Dexter didn’t like being a pawn. It seems life was taking him there though. He and his father never saw eye to eye, but being captured and tortured for his father’s mistakes gave Dexter too much to think about. First, the girl he lost; he’d never forget what they did to her. It changed him, and made him see the small city where his father moved him was a prison for magicals, the damned, and now him. Too bad, the creator of the Void didn’t realize they would be better off if they’d set him free, because now he was fighting for his life, and someone he’d have to hide his feelings from to protect, not just from those that want to drag them back, but from himself—a vigilant. Scepter Of Fire (Vigilant, #2)Scepter Of Fire by L.M. Preston
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Each book in this series seems to get better and better. I found it so easy to slip straight back into this world, as if I had just carried on reading. I would definitely recommend reading this series in order as each book is a continuation and you would miss out on a lot of details.
I love the way the author is building up these stories over the course of the series. It feels like she is building toward something and I can’t wait to see what that could be. I enjoy these characters each time I read about them. I feel like, with each book, we get pulled more and more into their journey. This is another great addition to this series and I can’t wait to see what is next.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is book 2 in the Vigilant Series. I would highly recommend reading these books in order so you get the full understanding of the characters and the story. You definately need to read Unbreakable Darkness which is the book before this one and the start of Dex story.
After find out in the previous book that his whole life is a lie he now has to fight to find a way to escape the people who don’t want him free and to live life on his own terms.
Along the way he will face life changing dangers and discover some things he never knew. With friends old and new showing up it becomes hard for Dex to know who he can trust and who is going to be against him.
This story is full of mystery, danger and feelings of teenage angst that keeps the story moving at a fast pace. The way the author leaves the story sets it up perfectly for the next book and I can’t wait to read it.

Whew, this is Dex’s version of the paranormal mystery series of the Vigilants. This is one series that you want to read in order. Dex is in it deep in this one. With the help of some new and some old friends, he ends up on an adventure to find answers. Mystery, drama, and the paranormal make for one of the best YA paranormal series you’ll find out there. I picture it as a contemporary take on the battle for good and evil. Even as an adult, I eagerly wait for each new book this author puts out. Her writing is fresh, new and relevant. The characters all have personalities that are relatable. The athletes, though paranormal, sound like some of the jocks I knew in high school. Go ahead, you know you want to read this one. This action packed YA fantasy is book two in the series and it is by far the best one yet. This book is once again told from Dex’s point of view so if you haven’t read book one or book 1.5 then I would recommend reading those two first. But this book really is the best of the series it’s full of action, tension, betrayal, magic and so much more that it will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. So if you want a good new series to read make sure you run out and pick this one up today.

Scepter of Fire is the second book in the Vigilant series by L.M Preston. This book is again from Dex’s point of view- so I highly recommend reading the previous books, especially Unbreakable Darkness (Book #1.5), as it/they contain important information that will help you better appreciate this story (and the series, as a whole). This book builds on what we learned previously, giving us a bigger picture of events, so far.
It is an action-packed YA fantasy with the plenty of the paranormal, supernatural, sci-fi elements, adventure, mystery, drama, danger, emotion, discovery, betrayal, agendas, tension, choices, challenges, intensity, and magic.
Dex’s life was turned upside down when his father uprooted their family and moved to this small town, which has changed everything he thought he knew. But fate hasn’t finished testing him yet, and this book sees him face more life threatening challenges…. And make a few new discoveries along the way.
This series is getting better and better the further we go…. next please!
Happy Reading!

Thank you, L.M. Preston.

I love this author with all that exists within my soul! I love this series that they have created and brought to life. This one I found explained things I had wondered about, and everything tied together perfectly!

