I enjoyed this book. This is a new author for me which I enjoyed reading and look forward to reading more from her in the future. This is a story that is written with a lot of heart. The author used details that gave the story a realistic feel. The characters are connectable and made the story come to life on each page. This is a story that combines fantasy, life and death. Andy takes on a magical adventure that teaches about letting go and forgiveness. It took me on an emotional roller coaster ride but it was a ride I gladly went on. This is a great story and I highly recommend it.

Coyote Summer by Laura Koerber – Review by Kendra Aubry

Coyote SummerCoyote Summer by Laura Koerber
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Coyote Summer is Laura Koerber’s new coming-of-age novel set in Wisconsin. Ben O’Rourke and his classmates are raised in wealth and privilege; they all attend private school with future plans for Ivy League schools and similar career paths as their parents. Ben and his friends go out to a wild party to celebrate graduation, and that’s when his life intersects with Claire from the girl’s private school. When Ben wakes up the next morning, he finds out that Claire was assaulted at the party and no one is talking about what happened. Around the same time, Ben meets Puppy Hill and her unconventional family. This family could not be any more unlike the type of people that Ben has always been surrounded by; the Hill family is salt of the earth and in touch with nature rather than materialism. Ben’s encounter with each of these girls is what ignites his awakening, an awakening that allows Ben to see the world beyond the glamour that has always surrounded his life. This book had some of the same ennui that Holden demonstrated in “Catcher in the Rye,” but Ben grows beyond his wealthy upbringing and becomes more aware of the advantages that come with affluence. Puppy Hill and her family are the beautiful antithesis of materialism and show Ben a purer way of living, lessons he calls upon throughout the remainder of his life.

Great introduction of a new to me Author.
Coyote Summer is a book that gives us a very thought provoking point of view of a tragic event that is unfortunately an everyday occurence in today’s society. Ben witnesses the sexual assault of a high school girl and then struggles to come to terms with what he saw. I absolutely loved the fact that the Author brought us this story from a male perspective.
Ben is also in a strange relationship with a fascinating girl, with a completely different upbringing than him. This is a completely different coming of age story with excellent characters and amazing depth.
The only thing that was a miss for me was the supernatural aspect. But it doesn’t take away from the great story.

I still don’t know how I feel about Coyote Summer by Laura Koerber. It is the first I have read by her, and as much as I want to love it, I have mixed feelings. (Side note- This description is so much better than the one on AZON) The story was great, until about halfway through, then I don’t even know what happened. Literally- I still don’t quite understand what was real, exaggerated, dreamed, hallucinated, etc. The book is centered around Ben’s senior year and a series of events that changed his life. Claire’s assault stuck with Ben forever, and changed who is was as a person. It made him question his life, his friends, his morals, everything. And I love that- We saw how Ben changed his way of thinking, struggled with his feelings, and matured into a young adult. However, everything surrounding Puppy and her family, I’m still iffy on. I feel like the author had 2 story ideas, and mashed them together- and I don’t think it worked well. At least for me. I really want to love it… the writing in the first half, I loved. It is written primarily inside Ben’s head and his feelings. I felt his internal struggle to figure out right from wrong. To break away from friends he has had his whole life. To question his family’s way of life, and what being part of it means. But, seeing other reviews, it seems it is a love or hate for most. So, Read the book, and decide for yourself. I hope to read another book by this author and see if I love it more.

This is the first book that I have read from this author and she now has a new fan. This book is a coming of age book of a young man getting ready to go to college. I absolutely love paranormal books but this author exceeded all my expectations. I was hooked on this story in the first chapter. I could not put it down until I finished the whole book. I can’t wait to see what this author will write next.

This story takes place in the 80s which is when I was born. Ben O’Rourke has been working his butt off to get into the school of his dreams. He is so excited that he is going to be going to Yale which is one of the best. Ben goes to a party that changes his life. He finds out that his friends were never really friends at all. Ben meets a girl that he can’t stop thinking about, Puppy. He sees that she is not the same like most girls but he doesn’t care. Ben is head over heels with this girl but when he finds out her little secret will Ben believe in her or will he run?

Coyote Summer by Laura Koerber is a coming of age book that deals with hard issues, teen drinking, rape, peer pressure and a host of other issues. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Koerber. I enjoyed the writing if not the issues. The story had me feeling like I was right there in Ben’s world. I also enjoyed the fantasy element in this book. I would definitely like to read more from this author.

This is a fantasy novel and comes in around 230 pages. This does touch a bit on rape, so reader beware as this could be a trigger for some. This story follows Ben, Clint, and Claire as they grow up together. They were all supposed to grow up and become something. But one fateful night proves to change their lives forever. I felt this was a great coming of age story and the choices younger ones must make and the possible impacts of their future.

