Rules of Engagement: A Single Dad Romance (Platonically Complicated Book 3) by Mika Jolie – Review by Robin Rankin

Rules of EngagementRules of Engagement by Mika Jolie
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rules of Engagement: A Single Dad Romance is the third book in the Platonically Complicated series by Mika Jolie. I have a bit of a crush on Lucas. He is so many of the things I like in a man. He is sweet, has dark and eyes and a beard and his daughter is the center of his universe. One of those qualities makes a guy attractive but put them all together and whew.

Lucas and Kate just work so well together and his daughter Emma loves Kate too which is so important when you’re a package deal.

Kate is a great friend to do what she does to help Lucas out. I don’t know if I could have done the same thing considering the circumstances. She risks her heart just to make sure Lucas is happy.

Very enjoyable read. I wish there had been a little more interaction with Emma, she could have easily been my favorite scene stealer with the way she seemed larger than life in the scenes she was in. I can’t wait to see Cam fall! He is so self assured and confident and I think he’s going to fall the hardest.

4 out of 5 Stars

This book is a lot more than its synopsis. At first blush it seems that it is a basic, single dad, fights for custody of his young daughter from the evil, vindictive ex-wife, needs help to show that he is the better parental choice, and in steps the sister of his best friend to save the day.
I mean, yes, that is what this story is about. But there is so much more that just that.
First, this book is told from Lucas’ point of view, which a a bit of a refreshing turn in my oh so humble opinion. Lucas has loved and lost. Loss that only ends in a bitter divorce and an even bitter custody battle.

Kate is independent, loving and driven. When she learns that Lucas needs her help and it would benefit his daughter, she jumps at the chance to help. Only to fight to keep from falling under the spell of Lucas. Kate has also felt the sting of love gone sour, and she is not eager to jump back into the pool

There is tension between Lucas and Kate, some serious tension. This book is a deep, slow burn. Sexual tension practically crackles in the air with these two. Jolie is an amazing author and knows how to craft a hot and steamy story with some serious sassy and characters of incredible quality and depth. An amazing read for anyone!

By Mika Jolie

Rules of Engagement is another great read by Mika Jolie. I don’t think there is a book I have read by Mika that I haven’t enjoyed and this one is no different. I love her writing style and the way she can bring her characters to life. In this book we have a storyline that is centered around Lucas and Kate. After a horrible divorce Lucas’s heart, now only belongs to his daughter. But then he starts having thoughts about his best friend’s sister Kate. He knows he shouldn’t be having these feelings but does so now, will Lucas act upon them?
As for Kate she too has been hurt by love but has not closed her heart to finding love again. So now what will Lucas and Kate do? Will they cross the line and get together? Biggest question is if they get together will that ruin the friendship between Lucas and Kates brother? Grab yourself a copy of this book and enjoy the read.

Love love loved this book! I have read a few books by this author already and this is for sure one of my favorites. It was sweet and cute and who doesn’t love a good friends to lovers romance.. I can’t get enough of them.
Lucas… oh sweet sexy Lucas! (Can I keep him? okay? Glad that’s settled!) He is a single dad who is going through a NASTY custody dispute with his horrid ex-wife. His lovely daughter currently lives with him but if the ex gets her way that all will change. That’s where Kate comes in. She is Lucas’s best friend’s sister and they’ve come up with a plan to help Lucas keep custody of his daughter.
Such a good story line with a few twists and of course a whole lot of chemistry! The author’s writing is fantastic and I am looking forward to reading more by her! I would recommend this one to a friend!

Rules of Engagement by Mika Jolie was the perfect mix of a single dad, friends to lovers, best friend’s sister fake relationship romance. Boy, that a lot of troupes in one book but I have been looking forward to this story since I read The Boy Friend.

Lucas and Kate have been friends for decades but when Lucas’s ex is trying to take his daughter to France full time; Kate decides to play his fiancée to try and keep his daughter. We all know this plan will backfire on them but it was sexy hot reading about them trying to just keep thing as friends.

It was great to see a little Dean and Cori mixed in this book. Now we just need to find Cam a girl – can’t wait for that book.

Rules of Engagement: A Single Dad Romance is the third book in the Platonically Complicated series by Mika Jolie. This book can be read as a standalone, as this is the first book in this series that I have read and had no trouble following the story line. I have read a bunch of stories by Ms. Jolie, and am definitely going back to read the first two books in this series. Lucas and Kate’s story is full of humor, and some extremely hot chemistry. This story is written in Lucas’s point of view, and had me laughing out loud throughout. It is fast paced and engaging and kept me reading long into the night. It is totally worth the lack of sleep. If you are looking fun, sexy romance, this is the book for you.

