When Loretta’s Grammie Stella comes to visit from Florida, she brings an orange tree for her. Loretta discovers aphids on it that Grammie tells her to get rid of or they will kill her plant. Loretta does not want to get rid of the aphids because she likes insects. Then Loretta discovers a katydid on the tree that ate the aphids but is also eating her tree. Loretta is unsure what to do to keep her orange tree alive to take to the science fair. Should she keep the katydid? Will her orange tree survive?

This is the fourth book in the Loretta’s Insects series and like the other books it is fun and informative. This book teaches about insects and the roles they play while also being entertaining. It is beautifully illustrated and easy to read. I have really been enjoying this series and learning about insects alongside Loretta. A great read for children of all ages.

Another enjoyable children’s book and I love learning something new even as an adult that this story of Loretta’s Katydid Did.

Loretta’s grandmother visits Loretta from Florida and bring her a present, a small orange tree. Loretta was so excited to learn about her new orange tree, espeically with the upcoming school science coming up. What was not expected were aphids on the orange tree, and they can be harmful, but Loretta loves insects, while her grandmother suggests to rid of them.

Does Loretta keep her insects to see what comes about to her orange tree?

This story is great for young and old. The only drawback a bit for me is the illustrations, I feel like they could have been a little more clearer detailed.

What Loretta’s Katydid Did (Loretta’s Insects) by Lois Wickstrom – Review by Jamie Burns

What Loretta’s Katydid Did By Lois Wickstrom is a great book to spark an interest in trees and insects. Loretta’s grandmother comes into town to visit her and gives her an orange tree. Loretta notices various insects on the orange tree which might not be healthy for her tree. However, she leaves the insects on the trees and begins to witness the insect food chain as other insects are attracted to the tree. This is a great book to help children learn that not all insects are bad, most insects have a big job to help take care of the ecosystem. I know most kids do not like spiders, but this story includes one that eats insects that were on the tree. This can spark a great conversation about not always liking insects but knowing that they have an important job. This book would be a great introduction to food chains or to introduce the concept of a science fair. Wickstrom does a fantastic job of integrating science into her books.

Well once again I have come across a great book for children. I have read a fair few of this author’s works and this was yet again a great one. I love how she is able to get the kids attention and create a world where they are not just reading but learning. The author does a great job of making a good environment and story for children. I just wish my children were younger. I truly highly recommend these books from this author.

Beautiful watercolor illustrations support this cute story about a girl who completes her science fair project.

This book also serves as an introduction to garden pests, food webs, and basic scientific method. Loretta is a believable, realistic character that could easily be a real person. As an educator, I enjoyed how Loretta solves the scientific problem of what is happening to her orange tree.

Loretta’s Grandma arrives for a visit bringing her an orange tree. While Loretta is looking over the plant she sees some bugs which turn out to be aphids and she finds a most unusual way of how to get the aphids to stop doing damage to her plant.

I enjoy this series quite a bit. This explores the impact a Katydid can have on plants and bugs. Great reading for young readers to learn about science and nature.

This is my family’s 3rd Loretta book. This one is about the orange tree Loretta got and it has some insect problems. The steps that Loretta takes to make sure her orange tree doesn’t die before her science fair is amazing. It makes things easy for my 6 year old to understand and introduces him to other insects that are out there and what may be harmful to our plants and what we can do to help them stay healthy. The story was cute and very well written! I can’t wait to read more Loretta books to my kids!

What Loretta’s Katydid Did is the fourth book in the Loretta’s Insects series by Lois Wickstrom. This is a fun children’s illustrated storybook full of interesting facts about insects, educational elements, a school science fair, various insects, and an entertaining bit of an adventure.
Loretta loves insects and this time her Grammie brings her an orange tree all the way from Florida. Loretta discovers that the tree has aphids which are killing the tree. But because Loretta loves all insects she just can’t bring herself to kill them. Then she finds a Katydid on her tree- and her aphid problem is solved. With her school science fair coming up, her new tree and her love of insects might just make a winning entry. What happens makes for a fun read.
This is not just a cute story, it also encourages children to learn while they read. I read this story with my grandson, but we wish the illustrations were better, as they are very simplistic and aren’t as bright, bold, or eye catching like a lot of Ms. Wickstrom’s other books- so they didn’t grab or hold his attention like some of her others have done. As with the other books in the series, the ‘new’ cover is great, but unfortunately the illustrations inside the book aren’t up to the same standard. With better illustrations, this would have been an even better story, in our opinion.
Loretta’s Insects series contains (so far):
-Ladybugs For Loretta (Book #1)
-Bee’s In Loretta’s Bonnet (Book #2)
-Loretta’s Caterpillar (Book #3)
-What Loretta’s Katydid Did (Book #4)
Happy reading!