I loved reading the book Coyote Summer by Laura Koerber. It is a story that pulled me in and didn’t let me go until the final page. I loved the well-developed characters. The author does an amazing job of making the storyline and the characters come alive. This is a fantasy book that grabs your attention, and the book seems to be over too soon. The story takes you on a journey that you will not soon forget. The story has a bit of mystery. It also talks about friendship and the past. The author weaves a tale that is exciting, intriguing, interesting, and seemed to end too soon. Don’t miss out on reading it. I highly recommend it.

When an event in your life imbeds itself in your head, will there ever be a time you can forgive yourself.

Ben is a preppy kid who is a bit shy and vulnerable but he wants to fit with the popular kids and strives to be accepted. Although he is friends with Clint, Ben’s parents are trying to keep up with Joneses and loves that their son is friends with the congressman’s son, but this friendship will be put to the test one night.

As they attend a party, everyone is getting drunk and stoned but as the night goes on Ben sees Claire, a girl who he has a drunk conversation with and when she excuses herself after a while he decides to go to the bathroom where he stumbles upon a scene which makes him sick. He sees Claire totally out of it and Clint assaulting without her knowledge or consent. As Ben wrestles with the scene in front of him he tries to step in and stop the heinous crime that has happened. After that night Ben can not get the scene out of his head and always wonder if he could have done more to help.

Roll forward and Ben and Clint are still friends but the past has come to haunt both of them, can Ben stand up for himself or will the past eat him up forever?

I have to start off that this is not normally a genre I read and was wondering if I would be able to read the book due to the contents, but I am glad in a way that I persisted and got through it. I have two say that I feel this book is of two halves, the first half through the trials of the assault and the heartbreak around that, with the soul searching from Ben knowing that he needs to disconnect from Clint with his toxic nature. The second half of the book was a bit out there and although the feeling of the book did not change, I felt this was a strange turn of events within the story.

Aside from this I really enjoyed the book and although some people may be put off by the content of rape it was written with care and my heart went out for Claire. Although I had a hard time relating to Ben and his turmoil, I did understand the elements which got him to that point and that the soul searching in the end helped him become who he wanted to be. Although this is not normal for me I did enjoy the story and would read other books by this author.

Coyote Summer by Laura Koerber is a coming of age story that explores a whole range of topics. It is all centred around Ben, a privileged student who is trying to navigate some difficult situations. I thought it was interesting that I really didn’t connect with this character – or particularly like him – and yet he was exactly the right character for the story. His perspective made the story feel more real.
There were parts of the book that felt a bit disjointed. For me the supernatural element didn’t really feel necessary or particularly relevant. However the overall story was interesting and definitely held my attention. I liked how it explored the darker side of growing up how to deal with difficult and dark situations. This book is definitely one worth reading.

Coyote Summer by Laura Koerber was an interesting read. As I saw another reviewer say in regards to this book, it held a lot of potential that just wasn’t tapped into. One thing I felt this book needed was a trigger warning. I didn’t see one at the beginning, and there is some sensitive content that some people I feel should be aware of. I felt like I was reading two separate novels, instead of one. The content was well throughout, but I feel like it would have been better split between two novels instead of putting it into one. I also felt like a lot of events went unresolved, and if not really that then that a lot went unexplained. I feel this novel could have been a lot better than what it was. I guess I was just expecting more? Or maybe just thrown off from something. But this was a novel that could grab you. It was very well written. Which is why I’m giving it 4 stars. I would definitely read more from this author in the future.

Coyote Summer by Laura Koerber. This book is very emotional and could have some emotional impact on some. Its the story of Ben who is a very wealthy family so he attends a very wealthy private school where you are meant to become a very wealthy successful adult. During the summer after graduation he attends a party where everyone is drinking and doing drugs. Ben is very insecure so he falls right in line with all the partying. He meets a girl named Claire and talks to her most of the evening when he goes to find her to ask her a question he finds her passed out on the bed with several of his friends raping her. He locks the door and flees which ends up haunting him still 40 years later. Finding out that Claire has never married makes him feel even worse. Could he have changed that by helping her that night. Where his friends really that shallow and horrible that they think they could treat people anyway they want? Sometimes privilege is not all its cracked up to be. Even though he wasn’t the one who attacked Claire he is still reeling from that night. Wonderful coming of age story but could have triggers.

