Charlotte’s Control (The Control Series) by Maggie Sims – Review by Shannen Kern

Charlotte's Control (The Control Series)Charlotte’s Control by Maggie Sims
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was my first book by this author, but I love a good historical romance novel, so I picked it up on a whim. It was a marvelous start to a series that I can’t wait to read more of! Getting to know Charlotte and William was amazing, and the age gap with an older woman was refreshing. Charlotte felt incredibly relatable, which made the emotions all the stronger. Also, can I get a real-life William please? His entire personality is addictive and swoon worthy. There are some intriguing steamy scenes as well and all tastefully done. I always worry that the author will lean too heavily on the spice allowing the plotline to be subpar. Maggie Sims doesn’t fall into this category as she created well-developed characters and a plot that will stand the test of time. Even the flow of the story is magnificent. If you enjoy historical romances or reverse age gaps, I highly recommend this be your next book. I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for us next!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was such a delightful chapter book to read with both of my kiddos! I read it through once, and then we read it altogether. It felt like we were going on the adventure with Kris which was an absolute blast! My kids are 8 and 12 years old so they’re close to the target audience range. My 8-year-old has a bit of trouble getting through some chapter books as he loses interest quickly, but he stuck with this one and said the pictures were fun. We go on an adventurous journey through the high seas that have none other than dangerous pirates! Even though I am much older than who the author is aiming for, I truly enjoyed journeying with Kris. I highly recommend having this in your classroom or at home for the young ones in your life!

I never hesitate to pick up a book by this author because I know I’m in for an amazing ride! The first book in the series was incredible, but this one surpassed it which caught me off guard. It’s a pretty quick read that you can fit into your afternoon, which is literally my only complaint because I want these to last so much longer! The author has an unbelievable way of expertly crafting the story to encompass everything you’d get in a longer book, even down to the development of the characters. I always love seeing the LGBTQ+ in any genre, but paranormal romances are definitely my jam. I can’t wait to see what the next book in this series has in store! I highly recommend picking this up if you enjoy short paranormal/fantasy romance that still feel incredibly detailed.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The first book in this series was incredible, but this second installment left me absolutely reeling! It was an emotional rollercoaster and threw in unexpected twists and turns. This one is also fast paced which left me forgetting about sleep completely because I needed to know what happened next. It does not start off slow by any means, and by the first few pages you will be absolutely enthralled. I truly appreciate that it highlights PTSD as I don’t feel like it is talked about enough, and these authors captured the heartbreaking points that some experience. There are some steamy romance scenes woven in as well, and the entire story flows flawlessly. Both of these authors are definitely on the top of my list of books to pick up, so I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next!

I hadn’t read anything by either of these two authors before, but the cover drew me in immediately. Once I started this book, I was completely captivated! I read this all-in-one sitting because it had me hooked with the twists and turns that I never saw coming. I truly enjoy mysteries but hadn’t ventured too far into medical mysteries yet. That has absolutely changed now. The fact that this one was based in Galveston, TX was super cool as we visit quite often. The plotlines are incredible, and the characters are not only well-developed but felt entirely relatable. The cataclysmal health crisis these authors painted a picture that is so familiar with the recent epidemics which made it all the more believable. If you’re looking for a fast-paced thriller that you won’t be able to put down, this should be your next pick hands down. I can’t wait to see the next book in the series!

This book gave me a severe case of wanderlust! Although Scotland and Ireland are top on my travel bucket list, England is close behind them. I was drawn in by the gorgeous cover only to find even more stunning pictures inside! The author has such a way of putting this together that it feels like you’re transported to the country itself. I absolutely loved the chapter on superstitions and beliefs as I love to learn about all cultures. There is also a lovely chapter on planning your trip to England and all of the questions you may not think about! They review how Bed & Breakfasts are delightful to stay at and not at all priced like the United States. There are also great tips on budgeting and how to find good deals. Whether you are looking to plan your trip to England or just learn more about the country, this is a great book to pick up!

