Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt, #2)Murder at Honeybee Lake by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a paranormal crime novel with lots of plot twists and suspenseful moments. It kept me guessing until the very end. This book could be a bit triggering, although I think the subject matter was handled sensitively. I felt like the characters were less developed than I hoped for and there were a lot of characters to keep track of. it got a little repetitive at times but overall it was an interesting read.

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of Doubt Book 2) by Jessica Aiken-Hall – Review by Charlisa Wahtomy-Alba

Randy Fletcher and his boyfriend, Ben, are living a nice quiet life on Honeybee Lake in the small town of Murray, New Hampshire. He feels safe here and finds solace after getting out of an abusive relationship. While out enjoying the beauty of the lake Ben discovers a dead body. When the body is later identified as his ex-boyfriend Randy doesn’t want to believe it. How can that be his ex when his ex was supposed to have died a few years prior? When he is arrested for murder he doesn’t know what to do or who to call. His sister Mandy steps in and calls the last person Randy wants to see. Will he refuse the help and take his chances or will he accept the help and hopefully beat this charge? When Mandy hears the news about Randy she drops everything to prove her brothers innocence. But when her sister-in-law who can communicate with the dead points the finger at Randy who is she to believe? Will they be able to find the culprit before Randy has the book thrown at him?

This is the second book in the Shadow of a Doubt series. Just like with the first book in the series, Rebecca Remains, the main characters keep you invested. I have come to enjoy books by this author very much. Due to some of the content talked about in this book I would not recommend it to anyone under the age of 18. I am looking forward to the next installment in this series. I can’t wait to see what the author has up her sleeve.

5/5 Stars

Due 5/7 Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt #2) by Jessica Akien Hall

This is another great series by Akien-Hall. She knows how to bring the stories to life. Her characters seem to come to life and I love that.

Mandy is an author who writes romance. Her wife Emily is supportive of the work. When she gets a disturbing phone call from her brother things get freaky. The quote I chose for Mandy is: “Well, it’s not like pre-baby Tessa, but you know how it is. She’s got her hands full. And now that Tommy’s back to work I bet she’s even more exhausted.”

Randy is finding himself after a horrible past relationship. When his boyfriend finds a dead body things go south. When things point back to him his sister steps in. The quote I chose for Randy is: “Of course. I love you Benjamin Davis. Everything is going to be alright. Don’t you worry.”

Highly recommended for Paranormal Crime lovers.

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt, #2)Murder at Honeybee Lake by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a book which is only for those over 18 due to the triggers it contains within.

Randy Fletcher is a best selling author of children’s horror novels and is celebrating the anniversary of his boyfriend Ben moving in with him as a couple together in a boat on Honeybee Lake, or at least they were until a knocking sound on the outside of the boat annoys Randy enough that he convinces Ben to have a look, however, when he finds a dead body attached to a rope underneath the dock, their plans are immediately forgotten and the police are called. Randy doesn’t want to believe what he is hearing but Ben’s reaction to the situation convinces him it must be true, so as they wait for the cops to show up, they go back down to the lake and support each other but they end up arguing, especially when Ben hides their relationship from the cops by saying that he is just a friend, it doesn’t help when the cop is dismissive of the whole situation and state that they can’t see as it is too dark and that they will have to come back in the morning to confirm it instead. Ben is stunned by their nonchalance and ends up taking it all out on Randy when all he wants to do is help, they manage to talk it through and spend the rest of the evening trying to forget about the body in the lake.

The next day the cops come back to the house and have the same bad attitude as the day before, but one is eventually convinced to get into the lake and take a look, when they do, it is confirmed that there is a dead body and that it is a crime scene so they have to call in a team to remove it, while they are doing that, they send Randy and Ben back up to the house to wait, but not before another argument. Meanwhile, Mandy Blake is having snuggles with her daughter when the phone rings and her wife brings it to her saying it is her brother Randy and he sounds awful and when he tells her what is happening at his house, her first thought is to go there and support him and Ben, but he delays that telling her there is nothing she can do, he just needed to talk to someone about it all, so she asks her sister in law Tessa if she has heard anything from Randy, but being busy herself, Mandy isn’t surprised when she doesn’t get an answer until later on. Five hours later and the body is on its way to the morgue but with no further information about who the person is, apart from it looks like they have been there a while, so with nothing else they can do, Randy and Ben try to take their minds off it and decide to try and get some sleep.

