The Confectioner’s Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles #1) by Claire Luana – Review by Moriah Venable

The Confectioner's Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles, #1)The Confectioner’s Guild by Claire Luana
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Confectioner’s Guild is the first novel in the Confectioner Chronicles by Claire Luana. This is my third novel by this author.

Wren is a confectioner apprentices working in a confection shop. When a mysterious man shows up asking questions about her cupcakes, she is unsure of who he is or what she wants. Reluctantly she goes with him to meet the GuildMaster and thrown in a world she never knew existed and discovers an ability she never knew she processed.

But when the Guild Master is poisoned after eating of her cupcakes, she only has a limited time to prove her innocence and find out who really framed her before the king’s inquisitor arrives.

I’ve read a few books by this author and must admit this is my favorite so far.

While the beginning was confusing, I was interested in what was going on. I also love Wren’s character. She was funny and it was great seeing her passion for baking especially all the love and care she puts into the frosting of her cupcakes.

I fell in love with the cover and did not quite understand the title until I started reading the book. With a interesting concept, fun characters and world about magic, I highly recommend this book. I look forward to reading the next books in the series.

The Confectioner's Exile: The Confectioner Chronicles Prequel NovellaThe Confectioner’s Exile: The Confectioner Chronicles Prequel Novella by Claire Luana
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Confectioner’s Exile is a speedy read. It’s short and sweet and captures who Hale was before he met Wren and got swept up in a murder mystery. As fun as Hale is as a character, it’s hard to see him carrying his own novel. Much of his story is already told in The Confectioner’s Guild. It’s nice to meet his family and see the familial dynamics unfold in the story throughout the pages (honestly, his mother is pretty amazing) but there’s not much else to it.

Hale is a great character, of that there is no doubt, but the story is lacking something that the series lacks: a unique quality to it. This story is far too familiar, to see a rich spoiled kid ripped from everything he knows, seeking refuge in a foreign land. There’s a lot of adventure, but it’s all very rushed and condensed. It is a novella; it is supposed to be short, but, again, Hale isn’t a strong enough character to carry on his own story leaving the energy somewhere else. There are some great characters that pop up, particularly Griff whose personality will surely catch the reader off guard, and we can only hope to see more of Griff, but other characters are short lived.

The story would have done better if it were just a little longer and if Hale’s mother was shown off more. She’s a fantastic character who is there in the beginning and the end, but missing for much of the middle of the novel. To see their relationship grow would have helped the story flourish just a little more and create an extra level of depth considering what readers know happens to her in the Guild. But overall, the story is entertaining, but Hale, he’s just Hale, his life verges a little on cliché, but he’s still fun to read, that is for sure.

The Confectioner’s Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles, #1) by Claire Luana – Review by Erin Wolf

The Confectioner's Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles, #1)The Confectioner’s Guild by Claire Luana
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I give The Confectioner’s Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles Book 1) by Claire Luana, 5 stars.

Wren is an orphan, growing up the hard way. She gets by, but barely. She lives for her job in the bakery, making cupcakes and other sweet treats. After her cupcakes get the attention on the Confectioner’s Guild, she is whisked away to what seems like a much better life. It all seems to good to be true. And just maybe it is. No sooner does a better life seem to be within her grasp, than it looks like it will be pulled away just as quickly. She is accused of murder. All because of her cupcakes. Can she find out who did it, or is she doomed? Will she ever have a better life?

This is a young adult book set in a fantastic magical world. It put me in mind of a place JK Rowling would have created. It is something completely new to me and I absolutely loved it. The world is fascinating and the characters are great. Not only is Wren a very down to earth main character, the others in this book are just as great. There are so many that I would love to know more about. Besides the magic in it, there is the suspense of figuring out just who committed the murder and why. You will be kept guessing as you puzzle through the clues.

