I picked up this book, as I do have a penchant for writing and I was really inspired and impressed with this book. The author has put in a lot of hard work to list out a check list based on her own years of experience.
The points she details out to consider when writing the historic novel, like, when, what happened during the period, could be a change of power or natural calamities and research on what would be appealing to the audience at that point of time. The book also details out the process of writing a novel, pointers from the conception to research, writing, editing, publishing and a lot more.
This book contains a plethora of valuable information and I think I will place an order for a printed copy very soon.

What a useful tool and helpful guide to those inspired to write a historical novel. Our imagination and inventive words only take us so far as writers can go but to write a novel within the grasp of a historical novel takes work and focus to bring our stories to life. Clark, a historical novelist, has used her previous works as not only examples but also using the works of many historical novels in bringing understanding to different aspects the writers need to be aware of when bringing historical components to their own novel. Old sayings and languages as well as place setting with events were some pinpoints she would describe its significance. Also having our story and characters and placing them into the historical setting and adding detail only the way with concepts of clothing, education, etc. Such a great read and definitely keeping this one as a future reference!

I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THIS HOW-TO NOVEL! From the moment I opened the book, it felt like I was sitting with a friend discussing options on how to get my book started. The way the author has written it is easy to understand and how to consider all the items needed when writing Historical Fiction. They rely heavily on their knowledge of British history and sprinkle random trivia through the centuries. One of my favorite tidbits is about the sanitation aspect throughout history! This book really made a point of knowing everything you can about the era your character lives in and things to think about! I’ve been dying to write something over these last few years and now I have a way to get started. I definitely appreciated the formatting chapter. My brain needs to understand how to best use the font, page layout, and what effects when working with different styles. As I said previously, this author makes it feel like you are over for tea and she is pumped to see you achieving your writing goal! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for guidance from a friend!

This was a really informative read! I have no plans or interest really in writing s historical romance novel but for anyone out there who is I would definitely recommend picking this book up! I thought the advice was really good and seemed informative to me. I took some of the tips that I feel I can apply in my everyday life. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this because like I stated above I’m not planning on writing anything in the near or distant future, but this one didn’t seem like a disappointment to me.

This is an extremely informative book that is written in such an easy-to-use way. It goes through the when, what, why, where, and who of writing a book while also breaking those down into important points (tasks) for each. Clark additionally covers important aspects like publishing options, formatting, and advertising. Keep in mind what works for one author may not work for all, but this is a great basis with amazing knowledge that Clark has acquired over her substantial career as an author. I have always dreamed of writing and thus have read many books on the subject. This by far is one of the best books out there. This book is a wonderful resource that will really help you think things through in order to not just write a good book, but a historically accurate one as well.

How To Write A Historical Novel And Love ItHow To Write A Historical Novel And Love It by T.L. Clark
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In this book the author gives you everything you could possibly need to know about how to write a historical novel. She delves into the details one would need to consider about not only what time period you might consider writing about but also includes information to consider on location, and characters. Another bit of valuable information to consider is what type of novel you are writing about. Other than a historical novel, is it fiction or romance? Is it a happily ever after story? It is important to consider what category your novel falls into and then from there what age category it falls into, as well as what classification or category it falls into. The author provides very thorough information about all of this and gives examples to illustrate how this works. She also provides tips and pointers on writing, laying out your story, and how to format it. The author provides invaluable information on the publishing process, how to advertise your book, and some pointers on reviews for your completed novel.

Things one might consider for when their novel takes place are more than just about that era. What happened during that era? Was there anything interesting that occurred? The author gives information about different time periods throughout history and includes interesting facts that occurred throughout each time period. Not only is the information very rich and detailed but she includes some absolutely fascinating facts about events that occurred, items that were invented and so forth. I was intrigued about when toilet paper was invented and what was used prior to the invention of toilet paper. In fact, it had been something that I was recently wondering about and was intending to research out of my own curiosity. It was a fun fact that I enjoyed learning more about.

The author includes information to consider when writing about your location and things to consider about that particular location. She mentions adding details I might not have necessarily considered to provide the would-be author a more vivid depiction of the scene they are trying to describe to their reader. It is important that the reader feel immersed in the scene and feel as though they are. This can be accomplished by adding details such as whether it is in the countryside, what the countryside looks like, and if there are farmers and so forth.

Information is provided about the character one would consider writing about and how to give descriptions without providing too much at once. Things to consider other than your character’s name would be their age, their clothing, social status, and where they live. Other things to consider and include would be your character’s level of education, and whether or not they are healthy. This information is broken down and summarized in an easy-to-learn format.

This book provided a wealth of invaluable information on how to write a historical novel as well as the entire writing process from start to finish. The author provides information about things to consider about time periods, locations, and character descriptions and how to write vivid scenes that pull the reader into the story. The tips and pointers on writing, format, and the publishing process were something that can be applied time and time again for other writing projects as well. I learned a lot about the writing process and thoroughly enjoyed how the author included witty comments throughout the book. I laughed out loud more than once and thought this provided a fun element to the book that kept me reading. This is one book that I will be adding a hard copy to my library so I can read time and time again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As someone who wishes to write historical fiction, I learned a lot about how to approach the research. The historical tidbits provided were interesting and I like the way the author highlights the little details, which can be important. The laid-back tone helped the information flow easily and seemed more like a conversation with the author than reading a book. Getting the information right when writing a historical fiction story has a great impact on gaining or losing a reader’s confidence and should be taken seriously. And doing the research correctly can bring a story to life. I can’t wait to put the tips into practice!

