Sword of Darkness (The Vigilant Book 3.5) by LM Preston – Review by Ayla Phipps

Sword of DarknessSword of Darkness by L.M. Preston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the seventh book I have read by L.M. Preston, all of them in the Vigilant Series. I have read how the move affected EmVee, Dex, and Rei now finally getting to see Reece’s side was exciting he was the missing piece. Throughout the other 6 books Reece is mentioned in passing with EmVee, a key ally for Dex within their family, and the twin brother of Rei but everyone was curious what he was doing but were too busy to find the chance to find out.
Reece loves making weapons and everything to do with cars. He has been in Newport for awhile when he finally gets his first chance to race and quickly makes some enemies when the reigning first and second place winners are split to first and third when Reece wins 2nd place. The race is not a typical street race it is more of a death race, weapons such as fire balls and acid are dropped and thrown at the drivers’ cars. But racing is easy for Reece what holds his attention is the curious girl he meets there, Zamina. He is drawn to her in every sense from her smell to something deeper inside his soul that is drawn to her. Unfortunately, Zamina’s best friend Ora disapproves of the two talking and interjects herself consistently. A mystery surrounds the strange girl Megan that manages the races, Reece can feel the vibrations of power or authority that radiates from her. From previous books and learning of Megan and her “talents” it is quickly apparent that Megan tricks Reece into signing a contract before being allowed to enter the race. For Reece he quickly taken back by the students at his school New York had variety not only races as Newport does, but heights, everyone is taller than average, Reece at six foot two states that no one including the females are shorter than five-foot seven other than his tiny twin sister Rei. The bigger concern is that unlike the students in New York that were fearful in some ways Newport’s students had a predatory way about them, like they were waiting for the chance to fight or more.
Will Reece discover what makes Megan so powerful? Why does Zamina call to something deep within his soul? The authors word and creativity in making every book unique and original while also keeping tied to one family is mesmerizing. The overlapping details of existing characters that give them more depth while also introducing original characters to the individuals story and experience leaves you coming back for more. I cannot wait to see the continuation of Reece’s story in Blade of Fire out on November 27th, 2022.

Reece had a thirst for the adrenaline rush that came with taking risks. He’d avoided paying the price for most of his push of the envelope until he met one person that used his lust for fast cars, wicked weapons, ditching school, and beautiful girls to trap him in the most seductive ways. Someone he least expected put her life in danger to save him from himself, and he wouldn’t waste her sacrifice. Reece would use the anger fueled by the strikes to an innocent to start the beginning of the turn of justice that would change the course of his life. He hoped his family could forgive him for the deal that put a target on their heads.

Rebel of Fire (Vigilant, #3)Rebel of Fire by L.M. Preston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the sixth book in the Vigilant series, counting the lead in books to each main book. The lead in book for Rebel of Fire is Break the Darkness. We are now following the third sibling Rei, her adjustment to Newport, the Void. Picking up where the lead in ended Rei has survived the accident but is in bad shape, she was near death when arriving to the hospital afterwards.

The most unlikely person in Rei’s mind nurtured her back to health, protecting her, feeding her, caring for her. Finally waking up she was angry, glimpses of memories from the accident and the following weeks came and went. Fueled by two missions, one to find her family and the other to be free of her contract to Megan. I personally found Rei the most relatable of the Lewis siblings, she loves completely even if too quickly but she values life and love. The most affectionate in the family she always needed to have physical touch with those she loved, always hugging her family members even if they didn’t want to, they tolerated her affection. Though she is the smallest in the family she is stronger and fiercer than anyone ever thought. Runt is what he called her since they met only now it no longer held a tinge of pain within her it was affectionate in nature. Everyone she thought was becoming a true friend ended up working for the one person she vowed to stop. Manipulation was a powerful thing and when your one of the very beings keeping the Void open your untouchable. Asher goes against Megan’s demands falling for the one person she told him he couldn’t have. The events of the lead in book feed so much of this book, I don’t want to give anything away. Asher had been alone since the age of three, his mother killed, and his father taken prisoner by the Overlord, his only purpose was to free his father. Rei coming to Newport changed all of that, he still had his purpose, but they found each other drawn to each other, even when dating others. No longer able to fight what they felt inside they fell for one another but couldn’t drop the walls within them. Only after feeling broken did Rei truly find her power. Asher finally breaking his walls allowing himself to feel. Their missions suddenly meant nothing when the consequences were discovered. Megan had arranged for Asher to bond another for a power play, but he broke that deal, so Megan had to send another in his place to complete the mission.