An overall outstanding book, I highly recommend this book to young adults and older.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well this was another delightful and fun addition to The Confectioner Chronicles. This is actually a prequel novella, so reads like one and is a quick light read. I devoured it in one short sitting. The first book, ‘The Confectioner’s Guild’, which I ADORED, featured our main character, Hale in this one.
I really enjoyed the fact that we got the backstory of him. Hale has it all, literally. Good looks, riches, the family hierarchy. However, it isn’t all it seems under the surface. Especially when something happens and it is all ripped away from him. Now he is on the run and forced to fend for himself. He has never had to do this before, so imagine the difficulty and the story lines this makes for. Can he survive on his own? I am dying to get my hands on the next book, ‘The Confectioner’s Truth.’ I will just be over her salivating… Thanks for another great read Claire Luana!

Enchanted & cloyingly sweet! I absolutely loved every second I spent with Wren! Claire Luana was a completely new author to me, but I can assure you this will soon be remedied. I have become enthralled with the magical writing skills that she possesses. First, I must start with this amazing cover. I was drawn in with its beautiful colors and enchanting design. Who wouldn’t want to find out what lays behind that? Given I hadn’t known the author previously, I simply went in blind, and wasn’t I pleasantly pleased!

Do not be fooled however. This isn’t so sweet and wholesome as it looks. Hence my cloyingly description. Wren is the very best of bakers. She enjoys what she does and it comes out in her baking. She loves being in her little corner of the world making her masterpieces. Unfortunately, when the Guildmaster calls you must oblige. So oblige she does. This is where things go a bit awry. As mentioned in the teaser his is poisoned and she is to blame! Why would simple and sweet Wren poison the Guildmaster!?

Well this has left her in a tortuous bind. She has merely ONE month to collect her proof that she did not commit the crime she has been accused of or else… To make matters worse she has no alliances and no family now when she needs them the most. What will she do? The journey she will take will be sure to keep you engaged and entertained well beyond your bedtime. I know it did for me. I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on the next book, ‘The Confectioner’s Exile.’ Thanks so much for such a fantastic read Claire Luana!

The Confectioner's Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles, #1)The Confectioner’s Guild by Claire Luana
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Who doesn’t love a good novel about deserts? Honestly, this book made me crave some delicious pastries that were indeed worth dying for I’m sure, especially if it gave me some good luck. Who doesn’t love a little luck in life?

The Confectioners Guild is a delightfully yummy novel that is so unique in the way it combines delectable deserts and magic. It’s great to see how intricate desert making is but what’s also unique about this novel is how seriously this is taken. There is so much discipline that goes into confections that to see it brought to life in this novel is delightful. The fact that there is a guild dedicated strictly to overseeing it makes it not only fun but impressive as well.

Following Wren, a girl who was once a street urchin turned confectioner; the novel unfolds as much to the reader as it does for her. There are so many politics and intricacies that, in a way, mirrors that of dessert making. That’s part of what makes this novel so riveting. The fact that it works to this end, to keep true to its essence as a story while it builds layers upon layers of mystery, humor, and romance into the storytelling.

Now, Wren was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, used as a scapegoat, her magical cupcake the culprit for murder. So really, on some level, this story is a murder-mystery type story, following Wren as she tries to unravel the politics of the game she has unwittingly entered. There are so many culprits and a strong sense of misdirection that keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. It makes for an intense read, a riveting one because while the story is unique, the idea thrill of unraveling this mystery alongside the reader makes for an enthralling read.

So, the story is excellent, of that, there is no doubt, but the characters themselves are also fantastic. Wren starts as quite ordinary, but as the story unfolds, her strengths, her spunk, everything about her begins to shine and flourish. Wren flourishes and grows alongside the story, and the way she develops makes her captivating. She goes from being a girl scared of her own shadow to a woman who can face death with her head held eye, unwilling to give up.

Overall, it’s a strong fun story that will surely leave the reader eager (and hesitant) for a cupcake.

I give The Confectioner’s Exile: The Confectioner Chronicles Prequel Novella by Claire Luana, 4 stars.