The book is an amazing read. If you want to enjoy a strong character development along with fantasy and action as well as paranormal, then this is a book not to be passed up! I must say start with the previous story in this series. I really loved getting Dexter’s story, his side of things, it was a fun imaginative read and it held me till I reached completion! I enjoyed Dexter, his character development on its own. Who he was in the past, is not who he is anymore in the present. I really valued his worth and how strong bis heart is and was. The book was gripping and full of intrigue! Loved it all the way through! Couldn’t put it down!

Love this author and all books that they create and bring to life. This was no different. Cant wait to read the next, as I know I am in for a treat as well! Highly recommend this must read book/series/author!

Make sure to read these books in order and especially read Unbreakable Darkness book 1.5 in the series. It is Dexter’s story and is the prequel to this book Scepter of Fire which is book 2.

The Vigilant series is YA paranormal supernatural stories. Mix in some fantasy and science fiction and you have this adventure where suspense, betrayal and mystery, danger and sacrifice, paranormal beings/creatures and magic will lure you in. The story is action packed and fast-paced.

In this book we see Dexter trying to fix things he did in the past. Once again it is time to face things head on and hope he can save the others.

The ending of this book sets us up for the next.

It took me a while to get into the flow of these books but now I am enjoying it.

Unbreakable Darkness (Vigilant, #1.5)Unbreakable Darkness by L.M. Preston
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

You definitely have to read these books in order. So, all these .5 in the book numbers and more than one prequel is doing my head in so let me try to get it straight.

Insatiable Darkness is Book 0.5 in the Vigilant series and the prequel to Caged Fire Book 1 both are EmVee’s story.

Unbreakable Darkness is Book 1.5 in the series, but actually takes place at the same time as the first two books. It is Dexter’s story and is actually the prequel to Scepter of Fire Book 2. I know there are other books but I will worry about them later. Hope this helps.

These books are YA paranormal supernatural stories mixed with fantasy and science fiction. There is adventure and suspense, betrayal and mystery, danger and sacrifice, paranormal beings/creatures and magic and much, much more in this fast-paced and action-packed tale.

Dexter finds himself staring Trouble in the face more than he likes but unfortunately it seems to find him where ever he goes. Now it’s time to face it head on he only hopes he survives to tell the tale.

It took me a while to get into the flow of these books but now I am intrigued.

I am really enjoying each and every book in this series, this one included. They all seem to add to much to the series as a whole and yet stand out as a single book. I loved the main character in this particular story. He carried it for me and I really connected with him and his journey. The story was exciting and gripping from the moment you start reading. I struggled to put it down once I had started reading.
So much seems to happen in this book, I was swept away by it all and loved each and every moment. This is a really strong series I am thoroughly enjoying it all.

Unbreakable Darkness is Book #1.5 in the Vigilant series by L.M Preston. It is actually set before the events in Book #1, Caged Fire. This story is from Dex’s point of view- but also adds to the growing ‘bigger picture’ of the series, so far. This book is also the prequel to Scepter of Fire (Book #2).
Dex’s life was turned upside down, and his big football dreams went up in smoke, when his father moved the family from New York to a much smaller city. He seems to be a magnet for trouble, soon finds himself in jail. Things just seem to slide downhill from there. But what a journey of discovery he is thrust into…
This continues the intriguing YA fantasy series with action, adventure, mystery, the supernatural/paranormal, drama, danger, family, emotion, discovery, love, and intensity.
Bring on Book #2!
Happy Reading!

Thank you, L.M. Preston.

Unbreakable Darkness (The Vigilant Book 1.5) by LM Preston – Review by Ayla Phipps

Unbreakable Darkness (Vigilant, #1.5)Unbreakable Darkness by L.M. Preston

This is the third book I have read by LM Preston, and I still find myself transported to her world. Unbreakable Darkness is technically the third book in the vigilant series. While the first two books Insatiable Darkness and Caged Fire take place at the same time as this book, they are from the perspective of Dexter’s older sister EmVee.

