The Monster That Ate My Mommy by Jessica Aiken-Hall – Review by Tausha Treadway

The Monster That Ate My MommyThe Monster That Ate My Mommy by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Monster That Ate My Mommy by Jessica Aiken-Hall. This book is WOW! Its the emotional memoir of the author who has endured different types of trauma all thru her life. Her mother had sever mental issues and tried to cure them with drinking and drugs therefore she couldn’t keep her daughter in a stable home so her maternal grandmother picked up the slack. She loved her Gram dearly. Her mom and dad were back and forth together and not together. When her dad threatened to kill them all after her mom cheated on him they split again. One of her mom’s boyfriends molested her and her dad was killed in a construction accident. Gram was always the one to fall back on after teenage problems and once she became an adult. As an adult she got involved with a very abusive man and lived in that for years. This book will rip your heart out and make you wonder how some people survive things like this. Read this book with the knowledge it could have some triggers for people who have survived similar situations! Very good emotional read!

Manifested Dreams by Dr. Yvonne Johnson – Review by Tausha Treadway

Manifested DreamsManifested Dreams by Yvonne Johnson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Manifested Dreams by Dr. Yvonne Johnson. I have never read anything by this author but this was a very interesting read. It’s a very emotional read and it will keep you turning pages until you are done. Its written almost in a journal form but it really keeps your interest. Its basically the story of a family’s journey from slavery to freedom and more. Its during the Post Civil War, Martin Luther King and even to seeing Obama become the 1st African American President. It tells of how the South even to this day still has racism, not nearly as bad but it is still there. The story also tells us that it isn’t just in the South that there is racism but everywhere in all walks of life! This is a super short read but it holds a lot of information and its very emotional as well. Do yourself a favor and read this awesome book.

Travels Through Aqua, Green, and Blue: A MemoirTravels Through Aqua, Green, and Blue: A Memoir by Mary E. Gregory
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Travels Through Aqua, Green, and Blue: A Memoir by Mary E. Gregory. This is such a great read. Its actually a memoir and I don’t usually enjoy many memoir’s but this one was amazing. Its the story of Mary a young girl who at the height of the Aids pandemic her father a Baptist preacher came out as gay. Her whole family’s world was shook and her mom was so blindsided that she took the kids and traveled all over the US. Mary was also born with a Cleft Palate so she was teased always as a kid by kids and teachers alike. When her family settles in New York her mom’s mental health is at an all time low. At all times the family was poor no matter where they landed and the kids were raising themselves basically because of their mom’s mental health and their dad’s lifestyle. This is such an emotional, sad, read about a family that is probably more prevalent than not. Do yourself a favor and read it today!