Hale is a Member of a prominent family and has everything he could want – money, good looks, an easy life. His life isn’t perfect, but he quite likes it. But all of that is taken away in an instant. Events happen that leave him on the run with his family. Surviving and fending for himself is something has never had to do before. Part of him enjoys the adventure, but another part of him misses the easy life he had. Will he survive? What about his family? What will they do when they finally make it to safety?

I have read this author before, but this is the first book in the series that I have read. It was wonderful. I do not know yet what role Hale holds in the future books, but this novella tells his story well. It is quite interesting to see just how much Hale transforms. He was an arrogant, easy going man who loved the good life. But he is forced to change. The story itself pulls you in too. As this author does so well, it does not take too long for the action to start and does not relent until the end.

This is a young adult fantasy book, but really any age above YA would enjoy it. I highly recommend it.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Claire Luana did it again with The Confectioner Chronicles. She has created a world within that has food apart of the magic. Ms. Luana has a tendency to write her characters with the most love or hate with in her story. She likes to teach little lessons with in her book. I think that is why I am a follower of Ms. Luana. In this story she takes an upper class son Hale and makes him a lower class citizen, which to me says anything can happen and you need to be ready for it. Wren, who bakes desserts with luck inside it, finds herself without luck as she is accused of murder. There is no time for Wren to try solving this on her own. Throughout this story it is really fast paced and one needs to pay attention behind every twist and turn because there are clues and you do not want to miss them. The underlying theme I felt as a part of this story is trust and all the making of good desserts. I would love to find a bake shoppe that has magical desserts to help get out of situations that may be happening in my world. I would recommend reading this series as it is only going to get better.

The Confectioner’s Chronicles is a Young Adult genre series. However there are many YA series that as an adult I can say that this is one of my favorite genres. This particular book, The Confectioner’s Exile, is the prequel to The Confectioner’s Chronicles. Claire Luana did an amazing job setting up the character Hale. From upper class family, he did not have a want or a need for anything, but all of that changed. He went from upper class to lower class. He had to do what the common folk did for anything. He did not have good luck anymore either. He is adapting to his new role but for how long. I cannot wait to see what Claire Luana has instore for Hale.

The Confectioner’s Exile: The Confectioner Chronicles Prequel Novella By Claire Luana. This novella may be short but the author knows all the right ways to pack a punch even in fewer pages. Here we get some back story on Hale before he was with the Confectioner’s Guild. You see him grow after his perfect life comes crashing down. This novella is fast paced and filled with action. I wasn’t immediately drawn in but soon found my hook and then I couldn’t put it down so definitely give it a chance. The author is amazing with details and brings the story alive no matter how many pages it has. I’m excited to read more from this author. I’m giving this novella a four star review and recommend it.

The Confectioners Exile by Claire Luana is the prequel book in her The Confectioners Chronicles series.
In this novella we get to see more into Hale’s backstory and the journey he went on before joining The Confectioners Guild. Although this book can be read as a stand-alone – it is a prequel after all – for me I felt that it was better to have read it in he order intended. It helped to give a better understanding of the overall story.
I absolutely loved this book. I felt it added value to the series and was such an enjoyable read. Novellas aren’t usually my favourite kind of books and yet with this one it didn’t feel rushed or like anything was missing. The author successfully takes you on a journey separate to the main series while also adding to the main story. A great read and a series I would truly recommend.

The Confectioner’s Exile is the prequel to The Confectioner’s Chronicles (Book #0.5) by Claire Luana. This is a novella length story, which made it a very quick and easy read. Though it may be short in length, it’s definitely not lacking in content, as it swept me up on an adventure to discover Hale Firena’s story and how he came to be where he is now. I love him in The Confectioner’s Chronicles, so I was intrigued to know more. And what a story he has, it was far more complex than I imagined, and he has definitely been through a lot and had to grow and evolve along the way.
I really liked the story and thought it was a great way to set up the rest of the series. There was a bit of a slow start, but things picked up pretty quickly and the story took off.
A great addition to the series. Can’t wait for Book #2!

Thank you, Ms. Luana!