Rules of Engagement is the third book in the Platonically Complicated Series by Mika Jolie. This is a great single dad romance, with a best friends’ younger sister, and ‘friends to lovers ‘elements to it too. I have been loving this series, and it’s becoming harder to choose my favourite, as each book seems to slightly outdo the last.
You don’t need to have read the other two books before starting on this one, but I recommend doing so because you will get to know the other characters and stories, which in my opinion, will help give you a better reading experience of this book.
Lucas is a single dad focused on his daughter and his job as a hedge fund manager. Since his bitter divorce he’s earned a bit of a “playboy” reputation, and definitely isn’t interested in a relationship. But when his ex-wife decides to play dirty and seek full custody of their daughter, Lucas will have to do a bit of damage control, and whatever he can to project an image of a loving ‘family man’. And this is where his best friend’s beautiful younger sister comes into the picture.
Katherine Morello owns a high end lingerie business and is also a part-time blogger. She’s not looking for a relationship, especially after her last one ended when her boyfriend cheated on her. Kate has known Lucas all her life, and secretly thinks he’s a catch- he’s sexy and intriguing, if not a little guarded. She gets along well with him and his cute little daughter Emma- so when he needs some help, she’s happy to lend a hand.
The plan is to ‘fake’ their engagement long enough to thwart his ex. They devise a set of rules that will protect them, and their friendship. And so, the engagement begins. What happens makes for a really intriguing, funny, sexy and steamy read!
Ms. Jolie has a beautiful, witty and descriptive style that really showed throughout this funny, emotional and completely captivating story. I was entirely engrossed from beginning to end. As with the other books, the characters all had such well thought out and developed personalities- they really were very endearing and had me totally invested in them and their story. The funny banter, quips, innuendos, and antics had me laughing out loud. As always, I also love the close-knit, supportive group of friends in this series- they are just wonderful.
The story is told from Lucas’s point of view, which I loved- pulling off a male perspective isn’t such an easy thing to do, without it looking forced or fake- but Ms. Jolie has mastered the art and made it entirely realistic and believable. She also has a knack for infusing her stories with a large dose of Sizzle that never fails to fog up my reading glasses.
I can’t wait for more from Ms. Jolie!

Thank you, Ms. Jolie!

I really liked the way the interactions between the main characters played out. It was well written and even though the story took its time, it kept you reading. I liked Katherine’s character a lot. Rules of Engagement: A Single Dad Romance is book three in the Platonically Complicated series by Mika Jolie. This series is mesmirising and told from our leading man’s POV. Not very often do I read a story from the male, and I loved stray from the norm.

The hero is taken by his best friends sister. It is a new thing, and one he cannot shake, or the feelings that  go along with it. Kate is everything he needs and wants for himself and his daughter, and all of what he won’t allow himself to take. But kife has a way of handing out shocks, and feelings won’t go away just because they are not convenient or you want to hide behind them. It is a case of the more you protest, the deeper the emotional connection, and the harder it is to walk away. It had an emotional edge that was almost hidden, but there nonetheless. It was something that crept up on you, unawares. It was a welcome surprise. A story with heart, passion, friendship, love, denial, and intensity. A gripping and sweet tale that swept me away. 4 stars.

Lucas and Kate have known each other most of their lives. Lucas is scarred from his previous failure of a marriage that ended in a nasty divorce but on the bright side a beautiful daughter. Lucas is afraid to try again but has always had a deep down want for Kate. After Lucas’s ex wife tries to paint him as a wild guy not fit to raise his daughter he is wary to do anything that can make him lose his daughter. I loved how these two blunder their way to hopefully find each other. I especially loved the sassy six year old Emma! She’s awesome.

This is my second read by this author and it was written very very well. I love her style of writing and the flow of her stories are spot on.

I really liked the characters in this book but I had a hard time connecting with the storyline. I never felt the seriousness of what was going on and although a good Dad it just felt like the part Lucas should have been most worried about didn’t come through to me, it was more about constantly reminding himself he could not be with Kate and everything felt like it was too focussed on them than what was going on. This might have just been me and maybe if I read it again I would feel different but the inner thoughts got to be a bit too much for me in some parts.

Now in saying all of that, I still read every word and never even thought about putting it down and will absolutely read more by this author. This was simply a personal issue I had and does not reflect in any way on this author’s writing.

I do recommend reading it and I will read it again in the future.

The Platonically Complicated Series is a fun one. I like that each book in the series can be read as a stand-alone and that there are storylines and characters that cross over.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT checks the boxes of many different genres, all that I like to read. It’s like a dream come true. Told from the male point of view, both main characters break the fourth wall… Him by speaking directly to the reader and her through her blog.

