Stepbrother (Step Dilemma Series Book 1) by Stacy McWilliams – Review by Kerry Carr

Stepbrother: Step Dilemma Series Book 1Stepbrother: Step Dilemma Series Book 1 by Stacy McWilliams
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow this book is such a roller coaster of emotions I couldn’t keep up. It is a heartbreaking story with regards to the abuse they suffer at the hands of Shawn (dad/stepdad) but the feelings and emotion between Bailey and Cooper brings you back to a place of love and happiness despite everything.

Bailey lives with her mum after her dad left them and her brother died in a car accident. Her life gets turned upside down though when her mum marries Shawn and introduces 2 stepbrothers into her life.

Cooper seems to hate her. He is always tormenting her and causing her harm but things aren’t what they seem.

Copper and Bailey are attracted to each other. Their feelings are so strong they have to fight to overcome them. With Shawn being a violent bully who beats them both for ever speaking to each other there is no way they can act on their feelings.

Through all the highs and lows in this story can they defeat everything and be together or will they be forced to live a lie and continue to receive the beatings whenever their dad/stepdad thinks they are needed.

Spring's Calling (Seasons of Magic, #1)Spring’s Calling by Sarah Biglow
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was an amazing adventure containing two of my favourite things, murders and paranormal.

Erzi is a newly appointed detective who’s job become a lot harder when she is faced with people being murdered. There seems to be no connection between the victims but Erzi can sense dark magic and feels that is the connection.
However she can’t voice this to her colleagues as magic and being able to do magic is unheard of by normal humans.

But Ezri isn’t a normal human. She is a witch and the last in the bloodline of Harrow witches. Not only does she have to deal with her job, she also has the pressure of knowing that she is the saviour who needs to defeat the dark magic that is rising.

Add all this stress her need to find out the truth of what happened and why her mum was murdered and this story is gripping and compelling.

Can she stay strong enough to find out who is committing these murders? Can she defeat the dark forces? And who can she trust? Her magical family who deceived her over her mother’s death or her police family who don’t know her secrets.

Hansel & Gretel (Down the Rabbit Hole) Anthology – Review by Kerry Carr

Hansel & Gretel: Down the Rabbit HoleHansel & Gretel: Down the Rabbit Hole by Autumn Sand
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this collection of stories all with a different take on the classic story of Hansel and Gretel. My two favourites are The Witch In the Woods by Amy Allen and The Surface by CeeCee Elaine.

The Witch in the Woods turns the story of Hansel and Gretel around. So instead of focusing on the children, it focuses on the story of the “witch”.
Morgause is a Fae who is sent to the human realm with twin babies, one boy and one girl on the orders of the king. What she didnt realise was that this was all a lie made up by the kings son to get rid of her. But that wasnt the whole story.
She is left on earth keeping watch over the children Cory and Sydni, getting more angry at her situation as the years wear on. Until King Bayard comes to see her and the true story about his love for her and the children comes to light.
As the children grow will they embrace their true parent and their home in the Fae realm or will they want to stay in the human realm with parents who don’t care for them.
It is a story full of lies and deceit but with happiness and love at the end.

The Surface is a completely different story and one i wasnt expecting, even though i enjoyed it.

There is a virus killing people on the surface so all the survivers go to live in a bunker underground. Among them are Hansel and Gretel. Hansel is taken in after his mother and father pass away from the virus and Gretel was found wandering alone, lost and naked with no family.

They form a relationship but things arent right Gretel isnt what she seems and the love they share will be the undoing of Hansel. Its a gripping horror story that keeps you guessing all the way through.

This is a great look at a true crime that happened in Cincinnati. Leah Marcus was a popular, bright, talented young girl who was found murdered in her home. She had been raped, strangled and hit over the head.

The police look at several suspects but DNA evidence points to her boyfriend Damon. But is his story about having sexual intercourse with her the day before the murder true or a story hes made up to cover his tracks.

The writer delves into the case and produces an informative book about the case, the evidence and the outcome.

This book has 2 stories inside.

The first one called Every Last Thought is a real hard story to read. It contains themes such as mental illness, rape and drug and alcohol abuse. Although these are hard subject to read about it has been written with respect. We follow the journey of Tess. A teenage girl who suffers from schizophrena. She struggles with life as the voices in her head make life hard. So she uses alcohol and eventually drugs to cope with it. Its a heartbreaking and also an eye opening story.

Great grades, a perfect boyfriend, good friends. However she hides a secret from everyone. She doesnt care.
