My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was really excited to read more of Rocky’s story after finishing his first story in Risa Nyman’s first book, SWALLOWED BY A SECRET. This book really brought to life more of his future and did exactly what I had hoped it would. I loved seeing him in his older child years, my favorite years as a child. He navigated through some really difficult times and did so beautifully, well Ms. Nyman wrote them beautifully. This book is one that I feel can be enjoyed by both children and parents alike. I think I relate well as a parent of young kids, teens and I think that my teen daughter will also relate well with the characters. This is one that just hits all the notes there and that is not an easy task to accomplish, so well done Ms. Nyman. I do hope we will see more from her in the future of similar style. I for sure would be interested in reading them.

Jake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail (Jake the Growling Dog Book 3) by Samantha Shannon – Review by Chrissy Spulak

Jake the Growling Dog Shares His TrailJake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail by Samantha Shannon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail (Jake the Growling Dog Book 3) by Samantha Shannon has once again stolen my heart. Much like the first two books, book number three touches on so many good lessons for young children to learn, and shares them in a way that will resonate with anyone. When Jake fears to encounter anything new on the hiking trail that he built, he must learn that difference isn’t always bad. This book teaches children the importance of sharing and including others. This is a wonderful book series to give and share with your children, no matter how old they are. Furthermore, the author is a licensed counselor, and her background in education only adds to the credibility of this series. My daughter is one and truly enjoys looking at the colorful pictures and hearing about Jake and his friends. 5 out of 5 stars for Jake!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Twelve year old Rocky and his mom move in with his grandpa after his father passed away. Ironically enough, it’s not his dad’s passing that bothers him the most. He can still talk to his dad, but he wants to know why a perfectly healthy person’s heart just stops working. That just doesn’t make sense to Rocky and it doesn’t sit right with him. So, he gets Olive to help him figure out the big secret he believes his mom is hiding.

As an adult reading this book, having gone through the struggles of loved ones passing, I can say with absolute certainty that it would help bring someone comfort in hard times. I know it would have for me. It’s a novel I would recommend to anyone: big, small, old, young.

Spooked by a Suspicion is a fun middle-school age book that kept this adult’s interest all the way through. 13-year-old Rocky is caught by surprise when his mom introduces him to her fiancée, who seems to come with a whole host of changes that Rocky isn’t ready for. He’s an interesting teen dealing with a lot of upheaval, and takes an immediate distrust to the enigmatic Ted. I loved reading about Rocky’s brilliant imagination, and him plotting with his friend Olive to get to the bottom of all of the odd coincidences that seem to surround his mom’s new beau. There’s lots going on in the story, and I think most kids around the same age would appreciate the characters and plot of this book.

This book was great! Reading it, I was thinking about elementary and middle schoolers reading it. The conflict was super relatable for that age. The friendships that were shown, and the familial relationships showed were realistic. Rocky’s imagination and his adversity to change is very much like any kid at thirteen whose world feels like it’s imploding. It was a fun read and I would definitely recommend it, and have recommended it to kiddos I’ve talked to through work.

Spooked by a Suspicion is the second book I’ve read by Risa Nyman and the second time
I’ve met the main character, Rocky. This is a sequel to Swallowed by a Secret but would read well without reading anything prior. While written to be aimed towards a younger audience, Spooked by a Suspicion reeled me in. I enjoyed the storytelling from Rocky’s perspective and I felt like I was in the shoes of the young teen boy. I haven’t dealt with my parents moving on but Risa Nyman created a character in Rocky that was very relatable. I could really see this story appealing to teens. The storyline flowed well from beginning to end with imagery that
made me feel like I was sitting amongst close friends more than once. I would
give Spooked by a Suspicion 4 stars and greatly look forward to more from this author.

Spooked by a Suspicion is the second book about Rocky and his adventures. Rocky has been through some rough times. He is going through the transformation from middle school to high school. If that was not bad enough, his mother tells everyone she will be marrying Ted. Rocky has gone through a lot but now he is getting accused of stealing. Is someone else playing with Rocky’s life? Is Ted out to get him? This plotline held my attention because I felt the need to see what happens to Rocky. The characters are fully developed and complex in nature. With all good books, I needed to see what Rocky’s fate had in store for him. I highly recommend this book.

Spooked by a Suspicion is the follow up novel to Swallowed by a Secret. We once again join Rocky as he continues to navigate his ever changing life. This story begins with his mother announcing she is getting married to Ted! Rocky sees Ted as evil–setting him up for failure, sabotaging him every chance he gets! He has to show him mom who Ted really is before it’s too late!

Risa Nyman has done it again! With this second novel involving Rocky, his relationship with Olive has grown, he has adjusted to his new school, and is even winning awards there. But Ted seems to throw a wrench into everything. Full of suspicion, mystery, suspense, and adventure, this book is just as good as the first of the series! Rocky faces challenges that any teen could face, and his feelings are portrayed in a realistic and relatable way. Great writing! 5/5 Stars!