Will the Lewis family ever be whole again? Who took Asher’s place in Megan’s plan? Will they ever be free of their contracts? If you love amazing world building, character revelations and growth the Vigilant Series is for you the author never disappoints with each new perspective you get deeper immersed into the world of the Void. I can’t wait to read the next book Sword of Darkness, to see Reece, Rei’s twin brothers’ perspective of the move from New York to Newport, and how he fits into the already amazing story.

Rebel of Fire is the third book in the Vigilant series by L.M. Preston. It’s a fantastic addition to the series, building on what we have previously experienced, while diving deeper into things, building a bigger picture of what is going on through all the action-packed adventure. This series just gets better with each new instalment, keeping my intrigue set on high, and always leaving me anticipating the next addition.
This is a wonderful Young Adult fantasy adventure- including paranormal, supernatural, and sci-fi elements, as well as lots of action, mystery, drama, danger, emotion, magic, secrets, family dynamics, challenges, agendas, and discoveries.
This story is again from Rei’s point of view, so I really recommend reading the previous book/s before starting on this one, to give you all the important backstory, character information, and other intriguing details which will help you to better appreciate this story, as well as the series as a whole. Plus, don’t forget that the books build on each other, all adding to the bigger picture being painted- and you won’t want to miss that.
Bring on the next instalment!!!
Happy Reading!

Thank you, L.M. Preston.

Scepter Of Fire (The Vigilant Book #2) by LM Preston

This isn’t the first book I’ve read by the author. Scepter of Fire is the second book in The Vigilant Series. It’s a great book and we get to see Dexter.

Dex is now trying to figure out how to get back to his family. He doesn’t believe that they’re dead. He fights to prove that he is worth something. The quote I chose for Dexter is: “Fighting is full of them, especially when it’s life or death. Use the cheap tricks.”

Highly recommended for YA Fantasy lovers.

Rei is the mIn character in this book. Its the 2nd and a half book. 2.5. She isn’t happy about her life, but really who is. I mean some may be good but not all. And she sees things and thinks strange things are happening. She gets a job and she loves it because she gets to do what she loves and best at. Her relationship with Trey helps her be in the social part of life, that she never thought she would be. The work she does may put her and her family in danger. Its been an adventure reading this book, learning about every character. Does Rei need some help or does she have everything under control? I can’t wait to find out.

This is the 3rd book in the Vigilant Series. And yet again the author takes us on an adventure filled with danger, mystery and paranormal happenings.
I do highly recommend reading these books from the first book of the series so that you get the full story and understand how each character fits in. Also the character development through the books is amazing to witness. Rei’s character I think is my favourite. She’s short in stature but boy does she make up for it with determination and inner strength. She is no one’s fool and she won’t allow herself to be controlled by anyone. Especially if her family are in danger she will fight with everything she has.

In this book we are back with Rei. In the last story Rei had bound herself to Megan via contract and it lead her to find out things about her new home and her family that she would rather not know.
Now she is on a quest to regain her freedom back from Megan and finally find and rescue her father. However she can’t do this alone and she finds she has to work with Asher to reach her goals.
This story is fully of Mysteries and paranormal going ons with the added danger that surrounds Rei’s family as the secrets begin to unravel, it makes it a fast paced engaging read.
All of Rei’s siblings have had their turn in this story and I can’t wait to see how the final sibling will carry on this story.

Another knockout story in the Vigilant series. Rei is the younger sister and she is on the adventure of her life trying to save her father and her family. With the help of Asher and under the requirement of Megan, she has to do certain things. The drama keeps you engaged. You just cannot put the book down. I have been reading this series since the first book and have just had to know what’s happening. It’s a page0turner. The characters are written to relate to and full of secrets. The town is a paranormal psychoville. This whole family is just trying to survive and get out. They are all badass. Rei’s story is just as fantastic and exciting as the others. You should read this story. Better yet, read them all, starting with the first one.