This is the first book I have read by this author and it won’t be my last. I really enjoyed reading this prequel, I am going to read book 1 because I want to know where this story goes. In the beginning of this story Hale is a rich spoiled playboy living a pretty good life. One day that all changes for him and his family and they end up on the run with nothing and trying to survive. In the beginning of this story I really didn’t like Hale but I I grew to really like him especially watching him change and become a better man, I found myself rooting for him. This story drew me in right away and kept me entertained throughout especially with all the action. There are some twists and turns and moments of anger and sadness, all the things for me that make a good book. I recommend this book.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Confectioner’s Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles Book 1) by Claire Luana is a book that I “one-clicked” as soon as I saw the pre-order button. I very much enjoy this author’s stories and was excited to read this.

The world building in this story was fascinating. There is a very distinct class structure and it was interesting to see what roles people played. This is a story of magic and sweet treats (seriously, I NEEDED cupcakes by the time I finished reading it). It’s the story of a “lost girl” finding her tribe. There is murder and mystery and new crushes. Besties and trusted friends and people who want to help while still others who do not. If this wasn’t YA, I think it could almost be classified as a “cozy mystery”. There is definitely a youthful innocence to some of the characters and a mean twist to others. This story reminded me of a fairy tale with a twist.

For some reason, I read Wren (the main protagonist) with Shirley Temple’s accent and her friend Olivia as the best friend/side-kick in The Little Princess (because this is a YA book, the likelihood that anyone is going to get that reference…). This is one of those books that I would recommend to my younger cousins as a series starter.

The story flowed well, was easy to read and kept me interested from beginning to end. After the series is over, I will absolutely be going back to read again.

5/5 stars

The Confectioner’s Guild is not my first experience with Claire Luana’s writing, I’ve read some of another series written by her and despite not being a true fantasy reader, I loved it. This series is different than the one I’ve read by the author in the past, but when I read the synopsis for the first book in The Confectioner Chronicles series I had high hopes, and I will admit I wasn’t disappointed in this unique, fast paced story.
The story kicks off pretty quickly, ramping up the intensity right out of the gate which I really enjoyed. So often the first book in the series serves as a means of laying a foundation as well as providing a story, this didn’t feel drawn out it was action packed and intriguing from the very start.
The Confectioner’s Guild left me wondering why I don’t read more YA novels. This truly has a little bit of everything, twists, turns, mystery, romance but nothing over the top. I loved the imagery and felt like I was transported to another world and Wren is a strong, likable character despite her difficult past. I’d give this book 5 stars all around, from the cover art to the words between the pages. I am looking forward to following The Confectioner Chronicles.

The Confectioner’s Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles #1) by Claire Luana was a fast pace, unique read that had me hooked from the first cupcake till the last.

My first read by this author, I went in with a open mind, as I love these types of weird quirky books. What a fun read, it was everything I was hoping it would be and more. Claire Luana open this book running and quickly the plot is under way, and we are just as shocked, confused and bewildered as poor Wren. That type of opening can be tricky, but the with the author’s smooth, detailed writing, it worked beyond belief.

As for Wren our MC, I liked her from the start. Right away she gives you some of her sad backstory, her life but still left something hidden, that you don’t get to know until later. She has a good head on her shoulders and it helped her throughout this adventure. You can see her change as the story goes on, she get less skittish and, gains confidence lacked before being snached away.

As for the overall plot and mystery, I will say I had that figured out pretty fast, but it didn’t take away form the funnes that it this read. As I said the writing is solid, detail and a treat to the eyes. But I will say though I had the main players figured out, I didn’t see all it coming. That added that extra something special, that made this story all the more wickedly good.

Overall this book is a must read, so please take my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval, that this book will hook you, if not for the adventure, then it will be the cupcakes.

Happy Reading

Sometimes series are odd. The series is written and then a “prequel” is added at the beginning to better explain a character or characters. That’s what this prequel is. It’s the explanation of what makes Hale, Hale. I would suggest reading the series first and going back to this story.