SWALLOWED BY A SECRET by Risa Nyman – Review by Kayla Bullock

Swallowed by a SecretSwallowed by a Secret by Risa Nyman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Swallowed by a Secret by Risa Nyman introduces us to Rocky, a spunky 12 year old who recently lost his father.  With the passing of his father, Rocky’s mother moves him to a new town to live with his grandpa.  While trying to adjust to his new home, new school, and life without his father, Rocky overhears a shocking secret.  Rocky’s dad didn’t really die because “his heart stopped.”  This sends Rocky on an investigation to discover the truth about his father’s death and why he isn’t allowed to return to his hometown.

Swallowed by a Secret is a fantastic novel that deals with a very heavy subject.  I believe it could be helpful to millions of teens around the world to read about Rocky’s adventure and what he discovers.  Accepting things about those we love can be hard, but in the end, Rocky knows his father loved him and that he was  great person.  Full of teen angst over normal things like a new school, all the way up to adjusting to life without his father, Rocky is a wonderfully developed character.  His friendship with Olive is fun, and shows what a  true friend should be.  I loved this story! 5/5 Stars!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jake the Growling Dog Shares his Trail is the third book in the Jake The Growling Dog Series. Jake loves taking walks down his favorite trail but one day while out for a walk with his friend Neet, they stumble onto something different that scares them. Jake and his friend Neet are worried about the discovery and find it hard to sleep. Jake’s friends Bodhi and Luna come over to play and decide to help their friend, so he does not have to worry alone. The friends set out for an adventure together to figure out what this strange discovery was that Jake discovered on his favorite trail.

Jake The Growling Dog shares his trail is a beautifully written story and the author does an amazing job teaching her readers valuable life lessons. Samantha Shannon describes through her characters the power of friendship and how we are never truly alone if we have friends by our side. Through Jake and his friends, she says that being different is okay and that everyone gets scared sometimes but that is okay too. Samantha Shannon gives some great tips and resources at the end of the book for both parents and children. I highly recommend this book for young and old alike.

My son absolutely loved this book! We start out with Jake and Neet exploring a trail when Jake notices suspicious tracks. Both he and Neet become scared, imagining scary beasts! But thanks to a few other dog friends, Jake is able to find the source of the tracks and overcome the fear.
This book is an easy read but tackles a tough issue for kids! This helped my son to explore his fears and learn to overcome them. I definitely recommend parents of young children to buy this book!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

While Spooked by a Suspicion is not advertised as a sequel, it follows Swallowed by a Secret. They could be read and enjoyed independently, but both are good books, so you should just read them. Despite this book being targeted to children readers (likely middle school age), I enjoyed it as an adult. I enjoyed the first book, so I was happy to hear there was a second book, so we could see more into Rocky’s life. This book centers around a difficult issue kids may encounter, but in a humorous way. Rocky’s mom drops the bomb that she is seeing someone new, and they plan to get married. Rocky didn’t even know they were officially dating, so this was a shock to him. Shortly after the announcement, strange things start to happen. Rocky is very imaginative, and comes to the conclusion his mom’s boyfriend is the cause of these things, and takes it upon himself to stop him. These things range from serious, a sports injury, to funny, being pooped on by a bird. Poor Rocky! We are led through a series of twists and turns on his summer vacation, and it teaches kids some life lessons in an entertaining way. I love the story and Risa Nyman’s style. The characters are all very fun and realistic, and can be enjoyed by all ages.

I loved this book as much as the first one in this series. These stories portray how real problems can be for a young teen boy. This might be a story for the young but I seriously enjoyed it and I believe it was because of the writing style of this author. She makes you want to read more after every page.

I have to admit I went back and forth as Rocky struggled with his mom’s impending marriage and the man she chose to marry. I truly had no idea how this story was going to end, and was thrilled with how it all played out. Rocky learned a great lesson about communication in this story and how important it is.

I love the friendship and family aspect of these stories, and have already recommended these for reading by a couple of my grands.

Can’t wait for more from this author.

What a great children’s book. It touches so many children’s feelings and fears. We all know there are several aspects to a person’s life. All the things that make us us. Things we can not keep from our children as they are right out in front of us. How we handle the questions and ease the fear, this story could help sometimes we need extra. This is just that book.
Samantha Shannon has taken the time to write this book, plan for those questions. She has also found things for parents to follow up with. All listed in the back of her book. This is a teacher’s delight as well. So many things will be discussed in this one children’s book. It is a must read for everyone. Parents, Teachers, Preschools and Schools. I was first introduced to the twelve year old Rocky in ‘Swallowed by a Secret’ just after his father had died suddenly and in mysterious circumstances, this story follows Rocky during his transition from middle school to high school. However, Rocky is more concerned with the shocking news that his mother is going to marry the devious Ted who apparently has a “devil’s beard, ominous eyebrows in constant motion, and black, beady eyes” according to Rocky. When Rocky has a few strange accidents he is convinced that Ted is somehow behind them, maybe using his evil powers. Rocky makes plans with his girlfriend Olive to have a showdown with Ted after he starts working at Rocky’s summer program. Before this can happen Rocky is accused of stealing and thinks that Ted is framing him, but thinking that no one will believe him he runs off into the woods. Here he meets an old hermit who tells Rocky about his tragic life and urges Rocky to return and prove his innocence. Rocky is determined to clear his name and then plan a case against Ted in the hopes of stopping the wedding.

