Becoming Human by Amy Michelle Carpenter – Review by Kerry Baker

Becoming HumanBecoming Human by Amy Michelle Carpenter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Becoming Human by Amy Michelle Carpenter is a unique and intriguing story that captured my attention from the moment I started reading it. I loved the whole concept of the three characters and how they interlinked with each other. Told from the three different perspectives the book had a depth and complexity about it that, for me, made it more interesting to read.
This is the first book that I have ready by this author and I was really drawn in to her writing style. She wove the chapters and the characters together in a brilliant way and really made me get in to the storyline. The way the different chapters were written felt like they were done with such ease that the whole thing felt natural. The story progressed well and I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen.
Each of the characters had a great role to play. They all interacted well with each other and yet were strong enough to stand on their own. They all had their flaws and yet were strong enough to make this story work. This is a fantastic book and one I have thoroughly enjoyed. If you enjoy this genre then I would highly recommend it.

Wildfire (The Broken Bow Book 2)Wildfire by Ashley A Quinn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wildfire by Ashley A. Quinn is the second book in the Broken Bow series. This is the first book that I have read by this author so didn’t really know what to expect when it started it. What I got was a well written story with strong characters that really drew me in. I liked the suspenseful element to the book and how that was combined with the great chemistry between the two main characters.
After reading the description I wasn’t sure what direction the author might take with the book but I loved the track she went down. It was intriguing and gripping while also having an emotional side to it. I very much enjoyed this book and as the first by this author I thought I was a great was to be introduced to her. I will definitely be checking out more of her work in the future.

Second Chance eX-mas by N.D. Jackson – Review by Kerry Baker

Second Chance eX-masSecond Chance eX-mas by N.D. Jackson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Second Chance eX-mas by N.D. Jackson is a quick holiday romance that will really have you rooting for the characters. It is a great second chance story with just the right amount of holiday magic to make it feel special.
Although this is a pretty quick read – it is a novella after all – the book doesn’t feel like there is anything missing or it has been rushed. The author has managed to create a short story with a full storyline to it. I loved that I could really get behind the characters and couldn’t wait to see how they would work things out. Even with so much between them it felt right that they should end up together in some way!
This isn’t the first book that I have read by this author and it definitely won’t be the last either. She really has a great way of creating brilliant stories and this one is no exception. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who was a nice quick read to get them in the holiday spirit.

Revel (The Howl Series, #1)Revel by Alden Elway
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Revel by Alden Elway is a fast paced story with a level of intrigue thrown in for good measure. The story is mysterious and engaging and really keeps your attention from start to finish. My favourite part of the book had to be the main character Revel. I thought she was so interesting to read about, a strong and independent character that seemed to be really going on a journey.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I enjoyed the writing style throughout. The author knows just when to push the story forward and when to dive more into the detail. She has created a complex and interesting character in Revel and has definitely found the perfect way to leave you, as the reading, wanting more. My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Bake Believe by Cori Cooper is a fun and entertaining children’s story that I really think will appeal to readers of all ages. The author has created a story that is perfectly written for the age it is intended for but also has a deeper level that makes it perfect for those of other ages too.
I thought the whole book was a light-hearted and fun story. It was great to learn about Cat and her family secret and see how that played out throughout the book. Cat was so interesting to read about – she is the perfect example of what it is like to be her age and it was so easy to picture being right there next to her.
I also loved the addition of the recipes throughout the book – I thought it was unique and a great way to make the book stand out. I would definitely recommend this book and it is one I thoroughly enjoyed.

Rick: Ingram Brothers #3 by Roz Lee – Review by Kerry Baker

Rick (Ingram Brothers #3)Rick by Roz Lee
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rick by Roz Lee is the third book in the Ingram Brothers series. This is a book can be read as a standalone and is a great example of someone finding the strength to just be themselves. I think the author has done a great job of portraying the struggle within Rick. It feels like he is a realistic and engaging character and it was so easy to be drawn into his story. The conflict you could see him just made him all the more interesting to read about.
The story itself was well written and it had been developed in just the right way. The story built when it was needed but the author managed to stay true to the characters she had written as well. I thought it was well paced and very easy to get into.
This is the first book that I have read by this author but it definitely won’t be the last – and I will be starting with the previous books in this series for sure!

This is yet another fantastic addition to a brilliant series and is easily my favourite one so far. This also has to be one of the best holiday stories that I have read. It has the right amount of holiday cheer and story depth to make it more than just a Christmas story. CLAIM ME NOW (Heron Harbor Book 2) by Lea Nolan – Review by Kerry Baker

Claim Me NowClaim Me Now by Lea Nolan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Claim Me Now by Lea Nolan is the second book in the Heron Harbor series. This book can be read as a stand-alone and is a great story with strong and interesting characters.
I always love a story when the characters don’t know the full extent of who the other is so I was excited to start reading this book. Jack and Raven worked so well together. They had such a strong chemistry right from the moment they met. Their journey was one that had highs and lows which only made them more interesting to read about. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen when they discovered the truth about each other.
The overall story I thought was well written. The author has a found balance between developing the story and providing a level of detail to keep your attention. This isn’t the first book that I have read by this author but it is definitely one of my favourites. I will definitely be going back to read the first book in this series and I would recommend this book to anyone.