I love historical fiction. It’s my favorite genre to read, and I have always wanted to write my own. This fast, informative, non-fiction guide to writing a historical novel is fabulous for anyone who has ever wanted to take on this endeavor. It is easy to read and follow and breaks down each important step for you. This author’s style of writing is very easy going and personable and would be a quick, interesting read even if you aren’t an aspiring writer. This book has given me the motivation to get back to work on the writing projects I have let fall to the wayside because of lack of “know-how” regarding what to do after the piece is written. I am so glad this book fell across my path. 5 stars.

I didn’t necessarily pick this book intending to get back into writing, but the way the author has given guidance including the use of checklists has alleviated the feeling of being overwhelmed at the concept of writing to publish. They don’t hide the fact that writing is hard work, but the way forward is broken down into manageable steps.

The advice was given in an easy-to-understand way as it was written in a casual (and entertaining) style rather than strict formal instructions, which made the advice feel more accessible to me. In addition to this, the layout and formatting of the book made it easier to follow and if I want to refer back to it, I’m confident I’ll be able to find the information with ease.
The exercises/tasks at the each of the chapters were a nice touch, offering the chance of putting the lessons learnt into practice. I particularly liked this as I am very much a learn through doing person, so this really helped me see the value in what was said.

It was clear that the author put a lot of time into creating a very helpful guide, drawing on their own experiences and research to make the process easier on others who wish to write historical novels.
A bonus in my opinion is that I don’t think the advice given is necessarily limited to the historical novel, but could also be transferred into other types of writing.

I really enjoyed reading this as it got me excited to start considering start to finish what I could do to take the leap into published work, and who knows maybe I’ll actually finish one of my many drafts. Either way I found this enlightening, informative and worth the read!

How to Write a Historical Novel and Love It: A Beginner’s Guide to Researching, Writing, and Publishing a Historical Book is a well-rounded how-to book. I have read several novels by this author and always enjoy attention to detail. Here all of the pieces are broken down into easy to understand bits. Clark asks questions the author should’ve thought about before delving too far into writing their novel. The different parts include thinking about what period, location, weather, clothing, who is in power, and more. On top of giving sections to think about before moving too far into the writing process, Clark also gives examples for the writer to think about. This is written in a conversational form and allows one to read quickly. Also, because of the setup, it would be easy to go back and reference specific sections while writing. I thought this is a well-thought out handy book to keep if I ever start to write my historical novel.

Wow. This book is fantastically written, in my opinion. The author truly dives into every aspect of writing a book. From characters to publishing to picking the time frame of the story, the information is perfectly done. I didn’t feel like I was being pulled into the weeds of the how-to part of writing. The author gave a great overview of how to think about writing as well as executing it. I got the digital version of this book, and I will be looking to get a print copy. This way I am able to flip back and forth through the chapters and tab the most helpful (to me) parts!

After reading this book, I feel like I was given information to write a book to the best of my ability with the options laid out, as to how I would go about getting published. I don’t know that I am particularly ready to write at this point, but for sure will be keeping this book close to ruminate over in the coming months.

I found this to be a thoroughly well written and researched how to guide on writing a historical novel. The author was extremely knowledgeable in her history of not only Great Britain, but other countries as well. She takes you through the Who, What, Where, Why, and When and all of the pieces to consider with each of them. I enjoyed that the author not only gave very factual and informative information, but her voice was shown throughout the story and made it more enjoyable. It almost felt like you were sitting down with the author as she shared her information and thoughts on writing. After each section she had a small checklist for you to think about as you are writing your story and for new and seasoned writers I think it would be very helpful. This is a wonderful guide that could be helpful for not only historical writers, but writers in general.

What I Wish I’d Known: For Writers by H.D. Thomson – Review by Jamie Burns

I have always had 3 dream careers- teaching, librarian, and author. I have been a teacher for 6 years, I graduated with a degree in library science and I am currently a school librarian. So, that leaves only one dream, becoming an author. When I saw this book, I knew that I NEEDED to read it. I was instantly drawn into the book by Louis L’Amour’s quote, “Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on” I have been a big fan of his writing and knowing he said that has encouraged me. I have a journal of book ideas tucked on a shelf a work, and everything in me is screaming that I need to be writing more. I need to explore my passions more so that I can be successful at the craft that I dearly love. Each author offers golden nuggets of advice to readers. This book is perfect for someone who is just starting out, or anyone who wants some encouragement.

You get information on several different ways, just emphasizing how there’s no right way. You just have to find what works for you. With this variety, you should be able to find at least a few things to help you grow as a writer and get you one step closer to your dream of becoming published. This book is an easy, informative and interesting read that even includes advice from indie authors.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was fascinating to see inside the minds of different authors and how they each felt about their writing careers. Topics covered ranged from actually writing to the power of faith in yourself and the process of dealing with self-doubt, advice and the worth of persistence. All in all, I appreciated getting an insight into the author’s retrospection on their career and how they became published by finding their own process. It was encouraging and enlightening, all at once!

If anyone is thinking of becoming an author, I feel like this is a great book to add to your library to encourage you on days that are hard. Something you can have in your back pocket on to pull you out of the mire of bad thoughts.