The adventure continues
The Vigilant Series is a brilliantly written paranormal adventure that just gets better with each book. The author does a great job at developing the world a bit at a time and ties it all in with a mix of reality and fantasy.
Book 3 is Rei’s story within the Vigilant series, her sister and older brother have each played a role in previous books and Rei has found herself unsuspectingly dragged in through tying herself to Megan. Now bound in contract, and on a quest to free her father, Rei must rely on Asher and that is just another dilemma.
I recommend reading the previous books, especially the novellas, to get the backstory and interwoven threads. Looking forward to Reece’s story next.

I love this author, and all the creativity that they behold! I feel so lucky as a reader that I get to enjoy the characters that this author brings to life! I am never disappointed by anything I read by them!

Love Rei, love seeing her find her place in this one, and take flight. i loved her character development in this one. The book continued where we left off and only took off more from there! I loved also how family oriented Rei was, she was roped into something she did not want to be a part of, and no way in hell she was going to let that control her as well as put her loved ones in danger. The book had more wonderful creatures to visualize and wonder about. I was intrigued all the way through and could not put this one down!

This author is amazing at all the paranormal and books they create! I can never pass up a book by them! I always must read it as soon as I can! Loved this must read author/book/series! Highly recommend!

This was a well written book with lots of excitement. My one drawback was there were moments where I felt like I was missing something which became apparent when I understood that this was book 2.5 in the series. which is my fault, not the authors. LM Preston has created characters with spunk and a likeable personality. I enjoyed this story enough to want to go back and read the series from the start!

I’ve read some of the other novels in this series and from what I gather it doesn’t follow the same character throughout the novels. Maybe one or two follows the same character then the next novel has a different main character so I am not sure if I need to read them in order or not.

In this novel we follow Rei who gets a job at the school newspaper. Now she can do what she is good at: investigating. Similar to other stories where characters start to unravel hidden secrets, this also starts to put Rei’s life in danger. Not only her life but her family as well.

I will need to read the novel before this but I really enjoyed this and I could not put it down. It is such a great feeling when you haven’t read about a world in so long but it still grips you from the first page.

I loved Rei and how many thought she was weak only to be surprised with how wrong they were.

I’m not sure how many novels will be in this series but I am looking forward to not only catching up on the previous novels but the future ones as well.

Break The Darkness (Vigilant, #2.5)Break The Darkness by L.M. Preston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am honestly in love with the world LM Preston has created in the Vigilant series books. As soon as I finish one, I instantly start the next. This book gives us the third perspective of the Lewis family moving to Newport, Rhode Island. Unlike the POV of the previous 4 books (EmVee and Dex), Rei is very different from her older siblings, she is less confrontational and more of the quiet observer.

It has been a month since her family moved to the small town leaving behind her hometown New York City, Rei decides to check out the back-to-school club fair, in hopes of finding a dance club. In the parking lot Rei eavesdrops for the first time since moving, a cheerleader and her boyfriend are having an argument that leads to the girl seeing her. Megan, the girl who not only runs the school newspaper but also a down low blog surprises Rei, convincing her to work for her. Feeling foggy headed Rei agrees only to instantly be confused, as the fog cleared from her mind, as to why she would agree. She noted instantly that Megan could be pretty, but she had the eyes of a predator and that set off a strange feeling. The more Rei sees of the new town she calls home the more she feels that it is off, everything from the houses to the people seem fake, giving her the feeling that something was very wrong in the town. Meeting a few of her fellow classmates she has already gotten her first crush on a football player named Trey, and a cute cell phone charm from a girl named Yori at the club fair. On her first assignment from Megan Rei “borrows” her older sister EmVee’s car to pick up her partner after his car breaks down on the way to school. Discovering he is the boy that was arguing with the cheerleader a week earlier in the parking lot she is already feeling cold towards him, the feeling growing after she is pulled over and he tells him he was late to pay an informant that is why Rei was speeding. Hiding in a locker Rei hears her partner get beat up “hazed” by the varsity football team, she got the information needed but can’t help but feel slightly uneasy about seeing him covered in cuts and bruises. What are the diamond members and what is the secret shadow police force that Megan mentioned to her?