This is the story of a summer, a summer unlike any other in Ben O’Rourke’s life and one which will change his life forever and one which is brought back to him while he makes a phone call 36 years after it occurred. Ben is the typical white prep school privileged boy who has gotten into an Ivy League College and is in a group of friends who are the same and made to grow up and live lives like their privileged parents

It is the summer of 1983 and Ben has just graduated from high school and is going to parties with his friend Clint and the rest of the guys he hangs out with, but this one particular party, Ben has been getting stoned and drunk, he talks to people, one girl in particular, Claire talks to him longer than most, so while searching for her to tell him where the bathroom is, he accidentally falls upon something which is as distasteful to him as anything could be, but in his current state is nothing that he can do anything to help the girl involved, apart from to lock a door and hope for the best. After attending mass and trying unsuccessfully to concentrate on it, Ben decides to call his sister when he is alone in the house and ask for advice about the situation he cannot stop thinking about, but he is basically told to forget it ever happened and move on with his life, but when he finds out that it is Claire, he is even more disgusted with those involved.

As the days move ahead and graduation and homecoming are looming, thoughts turn to that and the holiday to Europe he is going on with his family, but Ben is still trying to avoid the girl, especially when their schools are collaborating on the school events and when they are both over, Ben, Clint and their friends head to another wild party, but when Clint leaves him on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere after to make his own way home. As he is trying to walk around, he experiences some unusual things and blames the things he sees on all the drink and drugs he consumed at the party, fortunately, he is saved from walking any further when he is picked up by two siblings, Puppy and her brother in a beaten up old truck, it turns out he was trespassing on their land, so he apologises and offers to pay for the petrol they used to take him home.

The next time he talks to Clint, it turns out that he wants to go and buy some flowers for his mum, so he agrees to go and so they go out of town to get them and it turns out that the girl who picked him up works their and the way Clint behaves around her is awful, makes Ben come to the realisation that maybe it isn’t a good thing to be friends with Clint if he treats him and others in that way. It is after this that Ben decides not to go on holiday with his family and that he needs the time to become used to being on his own instead, they aren’t happy about it but they agree and this is where Ben’s real summer starts.

This coming of age romance is a whirlwind of emotions and experiences which are well worth reading as you experience everything with Ben and relive the summer which changed his life.

This was an interesting coming of age story. It is written from a first person point of view and we follow Ben through his journey from leaving school to university and life beyond.

There is an event that happens just before he graduates which leaves him reeling and feeling guilt and remorse. He finds a young girl naked on the bed at a party and it seems she has been raped by several of the party goers.

Because of his response or lack of response he spends his life feeling guilt for his lack of action. And a promise he makes that summer comes back to haunt him.

The story twists and turns but it all revolves around that experience and how it made him feel and react. It was interesting to read the story from a witness to the crime and seeing how it affected him instead of just being the view of the victim and criminal.

Coyote Summer by Laura Koerber is a coming of age romance. Beware there may be triggers as the story delves into a lot of things but the main one is rape. I also thought that the story was a little all over the place and disconnected. Then there are the questionable morals and lack of conscience. The story is told in the POV of a young man. My emotions were all over the place with this one and unfortunately it didn’t tick the boxes for me.

Coyote Summer is truly the most unique book I’ve read in a very long time. It’s a coming-of-age story full of unexpected, intriguing and surprising moments. The story is written from the main characters POV, and I thought the author did a great job in portraying the young man’s thoughts and feelings. They seemed really true and honest for someone with his status and age.

Though I enjoyed this book I did at times feel lost and unsure of how everything was going to be connected as there are some magical realism aspects thrown into the storyline. They certainly weren’t my favorite part but they definitely kept me intrigued the whole way through.

I really enjoyed how this story kept me on my toes and had me feeling all kinds of emotions from start to finish. It’s a story I’ll never forget!

This is a story about a group of kids that society expected to be promident adults like their parents. What will happen when one tragic incident changes things for them? This story is written with a lot of emotion and I felt that through the characters as they bring the story to life. Coyote Summer by Laura Koerber is another original story with plenty of thought provoking content. Again, Ms. Koerber brings a realism and complete believability to her story- making you feel as if this actually happened. I was completely engrossed right off the bat.
The story does centre around a sensitive topic, rape- but Ms. Koerber doesn’t use it gratuitously, but it is central to the story as a whole. This is ultimately a magical realism coming of age story- with drama, angst, and a first-person POV.
Ms. Koerber takes a different approach here, giving us the perspective of the male witness to a rape, Ben- as he struggles with what he saw, did, and didn’t do. His struggle with how to deal with it all is what really sets this book apart, and made for an intriguing read.
This story is an unusual blend of a character study, fantasy, coming of age, crime, a little mystery, and magical realism. I wasn’t sure of what I would make of it when I purchased it- but having read some of the author’s previous work I thought I would take a chance, and I am glad that I did.

Thank you, Laura Koerber!

