My Hidden Life: Brothers of Camelot Prequel( My Life Series Book #1) by Necie Navone ~ Review by Liz Vrchota

Necie Navone was a completely new author to me when I first picked up ‘The Only One’ which is the first book in the Brothers of Camelot series that ‘My Hidden Life’ is the prequel to. I would recommend that you read both of these before you jump into the rest of the series. These are the type of books that are going to need to be read in the right order to make sense, but don’t worry it will be worth it! Necie Navone is one wickedly good story weaver!

There is a lot, and I do mean a lot, going on in this book. We get to know all about Alessndra Canzano or more commonly reffered to as Aless, in this book. We start off when she is very young but grow right along with her as she comes into age and her role as the next in line to take over the family name and “business”. The thing is… this is not your average family “business”. Not only will her life be at stake but all those that she holds near and dear will be in danger too. Can she keep her life hidden? There really is a lot more layers. From action, violence, even some romance, not a lot but a bit, and I think that there will be more to come in the next installment that we will get with her story. That one is the ‘My Tragic Life’ and it is available so I am planning to go start that one as soon as I finish this review. I can’t wait! Thanks for another great read!

My Hidden Life: Brothers of Camelot Prequel is the first book in the My Life Series by Necie Navone. All I can say is wow, what a story.

Alessandra doesn’t have the wonderful privileged life you would think as a Princess. But she is the Princess of a crime family and her Father who is also the head of the family can be a bit stubborn and unwilling to listen to anyone once his mind is set.

  • We get a brief glimpse of Alessandra in the first book of the Brothers of Camelot series. This was a great way to start this spinoff series and I cannot wait to find out what happens next and if she finds her way back to her heart.View all my reviews

Necie Navone has written a beautiful series called My Life. I enjoyed reading this story as the characters are fully developed and believable. It is written so it is read in a steady pace. There seems to be activity that keeps things moving. The story is about Alessandra. Her family is a “crime” family. She is the next leader of her family. She knows this and has to keep this life a secret from her friends. There has been an accident and her uncle comes to take care of her and raise her. It is hard to keep her life as simple as possible. There is a lot of action and coming of age for Alessandra. With this being book 1 the rest of the books seem promising.

My Hidden Life: Brothers of Camelot Prequel (My Life Series Book 1) by Necie Navone. I LOVED this book. Its the story of a crime family and their 6 year old daughter Alessandra who is set to be next to lead the family. She tries to live a normal life but its extremely difficult because she can’t share a lot of her life with her friends. At her 6th birthday party she is given the famous headband or crown that she has to wear at family gatherings and at that same party as they are leaving she is shot by the Families number one enemy. After she survives the shooting her Uncle makes it his goal to teach Alessandra to take care of herself. He teaches her to shoot a gun, self defense and to know her surroundings. She excels in most all the while trying to be a normal young girl. As she gets older and draws the attention of boys her life is given a whole other round of complications. Her father is determined to arrange a marriage for her but she is determined to pick her own partner. Its the story of a strong willed young girl trying to change a family set in deep, dark, traditions. I can not wait to read the next book!

