The Exchange by Nadija Mujagic – Review by Chrissy Spulak

The Exchange: A NovelThe Exchange: A Novel by Nadija Mujagic
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This novel is a gripping story of an aspiring actor, Sam Crawford, and the unthinkable decision that she has to make. No matter what decision she makes, her life will be altered. This is a psychological thriller that does not disappoint. This story is realistic enough to frighten you into turning page after page. It is a decently paced story, with characters that make you care about the outcome. It is suspenseful and unpredictable and leaves you breathless with anticipation. The only thing I had trouble with was putting it down when reality beckoned. If you are looking for a suspenseful read that keeps you so engrossed that your eyes just zoom over the pages and your mouth hangs open, this is it. I highly recommend this book.

This story has the potential to be a best seller!

The storyline is extremely interesting and has a lot of surprising twists, especially the end.

The main character’s inner dialog is all over the place but in a good way, it kept me guessing what was real and what wasn’t. I was truly expecting it all to have been a psychotic breakdown or something.

My only reason for not giving this book 5 stars is because there are some time-line and time jumps that were really confusing and that took away from the story.

If the author sorts out those minor issues this book can definitely be a best seller

This the first book by Nadija Mujagic I have read, and I was a little disappointed. I was expecting to get my feet knocked off. I can see a lot of potential with this book. It is a good coming of age story and I saw some twist and turns. I was reading to see what was going to happen next. I enjoyed reading this story but just wish it flowed better.

A Stranger in Disguise: An Italian Murder Mystery (A Commissario Scala Mystery in Rome)A Stranger in Disguise: An Italian Murder Mystery by P. J. Mann
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a gripping crime mystery story full of suspense, which had me hooked from start to finish. Detective Maurizio Scala is in Rome, Italy, where he has a case to solve, a member of a foreign acting company has been brutally murdered. The Detective believes the last person to see the victim is a suspect, but then later fears he has a killer on his hands when she’s found by the river dead. As Detective Scala investigates he discovers that the apparent simple life of the victim is actually very complex. As more secrets emerge the Detective must stop the killer before they strike again. A thrilling whodunit, this is actually book four in a series, but I easily read it as a standalone story, however having been introduced to the Detective, I’m intrigued to read the rest of the series. The characters and setting came alive through the detailed descriptive narrative, and the plot twists kept me guessing as to the outcome of the story. An entertaining and engaging read, which I recommend.

I found this story to be fascinating. A murder mystery that could suck you in. It is the fourth book of the series but you can still read it as a standalone. I will be going back to read the others. I don’t want to share much as I feel with will give away too much. I can tell you that this is so well done. The storyline is perfect for suspense and mystery. I found the characters had me guessing. Just right! I think you should give this book a chance and read it. You won’t be disappointed.

A Stranger in Disguise is the fourth book in the Inspector Scala Mystery series by P.J. Mann. I hadn’t read any of Ms. Mann’s books before, but I love a gripping read, so I was intrigued by what I would find here. What I discovered is a well-woven and suspenseful crime & investigation whodunit mystery- with murder, police procedure, drama, twists, secrets, and tension.
This mystery is set in Rome, adding an extra element of interest to the whole story. With the staging of a cursed play comes murder and intrigue. We join the investigation following our stubborn detective as he endeavours to get to the bottom of it all. But with the body count mounting the case becomes more complex. What happens makes for an engaging read.
I will definitely be going back to read the first three books, before continuing with the rest of the series.
Happy reading…

Thank you, P.J. Mann!

I truly loved this book! This features two strong characters who acted with integrity. It features the president of the United States who has just been widowed and in losing his wife he also lost his unborn child. He has a secret service agent who is assigned to protect him. She is developing feelings for him. However, she doesn’t know if the President feels the same way. There are still very valid threats against the president’s life and the more time they spend together the more neither of them cannot deny their feelings.
This book combines romance with suspense. I love how well it is written and how developed the characters are. I definitely recommend this book and I love that it combines genres!