Rei is just as skilled as her older siblings in martial arts, but she prefers to stay hidden and learn the secrets others try to hide. Will Megan lead her into something she can’t hide from and why does she care so much about her family and their secrets? Every book in the series pulls you deeper into the world the Lewis family. Rei thinks more about how she can use things to her advantage holding back information, even about herself, until she thinks it will be the most useful. I cannot wait to read Rebel of Fire and See where Rei’s story takes her.

Who knew that taking a job at a High School Newspaper would weave Rei into an underground news operation? She’d stupidly sacrificed her family and was blackmailed into becoming a member of a Vigilant operation to save the unsuspecting human population in what most thought was Newport, RI. Rei was no longer living in ignorance, but knowledge came with a price. Love wasn’t an emotion she could give into when the ransom of her family’s life was at stake. Asher was sent to help her, but she felt he was sent to ensure she paid the debt owed in order to save her family. Rei didn’t relish being held hostage by Megan and her puppets or being thrust into interfering with a war instigated by magical beings, and their fight to control humanity. Rei had no idea how she could create a diversion that would save her, destroy an unimaginable evil, and teach her to love – again.

Break the Darkness is book #2.5 in the Vigilant series by L.M. Preston. This story is from Rei’s point of view, so this book is building on what we have previously experienced and lets us dive deeper into things- which is all helping to build a bigger picture of what is going on.

This is book 2.5 of the Vigilant Series. I have loved this series from the first book and I strongly recommend reading them from the beginning so that you get the full story and a full picture of all the characters.

This is the story of events of what happened from the view of Rhi.
Rhi is the younger sister of Emvee and Dexter and while she is mentioned in the other books it’s in this book that we really get to know her and her story.
Rhi is small and people are always thinking she is weak however she is such a strong and determined character. Even though she gets annoyed at everyone assumption it also works in her favour when she starts to investigate the strange goings on at the school.
However what she doesn’t realise until its too late is that the secrets she plans on uncovering puts herself and her whole family in danger.

This story is full of Suspense, secrets and lies, paranormal happenings and mysteries to be solved. Will Rhi be able to solve it and protect her family or will something happen that will change the course of all their lives.

Break the Darkness is a fast paced YA/Fantasy that once you start reading there’s no putting it down until you’ve finished. I’ve read other books by this author and her style of writing and attention to detail bring the story to live along with fully developed characters that make you feel as if you are right there with them. I truly enjoyed reading this book. Rei is nosy and has been told it will get her into trouble which it didn’t until she met Megan. Rei was super excited to be working for the school newspaper and never dreamed she’d be using investigative skills. Things aren’t always as they seem. What will happen when she realizes her family may be in danger? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I look forward to reading many more books by this author.

Break The Darkness is book 2.5 in the YA fantasy Vigilant series. This is another part of Rei’s story. Make sure to read the books in order. This book answers some questions and brings the story together much better than the previous books.

As with the others it is fast-paced and action packed. It is a paranormal story mixed with fantasy and science fiction. Lots of emotions – heartbreak, hope, secrets, suspense, betrayal, mystery, love and sacrifice in a world full of magic and werewolves. .

Some twists and turns and still a few more mysteries left to be answered.

Mythology and mystery, danger and supernatural/paranormal beings, magic and more that I am sure that any YA fantasy lover will enjoy.

I believe Rei is my favorite in this series. She’s small but packs a punch. She uses her size to make people forget that she is powerful. She observes a lot while investigating the weird stuff going on in the new town she and her family have moved to. Once she gets herself involved on the school newspapers, she’s sticking her nose in where it may nto belong. This story is full of punch, drama, adventure, and teen angst with some paranornal thrown in. I love it. One of my favorite teen paranormal series, this can be read as a standalone. I do recommend the series read. The characters are so realistic and relatable. I love the plot, so teenager like, even with the paranormal in it. Rei is a pretty badass young woman. Well done!

