This is a wonderful and interesting book, not only for those who practice Paganism and/or witchcraft, but everyone. It shows that magic is everywhere and how to use certain objects, plants, things in healing and comfort. I absolutely love how she states that magic isn’t the crazy evil thing that people make it out to be, but instead that it is more so getting to know yourself and the earth more intimately. The book reads like a self-help book more than anything else. Would be great for anyone who practices paganism, witchcraft, beginners or more skillful, and even those who just are looking to make changes within their lives and connect to their feminine divine.

Maria DeBlassie explains how to live a magical life, full of synchronicity, divine receptivity, Goddess energy, and divine feminine energy using her own struggles as a woman of color to help others find the magic within their lives. Each chapter will end with some tips on how to make your lives magical.
Maria DeBlassie fills Practically Pagan – An Alternative Guide to Magical Living with relatable experiences and realistic ways to make your life magical. Although, there is no witchcraft or wizardry going on, any person of any gender, race, background, etc. can use her tips to find fulfillment in their lives. I found this book especially helpful for those who feel as though they have lost who they are with the hustle and bustle of life.
If you need some insight into how to feel more like yourself, find yourself, or overall tips on how to find the magic in your life, do not miss out on this book. It is full of insights, experiences, and rituals for anyone who needs it.

Maria DeBlassie has done a phenomenal job with this magical 😉 book! I absolutely love the way she has gone about providing the reader with information. Not only does she gently guide the reader on what they should do and why, but she also provides her own real, lived experiences to give the reader a sense of why we should listen to her. It’s not just a professor standing at the front of a classroom lecturing…she’s sitting down with the readers, having a conversation and providing experiences from her own life and saying, “Hey, this is what helped me when I was going through this and it might help you.” That’s what this book is like…having a conversation with DeBlassie. The other thing that she drives home over and over again is finding magic in the small and everyday and a lot of what we already do is magically. We just need to be more mindful and intentional with it to make it more meaningful. I 100% recommend this book to anyone (regardless of your religious beliefs) because you can apply it to your life. It’s about intentionality and making your life more magical. 🙂

Well, this book was just what I needed! “Practically Pagan – An Alternative Guide to Magical Living is an inspirational, self-help guide to opening up your own magic. I am formally of the Pagan faith, meaning I have not practiced in some time. However, lately a lot of my life has been leading me back to this way of thinking, believing, and living. I haven’t quite dived fully back in, but as I was pondering my next moves in life, this was the book I happened to stumble upon. The author says, that there is no coincidence that I was reading this book and I believe her. Now, I have read many of these types of books, but this one seemed a little different. One, I like how she gave background and explained the perspective that she is coming from. She makes it clear the message, but also allows you space for your own pagan awakening. Two, I love an author who gets personal with you. She provides her story about how she rediscovers the magic in her life. Her story was very relatable as I was reading, but I also realized I have already made many of the changes she speaks of having to do to heal. She provides a guide of where to start, what to look for, and that it is hard work, not only to recognize and wake up the magic within us, but to maintain that magic. Last, but not least, she discusses very easy ways to rid “toxins” from your life, making a routine to allow yourself time to enjoy life, and most importantly the importance of self-care. I was happy after reading that I am on a “cleansing” path and I hope to continue to awaken the magic within myself, and find the enjoyable ways that life is supposed to present us.

This is a beautifully written piece, regardless of your religious views. This book reminds us that there are bits of magic in everything. It goes on to explain how magic is so much more than what movies and stories show, and is something everyone may be doing without even realizing it! It delves a bit into the psyche of your mind and how you can use your wisdom to make things happen. And that can be magic! Maria DeBlassie shows practical examples and her lived life experiences to show and teach us more about everyday magic.
I whole heartedly recommend for anyone wanting to see more of themselves and look for the enchantment hidden in our everyday lives!

Practically Pagan – An Alternative Guide to Magical Living by Maria DeBlassie, is an interesting book for anyone, not just people practicing Paganism. This book helps you to see that there is magic in everyday things such as books and you can take what comfort and healing you want or can use from them. She states that magic isn’t the hocus pocus everyone thinks it is, but rather a way of getting to know yourself. It is even mentioned that you could already be doing some types of magic without realizing it. How the routines you already do can be considered ritualistic in nature. Magic is a mind set in a way!

I’m a fan of paranormal books and wanted to learn a little more about magic. Being a Christian, I wanted to see how different people believed and practiced those beliefs. I really enjoyed reading about her journey and learning more about everyday magic.