My Hidden Life is the Brothers of Camelot series prequel and the first book in My Life series by Necie Navone. I was really taken with the first book in the Brothers of Camelot, and as a prequel, this is such a fantastic addition to the storyline and ‘bigger picture’ that Ms. Navone is painting.
After the tantalizing snippet that we got at the end of ‘The Only One’, this book has only heightened my interest, even more than it already was. I practically inhaled this book, zipping through it in one sitting because I was desperate to find out what happens, who the elusive Aless was, and how she and Greyson meet. Well this book is far more complex than I had imagined. Yes, I did get some of my answers, but I also got more of Aless’s compelling story- because this book starts from Aless’s early years and works its way through to her later teen years.
Alessandra Canzano was born into an Italian crime family, the only child of the powerful and ruthless Capo (boss). She is their Princess, treated as royalty and living a fairytale life- until her sixth birthday when danger makes itself known, changing her life forever.
Her father had big plans for her right from the moment she was born, but after the events at her sixth birthday, he becomes even more controlling and obsessive. Alessandra’s beloved Uncle was tasked with training her, as he would one of the men. From the age of six she learnt hand to hand combat, then at eight she began weapons training as well. She was to tell no one of her training, or the reasons behind it. She was to keep that part of her life hidden from her mother, grandmother, family and friends.
Aless soon became one of the best fighters in ‘the family’, easily able to out shoot and defeat any of the men in hand to hand combat. But she was also learning a lot more about her family, their business, and the role in it all. She feels the heavy burden of responsibility and expectation, wishing she could just live a normal life. She has one brief encounter with a boy that stays with her long after he’s gone. Holding that moment in her heart and dreaming of a life with someone who loves her passionately.
Although she may be the family Princess, she feels more like a prisoner. The more she learns, the more she questions whether she can be a part of that world anymore. She starts to wonder if she would be better off running away and leaving it all behind. With danger an ever-present part of her life, Aless will have to remain vigilant. She is determined to find a way to avoid what her father has planned. But what can she do? Will she have no choice but to buckle under the pressure to preform to his expectations? What exactly does her father have planned for her? What does she uncover along the way? Where does Greyson fit into all of this? Does she end up staying because she’s afraid of losing everyone she loves? O will she finally escape her gilded prison? What does her future hold?
While we do get some of those answers in this exciting instalment, there is still a lot to uncover in the next book, “My Tragic Life”- which I have already devoured, because I just couldn’t wait to continue Alessandra’s story. Shocks, twists, tragedy, lessons and more await Aless.
Ms. Navone is a wonderful storyteller, weaving a superb story that plucked at my heart strings, had me on the edge of my seat most of the time- whilst also creating characters who came to life, pulling me into their world and holding my attention right through till the end. The story is told from several POV’s which gave the story an extra element of interest. There was a lot going on in this book, lots of action, suspense, some violence, emotion, drama, and just a drop of romance.
Brilliant!

Thank you, Ms Navone!

My Hidden Life: Brothers of Camelot Prequel, by Necie Navone, is the first book in the My Life Series. This coming of age/crime fiction story was well written and an instant page turner. The author delved straight into the story leaving nothing left to chance setting the stage for where we begin and what is potentially to come. I enjoyed the flow of the story and it felt well paced. Alessandra is a complicated character and Necie Navone showcases that as this story progresses. I look forward to seeing what hurdles she encounters in the subsequent stories and what growth she will experience.

This really was a beautifully written story. This is the second book that I have read by this author but this first in this prequel series to the Brothers of Camelot. I really enjoyed reading Alessandro’s story even it was emotional at times. I enjoyed reading her journey of how she became the woman I read about in The Only One. The author’s detailed writing enabled me to be fully invested in the story. I am really looking forward to the next one in the series to find out more about these great characters!

This is a Coming of Age-Crime Family story that I couldn’t put down until the last page. This is my favorite yet by this author. I loved how she pulled me into the story from the first word. This is a story about a young girl whose future is to run the Canzano Family. Alessandra is a strong girl who struggles to feel normal in a normal family. There are some emotional situations that pulled at my heartstrings but they make the story into what it is. I highly recommend this book!

The story My Hidden Life: Brothers of Camelot Prequel (My Life Series Book 1) by Necie Navone is a coming of age book that includes an air of suspense that sometimes has you wondering what is going to happen next. It is the story of a girl who is the Princess of the Canzano crime Family and who is the one her father has chosen to take over when the time comes. I enjoyed reading about Alessandra. She is a strong, resourceful, and confident young woman. She has learned how to defend herself from a young age and has learned how to do so very well. It is also a bit sad to read about how Alessandra’s life is so controlled. She is a girl that wants to be normal and take part in the activities that other’s her age does, however, she is finding that can never be the life that she leads. Alessandra is also not as naïve as some would believe her to be. She knows about her family and about some of the business that they in. Alessandra’s uncle is a large part of her life. The story is told from her and her uncle’s POV. She is like a daughter to him and he is very protective of her. Another part of Alessandra’s life that is sad is how her father is absent from involvement in it. He is a hard man and I found cruel at times. There are many other characters that are introduced in the story. Many of them are other family members or a few select friends that Alessandra has and interacts with. Others are there to protect her as a member of the Family. This is a story that had me hooked from the very beginning and I didn’t want to put it down until I had finished the last page. It is wonderfully written and enjoyable to read. It is a book I would recommend.