This is an enjoyable and engaging YA novel with a very likeable and relatable, especially if your a teenager yourself, main character Rocky. I also love Rocky and Olive’s relationship. The storyline flows well and the mystery element of the plot kept me happily turning the pages. The novel deals with teenagers issues, in particular having a stepparent introduced into their lives and I found looking at this from Rocky’s point of view very intriguing. I was fully immersed in the story and thought it was an insightful read.

I love these stories so much! I read this one to my little boy and even though he is only 2 he loved looking at the pictures and shouting dog every time he saw Jake! The storyline for this book was great and for older children there are so many times you can stop and discuss what is going on. Its definitely a wonderful way to get children thinking and especially at times when children face new things in their lives for example starting school and worrying about new friendships.
I love these books and hope that there will be another Jake adventure to read about soon!

I really enjoyed the first book that I read by this author o when I saw this sone pop up I couldn’t wait to get started and I wasn’t disappointed. The author’s writing is really engaging and I find her characters so easy to read about. They are well thought out and planned. I really felt like I was trying to solve what was going on alongside Rocky and his girlfriend. Although this is a young adult read, I really enjoyed it and definitely feel that readers of all ages would enjoy it. The storyline is engaging but not overly complex for younger readers to enjoy and I think they would definitely find the characters good to red about.
I am definitely looking forward to reading more from this author again in the future.

Spooked by a Suspicion by Risa Nyman is an adventure story for preteens / teens aged around 9 -12 years old. This is the second book in this series and follows Rocky life and navigating where he fits into his mother’s and her husband to be lives. The story is really fast paced and interesting. When strange things keep happening around him Rocky and Olive decide to do a bit of amateur sleuthing to find out if the evil step Dad is behind it or not. A little drama, a little mystery and a lot of unknowns.

Spooked by a Suspicion by Risa Nymen is the second book in this series. We are back to following Rocky in his journey, this time navigating the world of stepfathers. Rocky seems to have been through so much, and still seems to be going through a lot. I thought this was reflecting in the story telling and how fast paced the book seemed to be. Something always seemed to be happening which really kept your interest.
This book is definitely aimed at a pre-teen age but it has enough depth that I can appeal to all audiences. This is a great book and a strong follow up to book one.

This is the second book I have read by this author which I enjoyed just as much as the first one. This is a young adult story about Rocky and what happens when he is accused of stealing. He is a young man who has plans until his suspicions that Ted is trying to frame him. What will happen to him? Will he prove his innocence and prove that Ted is really behind this? I enjoyed his character and what he brought to the story. The secondary characters gave great support. They all kept the story engaging and wanted to know what would happen next to them. This is well written and the realistic feel and details are great. I really enjoyed this book and it would be great for any young adult. I highly recommend this book.

Rocky. No, not the professional fighter. Rocky, the kid from Manhattan that figures out life is not as easy as it seems. When his mom brings up the idea of Ted, also known as Det, being in their lives forever, Rocky begins his detective work in his case against Ted. Rocky cannot fathom another man trying to steal the place of his father.

A truly moving novel, Nyman brings Rocky to life for many kids that go through the struggle of a new family member. Whether it is divorce, or in Rocky’s situation, his father passing and his mom finding a new boyfriend. I truly believe this novel could be life-changing for many children experiencing similar situations.

I have fallen in love with this whole set of Jake’s books. I have a few grandchildren that will have this set sitting in their rooms.

The message conveyed in this book is so completely relevant especially in the world today and the conversation guide at the end was spot on for helping the adults lead the discussion after reading it with the kids. I love this and really believe these should be part of a school’s reading curriculum or at the very least part of reading time at home.

The illustrations were amazing and I believe will make storytime that much more fun and meaningful. The importance of friendship was also very strong in this story and was written in a way that young children will completely understand.

I loved this and I love that this author has gone that extra mile for our kids!

This is the series I loved from the very beginning and even have had my boys read all the books. The graphics is amazing and the message given is very cute and clear. In this book, Jake and Neet, his best friend, find some strange tracks on their regular hiking trail. Jake gets frightened and lets his imagination go wild. He loses his sleep over the strange tracks. But along with few other friends, brave as they are, they decide to investigate. They find who the culprit is and figure out that what they thought was not what it is. A sweet story of inclusion and acceptance, this book is a jewel in the series. Highly recommended.

Jake the Growling Dog Shares His Trail by Samantha Shannon was wonderful! I personally don’t have kids, but I babysit a lot and have friends with kids so we try to keep books in the house for when they stop by or spend the night. The illustrations were perfect to keep the attention of kids, the message was heart- warming and kind, and the words weren’t the pee-wee words in some kids books.

Samantha uses words like mayhem and churning, which is one of the things I absolutely look for in books for kids! But she also tackles disability in an accepting way. But this book 100% rates 15 out of 5 because of the breakdown they give at the end! She walks us through steps to help lessen while still accepting our fears. Great book! Especially for new parents!!