I went into this book thinking it would have some more alternative pagan practices and how that application applies to your day to day life. Only this reads much more like a self help book for those stuck in a rut and looking for a way out with a magical aspect. It is written very well and has a lot of information on what needs to be unlearned in your journey to make room for more fulfilling things. Would be great for anyone looking to make changes in their lives and to connect with the divine feminine.

I was surprised in a great way while reading this book. The author does her very best and succeeds at keeping you entertained! I felt very intrigued by every step and care for detail and now feel more knowledgeable and prepared to write and present a book! Not only did the author prepare you to present a book at various Cons, she helped you learn how to properly market yourself, your book, your table, and all with example photos as well. Every step of the way, a do and a don’t is given. I feel as if this is helpful in every area, whether you need to get your book sold, or if you need to get ready for the next job interview. There are many hidden skills that help you to know how to make your product stand out in a crowd! I was excited to read about each level of con, and where you will take too many chances, and when it is worth the money. Great tips. Very well written and entertained me all the way through! Quick yet informative read.

A nonfiction/self-help/business book with spunk and fun. Who woulda thunk it?

I’m simply in love with this book. The author approaches what can be a daunting topic or idea with truth, insight, tips, and levity. This book isn’t just good for tips for selling your item(s), ideas, trade, etc., at Conventions, but can easily be applicable to everyday life aspects.

Some things are common sense, but it’s nice to have the reminder of things when making that checklist or practicing your sales pitch. Here, she also explains how sometimes not quite meeting a goal can be a good thing and better for you in the long run (gasp!).

I also enjoy how the author broke down each aspect that she was talking about and took you step by step through things, starting at the beginning: create your thing, then look into how to sell your thing (here, at Cons!).

I loved the way the author wrote and the way things flowed. This may be a nonfiction slash self-help slash business based book, but it has me interested in her fictional work(s), which I will be seeking out to add to my TBR (to be read) list.

I did not know what to expect with this book, but thoroughly enjoyed it. Comicon is foreign to me having never been (always wanted to go), but after reading her book I was ready to pack up and go. The information she gave was fun, insightful, and given in a way that I did not feel overwhelmed. All the facts and advice given felt practical and something that a beginner starting at Comicon would use to be successful. I loved the pictures and side stories she shared, and especially enjoyed the ways she gave to sell yourself. This book genre is one I have not explored before, but I would definitely pick up again, and I plan to also make sure I check out one of her books!

The cover grabbed my attention. As my first non-fiction read of 2022, I can say that this book is captivating, as well as informing. The author gives witty tongue-in-cheek advice to her audience. I learned about selling to cons (which are conventions, typically sci-fi or fantasy conventions), and how to set up a vendor booth. This is information which can actually be applied to anything you sell, or even display. I find myself re-thinking some of my classroom displays now.

Con Quest was a great beginners guide on how to sell at cons. While the book focuses on selling books the principles mentioned in this book would work for any item you’re selling at a con. The book also mentions the networking involved that happens before, during, and after cons. If I ever decide to open a venture that would have me running a booth and making sales at a con you can bet that this book will be tagging along to help me with its tips and tricks on the trade. For instance she mentions the benefits of your booth neighbors and even some of the benefits of being friendly to security and staff.

This book is chock full of information for authors on how to sell at geek and nerd cons. The author shares her wisdom on everything she knows about how to sell your book successfully. Her knowledge stems from years of experience selling at cons and she includes personal stories of learning experiences from selling her books over the years. It includes tips on how to set up your table, how much inventory to bring, and how to pitch your book to potential buyers. It even includes pictures!

I loved how this book was laid out and found it very easy to read. It was informative and packed full of information. The author clearly knows her stuff and has gained her knowledge from her own personal experience. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is considering selling their books at geek and nerd cons.

“ConQuest: The Art of Selling at Cons,” by Megan Mackie is a very useful book which gives a lot of detailed information on how to successfully market and promote self-published works. I picked this book as I do intend to self publish my books and I was looking for guidance. I know of many first time authors who struggle to promote their books and end up paying tons of money to the retailers to place them in the stores. The checklist is very useful for the promotional events. Though she does center the book around a particular genre, I think the strategies could be applied across genres to market your book. Very useful book. Definitely recommended.