Loretta is back with some more adventures and when she gets home from school this time, she has an unexpected visitor, her Grandma and she has not come empty handed, she has brought Loretta an orange tree and Loretta thinks that this is perfect, as she can use it for her science project. As her Grandma explains how to look after the tree, Loretta notices that it has some insects on it, her Grandma explain that they are aphids and that Loretta will need to kill them, or they will eat the tree, but Loretta doesn’t want to kill any insects and instead just watches them.

A couple of days later and the aphids have mysteriously disappeared, but Loretta can hear a strange noise “Katy did, Katy did” coming from the tree, when she goes to tell her Grandma, she is told that it is a Katydid, an insect which eats aphids, Loretta is happy about this, but not so much when the Katydid starts to feast on her tree instead!

What will happen to Loretta’s orange tree now the Katydid has moved in and will it survive long enough for Loretta to use it for her project? This is yet another charming and informative book for all ages, with lovely illustrations to go along with it.

What Loretta’s Katydid Did was a really cute story about a girl who gets an orange tree but has a few problems with insects that could kill it. Through the story, she learns a little bit about insects and how they can both damage and protect her plant.
I thought this story was great. It was interesting enough to keep a child’s interest, but had some nuggets of information that can encourage questions which will motivate kids to find out more.
I would definitely recommend this book.

Loretta’s grandma gives her an orange tree that she can grow even though she lives in Colorado. When inspecting the tree, Loretta finds some aphids. Grandma tells her that she should remove them to protect the integrity of the plant. Loretta decides to leave them there and, ultimately, she’s glad that she did. Will Loretta’s orange tree help her to win the science fair at school?

Again, Lois Wickstrom has written another great children’s book! This one is a part of a series on bugs and has a science focus on it. This book would be inspiring to a child about to enter their first science fair!

What Loretta’s Katydid Did is full of beautiful illustrations by Francie Mion. It is another story in the Loretta’s Insects series which is 6 books. It is for children aged 4 – 8 years or Preschool – 3. The stories in this series are original and fun and full of interesting facts.
Loretta enters the science fair with her orange tree but first she must get rid of the pesky infestation that is threatening to ruin it all. How can Loretta cure the tree of its problem and still compete for the prize.
The one thing I like about Lois’s work is that there is always something to learn and there is always a solution to a problem. It makes your imagination envision all sorts of outcomes and solutions.

Lois is a former high school chemistry teacher and former head science teacher at Science in the City Summer Camp in Philadelphia. She has also been an adjunct science teacher at University of South Florida. Since retiring, she continues to take science classes. Her class in Forensic Biology led to Little Red, The Detective, in which Red is studying fingerprint identification, so she can tell that “Grandma” isn’t who she says she is.

Lois has taken so many science classes that she believes science is the solution to almost every problem, including the dilemmas in fairy tales. She has invented what she calls Science Folktales. In each science-based tale, the protagonist achieves a better ending than the original because of learning scientific principles. She has turned some of these tales into plays.

She has also created a series of Mermaid Science stories, which make use of water science.

Lois is married to the love of her life. She has two children, four grandchildren and a dog.

Loretta’s Caterpillar (Loretta’s Insects) by Lois Wickstrom – Review by Jamie Burns

Loretta’s Caterpillar is another amazing book by Lois Wickstrom! The illustrations and storyline are amazing together. I love how the story includes rich vocabulary and is connected to science. This book would be great to include in a classroom or homeschooling environment. This book’s back matter contains information about Monarch Butterflies migration, how to obtain Milkweed seeds, and information on how to tell if the butterfly is male or female. If your little scientist enjoys learning about insects, they will love this book!

This was an adorable little book. It is part of a series about insects by Lois Wickstrom. What I like about it is that that the artwork is just as amazing as the story. It held the attention of both of my kids and it also provided a lot of education on the lifespan / metamorphosis of a Butterfly. After we finished the story I let them ask any questions that they may have had and turned it into a complete educational experience.

My oldest kid said: I really loved the story and how she learned all about the lifecycle of butterflies like I did in school. The cover of the book was pretty and the inside pictures were too. I liked how some of the words looked different [note from mom: this was really cool and it emphasized certain words].