While Unbreakable Darkness is like Insatiable Darkness, it is the prequel of Dexter’s story after the family moves to Newport Rhode Island. We first meet Dexter on his first day at a new school, back in New York his 6’4” frame was considered one of the largest students, the students male and female in Newport made him feel average sized. Dexter is the second oldest in his family after EmVee, with twin younger brother and sister Reese and Rei. The first day of school goes from bad to worse when his sister Rei texts him needing help that led to him getting pulled over and arrested by Detective Whalen. When his father Max arrives to pick him up the Detective offers to let him go with no charge if he will agree to being an informant at the high school for him. Students have been disappearing since the end of the previous school year and all through the summer, with no leads the police are concerned. The top athletic students continue to go missing without anyone filing police reports. Months go by and Dexter feels he is finally getting the chance to achieve his dreams. He is on the football team working towards being an elite, promised it would lead to a pro football career after high school. Falling head over heels for London, his mentor Grady’s little sister. Only now he is beginning to question everything about the town of Newport, his girlfriend is keeping secrets linked to the cuts and bruises that appear and disappear all over her body. He witnesses unimaginable events in the woods, vampire looking creatures, one of which he “kills”, giant hybrid spiders with female torsos and faces, told that if they survive making it out of the woods back to their cars they move on to the next stage. Numerous warnings begin making him think he is not crazy that he should be questioning things but his hunger to be a pro footballer is all he wants in the world, and he would do anything and everything he can to succeed in the initiation process.

I cannot wait to read the next book to learn the rest of Dexter’s journey in Scepter of Fire Book 2 of the Vigilant Series. LM Preston’s ability to build the story and characters is beyond amazing. Several characters overlap between the first two books of EmVee’s POV but this book builds on them, we learn more about them and how they are weaved into every one’s story.

Unbreakable Darkness (The Vigilant Book 1.5) by LM Preston – Review by Kerry Carr

Unbreakable Darkness (Vigilant, #1.5)Unbreakable Darkness by L.M. Preston
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is book 1.5 of the Vigilant Series. And just like the previous books in the series it is a great paranormal story that will keep the reader gripped.

In this book we follow Dexters story. Since moving with his family things seem to be going from bad to worse. Dex always seems to attract trouble and it seems moving to a new place hasn’t changed that. However things start to take a dangerous twist when he gets involved in things he doesn’t understand and starts to unravel secrets he shouldn’t know about.

Add to this a romance, a murder mystery where kids are going missing and a plot twist that involves something wrong with the football team and cheerleaders and a magical ring and this book becomes one read you can’t put down. This story is told through Dexter’s eyes and his reactions to the situations happening around him.

This book was so clever with how it was written, and the paranormal aspect of it was very much done perfectly. The book brought on a lot of intrigue and kept me guessing all the way through!

Reading about Dexter was amazing! I loved his backstory and learning about him, who he was and is, and what his whole story line was about! The book intrigued me, as well as kept me interested. and I kept on reading to see what would happen next! Something I love that the amazing author does in their books, is how each character’s story in a book relates to another. I think it is creative and very clever! Honestly this author is amazing at all they do and create! I love this series and this book! Truly love it!

I cannot say enough good things about this amazing author and the stories that they create! Each one leaves me wanting more. You must read this book and series for sure! Highly recommend!

“Dex’s father took his hand, tried to pull the ring off again. ‘It’s the ring! Where’d you get this? It’s evil magic.” That sentence explains the story. I love a good book that can pull you in and just keep stringing you along to the end. This one did just that by keeping the story adventurous and challenging. The family and school drama itself made for some wonderful writing. The series will flow better if you read the first book in the series. This book is #1.5 in the order. The way the story pretty much picks up and continues from the last book is smooth sailing. The author throws in a few plot twists that can surprise you. What makes the book great is that the story picks up but the POV changes. Fantastic tale that left me with a cliffhanger. Time to read the next book. If you love paranormal romance, you might like this. It is geared to young adults but the adults enjoy it too.