This self-help book did deliver on giving clear and concise advice on making good decisions for selling your work at Cons aka Conventions. But what I thought would only be a swiftly spoken manual on what to do or how to attain sales turned out to be a guide on the do’s and don’ts – but also answered some questions I didn’t think of before reading this. Everything from what kind of Cons you should be thinking of selling at to how to stack your books is given in this book, along with a few side stories from the author about other things you may encounter at Cons. I really enjoyed the way everything was lain out in the book and the tips/tricks given. This was a quick read that really opened my eyes to the selling of books at Cons, and I recommend this for anyone who’s looking for some information on selling at these types of events!

This was filled with what I thought was useful information. Some seemed like “common sense” but for me, it was important because I often forget the “small details” or what seems like common sense, so it was nice to have that as a reminder. I really enjoyed the use of personal examples, it helped things click a lot easier for me. I plan to keep this around and use it for reference in the future. I believe the advice and examples in this book could be used for a lot more than selling books! I would recommend it!

This book was spectacular. I decided to read it because I have always wanted to write a book but have never had any idea how I could successfully sell it. I tend to have a hard time reading non-fiction books, or how-to books and that was not the case with this book. I appreciate the way the author wrote it, almost like they were standing in front of me sharing this information. It also made it very easy to read because it gave information in a clear and concise manner without being condescending.

As a writer myself, when I saw this book I knew I had to read it, and I wasn’t disappointed one bit! The book wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I went into thinking it was geared for writers that wanted to sell at ComicCon. I was pleased to see that she wrote it so that writers could go to all kinds of Cons and be successful, as that is what initially appealed to me when choosing the book to read. There were definitely many points in the novel that might be common sense to established authors that were of great help to me, so I was very thankful that she wrote it to benefit all sorts of authors, whether they are just starting out in the publishing world or have been on the top of the New York Times Bestseller List.

ConQuest: The Art of Selling at Cons by Megan Mackie is an interesting and informative guide for authors who may be looking at other ways to promote and sell their work. Ms. Mackie speaks from her own experience, sharing methods that have worked for her. The guide is easy to follow and understand, with simple suggestions that are fairly easy to implement.
This guide may be aimed at authors and their books, but a lot of this information could also be useful in selling other products too.
Informative and thought-provoking!

This book will help any author thinking of selling at cons- whether the con is small or large. The author breaks it down for the reader on what to do and not to do at cons of all sizes. I personally would have never thought of many of the key points the author brought up. From how to lay out your table to individuals you will encounter on your con quest, you will be more prepared than other first time authors at cons.
I recommend this book to any author who is going to or is thinking of selling at cons.

I am not an author, and I have no intention of attenting conventions to sell my unwritten book…but my husband and I do operate a home business, and intend on branching into more areas. We have attended and sold at many farmers markets and vendor fairs, and learned many things about selling to people walking by with trial an error – and this book is really, really great and informative.

It gives you all the tools you need, and it starts with the basics – where to put your name on items, etc. It is the best kind of guide – open, honest, and with lessons learned through her own trial and error. Even if you have no intention of selling items at events, this is an informative read that might help you in other ways. Highly recommend. Outstanding advice. Well done book.

Well I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when starting this book but I certainly was not disappointed. I think that this book is a very good resource for authors. This author does a fantastic job of setting up the foundations on how to get more traffic for books and find audiences. I was very impressed with the detail and step by steps. I was not aware of all the different types of conventions. I personally have met two authors at a convention and was introduced to their series and I have to say I was hooked on both and I think that this book is a great tool for authors who are starting out and also those who are well versed as they can always find new audiences as well. I find it impressive of the knowledge shared and look forward to more from this author.

I’m going to start my review by saying this: I have never wrote a book, I have no intentions of writing one, and I never plan to get a booth at a con. However, if I ever were to do so, this book had a lot of good advice on doing so and how to go about it! The author included checklists, life stories about her experiences, and well meaning advice. For a quick help guide I thought this was very practical and straight to the point. For an author or artist trying to get involved in a con I highly recommend this book! I think it could help anyone who’s wanting to get out there and do it!

I picked up this book because I’ve been considering branching out into working events. It’s a quick read, which is nice. There’s not a bunch of unnecessary stuff to weed through. I liked the personal examples the author gives. Most of what is included in this book is common sense stuff and yet simple things that often end up being forgotten in the hustle and bustle of preparing for an event. If you’ve worked events before (even if not as an author) you’ll recognize a lot of the tips in this book because some things are universal, no matter what you are selling. One thing I thought was awesome is that the author included a small section on interacting with neurodivergent people. As a neurodivergent person myself, this is really important thing to know!
