This is another winner in the series. Julia is still working through her issues and now she has to figure out how to work her talents and other items. The writing is strong. The characters are each so unique and I love how they are, because they come from different units and somehow mesh well together even with some mistrust. Julia is strong and has come through so much. I love how she has grown throw the series. The storyline is interesting and grabs you. This really isn’t meant to be a standalone as you may be lost if you try. This author does such a terrific job with her books that you just can’t put them down.

Middle school is a huge challenge all by itself but Silas Fitzpatrick has a bigger challenge because of his growth harmony disorder . But Silas maintains a positive attitude and tries to face the adversity bravely . Bullying is a constant threat and Silas is a victim of uncomfortable treatment both from the teachers and students . Silas is an inspiration for each one of us reminding us that we have to improvise constantly and be a little better version of oneself than what we were yesterday. It is a well written book which conveys a beautiful message to stand up against adversities in a positive spirit .

This was a very interesting book. I enjoyed it very much. I think it gave a very accurate presentation of what some kids go through when they start a new school, especially if they are just a little bit different. I also liked the story line about Silas’ grandfather’s struggle with Alzheimer’s. The accurate portrayal of the struggle that families face when a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s was very good. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has felt alone as I think it will give them hope and comfort.

This is a great story for late elementary and early middle school kiddos. I loved the messages throughout this book. We read it together as a family and talked about bullying and standing up for what is right. For reference, my kids are 7 and 11, and I think that age frame is spot on. Both of my kids are also the smaller ones in their classes which made this even more relatable for them. I enjoyed the illustrations, and the flow of this story was great. What a great way to get people talking about fairness, friendships, and fitting in!

Silas is the new kid at school, and if that isnt terrifying enough, he is much smaller than the other kids in his grade. Even after all the horror stories about 6th grade that his grandfather has told him, Silas is still pretty open minded about it all. Even Silas’ teachers do not believe he is 11 years old, and he is removed from his English class on the first day! Not long after starting school, Silas becomes the target of the class bully…but he also starts making friends. When Chad (the bully) runs for class president, Silas knows he can not let him win. This gave me very David and Goliath vibes, in a way. The characters in this book are full of behaviors and attitudes that are realistic. As a mother of a sixth grader, I enjoyed this story as it gave me some insight into the real life struggles of acceptance that we seen in our real lives this year. This story about acceptance and middle school behaviors hit home, and I will have my son read it as he prepares for 7th grade!

When I first started reading this book I thought it was going to be a fairy light hearted and feel good story of a young boy overcoming challenges and “defeating” a bully. This book was so much more than that, and so much more emotional than I thought it would be. It was the relationship between Silas and his grandfather that stood out to me the most. It was beautiful and heart breaking at the same time and I loved everything about it.
I have only read a few books by this author so far but this one is definitely my favourite. I am hard pushed to see how another will beat this. I would urge everyone to read this book.

This was such a sweet read, even though it’s a children’s book I loved it so much. Silas was such an adorable character and I just loved his attitude towards everything. I can see how passionate the author was about this book when she wrote it, it shines through on every single page and through the characters. I loved the email part to the story between Silas and his Grandfather, for some reason it felt so personal and made everything seem so much more relatable. I love how many talking points this book has for children.
This really was a lovely read and I would highly recommend it.

Small Fry is a children’s chapter book aimed for middle school aged children between eight to twelve years old. I started to read to my five year old and decided to see what it’s about first then read to him. This author has a way of grabbing your attention and will keep you turning the pages till the end. Her characters are relatable and fully developed. Some of them made me sad and others were simply not nice. There is a very important message in this book and I think every middle school aged kid should read it. Let’s face it kids are mean and bullying is not ok. Silas is in sixth-grade and he is shorter than everyone else in sixth grade by a lot. He has a medical issue that’s makes it hard for him to grow. Good thing he meets some new friends who don’t care about his size and silas bonds with them in band practice and then there’s big bully chad. He decides to make them his new target. Silas over hears chad is running for class president so he decides to run as well to stand up to chad . What happens when a disaster strikes? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next.

Silas Fitzpatrick has had enough of being invisible. As his sixth grade class begins he finds it hard to get adults to listen to him. He is extremely short for his age, due to lacking healthy growth hormones. His grandfather is a great man to email and gives Silas advice as to help him get along at school. Silas also has made friends who see him for who he is, and not by his size. This author has many ways of getting her point out in this story. She helps all the children see that they are so much more. I love how this book is encouraging and would recommend it to all children ages 8 and older. I must say Silas is extremely brave and patient with those around him. I love the interactions between his grandfather as well as his new friend. This should be a must read for all who have or are children. Excellent Story!