Sword of Darkness (Vigilant, #3.5)Sword of Darkness by L.M. Preston
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This story revolves around Reece and the hard choices he has to make. His adventure takes him on a journey that will make him in the middle of the action. Looking for answers in both himself and the mysteries that are developing in his world.

This is an interesting YA story. There is a good mix of action and adventure in this book. It was nice to see Reece begin to find his way and grow. He has a lot going on and must learn and grow quickly, life is not going to stand still and wait for him to figure things out. While this story is easy to follow it is part of a series and readers may want to read the others in the series to better connect with the characters in this book. There is a nice mix of magic and adventure that will have those that enjoy YA stories entertained.

What an intriguing introduction to this series. In this prequel to the Vigilant series L.M. introduces us to EmVee and her family as they move to a new area; Newport the family manage a gym, they are all interested in boxing and MMA. At school EmVee meets Rachel and Megan although they do not like each other, Silas and Kayson (both are into sports and members of a band). All is not quite As it seems.
The business her family are managing is also owned by Dean, who owns a local club, where the boys band plays, some of the locals seem stronger than they should, there are dead bodies found in the woods, having been mauled.
EmVee decides to investigate what is happening, will she manage to discover what is happening?
This book has great character development and the story certainly keeps you hooked and wanting more.

And she needs to find out if her father is alive, as well as determine what has happened to her family when she is told that they are alive/

After the attack by Silas EmVee and her dad have been on the run, but darkness is brewing inside her and something doesn’t feel right after being bitten.
Then her dad is shot right in front of her and dragged away leaving her with no one to trust or turn to.
Insert Kayson who she didn’t trust when she met him previously but he has info about her family and how to help her. Can she trust him to uncover all the secrets she’s still plagued with.
This book was much better than the first with strongly developed characters action snark mystery and a little romance. Can’t wait to read the next one

EmVee has moved to Newport with her family. She’s a strong athlete and it generally consumes her life But she may be willing to give up some time for two big gorgeous guys that have taken her interest.

But nothing in this town is what it seems. Why did they move here, what has her father gotten them into? Why are athletes disappearing or dead with littered body parts all over… and why does this annoying girl she’s met seem to know so much.

This was a quick read, though I enjoyed it I felt like I didn’t get to understand the characters very well as they weren’t developed enough and you were left wondering many things which I hope is remedied in the next book!

This was a fast paced read and enjoyable. This is 3.5 in the series and you can read it as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order to get to know the characters.

Reece is all about fast cars and his need for speed…that is until he meets Zamina. Reece is awestruck over her beauty but is off limits. But when decisions need to be made by Reece…will it be Zamina or his family?

There is magic, secrets, mystery and betrayal (that made me mad) that wrapped up into a good overall story.

This isn’t the first book I’ve read by the author. The author seems to capture my attention. Sword of Darkness is book 3.5 in the Vigilant Series. It follows Reece and his journey in NewPort.

Reece is one of the youngest Lewis siblings. He has a twin sister and they have each other’s backs. Then Reece meets a girl and everyone is warning him to stay away. The quote I chose for Reece is: “It is. I have a portfolio of my work. My weapons sell for high prices. I have the money, and if I don’t, I will get it once I sell the weapon.”

Highly recommended for YA Fantasy lovers.

This wonderful author really gives it all, some fighting, great character development, a mystery and more made it impossible to put this book down. While the first installment to this series is a small novella, this installment was a very detailed novel that I just simply couldn’t put down. Full of other worlds, all kinds of characters, humor and more trust me when I say that you need to run and pick this one up today.

I totally devoured this book just like the last one. Once again, these characters were amazing. A very amazing, fast paced, page turner, action filled, story that kept me on the edge of my seat that I couldn’t put it down. It was filled with so many twists and turns and kept me guessing what was going to happen it really felt like a rollercoaster ride of events. This book was amazing and highly recommend it.