The summer of magic happened forty years ago when Ben was just seventeen, but he’s never forgotten.
It started with rape and ended with a promise. In between things happened that Ben still didn’t understand. A man turned into a coyote, a girl danced in the air, Ben broke the law, and he fell in love for the first time.
And, when the summer ended, he made a promise that he now needs to keep.
Coyote Summer, a magical realism novel on a coming-of-age theme is about the aftermath of a sexual assault, but from the perspective of a male witness.
“The gist of the story is as listed above. But this doesn’t even touch on the beauty of the prose Koerber has a way with words, that is for sure. The imagery is staggeringly beautiful. The author paints with words. You can see, smell, taste, and hear as the lines leap off the page. … The prose, therefore, adds a beauty that transcends the darkness and reveals the light where it falls: in nature, in making right choices, in the good in the world, in healthy relationships, in standing up for the weak and powerless. ” Janelle Garret, Booknest

by Laura Koerber was a great 5 star read.

I had several emotional moments reading this book. I’m a HUGE dog lover and to read what these poor dogs went through at the hands of a hoarder just about killed me emotionally. Twilight put Forks on the map for most but this story has left a whole different feeling for me.

How could the town people not see what this man was doing? How could they protect him?

Daisy’s journey wasn’t easy and my heart really went out to her and the other fur babies that suffered, to see her finally get her HEA was great. I also liked how the author gave us an update on where some of the other rescues went. I will warn you that pictures and some things mentioned may be hard for some to see/read, I was in tears. This also opens your eyes to making sure you know just where your donations go and what rescue groups you support. Proceeds from this book are going to the OAS rescues which is great.

I Once Was Lost, But Now I’m Found is a heart breaking story written by Laura Koerber. It is the story of Daisy and the Olympic Animal Sanctuary Rescue. The story is based out of Forks, Washington, but this isn’t the make believe story of vampires and werewolves. It is the true story of 124+/- dogs that were living a nightmare in what was supposed to be a dog sanctuary. Koerber describes in this book the awful living situations these dogs were confined to, and their coordinated rescue. It focuses more details on a particular dog, Daisy, and her rescue owners. Instead of a good life in a no kill shelter, it was hell on earth. These dogs were packed in a warehouse, being fed uncooked meat every other day, and left often without water or human interaction for days at a time. They were not taken for walks, they were kept in cages too small to move around, and laying in their own filth. It is heart breaking to read about these conditions, but the story has a mostly happy ending. When you read this book, have a box of tissues near by. The book got a little preachy at times, but overall, I am glad to have read it. Makes you think twice about rescues, shelters and breeders reputations.

This was not an easy read for the emotions. I was not sure if I could even keep going at times because the gut feeling I got was wrenching and will be everlasting. Imagine the ASPCA commercials with the music that would make the biggest grinch tear up but over and over for a good solid few hours as you read this. I would recommend the tissues obviously, but this was one that was ultimately worth it. I loved how the ending was some reprieve and happiness that seemed to make the sadness that fills the middle just a bit easier to sit with as you ponder what you read. This book is obviously a topic close to the author’s heart and you can tell with the care and time that went into the details of everything and the way the story flowed with conviction.

I Once Was Lost but Now I’m Found: Daisy and the Olympic Animal Sanctuary Rescue by Laura Koerber. This is a very emotional story of animals and the abuse they were under when a man named Markwell ran a kennel. It follows a dog named Daisy who suffers extreme abuse under Markwell’s care and eventually finds a loving home. 120 dogs were packed inside a warehouse in horrible conditions while Markwell spend the donated money on himself. The dogs lived in small crates, were not given enough food or water and never really taken care of in anyway. He would not give the dogs to anyone else to help them so they were basically left to die. Markwell has always said these dogs can’t be adopted because they are to aggressive. There are really no laws to protect these poor creatures. This book will open your eyes and make your cry about the plight of animals that have no home.

If you are an animal lover, this book will be hard to read. This story is about 124 dogs that are in a facility that is not fit for any animal. I found many emotions while reading this story. This is not a happy story, but it is one that needs to be told. This will take you through an animal rescue in this specific place. This book is not for the faint of heart. There is a hint of happiness through all the negative. I recommend reading this story to see that there is happiness in the negativity of animal cruelty.

This book is a true, moving account of the rescue of 124 dogs from a deplorable animal sanctuary called OAS (Olympic Animal Sanctuary).
The story details out the inhumane treatment and abuse of the animals by a cruel man who did not want to use the funds for the care of the dogs and instead kept them in very poor circumstances. They were put in small wooden crates and given very less food or water or fresh air.
The scandal was exposed through firsthand accounts, protests, public interventions and newspaper articles.
I found the book quite compelling and very disturbing at the same time. But these types of books promote animal welfare and make sure that these types of scandals do not repeat again anywhere in the country. Any animal lover who considers himself or herself remotely concerned with animal welfare should read this book.