Small Fry by Stephenie Wilson Peterson – Review by Jamie Burns

This is one of the best books that I have read yet! Let me tell you, as an elementary librarian, I have read a LOT of books. Small Fry is both a heartwarming and relatable for children. Middle school is hard and difficult enough because you are just trying to find yourself and survive all of the changes in your body and becoming a teen. It is even harder for Silas he was born with a growth hormone deficiency which makes him look younger than his actual age, but he also just started a new school. So he has to endure the torture of explaining his condition and unfortunately the bullying that comes with it. Just as Silas is finding his place at school, he is faced with a challenge from Chad the “Popular” kid and the person that is responsible for making Silas’ life difficult. Chad has Mrs. Halliday, a teacher who happens to be his godmother on his side. Will Silas be able to defy the odds and defeat Chad in the school elections?

This book was well written and seems to be very authentic with from the characters to all of the challenges they face. The cover art brings the whole story together and I love the art at the end of each chapter. I love that the back matter has information about both the growth hormone deficiency and Alzheimer’s Disease. I think the only thing I would have loved to see in addition would be some information about cyber bullying since the book touched on it too. Overall, this book was fantastic and I look forward to reading more books by Stephenie Wilson Peterson.

This beautiful, story was obviously written with love and the characters came alive on the page. I would highly recommend this lovely children’s book.

Excellent book, especially for kids. There is a lot to learn from this book, and will definitely be passing it on to my nephews. Silas is such a good boy, the fact that he has moments where he could retaliate against Chad, but doesn’t shows how mature he is. I hated seeing him get picked on for being small, kids are one thing but for a teacher to not help in any way, blew my mind. I hope any kid that reads this book can identify at their school if a teacher isn’t supporting them so they can get the help or support they need. On top of the bullying and running for class president, Silas has to worry over his grandpa who has Alzheimer’s. The books does a great job of showcasing what this disease is all about and how it is affecting Silas. Again, wonderful book and highly recommended to middle school kids.

This is a great chapter book that tells the story of how awful middle school can be for those who are different. Silas is small for his age, due to a growth hormone deficiency. He is new the the school after having to move away from where he grew up – and that includes away from his best friend, his grandpa. As the new kid at school, Silas finds that he is an easy target for the bullies of the school. Unfortunately, that isn’t just the kids – it includes a teacher. He has to deal with all of this, while coming to terms with his Grandpa’s alzheimers diagnosis. It is a hard start to the year, but Silas finds his voice and his ability to stand up for what is right.

This is such a fantastic book. It is a middle grade book that tells such an important story. Silas is starting middle school, as if that isn’t bad enough he’s moved to a brand new town. More importantly he has a growth hormone deficiency. This makes him much smaller than the average middle schooler. Oh and did I mention that his grandfather is no longer living near by and is going through some changes of his own. Which means his grandfather isn’t the steadfast rock that he is used to leaning on. Silas ends up being bullied by the students, and honestly by some teachers at his new school. But he won’t take being bullied lying down, he ends up running for class president. Which definitely has its ups and its downs.
This is such an amazing book. It holds so many positive messages. This is one that I will be using as a read aloud next school year. I really enjoyed Silas and how he persevered through difficult challenges. I definitely recommend this story!

Silas Fitzpatrick is used to being small for his age because of a Growth Hormone Disorder but that does not prepare him for what happens to him on his first day of sixth grade. When he walks into class the teacher mistakes him for a lost elementary school student because of his small size. When Silas tries to explain to her that he is eleven years old she still does not believe him and sends him to the Principal’s Office. The Principal also does not believe him so the first day of middle school starts off bad.

Silas does not let the mishaps surrounding his small size on the first day of middle school stop him from making friends. He joins band class where he meets a group of other students who also face challenges because they are different. These differences have resulted in the school bully, Chad, calling them names and picking on them. Although Chad still picks on the others his bullying seems to be focused solely on Silas. He follows Silas around calling him names, throws spitballs at him, and pushes him around every chance he gets.

When Silas discovers that Chad is running for sixth grade class president he decides to run as well. Along with his friends they decide to start a misfit revolution as their way of standing up to the school bully. However, Chad wants to win and will do so at any cost. Silas must be brave enough to stand up to his bully and overcome his fear of what others think of him because of his small size. As he struggles through the challenges he faces at middle school he finds small comfort in emails he sends to his grandfather. The two have always been close and his grandfather is good at keeping the secrets Silas tells him. Sadly, his grandfather is starting to lose his memory and does not always remember who Silas is.