Antipodes by T.S. Simons – Review by Kerry Baker

AntipodesAntipodes by T.S. Simons
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Antipodes by T.S. Simons is a YA dystopian novel that is intriguing from start to finish. It is the kind of book that could appeal to anyone as it is a well written story with interesting characters. Although a dystopian novel it is the type of book that could easily be imagined as happening as it is based on values and concerns that are out in the world today.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I liked the style of writing they have. There is an attention to detail that you don’t always see in YA books which I think made it more accessible and engaging. It made me think more than I expected it would do which just kept my attention more easily. I do think this book would be suitable for a wide range of people and it is one I would certainly recommend.

Cemetery Tour: A Walk Through the Old YardCemetery Tour: A Walk Through the Old Yard by Stuart Ledwith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cemetery Tour: A Walk Through the Old Yard by Stuart Ledwith is a fascinating collection of ghosts stories inspired by the authors walks through a graveyard.
I found the whole book to be interesting and a well put together collection. This book is less “heavy” and series than other books I have read by him but it was no less well written. Each story was different to the last which made it all the more compelling, especially when you get to 13 1/2 which is about the author himself.
While not something I would necessarily pick up usually this book was a brilliant book to read and I would definitely recommend it!

Yule Lads Legend: Iceland’s Jólasveinar by Heidi Herman – Review by Kerry Baker

Yule Lads Legend: Iceland's JolasveinarYule Lads Legend: Iceland’s Jolasveinar by Heidi Herman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Yule Lads Legend: Iceland’s Jolasveinar by Heidi Herman is a lovely “untraditional” Christmas story that is really heart warming and unique. This isn’t the usual story that everyone will know and associate with Christmas, instead focusing on an Icelandic tradition. I really enjoyed reading this to my daughter as it gave a little extra something to the build up to Christmas.
This book is definitely one that will become a yearly tradition for us. Not only is it fun and entertaining to read but it is a fantastic way to introduce children to the ways in which other cultures celebrate this time of year. My daughter loved the story which alone would have been enough to make me read it again however I also found it appealing and enjoyed every moment. This is a brilliant book and one I would recommend!

Cuckoo Clock – New York by Elisabeth Marrion is the third book in the Unbroken Bonds series. This is a well written and detailed story that once I had started I just couldn’t put down. It was such an interesting novel set in an interesting time in history. The author has created a vivid tale that will have you feeling like you are part of the characters journey.
The characters were such strong people to read about and they really added to the overall story. Both of them complimented each other well and it made the story that much stronger. This isn’t an author I am overly familiar with but if this is an example of what all her work is like then I am definitely going to be an avid fan.
This book is absolutely worth reading and I would recommend you getting it today!

Love Heels: The TV News business can be murder by Lynne Russell is the third book in the PJ Santini series. This series can be read out of order as the stories are all stand-alone however since they follow the same character I would recommend reading them in order to get the full background and build up.

Starvation by Molly Fennig – Review by Kerry Baker

StarvationStarvation by Molly Fennig
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Starvation by Molly Fennig is a book that will completely take over your senses and leave you reeling page after page after page. It is dark and emotional and feels so real it is genuinely frightening at times. Why? Because it speaks about subject that is so emotional and yet happens every day without people realising. The author delves into a world that is foreign to a lot of us and yet so true so many more. The fact that it is told from the POV of a teenage boy just creates a bigger impact and a more lasting impression.
For me this book stayed with me long after I had finished reading it. I felt so connected to Wes and his journey. This book is so emotional and really pushes you as the readers to think beyond what you would normally see. This was a well written book that was crafted perfectly. I would highly recommend this book to absolutely everyone!

Hunted by Sarah Biglow and Molly Zenk is a collaboration between two fantastic authors which has resulted in a great fantasy story that will really grab your attention. I loved the combination of fantasy and geek with the LARP storyline, it isn’t something I recall seeing before but I definitely enjoyed the way they were brought together in this book.
The characters were strong and really connected well. Their worlds were completely adverse to one another and yet the way they tried to make something work was great to see.
I have read both of these authors previously and I loved the fact that they have combined their talents to produce this gem. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book and I hope to see more of them together in the future.

Lies That Bind (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 6)Lies That Bind by Valerie Davisson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lies that Bind by Valerie Davisson is the sixth book in the Logan McKenna mystery series. This book could be read on its own however I would say that ideally you should read them in order as the series follows the same characters. Reading them out of order would, for me, lose a lot of the build up and fantastic character development.
This series honestly just keeps getting better and better. Each time I read a book I think that surely the author can’t beat it and yet each time she does just that. I loved the intrigue and the classic tale you get with this book. It was a gripping story and I found the whole book to be edgy and exciting.
I love getting back into Logan and her life each time with these books. I don’t think I could ever get bored of her character! The author really has done an amazing job of creating lasting connections with the characters and this book just highlights that even more.
The Lies That Bind has to be my favourite of the series so far and I am really hoping we get to see more from this series.