Scotland is one place at the top of my bucket list, so when I saw this book, I knew I had to pick it up. I was completely immersed once I opened the first page! The photographs are absolutely gorgeous and make me want to visit even more now. I truly enjoyed the author sharing less touristy spots because those are some of the best gems anywhere in the world you go. The chapter on superstitions and beliefs was incredibly interesting, and I hadn’t heard of many of them. There is also a great chapter that will assist in planning your trip to wonderful Scotland. If you travel often then some of these tips are probably already in your repertoire, but for someone like me who doesn’t have the opportunity to journey often, that chapter is SO appreciated! My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was my first book by this author, and I am blown away! The author grabs your attention from the very beginning with some steam and a woman who knows what she wants. I loved Emma the entire way through and her chemistry with Liam leaps off the pages. There are plenty of spicy scenes, but the author in no way relies on it to carry the storyline. I appreciate the flow of the story as everything progresses naturally, and the characters feel incredibly well-developed. Emma feels relatable as I feel like we’ve all been burned by an ex-partner who made us build walls and draw bridges to keep others out. Her ex-boyfriend, Stuart, had made some awful decisions and without revealing any spoilers, I definitely yelled out loud at him when some of the twists and turns happened! The author had me ALL the way invested in Liam and Emma and put sleep behind me as I stayed up to read the entire book in one day. I highly recommend picking this up if you’re looking for a steamy romance with a bit of unpredictability! I can’t wait to pick up more books by this author.

I absolutely loved everything about this book! The rhyming keeps both of my kiddos engaged as do the beautiful illustrations. Being educated about how big of a deal getting a dog is gets overlooked these days. People (even adults) go into it blindly or with little education just to find out they’re not prepared or not a good fit for a certain breed. Dogs absolutely become a member of the family, and the author really hit so many good points throughout this book. I love that CJ and Lora did so much research on dogs and not just what was fun or the quickest way to get their parents to agree! The author did an amazing job demonstrating multiple aspects of pet ownership. I would highly recommend this book for a classroom or home setting to educate young ones on this great responsibility!

This was a cute addition to the Youth Sleuths Chapter Books series! You don’t have to read these in any order at all. My youngest is 8 years old and these chapter books are the perfect fit for him! I feel like the chapters are the ideal length as he can get discouraged if it takes too long to make progress. The illustrations are simple but incredibly helpful (and cute!) for younger readers to see what’s going on. Something else I really appreciated was the list of Tier 2 words and discussion prompts to help kiddos dig deeper. There are also more resources available using the QR code or link provided in the book which I will be recommending to all educators in our lives. Whether you’re looking to add this to your school curriculum or for home reading, I highly recommend this book (and this series) because it truly engages the kids in so many different ways.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am so happy that this author decided to put together a box set because it is one of my favorites from her! If you enjoy historical romance and all that comes with it, do yourself a favor and pick these up.

The True Purpose of Vines
I had accidentally read the second book in the series first, so I obviously ran back to pick this one up. I’m pleased to say that it is simply magnificent! Historical romance is one of my favorite genres and this may be one of my very top books in that category right now. The way the author paints Portugal throughout this story is beyond magical. You feel like you are truly there experiencing the country itself. I loved Julia as she is such a strong female character especially in the time period where women were supposed to be meeker. I didn’t particularly like Griffin at first, but he definitely grows on you if you give him a chance. I highly recommend picking this book up to find out for yourself!

The Taste of Light
I didn’t realize this was a series until I started the book, so I definitely went back to read the first one! Even without reading the first, I was able to follow along well enough and enjoy the entire story. I feel the author did an amazing job with this emotional romance. I especially enjoyed the beautifully written scenery throughout the story which helped pull everything together for me. It was absolutely a book that I breezed right through and needed to know what was going to happen next. I’m excited to see what the author has planned for the third book! I highly recommend picking this up and reading it in order to get the full effect.