This was a quick and easy read that I read in on sitting. It is filled with humor and romance, great friendships and a best friend’s sister. The story line is complete and the story flows well from beginning to end.

I recommend this story, this series and this author.

I am a full on suck for a single dad romance! I don’t know what makes me fall in love with them but they are the best and this doesn’t disappoint! This book was sweet friends to lovers romance that covered all the bases of everything I look for.

I loved Lucas. He didn’t want to give up the rights to his daughter so his BF, Kate, stood up, but quickly that muddled the feelings. His feelings turned to her but he was conflicted because he was burned before and he wasn’t sure he could trust again.

I’m always a sucker for the single parent romance probably because I’ve been there and even though I found my HEA, I thrive on books that have single parents because they always have a piece of me!

Mika Jolie hit this one out of the ballpark! I could not put it down until I had devoured every single word from beginning to end, and I loved every single uninterrupted moment of it! (Such a rare mommy occurrence LOL!) I have read several of her works before, but none of the Platonically Complicated Books and I am sad that I haven’t now, but bonus is I now have some to go devour while I wait for the next book to come out in the series.

Rules of Engagement is all about Lucas and Kate. Might I just say I absolutely adore Lucas! He is the perfect book boyfriend material ladies!! Step back I think I have claimed this one as my favorite of 2019 so far!! (Granted we are only in February LOL) He has a bit of it all! Including the hot swoony single dad vibes, gets me every time!

Both Lucas and Kate are best of friends. Their friendship has managed to stay platonic and the thoughts of more has been kept within the confines of their fantasies. Everything is about to change though when a plan to help out Lucas with his ex wife from hades starts to complicate things in all the right ways! These two were absolutely dynamite together! So much fun to read and I just couldn’t get enough! Definitely one to add to the re-read list! Can’t wait to find out what will come next! Thanks for such a fantastic read Ms. Jolie!!

Rules of Engagement: A Single Dad Romance (Platonically Complicated Book 3) by Mika Jolie is a friend to lovers romance story that leaves you with a big sigh and feeling good. I love Mika’s writing style and her characters are always realistic but this story I loved. It was told in the male POV and I loved the difference it placed on the whole feel of the story. It was fun and delightful and damn was it sexy. The plot is simplistic yet the complexity of the emotions involved show the real and true multiple layers our characters.

Lucas’s ex is making waves and threatens the one thing he loves more than life, his daughter. Just when things seem impossible one of his best friends offers their help. One that will change the course of his life. BUT Bro code stands in his way to true happiness.

I thoroughly enjoyed the journey from friends to lovers. Jolie’s writing is always a delight and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. Light, fun and easy, with a healthy dose of chemistry and attraction that steams up the sheets makes for a wonderful read.

If you love a forbidden romance story, then Rules of Engagement is just what you need.

Most people will go above and beyond for family and friends. This holds true in this story. Kate is Lucas’s best friend and things start to look a little different. I didn’t like how afraid Kate was to express herself to Lucas. I prefer my characters to have a backbone. This romance was thought out perfectly. The author took the time to build a relationship meant to last. Lucas is a perfect gentlemen. He doesn’t push Kate and let’s her find her way to him on her own. I dislike people who use their children as weapons to hang. I really enjoyed the relationships between the characters all have a bond and it made fighting for Emma easy.

Rules of Engagement, by Mika Jolie, is the third book of the Platonically Complicated series. This single dad romance that is sweet, witty, fully charged and a great read!! Lucas and Kate burn the pages of this story with their push and pull; their dynamic creates such a great story line, you cannot resist it. Lucas is a strong character; it plays well through the story with his strong values where they relate to his daughter and the lengths he is willing to go to ensure she has the best life. No wonder Kate is willing to stick up for him and give him the additional help he needs. Kate is sassy, spirited and her own individual that shines. She is magnetic and others cannot help but to admire her, as well as, be drawn to her. Mika Jolie is a talented writer and her stories are always a reading pleasure and Rules of Engagement sits firmly in a must read category for romance lovers that enjoy a little bit of drama, with a dash of hot/sexy and a pinch of something tasty to go along with it!

Rules of Engagement: A Single Dad Romance, (Platonically Complicated Book 3) by Mika Jolie. I have read most of this author’s work and I can honestly say, I truly enjoyed them all and this book was no different.
This could be either a forbidden friends type of a book or even a best friends little sister book but either way it was a fabulous read. Lucas wants to focus on his life with his daughter but his ex wife is wanting to make things extremely difficult for him. When his best friends younger sister, Kate, who is also a great friend to him, comes up with a way to calm the bitter custody battle. She will become his “fake” fiancé. Sounds like an amazing plan….. except that Lucas has been having thoughts about Kate for a while now…. and Kate has always had a crush on Lucas. What could possibly go wrong, or right………. I was hooked from page one,and while this is book 3 it read as a standalone. I only wish we got kate’s POV in some scenes.