This is a great instalment in The Vigilant series. This is between book 2 and 3 and we get to know Rei and how she ended up working with Megan. I am truly in love with this world and the characters LM Preston has created the intricacy in which characters from books, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 are consistent. They were introduced in one and each book you learn more things about them that were not known in the previous books. I have read the previous 3 books in this series so far, the 2 from EmVee and now both from Dexter. Once again, the half book Unbreakable Darkness is not required to read before Scepter of Fire, but it helps fill in a lot of the story and plot points. This book picks up where Unbreakable Darkness ends.

Dex remembers the car accident, the family car going off the bridge and hitting the water. He worked to get his siblings free of their seatbelts starting with his older sister EmVee, her friend Kayson appears and pulls her from the water, and then darkness. Waking up in a hospital room held down by chains, he overhears people talking about the hospital is going to be coming down. A doctor comes in and informs him that his older sister and father are on the same floor as him but that they couldn’t save everyone. His goal becomes clear, get his sister out of the hospital. Seeing Kayson, the memories return he pushes him into EmVee’s room and tells him he must get his sister out of the hospital now, and the window is the only option. Kayson is shocked saying they are on the 6th floor when Dex says, “You go this, you’re different. I see it in you.” With a nod Dex leaves, surprises the guards with his strength for a “human” before he is hit with a dart in the neck. Trey, Dex’s elite initiation friend that he saves is bringing him food, in his cell, he attempts to escape and is stabbed by a dagger made from the Scepter Stone. Suddenly a month has passed, Dex gets some cellmates, and mysterious cocoon that Trey reveals is a girl, and a silver haired Siphoner that has escaped from 3 different holding locations. A gift from Trey, befriend him and he will get him and the girl out. But the ultimate shock is learning that the Void is not on Earth. Everyone that was human at one point was stolen from Earth to be the test subjects of a scientist named Sybil.

Will Dex succeed in his mission to be free again? Who is the girl in the cocoon and what makes the Siphoner the most dangerous experiment? The author is not telling the same story over and over again she is enhancing the story, adding layers to it with each new perspective that fills in the holes of the previous point of view.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dexter has been a pawn for long enough. He has always been tortured and abused for the sins of his father, but not anymore. Dex is a really great addition to the series. L.M. Preston is growing to be one of my favorite authors, I can’t wait for the next book.

Scepter Of Fire (Vigilant, #2)Scepter Of Fire by L.M. Preston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dexter is one of four kids, he lived with them and their parents up until they moved to the Void and ever since it seems that trouble has been finding him jo matter how hard he tries to keep on the straight and narrow. This leads to a bit of friction between him and his dad and they couldn’t see eye to eye, but all that changed when they tried to leave and before he knew it, Dexter was on his own.

However, albeit he is away from his family, he is not alone, thanks to something his father did, Dexter is now feeling like a pawn in a whole new game, but this one involves torture and imprisonment, but the things he hears between sessions are what keeps him up at night. This is as well as the nightmares fuelled by the loss of someone precious to him, as well as past events which changed him beyond recognition.

This carries on for a while, until he is no longer alone, two prisoners join him and they hatch a plan to escape, but things never go as planned for Dexter and now he has to his hide himself from them, as well as those who wish to use him for their own gain. The joke is on them though as Dexter has learned more about the Void than he lets on, he knows there are magical there and he knows who is in charge as well as what they want, he also knows that they should have let his family go.

What they don’t know is that Dexter is determined to become a Vigilant and find his family, but will he be able to keep his feelings in check long enough to carry out his mission? This is a paranormal urban fantasy where nothing is as it seems and danger lies around every corner and in every shadow. It is an addictive story which you will not want to put down until you know how it ends.

BOOK TWO! Dexter’s life is a mess. He is separated from his family and his best friend is dead. He finds out that he has been living in The Void, kind of like the regular world but not. Mortals are not aware that they aren’t where they think they are. Dexter is trying his hardest to right wrongs and stay alive. Through many challenges, he just wants to become free and save his family and friends.
This was a good read, action packed, supernatural beings, and testing oneself. Please read the first books of the series!