Straight For the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery Book 3) by Winter Austin- Review by Stephanie Driskill

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #3)Straight for the Kill by Winter Austin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sheriff Elizabeth Benoit is recovering from emergency surgery and is at home trying to recoup but life does not stand still in a small town that is shrouded with secrets. As she sits at home, murder and kidnapping are taking place just like the one that happened 25 years ago to her best friend. The similarities are uncanny! Not only is she trying to solve the 25 year old case but now this new one as well. Secret calls, a camp in the woods, and the Good Ol’ Boys Club is not helping to make things any easier. Deputy detective Lila Dayne who is an outsider to the town is hitting brick walls with every turn and needs the help of the locals who don’t want to hash up old crimes or feelings. Prominent members of the small town begin to disappear and then Elizabeth’s sister has gone missing. Will they be able to find her in time or just her dead body at the end of the day? Packed with mystery and intrigue this is such a great book. Strong female leads and a bit of romance and sizzle add to the story that kept me on the edge of my seat! The setting is so like a small town and the locals behave just like those in my town hiding the truth to keep their own noses out of trouble! A definite must read!

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #3)Straight for the Kill by Winter Austin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Elizabeth Benoit’s best friend died of an accidental overdose 25 years ago. Elizabeth suspected that there might have been more to the case but chose to push those feelings aside and move forward. Lila Dayne is a Deputy working in the same department as Elizabeth Benoit who discovers the body of another young girl twenty five years later who has died under similar circumstances. Lila chooses to move forward with the case without involving Elizabeth but that does not go well. As Sheriff of the department not only is she Lila’s superior but it also becomes personal for Elizabeth because of the loss of her friend in a similar manner years prior.

As Lila digs deeper into the case she comes up with a list of suspects but nothing concrete. As Lila struggles to pinpoint a main suspect in the case important members of the community suddenly vanish. This leads Lila to believe that there is something bigger at work and that there is more to this case than she originally thought. Elizabeth has tried to stay away from the case due to the personal issues of it, but when her sister suddenly vanishes, she must do everything she can to find her. Elizabeth and Lila must team up to solve the case and bring the murderer to justice. Will they be able to find out in time before more people vanish?

This book kept me on the edge of my seat and was action packed out of the gate. Both Lila and Elizabeth are smart, strong, independent, feisty, kick-ass women who do not back down from a challenge. I found myself cheering them on and trying to crack the case along with them. A highly suspenseful, action packed read!

Once again, this author did an amazing work of art. This book had me on the edge of my seat form the start to the finish. I still have not read the first book but did read the second one before this one and can firmly say that these books can be read by themselves, but I will for sure be going back and reading book one. The suspense in this book was just as intense as the other reads. I highly enjoyed this. The love you can tell that Elizabeth had for her friend you can tell was very real. And the way she goes about it to find out what happened is truly something amazing. But these two women are an amazing example for women helping women and supporting each other to figure this all out. I highly recommend these books if you love crime, suspense, and mystery.

Hush, My Darling (Benoit and Dayne Mystery Book 2) by Winter Austin – Review by Tara Johnson Barnes

Hush, My Darling (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #2)Hush, My Darling by Winter Austin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lila Dayne is a Deputy with Eckhardt County who survived an attack on her life by a serial killer. Two years later she is haunted by the memories of that vicious attack. Still running from that night and trying to overcome her fears she is desperate for a fresh start. Even after moving to a small part of southeast Iowa, Lila is unable to shake her fears of constantly being watched.

Elizabeth Benoit is the new Sheriff of the department in Eckhardt County where Lila is now working as a Deputy. Elizabeth is quickly thrown from her task of stopping corruption into the solving of murder when dead bodies suddenly start to appear. The murders are freakishly similar to those of a serial killer who left bodies along the I-80. When one of the bodies portrays a sinister message directed at a member of the department it sets off a chain of events that has one member spiral out of control.