Mandy is still trying to get her head around what Randy told her over the phone and has a bad feeling about the whole situation, which is confirmed when she sees a bunch of missed calls and messages saying Randy has been taken in for questioning, Randy is waiting for her there in an interrogation room when two men in suits enter and start demanding that he tells them what is going on so that they can get on with their day, but when he clearly states multiple times that he has no idea what they are talking about, they reveal the identity of the body and Randy is completely taken aback and decides to ask for a lawyer before they go any further with their questions. When they leave and Mandy comes in, all the emotions he has been holding spill out when he tells her he has just found out that it is someone from his past better left forgotten and she is as dumbfounded as he is. They leave together and after everyone has returned home, this is when Tessa calls back, this is when she decides to communicate with the victim and see if they can help figure out what happened. When things take a turn for the worse and evidence is collected, fingers are pointed and confusion, temptation and betrayal reign, will Randy, Mandy and Tessa be able to unravel the mystery of the body found in Honeybee Lake, or will the past come back to haunt them all with deadly consequences? This is a triller with a paranormal twist which keeps you guessing all the way through, as you try to figure it all out as you go along the journey with them.

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt Book 2) by Jessica Aiken-Hall – Review by Dani Dando

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt, #2)Murder at Honeybee Lake by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I swear all the best books have an author as the main character, maybe it’s because authors are so good at writing them having some serious first-hand experience of that stuff. Either way, I loved this read and I loved the main character. Once again Aiken-Hall writes brilliantly, keeping you gripping the edge of your seat all the way through. And can I just say that I adore the paranormal mystery genre, not enough books in it me thinks – or maybe there are, and I am just blind. But I’ve got to say I love it; it marries two of my favourite things and it’s just amazing.
As previously stated, Randy Fletcher (got to love that name) is a writer and is looking to take his relationship with his boyfriend Ben to the next level. What better place to do this than a quiet lake called Honeybee, where he feels at peace? But a massive spanner gets thrown in the works in the form of a body being discovered and things that Randy thought were safely in his past, rear their ugly little heads and threatens to derail the quiet peace and happiness that he has found. Mandy, his sister, drops everything to help her brother, but even her loyalties are put to the ultimate test when the evidence severely implicates him. Get ready for some major twists and turns that will keep you guessing.
Obviously, this has crossover from the previous books in the series with favourite characters making their appearance, but I don’t think you have to have read them to enjoy this, because this makes a super standalone that anyone who loves the paranormal and enjoys a good mystery should sink their teeth into. Also got to adore a good twist and this book does it nicely. Give it a go, you will not be disappointed.

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt, #2)Murder at Honeybee Lake by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this paranormal crime story. It is book 2 in the Shadow of A Doubt series. It can be read alone but if you read the first book you will already know the main characters.

In this story we follow Randy and Ben. After getting together they start to settle into their new life on Honeybee Lake. Things are good until a dead body turns up underneath the Dock of their home. Who is it and what is it doing under there?

Once the body is identified Randy is the prime suspect and is arrested for murder. While he is in prison he suffers homaphobic abuse but with the help of his sister Mandy and his lawyer father can he get out of prison.
While Randy is inside Ben leaves. Turns his back and runs? Is Ben guilty of committing the murder?
With Mandy trying to solve the murder and clear her brothers name she turns to their friend Tessa for help. Tessa is able to speak and connect to spirits so can she connect with this person to find out the truth?

The Book is full of twists and turns that leep you guessing and all the way through it points to the murderer being either Ben or Randy but you never know who.

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt, #2)Murder at Honeybee Lake by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Murder at Honeybee Lake is the 2nd book in the Shadow of Doubt series by Jessica Aiken-Hall. I liked the first book better, as it was more intense, but this book was very good too. They should be read in order, as there are a lot of overlapping characters, without much background given. This book focuses on Randy Fletcher, who came to the rescue in book one, taking care of Tessa. This book is full of suspense from the very beginning. Randy and his boyfriend Ben are swimming in the lake outside their house, when they find a dead body. Everything gets tangled up, and Randy is soon in quite a pickle. His life is thrown upside down, and soon it is difficult to determine what is good and what is bad. I was glad to have the book be a true mystery, with the truth not being revealed until the end. I love how all the characters are connected in a mysterious way that are slowly discovered. Highly recommend this series, and cant wait to read more by the author.