It’s a quick and easy read with lots of drama, conflict and emotions. The writing is visually appealing and allows the reader to visualize what is going on. While it’s listed as a novella, it packs a lot of punch.

This is not a new to me author and I absolutely recommend their stories.

The Confectioner’s Guild is the first book in The Confectioner’s Chronicles by Claire Luana. The Moonburner Cycle is one of my favourite fantasy series ever, so when I discovered that Ms. Luana was releasing a new series, I could not wait for it to be available. I began devouring it within minutes of it hitting my Kindle. Even though the premise is quite different from the Moonburner books, I still had really high expectations and I am really excited to say that Ms. Luana certainly delivered on all the promise that the synopsis held. I was spellbound right from the beginning and loved every minute of this interesting, intriguing and slightly quirky read. Ok, I admit that Ms. Luana pretty much had me sold just from the premise alone. I mean, what’s not to love about a YA fantasy mystery??? There were sweet treats, murder, mystery, suspense, magic, danger, action, adventure, friendship, self-discovery, hidden agendas, quirky characters, surprises, and twists. Oh yeah, I was completely hooked!!!!
As with the Moonburner series, Ms Luana has once again created a unique and wonderful world in which to set her story. Ms. Luana’s imagination seems to know no bounds as she brings so many creative and unique elements to her storyline. It’s a wonderfully written story full of visual texture, wonderful descriptions and intricate details. The story is complex- with many layers, all beautifully interwoven and stitched together quite seamlessly to produce this delightful read.
The characters are unique, interesting, well thought out and fully developed. They were so enchanting; the cast of characters added an extra element of appeal to the whole story.
This is definitely a story I won’t forget any time soon and I can’t wait for the rest of the series and have already pre-ordered them in advance!

Thank you Ms. Luana!

The Confectioners Guild by Claire Luana is the first book in The Confectioner Chronicles. This book is a great example of a YA fantasy novel and is one I would highly recommend.
Wren loved to bake. And everyone was always receptive of what she made. However Wren never expected to find out that could be because they are magic. From the moment she finds out though she is thrust into a whole new world
And not only does she find out about the magic she is also accused of murder by magic!
Wren sets out to find out who the real culprit is and clear her name – quickly before she is framed for a murder she didn’t commit.

I have read books before by this author and always really enjoyed them but this book has to be my favourite so far. It is such a unique idea that really appealed to me. I loved Wren’s character. I was sucked into her journey immediately and could not stop reading about her adventures. This is a brilliant start to a new series.

The story The Confectioner’s Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles Book 1) by Claire Luana is a YA/fantasy suspense book. It is a story that draws you in from the very beginning and I found myself not wanting to put it down until I had read the last page. It has mystery, suspense, and at times had me turning pages to find out what happens next. You read about some sweet confections being made that made me hungry for the sugary treats. I loved reading about Wren. She is a young girl whose past has a sad note to it. She is someone who knows that she is not the one who murdered the head of the Confectioner’s Guild however now has to fight uphill to prove her innocence. She must navigate her way through the mountain of evidence that seems to be overwhelming at times. She has an ally that vouches for her and others who believe that she is innocent as well. I enjoyed reading about the interactions with the friends that Wren makes. There are also those whose motives are suspicious and you wonder whose side they are on. This story has some twists that I didn’t see coming and revelations that had me with my mouth open. A bit of romance is added to the mix in this book as well. Will Wren and her friends find the evidence that proves her to be not guilty of murder? Read this story to find out. This is a wonderfully written story that I would recommend reading. It is the first book in a series and I look forward to reading the next one.

The Confectioner's Guild (The Confectioner Chronicles Book 1)The Confectioner’s Guild by Claire Luana
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a Young Adult book that is a new series for this author. It has magic and the twists and turns that go along with that and left me turning page after page until I finished it. Wren is a confectionist who makes cupcakes that has no idea the powerful they are. When that power gets her into some trouble she meets an inspector who tries to help her. Will she manage to figure out her powers to save her life? Loved the characters! I highly recommend this book!