The Truth About Myths
I have enjoyed this series so much and this installment has made it even better! If you are at all into historical romance, then you can stop reading this review and just pick up the book/series. It’s absolutely worth it! I neglected a lot of responsibilities to read this book because I just couldn’t pull myself away. We get to follow Isabel and Henrique in this book and trust me when I say they will make you swoon! This has been my favorite book in the series so far, and I hope the author continues this world because it is phenomenal. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is into historical romance, but even if you aren’t, I believe you will enjoy this book just as well!

I can’t remember the last time the first book in a series blew me away like this. This is the second book I’ve read by this author, and that’s all it took for me to be a die-hard fan. The way she expertly crafts a plot that completely absorbs you from the first chapter is unbelievable! While there are plenty of steamy scenes in this book, the author doesn’t rely on it to carry the story at all. You’ll be taken on an emotional rollercoaster as Jolie works her hardest to provide for her children, one having cystic fibrosis and needing a lot of care. Cyrus meets Jolie and sparks fly, but they’re both hiding something that could change everything. I highly recommend this sweet and spicy romance and bet you won’t be able to put it down either. Aiming at the 8–12-year-old audience, I feel that it’s a perfect match because my youngest is 8 and my oldest is 12, and they fell in love with it as soon as we started reading together! The chapters may feel a bit long in the beginning to the younger age range, but all is well once they find their groove. It is fast-paced and takes you on quite the journey through the woods with Beth, Timmy, and Arthur. Cody the dog is there to offer a secret superpower and assist in solving the mystery. This was such a cute and quick read for my afternoon! You can easily get through this in one day as it’s nearly impossible to put down once you start. I felt like Laura was incredibly relatable and loved the way she evolved as the story went on. It’s also very refreshing to read about a love story that involves a woman that isn’t the typical 20-something year old because that trope is overdone, I feel. I’m also a bookworm so knowing that Laura finds courage in a book club was marvelous! You can feel the work that was put into the characters that make them all the more lovable. When Loretta happens upon some luminous larvae, she is intrigued and embarks on a journey to understand the life cycle of these new creatures. I love the way the author is able to flawlessly weave educational tidbits without losing the interest of kiddos. This is my favorite book in The Olympic Peninsula series by far! I already loved the previous books so it was a no brainer that I would pick it up and enjoy it. What an amazing and helpful guide to teach kids about yoga, healthy habits, and mindfulness! I have two kiddos, ages 8 and 12, and I will say that the author targeted this book perfectly for that audience. We absolutely loved reading through it together and learning about kindness and self-awareness. The activities in the book are perfect for all levels, and we really enjoyed doing them together. I enjoyed the author weaving the thought of plants in comparison to ourselves because sometimes I feel that’s a barrier with teaching kids self-care. When you can relate it to something they can see and understand outside of their own bodies, it helps connect the dots so to speak. I also loved the affirmations included as well! I enjoyed that this was a little longer than most of the books I’ve read lately as I typically feel that it ends too soon. The stories in the paranormal & young adult romance genre can blend together and feel a little ‘been there done that,’ but the author really found some unique perspective to add here! It typically takes me awhile to find my groove but not this time. This is the first book in the Stevie Capot Chronicles, and the author has started out like a strike of lightning! I love that this story is told from multiple points of view as it makes me feel like I’m getting each character’s unique perspective. This is categorized as a Steampunk/Sci-Fi/Fantasy, and I must say that it somehow fits that to a T. The characters are incredibly well developed, and you can feel how much work has gone into building this amazing world. The flow of the story is one of my favorites though because some books tend to feel like chunks of a story instead of a continuous tale when multiple POV is involved. This author knew exactly how to make it flow from one person to another with such ease. I highly recommend picking this up if you are looking for an adventurous paranormal read for your weekend!