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt, #2)Murder at Honeybee Lake by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Murder at Honeybee Lake is an enticing crime novel with paranormal elements. It’s the second in Jessica Aiken-Hall’s Shadow of a Doubt series and can be read as a standalone or enjoyed alongside the first book.
Randy and Ben’s world is turned upside down when they find a body underneath the dock at their lakeside property. At first it seems like homophobic cops are their biggest problem, until the evidence starts pointing to Randy as the culprit. Their found family is convinced of Randy’s innocence but will have to fight to prove it, and to look after Randy and Ben.
This is a real page-turner. I couldn’t put it down until I knew what had really happened, and why. There are plenty of developments along the way that kept me on the edge of my seat.
There are some great side characters in this book as well. I particularly liked Dora, the nurse who befriends Randy. She’s such a warm, caring character and was a point of light in an otherwise dark book.
I’d recommend this to fans of paranormal mysteries. If you want a story where the ghost gets involved in solving their own murder, this is the book for you! It gets five stars from me.

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt, #2)Murder at Honeybee Lake by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What happens when you find a body under your property but in the end all the leads come straight back to you for the murder.

Randy is living his dream life with Ben now, but after his horrendous past can he finally put the past behind him and move on to the next step with Ben. It is coming up to the couples first anniversary and Randy is ready to take that commitment but will one night change that forever.

This is the second book in this series and follows the relationship and life of Randy, we get to see a glance into their world in the first book but this book explores more of their relationship and the way the story twists whether Randy can convince people he is not mad and did not do anything. When Randy finds the body to the investigation you feel for him as in the end, he feels no-one believes that he was not involved in anything.

With hints of the paranormal and the secondary characters with the story this makes for a compelling read. The story is well written and draws you further into the story as it goes on, can they discover the reason why this is happening and can their love for each other help them through to uncover the secrets which lie within the story.

This is a great mystery story and I believe you will be just as hooked as I was.

So, after reading the first book in this series I had to pick up this one to continue. And it didn’t disappoint. I will say I do highly recommend you reading the first one before this if you haven’t. Just as with the first book, the author continued to have me reading as fast as I could to see what happened next. She has a way with words that keeps you enthralled in the story. Not only is this a paranormal mystery, but there is a love story intwined that will keep you on the edge of your seat and tear at your emotional heartstrings. Personally, these characters made the entire story come to life. And as with any good mystery you will find yourself pointing fingers at certain individuals but watch out who you blame because people may be destroyed in the process. Read it to find out if your suspicions are correct.

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt Book 2) by Jessica Aiken-Hall – Review by Sherry Sharpnack

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt, #2)Murder at Honeybee Lake by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

WARNING: Somewhat graphic descriptions of jailhouse violence and suicide attempts.

“Murder at Honeybee Lake” is a follow-up to “Rebecca Remains,” a very twisty paranormal mystery. This one begins a year after “Rebecca…” resolves. In this one, Tessa’s friend Randy – who provided her with a guest room when she was hiding from Keith – has been living with Ben at their home at the lake for a year now. Down at the dock one evening, Ben pulls a dead body out from under the dock. Randy handles this badly, refusing to believe that Ben found an actual body until the police confirm it the next day. Ben is deeply offended by Randy’s behavior, yet he readily accepts Randy’s marriage proposal later in the week. Their engagement starts on a rocky note as Randy is arrested for the murder of his … already dead lover? WHAT? Denver died years before, from cancer. How did he end up in the lake? And how did the murder weapon show up under Randy’s deck? Ben runs away from all the drama, leaving Emily’s (Tessa’s sister) wife Mandy to solve the murder, as she knows her brother Randy could NOT have murdered any one! If Randy didn’t do it, did Ben? Did Denver “engineer” his own death? Randy undergoes severe abuse and homophobia from the prison guards, and has to depend upon Mandy and Randy’s estranged father, a lawyer, to get him out of the horrendous jail conditions. This is pretty hard to read, even though Randy finds a friend in the jail’s nurse and a closeted gay guard, Simon.
The paranormal is much stronger in this book than in book #1. Randy and Ben both act strangely at times, and both attempt suicide. Were they … not themselves … when the suicide attempts occurred? This is all really twisty and the plot points of either Ben or Randy being the murderer are very convincingly drawn. So who murdered the already-dead Denver? Can Tessa contact Denver to find out?
Parts of this novel get pretty repetitive, but it is twisty and suspenseful. The repetition knocks down the star rating from a 3.3ish to an even 3 stars.

This is book two from this series and I have read the first one. I definitely don’t think this is a standalone. I think you should read the first one and then read this one. This story focused on Randy and Ben. I love how all of the characters are connected and how they make everybody part of their little family. This also had a lot of Mandy in it which was good but it was definitely Ben and Randy’s story. Tessa and Emily are in here as well but mainly background. This is a great series and I recommend it.

