own after coming back to Chicago. Is there anyone that can be trusted? I got to a point in this book where there would be a happily ever after or would make me cry my eyes out. India Kells, bravo as this was an amazing read.

Cold Bastard Book 2

This was an amazing book. The characters had me feeling all kinds of things. I even cried. So many twists and turns, I was on the edge of my seat. The intensity is palpable between Zoe and Archer. Zoe comes to work for Archer as a dark sparrow to keep an eye on him. Danger is close as he tries to close a deal to sell his Oil and gas refineries. Finch is always in the background in this novel as well. Pulling strings and trying to bring down a bastard son of his. If you loved book one you will fall in love with this book as well. Be prepared to not want to put this book down though. I pulled a very late night. Onto book 3 as I can not get enough of this fabulous author and series.

Wild Bastard Book 3

Author India Kells does it again. This book was top notch. Isabel and Kai have met before and fell in love until she left without notice. Isabel had her reasons. After 15 years they are face to face again, pain and lost love brings back hurt and remorse to Isabel. Isabel is the black sparrow in this story and is put in close proximity to Finch. Finch wants to become Mayor of Chicago and enlists Isabel’s company to handle his campaign. I can not believe what happens in this book. Finch is worse than I ever thought. This story was a turning point in the series. I can’t wait to see what is going to happen in book 4. If you haven’t read this series, It is a must read.

True Bastard Book 4

In the continuing story of the Bastard Series, author India Kells sucks you into the story right from the start. I read this book so quickly. I loved the story of Liam and Catriona. Liam is a Chicago police officer and Catriona is a great money tracker. The brothers are recouping after their last run in with Finch but still working hard to bring him down. They place their hopes in Catriona to find where Finch is hiding his money so they can cut it off. She has her work cut out for her as danger begins to surround them. A few more characters are added to this story and brings a heart warming conclusion. On to book 5. I can’t wait to see what is going to happen. I am so invested in all these characters I will miss them when the series is done.
Dark Bastard Book 5

I am almost half way through the book and I am so angry at Finch. I wanted to throw my kindle across the room. I didn’t because I really need to know how this is going to turn out and well it’s my kindle. Ellie is a 911 operator and has nothing to do with this crazy world of treachery. She is on the brink of ending the non stop pain she is in emotionally when Sam calls her by mistake. One phone call may save them both or plunge them both into the beginning of a nightmare. Sam’s past comes to light in this novel and this man has suffered the obscene cruelties of life at the hands of his father. This was the first book in which a dark sparrow is not used. Gabrielle is not heard from at all. What is happening at that end? No one knows.

King Bastard Book 6

Loved Loved Loved this finale of this series. The eldest in the family and the doctor. The author was so dynamic in her story telling of this book. I literally could not put this book down. As always you get glimpses of all your favorite characters in this book as well. The closeness and struggles that come with most families. This book will have you riveted to your seat as you wait for the next foot to fall. The author does not disappoint in any way. This is a must read. I’m just sad that these wonderful characters have come to an end. I could read about them for much longer.