The story is told from Lucas’s point of view and you get a front row seat for everything that is going on with his nasty ex wife. I love the relationship between Kate and Lucas, the way they are as friends is fun and relaxed, they are comfortable with each other, they trust each other. Then you add in a small complication that is a blessing in disguise, as they figure out how to make things work, along with if they should act on their hidden desires. Can they take that next big leap? Or will everything end when their fake engagement does….

Mika Jolie….nothing more is needed. I have NEVER read a book by her I haven’t loved. This is no different. The written was perfect, the characters were great and the story was 5+ stars!

I really couldn’t say anything bad about this book. Lucas has custody over his daughter Emma. She means the absolute world to him. He would do anything to keep things justbthe way they are. His ex wife is back and wants to take him to court for custody saying he’s an unfit parent and he has different women around him all the time.

His best friend’s sister who happens to be one of his best friends poses as his fake fiancé. The only problem is, Lucas is extremely attracted to Kate and she has started in some of his hottest fantasies over the last year. Since Kate and Lucas are so comfortable around each other, it’s easy to pretend. They even kiss in public to make it known. However, Kate’s brother isn’t to happy about this plan. Before long, Kate and Lucas are sending flirty texts and then Lucas sends Kate a picture he normally wouldn’t send someone. One thing leads to another and they end up making a deal of what they are willing to do during their fake engagement.

The only rule is, they cannot fall for each other. What are the chances of that happening between now and a week from now when Lucas has to go to court? I say very likely!!! Will this ruin their amazing friendship they have had for over two decades or will they both be able to get past it?
Such a great book!!!

I absolutely adored this story. I’ve been so lucky to read a few books by this author now and I love her writing style, she always manages to sweep me up in her stories and I can never put them down until I have finished.
I fell in love with Lucas straight away; he was just such a genuinely lovely person. He had clearly been hurt in the past but the devotion he showed to his daughter was admirable – it was clear just how much she meant to him. I loved that the story was written from Lucas’ point of view it was nice to see the male side for once.
It didn’t take me long to fall in love with Kate either – I really, really wanted the two of them to end up together – I thought that they were perfect! Although we didn’t get any POV chapters from Kate we did get the little input from her blog pieces which gave a little insight into her as a person.
I thought that this was a really, sweet story with wonderful characters. I 100% recommend it and can’t wait for more from this author again!

I was so excited to see this! I loved the first two in the series and couldn’t wait to see if Cam or Luc got a story! My prayers have been answered and this is Lucas’ (Luc). It is a best friend to lovers and add the component of a single dad in there. Kids always make things different and this is no exception. This one is told from Lucas’ POV. He isn’t as harsh as Dean was in his book. I’m guessing it’s because the Dad in him mellowed everything out a bit. There are many great moments and it was nice seeing Cori, Dean and Cam again. Cam was such a little instigator. He is fun and full of wit. I enjoyed what he called Lucas’ ex-wife!! So funny! What a great friend!
A couple of my favorite lines from the story:

“Men might wear the pants but the women control the zipper”

“We are all imperfectly perfect and beauty begins within”

When I started Chapter 38 I couldn’t help the smile that came over my face. Now don’t skip ahead but just know what is waiting for you when you get there.

I enjoy reading Mika Jolie’s stories. She is a one-click author for me. With that being said I didn’t love this as much as Dean/Cori’s, at least until the ending. That ending was wonderful! At times I could see the connection these two have. Looking back…overall it’s a great addition to the series and I eagerly look for the next book. Or really any book by this author :-).

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It has been a while since I read a Mika Jolie novel and I forgot how much I enjoyed them. This was a page turner from the start. It centres around the intriguing story of Lucas (the aforementioned single dad) and his best friend Kate. Both burned by previous relationships, they deny their mutual attraction and stay just friends.
When Lucas’ ex-wife tries to gain custody of their daughter, Kate offers her help in an unexpected way. Being a fake fiancé is one thing but what happens when the attraction threatens to take over..?
The attraction between the two main characters leapt off the page. Before they were even together, their innermost thoughts were displayed for the reader and we knew they should be a couple, even if they didn’t! This was a thrilling modern romance set in New York which I loved. The characters were well drawn and believable, the love scenes intimate but not over the top. I was racing through it but didn’t want it to be over. 4.5