This was a read that made me think. It will have you think about how you look at people, how you treat them, and how you don’t always see/know what is going on inside of someone. The simple kindness of a candy bar can literally save someone’s life, and you might not ever know until later. Evil is very real and the author did a great job of conveying that in this book. Not my normal read, but I am glad that I picked it up!

The second book in the Shadow of Doubt series by Jessica Aiken-Halle will not disappoint you. This twisted tale had me on edge as each piece of the puzzle started to fit together. This is such an amazing story about love and its power to help each of us in our times of need.

Just as Randy and Ben are ready to start their new life, a murder at their lake house on Honeybee Lake starts a whole new line of trouble. Randy doesn’t know how it’s possible that a dead body ended up under their dock. Ben is a wreck because he finds the body, and no one seems to believe him…the police nor Randy.

The fight to find the truth is a lot harder for both Ben and Randy than anyone could have ever predicted as an evil spirit from Randy’s past haunts both of them with terrible thoughts that they both committed the crime. Possession by an evil spirit is difficult to overcome. With Sara and Tara, paranormal specialists on their side, how can anything go wrong?

New friends, old connections, and family surround them both with a love that helps them to overcome their obstacles. How much will they have to go through to find the truth behind the dead body?

Murder at Honeybee Lake is the second book in the Shadow of a Doubt series. It can be read as a standalone.
I enjoyed this book. Great plot and well-written characters. The paranormal element doesn’t overwhelm the story and it feels very natural. There were a couple of places that felt a little slower, but not enough to put me off. The back and forth of emotions between Randy and Ben in the beginning was like whiplash because it happened several times in a short space, but you understand the flip-flopping a little more as their backstories come out in detail later on.
Overall, great read!

Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt, #2)Murder at Honeybee Lake by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Murder at Honeybee Lake is a continuation of the characters from Book 1, with an emphasis on the story of Randy and Ben, family of Tessa. The plot begins quickly with the titular murder being discovered in the first chapter. As the investigation begins, and the clues come together, Randy and Ben themselves become key to unravelling the murder.

This story is a cozy, easy-to-read mystery that fans of that genre will enjoy. It’s quite similar in structure and arc to Book 1. One thing I wasn’t a fan of was the insecurity of the characters. They all seem quite fragile and melodramatic, swinging wildly between loving deeply to accusations of hate. I wanted to find a strong hero to follow, but didn’t quite. Despite this, it is a relaxing read with a fun whodunnit plot.

This story is so thought-provoking good that I could not put it down until I was done with it completely. The characters really made the story believable. and connectable. This story is about Randy. Randy is at a loss. His past is coming back full steam ahead and he is fighting for his innocence. Will he be successful in proving his innocence? His sister comes to assist him in the fight. Will too much come to a head and Randy loses everything? Will the truth set him free or will it be a little too late? I highly recommend this book. Murder at Honeybee Lake (Shadow of a Doubt, #2)Murder at Honeybee Lake by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this engaging paranormal crime novel which is book two in the ‘Shadow of a Doubt’ series. I would recommend reading the previous book as the characters do crossover and Tessa’s backstory was also explained. In this novel we are back with Tessa Stevens who has a special gift of being able to communicate with the dead. Following an abusive relationship author Randy Fletcher has been taking things slowly with boyfriend Ben, but as he enjoys the quiet solace of Honeybee Lake Randy decides to take his relationship to the next level. Randy’s past comes back to haunt him when a body shows up in the water and his safe place is threatened. As evidence piles up looking as though Randy is guilty of this murder he and his sister Mandy Blake must prove his innocence and the best way to do that is to find the real killer. When Mandy asks her sister in law Tessa to communicate with the victim she has to reconsider her belief that her brother is innocent. Randy is determined to discover the truth but both temptation and betrayal make him question everything and it might be to late to find the answers he seeks.

This was a real page turner and the plot twists kept me guessing until the end. The storyline does contain sensitive subject matter but it is dealt with sensitively. I was gripped from page one and couldn’t put this book down. The characters and the setting are bought to life by the descriptive narrative and the storyline flowed well. I liked how Tessa’s character had developed from book one and I look forward to future books with her as the main character. The book is written from Mandy and Randy’s point of view and this worked well and added to the overall drama and suspense of the story. I recommend this mystery crime novel with a paranormal twist as a great read.

I thought this book was a great addition to the series. It was gripping and kept me guessing the whole way through. I just had to find out what was going on.
I thought the characters were what made this book. I really connected with them throughout and they are what really held my attention. I got behind them early on and stayed that way from start to finish. This is such a well written and intriguing book that I would highly recommend.