Throughout the book Silas messages his grandfather and tells him how school is going and the struggles he is facing, not just with the school bully but with one of the teachers as well. His English teacher hates him and does not treat him well because she believes his small size is a barrier. As Silas confides in his grandfather through messages, he also struggles with how his grandfather is slowing losing his memory because of Alzheimer’s. My heart broke for Silas as he had to come to terms with his grandfather not always remembering who he was.

This was a beautifully written story as told from the point of view of an eleven-year-old boy about how he navigates through the challenges he faces because he is small for his age. It is a heartfelt story geared towards middle school children and discusses the sensitive topic of being bullied for being different. Silas might be small, but he is mighty as he does not allow the bully to get the best of him. He perseveres and overcomes anything thrown at him, no matter how difficult it may be. No matter how badly he was treated he still chose to stand up for others. Silas is a true inspiration with a pure heart and courageous nature.

Silas Fitzpatrick is starting his sixth grade year at Frederick Middle School. He’s heard horror stories from Grandpa about the sixth grade. Silas has a pretty optimistic attitude about sixth grade and on top of that, at a new school in a new community for him. The first day of school, he finds his way to English class to have his teacher dismiss him immediately. You see, Silas is much smaller than most kids his age due to a growth hormone issue. Things just seemed to go downhill for Silas in his sixth grade journey until he decides to run for class president. A good friend that he makes along the day comes along to save the day and his birthday!

This book evoked many emotions as I read it!! I love the relationship that Silas has with his Grandpa and the emails that they send back and forth. They had an understanding of each other that no one else had with either of them. I love the band of misfits and I understood them all too well, as I am/was a misfit! (view spoiler)[I severely disliked Chad and Kyle but the actions of the English teacher had me incredibly incensed. The nerve of that teacher!!!! ACK!!! (hide spoiler)]

This book is going to stick with me for awhile. I’m not a fan of bullying at all! The medical complexities that this young man, who is inspired by the author’s son, along with those of the Grandfather really tug at my heart. However, there is a happy ending on this one!

The author, Stephenie Peterson, has captured the behaviorisms, attitudes, and angst of middle school students. The main character, Silas, struggles with a bully, but due to friendships and his family, turns his life around. This book would be a great conversation starter for anyone with kids entering middle school.

Being an educator myself, I did find some of the teachers’ behaviors to be almost as poor as the worst students they were in charge of, and not the adult role models the student body needed. I enjoyed the inclusion of modern events, such as the pandemic, and aware of disabilities, such as Alzheimer’s, that were seamlessly integrated within the story.

Small Fry by Stephenie Wilson Peterson is a charming and heart-felt children’s chapter book aimed towards middle-school-aged kids. It is a really well-woven story full of lots of heart and soul- with topics such as bullying, being different, wishing to be ‘normal’, wanting to fit in, and standing up for yourself and others makes the story both fun and a little emotional. Add in family dynamics, friendship, tension, lessons, corruption, a school election, a little drama, fraud, and cheating- and this story takes an intriguing turn.
A fun little adventure about embracing and accepting ourselves and our differences, standing up for what you believe in, facing challenges, and being brave.
Happy Reading!

Small Fry is a children’s book was inspired by Stephenie’s son and the passion and love shine through in the narrative. Part of the story is uniquely told by Silas and his Grandfather by email.
Silas has a growth hormone deficiency and is smaller than other kids. He soon finds himself on the radar of the bullies when he starts 6th grade middle school because of his size. Don’t they say good things come in small packages?
The story takes us on a journey of what life is like for Silas and how he navigates all that is thrown at him.
Silas captured my heart from the beginning all the way to the end. Chad and his bullying ways not so much.

If you think that every elementary school is the same, then you are wrong, one school in particular is very unusual, this is Orchard Ridge Elementary School, however, only a few people are privy to the secret. One day a group of students are in the library for a typical lesson with the elderly Librarian, where she talks about the difference between the types of books and their content, for one student, this was her favourite lesson and the Librarian her favourite teacher, but the class went on as normal until something scary happened.

A group of aliens from the Planet of Wart burst into the Library demanding that the Librarian hands over a mystery goo from the Cafeteria which they want to use to spaghettify the Milky Way and rule the Galaxy, but when they are refused, they decide to trap the students and use them as leverage. This is when the Librarian enlists the help of two of her students to help her stop the Aliens, but will they be able to do it?

This is a fun filled children’s sci-fi book which is a delight for all ages, as three unlikely people stand between Aliens and the destruction of the Galaxy.