I loved this book and found myself really invested in Lila and her story. I could feel her fear and experienced the terror that went along with her as she fought through the things that triggered her. As I read along and followed her on her journey I found myself trying to solve the mystery of who the serial killer was and why they were after Lila. I was compelled to read through in one sitting to find out what was going to become of Lila and solve the mystery along with Lila and Elizabeth. I was on pins and needles as the story unfolded. This book is full of action, suspense, mystery, and intrigue. I highly recommend!

The Exchange: A NovelThe Exchange: A Novel by Nadija Mujagic
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After graduation Sam leaves her small hometown behind her to move to LA and start a career in acting. Once in LA it is not as easy as Sam was hoping that it would be nor is life as she had expected. Her apartment is rundown, the neighborhood she lives in is rampant with crime, and her money is running out. Things start to look up for Sam when she lands a meeting with a talent agent, but her hopes are quickly dashed when the agent rejects her. With her hopes and dreams suddenly shattered Sam starts to look for a job to make ends meet. She finds a small coffee shop that hires her immediately and she eagerly accepts the job.

While at work an attractive man comes into the coffee shop and flirts with Sam who instantly becomes smitten with him. Cory promises her that he can help her with her acting career and takes her under his wing. He helps her out of her desperate situation and offers her a room in his house where she can feel safe. It does not take long before Sam realizes that something is not right with her living situation but with nowhere else to go, and no money, or job, she brushes off her uneasy feeling. When Sam becomes pregnant Cory offers a proposition that seems too good to be true. He can make all her acting dreams come true in exchange for her child.

Four years go by, and Sam is living a normal life and raising her child on her own. When her child suddenly goes missing without a trace Sam wonders if Cory has made good on the deal and taken her child. She is desperate to find her son, at any cost, but what will that cost be? To what lengths will Sam go to in order to save her child?

This book was a brilliant read and I instantly fell in love with the character of Sam. She was smart, determined, strong, and never gave up hope no matter how dire the situation became. She kept her wits about her when most others would have given up all hope and fallen into despair. Cory was superficially charming but something sinister lurked under the surface. This book took some twists and turns that I did not suspect coming and they caught me off-guard. To say that Sam was clever is an understatement. Wow, just wow! I will not spoil it; you will have to read it for yourself. Brilliantly written!

Samantha the main character is a struggling actress that is looking for her big break. However, as is the world, she is in need of money which then leads to title of this book ‘The Exchange’. The ending was a bit of a twist, and worth the read!

Sam is a high school graduate leaving for LA to pursue her big dreams of becoming an actress, while also leaving behind her past. She meets with an agent the day after her arrival, but after multiple prospects fall through, she is becoming desperate. That’s when she meets Corey, who offers her an out and a road to success, as long as she agrees to the terms – the ones regarding her unwanted baby boy. Years later, her son Jake goes missing one day at the pool.

Interesting, intriguing, suspenseful, haunting. Some things felt predictable even with all the buildup but the ending was surprising. Regardless, quick read that kept me turning the pages and finishing it in one sitting.

Wow! Hunter Divine used to be a US Marshall and has since moved to having his own team of investigators. In book 2, Hunter and his crew head to Reno, Nevada and end up working an undercover case to find the blackmailer of Megan Getz, Hollywood royalty that got caught up in after a little indiscretion – at least according to her.

What they come to find out is that Megan is very overtly pursuing indiscretions all over town and doesn’t seem to have learned anything from the blackmail case that has even brought Hunter and his crew here. She tries over and over to seduce Hunter, who wants nothing to do with it.

In what he expected to be an easy case, they find all the members of the dark underbelly of the city and have targets on their backs. Bodies start showing up and Hunter and his team find themselves set up to take the fall. While at moments I really had trouble liking Hunter, there are several situations that give me hope for him, yet. Great scenery, wonderfully fleshed out characters and backstories a lot of grit and suspense and one hell of an ending to this book!