My youngest kid said: It was very cute. I liked the pictures and butterflies. The one caterpillar pooped a lot [insert childish giggles here]

Now both my kids want to visit a butterfly garden! Fingers crossed that I can find one that will be as entertaining as this book was!

What a cute and informative book!!! I LOVE butterflies and so do my kids!! I got this book for my 8 year old, but I think that anyone who loves butterflies can see how great this book is! It teaches you a little about their life cycle, where they are and studied the most, the difference between mail and female, what eats them, what they eat, and just so much more!! I can picture a field of butterflies all taking off, but also a field of caterpillars hatching too!! So pretty!! In this book Loretta is the main character. She wakes up one day to see all the butterflies gone from the milkweed field outside her window. Where could they be?!?! She runs outside, but only finds eggs all over the underbelly of the milkweed leaves. She finds a specific one and wants to keep it. She protects it from a bunch on things (insects, birds, and lizards), watches it grow through metamorphosis, and then she and her family watch it become a beautiful monarch butterfly! One morning she watches all the butterflies as they fly away. Such an adorable book! Again it teaches you so much about monarch butterflies and their life process. Not taking away from the book AT ALL!!!!!!!!! Because it really is cute and my daughter and I LOVED it so much!!!! BUT I feel that if you read this book with your kid(s) and they LOVE it as much as me, you should grab the butterfly hatcher kit that comes with all the stuff you need to hatch your own butterflies at home! A friend of mine did it and also bought a milkweed plant for her yard. She gets to see them EVERY year, down here in Florida! So cute and fun! Plus they get to learn from the book and watch their own at the same time!!!!

I like how imaginative this book is. Even though it’s based on the life cycle of monarch butterflies, this short story manages to entertain the reader and breathe a bit of imagination into the narrative. I found that I’ve learned more about monarchs through this book than I had previously and could still thoroughly enjoy the story. The illustrations are easy to decipher and the storyline itself is easy to follow. The notes from the author at the end of the book also were insightful and gave me a sense of purpose and wish to follow through on getting some milkweed in the future. I would definitely recommend this book to those who have inquisitive children!

As a teacher, I am always excited when I see a new book by Lois Wickstrom. These books are always well written and informative. They explain scientific concepts to children in an engaging way. I truly love reading them to my classes and they love reading them as well. I am a teacher to children ages 4 – 10 and I use each book in a different way with each grade level. This book is not an exception.
I will say that I read this book with a Kindergarten class. They loved it! I did not read this with my other classes because we study the life cycle of butterflies every spring. This will now be a staple during this unit! It is going to be such a great addition I know that each class will love as much as I did reading this!

Loretta loves being outside in her garden and she is always discovering new things and today is no exception, Loretta is running down the garden, past the milkweed plants when she finds something she has never seen before. When she takes it to her parents to find out what it is, she discovers that it is a monarch butterfly caterpillar and is told to put it back where she found it, Loreta does this and decides that she wants to help it grow, so everyday she goes down to the milk weed to see her caterpillar and while doing this, she protects it from a bird, a lizard and a wasp as it grows.

Will Loretta be able to protect her caterpillar so that it can grow into a beautiful butterfly and can she learn about monarch butterflies at the same time? This is another fun and informative book in this series for all ages, with lovely illustrations which make it easy to learn and retain the information.

Loretta loves to look out her window and watch all of the beautiful butterflies flying around. When she wakes up one morning and all of the butterflies are gone she becomes concerned. She goes outside to see what happened and finds a leaf with a tiny egg on it. The egg is from a Monarch butterfly and she is determined to take care of it and watch it grow. She protects the egg from a bird, a wasp and even a lizard as it grows and goes through metamorphosis. Loretta is thrilled when it finally turns into a beautiful butterfly and flies away to go through its migration journey.

I adore the stories that this author writes and find myself wishing that I had these books for when my children were little. Up until reading this book, my favorite book by this author was Bees in Loretta’s Bonnet. Now, I am adding this book at the top of my list of favorites. As with every book by this amazing author it is beautifully illustrated which really brings the story to life.

In all of this author’s books I learn something new and this one was no different. I was fascinated to learn that it took five generations of butterflies to migrate from the United States to Canada! I also learned the difference between a female butterfly and a male butterfly. I had no idea that there was a difference. Children of all ages will love this cute story about the life cycle of a butterfly from egg to metamorphosis to migration. I highly recommend!