His Protector by Sara Vinduska is an enticing romantic suspense that had all the ingredients to keep me engrossed in the story the whole way through. It is the first book that I have read by this author, but after enjoying being between these covers, it certainly won’t be the last.
It is an action-packed romantic suspense with plenty of danger, chemistry, emotion, steam, and more. The characters are well-developed and interesting individuals with their own personalities quirks and flaws. It was easy to connect with them and I found myself fully invested in them and the outcome of their story.
We have the widowed president of the United States, and a sexy Secret Service agent who will do everything to protect him in the line of duty. With an Assassination plot that places him in extreme danger she will need to fight her growing feelings if she is going to keep him alive. Things are about to get tense…
Looking forward to exploring more of Ms. Vinduska’s work.

Trigger Warnings*** not exactly sure how to categorize these warnings.

This was a very dark read, I love psychological thrillers but this one had me deeply feeling all the emotions in this novel. Mujagic’s talent far surpassed my expectations.
I could not put this down, as much as I thought I had figured out all the twists and turns there was a new one ahead. Throughout the novel I had so many questions in which all were answered as I continued to read.

Certainly a read for psychological thriller lovers.

A Stranger in Disguise is set in the beautiful city of Rome, Italy. P.J. is a new author to me and I was pleasantly surprised. It is also the fourth book in the Inspector Scala Mystery series. Unfortunately I was not aware this is the fourth book but I didn’t feel like I had missed anything. I will however be going back to start at the beginning because I like a good thrilling mystery.
Detective Maurizio Scala is once again on the case. He discovers there is more to the murder victim than he first realised. But to make matters worse this case is in a theatre and one of his least favourite places.
A Stranger in Disguise is an intriguing story that is gripping and has twists that will surprise you. I am not going to share any more so if you like a good mystery then grab a copy.

Sara Vinduska is a new author to me and I was excited to see what she brings to the table. I must say I was pleasantly surprised and really liked this story. His Protector is a romantic suspense tale. The story is unique and original which is refreshing.
I love that there is a swap in the protector roles. The book is well-written and has characters that are well developed, with strengths and weaknesses that are believable.
Her job is to protect the number one man. But can she do her job and find the enemy before he takes him out.
He is still grieving but he can’t deny his attraction. Just because she is my protector doesn’t mean he won’t protect her.
There is a real slow burn that you just want them to give in and get to it. Ahhhh! It is a good story that is suspenseful, has some humour, is action packed and interesting.
If you are a fan of romantic suspense, you will enjoy this book. I look forward to reading more of Sara’s work.

This is the fourth book in the Inspector Scala Mystery Series. Don’t let that deter your from reading this book, because I have not read any of the others and I completely understood what was happening. But I will definitely be going back to read the others because I enjoyed this one so much!
This book features an acting company that is in a foreign land and is performing MacBeth. Everyone knows this play is known to be cursed. The actors definitely are trying to shake it off as rumors but weird things start happening. Then a cast member ends up dead. This is where Inspector Scala shows up. What he discovers is that the victim is not necessarily a simple actor, her life is far more complicated than anyone ever thought.
I truly enjoyed the twists and turns that were in this book. It kept me guessing for sure! I definitely recommend this great mystery.

I’m a big fan of thrillers- and psychological ones could be my favorite. This one was pretty great. The idea behind this story isn’t a new one- kinda reminded me of the story of Rumpelstiltskin (if that’s how you spell it). But i love that it’s a modern day telling and I ended up really into the storyline. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it at first- but I ended up really enjoying it! I saw a reviewer describe it as bizarre and I think that’s the perfect word to sum up this book. Bizarre isn’t bad- it just means the book is different!! This was my first read by the author- and I’m eager to try more. This was a solid 4 stars for me!

I know I, like most people, love a good mystery that gets its hooks in you and doesn’t let you go until the last question has been answered, the last puzzle pieces have been put in the right places, and the mystery has been solved! The problem is that most of them that claim that don’t deliver. When I first picked up this book it was in the middle of a series, I had never heard of this author, and while it sounded good I didn’t hold out much hope. I am so glad in this instance to have been wrong as I didn’t have any trouble getting into this book and blowing through to the end, this book definitely delivered and I really enjoyed it. Like most books of its kind you have some familiar characters and things will make the most sense if the books are read in order but they can also be read as a standalone. You should give it a read.
