My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Pharaoh’s Forgery: Karina Goes on Vacation (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 4) by Ellen Butler is another superb suspense/mystery and a wonderful addition to this series. I can’t get enough of Karina and the situations she inadvertently finds herself in (reminds me of myself). In typical Karina fashion a simple fun and relaxing holiday turns out to be anything but and she soon finds frenemies coming out the woodwork. Humour, great locations, great characters and lots of suspense make for an unpredictable and thrilling ride.

Butler continues to up the ante with each Karina Cardinal mystery. And I believe this has been my favorite to date. Slammed full of intrigue and mystery, I simply couldn’t put this book done until I finished the last page. I love the way Butler develops each story and the detail each book contains. Each work is complete and can stand on its own easily. However for the character development and certain histories, you best appreciate the storyline when taken in series total. Loved this book and seriously hope another will be in my hands soon!

If you like a good mystery with plenty of meat to sink your teeth into, you will love this book. The author does a fantastic job setting up the story and then helping fill in the blanks in a very thoughtful way. I appreciated how she developed the storyline and allowed the character to become a complete tangible person. I kept reading wanting to find out what exactly happened and why. It really was just extremely well written. I hope to read more from this author soon.

I’ve been reading (and enjoying) a lot of books outside of my normal genre as of late. This was a great read and a bit more of what I gravitate toward.
This was my first book I have read by this author and much to my pleasant surprise, a first in a series.
This is one of those books that has characters that you find yourself growing attached to. I found myself intrigued from start to finish as a Dead Man Speaks has elements of a good mystery/thriller. The idea of the victim taking part in solving his own murder is fantastic to me! While there is an obvious paranormal element to the story, I never felt like the author was reaching or that the twists and turns were over the top. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and look forward to reading more by Lisa Jones Gentry.

A DEAD MAN SPEAKS (A CLIVE JANUARY MYSTERY BOOK 1) by LISA JONES GENTRY – Review by Francis O’Sullivan

A Dead Man Speaks (A Clive January Mystery Book 1)A Dead Man Speaks by Lisa Jones Gentry
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Dead Man Speaks is the first book in Lisa Jones Gentry’s Clive January Mystery series. The premise of the book is that the deceased Mr January can’t rest until his murder is solved and is able to communicate with Detective Bob Greene to help him. Which should really make the case easier for Greene except that what he gets from January are a series of powerful memories from throughout his life which send him chasing up all kinds of leads which may or may not have anything to do with January’s death.
The story takes a while to get going. For the first twelve chapters it feels like January’s life is flashing slowly before his eyes. This gives us a fair bit of backstory which is useful later on, but I think interspersing this with aspects of the murder investigation would have given the story a more momentum. It is worth persevering, though, as it is an interesting story and the pace and tension do pick up later in the book.
Detective Greene is a complicated character. He testified against a partner who murdered a black teenager but did nothing in the moment to stop his partner. This means that pretty much everybody dislikes him, and his apparently confused morals make it hard for the reader to warm to him. He is persistent, though, and determined to find justice for January.
For me, this is a four-star book. It requires a fair bit of attention and patience but rewards you with an intriguing, tangled mystery with plenty of twists and surprises. I’d recommend it to mystery fans who are interested in ghosts and the paranormal. I’m looking forward to reading the sequel!

I have really enjoyed this series so I was looking forward to this fifth instalment and I wasn’t disappointed at all. I really like Ms Hamilton’s writing, I find it really engaging and I have definitely become invested in the characters after so many books! Although there is quite a lot going on in the story I never once felt lost or confused about what was going on, the authors writing was smooth and seamless. There are some great twists and turns that had me guessing what was happening and would Madeline and Mike being able to solve these cases!
I am very excited for the next book in the series! I can’t wait to see what awaits these two characters!

Madeline Dawkins and her husband Mike Delaney are at it again! They each have a case to solve for their PI business, and even one that hits close to home for Mike. As always, the characters and the story brings you right into it. Madeline and Mike grow stronger together and have each other’s backs, plus the way they solve the crimes sure get you interested in the cases and their life. This is the 5th book in the series – I’ve read them all and I can say they get better in each installment because of the back story. Don’t get me wrong, they can definitely be read as a stand alone book. Just don’t be surprised if you pick up the earlier books once you’ve finished this one.

This series gets better with every story. This is not my first book and it will not be my last book. This book is a fast pace adventure. There are twists and turns around every page turned. It is well written and the plotline is an adventure. Karina finds herself going to Mexico to drop off a package. It was supposed to be a vacation, but it turns into chaos. Karina always has mishaps with the plans she lays down. This book brings in some Egyptian history, which makes this package even more interesting. You will have to read to see what happens to Karina in this adventure as she always has with everything she does.

Pharaoh's Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mystery Book 4)Pharaoh’s Forgery by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Pharaoh’s Forgery is book four in author Ellen Butler’s ‘Karina Cardinal Mysteries’ and this series just gets better and better. Our independently minded feisty heroine Karina Cardinal is having a short girls only holiday to Mexico to recover from her latest adventures. However when sister Jillian’s injury means she cannot travel, the trip looks like a no go until friend Rodrigo volunteers to go in Jillian’s place. Whilst boyfriend Mike Finnegan is working, Karina heads off to Cancun with fellow lobbyist Rodrigo. The pair look forward to some sun, sea, sand and plenty of margaritas. Having promised to handover a package to Mrs. Thundermuffin in Mexico, Karina then worries about what is inside the package especially as Mrs T, herself is being evasive. Concerned she may be carrying something illegal she takes a look to discover it’s an Egyptian death mask. Unluckily for Karina and Rodrigo the mask proves to be valuable and so attracts the attention of crooks, conmen, kidnappers, and murderers. With Karina’s life in danger, yet again, her and Rodrigo need friends in the right places to help them out of this situation and help them return home safely.
I love this series of books, as each story has mystery, drama and suspense and this novel was no different, the plot had plenty of action to keep me happily turning the pages and enough twists to keep me guessing until the end. I was hooked from page one and as usual was completely immersed in Karina’s adventures. Karina is a great lead character who brings the story together but the other characters, such as Mike and Rodrigo, are also fascinating in their own right and add to the overall storyline. I look forward to future Karina Cardinal novels.

I really have enjoyed the Karina Cardinal Mysteries books but this one has to have taken the cake and made my absolute favorite one so far. Even though this is the fourth book in the series, these could probably be read as standalones, you will be hooked after the first read though I can promise you that. This one is a wild ride and I really loved the small vacation setting that Butler took me to this time. She has a knack for building the world and scenery so well and vivid that I feel as if I am right there with the characters.

This time we found KC as she was about to go on a much needed vacay with her sister. Of course nothing goes to plan as usual and her sister breaks her leg and can no longer join her on the vacation to Cancun. Fate throws in at the last minute Rodrigo, a coworker and friend of KC’s, and the two embark on quite the adventure and mystery in Cancun. I love the intrigue and the building of suspense in this one and found myself reading well past my bedtime to finish this novel and figure out how things will work out for KC. I am so anxious to see what adventure we will get in the next book!

The Patience of KarmaThe Patience of Karma by Cynthia Hamilton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have yet to read a Madeline Dawkins Mystery that I did not absolutely adore. THE PATIENCE OF KARMA is no exception to the rule, and once again Hamilton has truly delivered the ultimate twisty and suspenseful mystery that will take you away on a wild ride as you try to figure it out along with Maddie and Mike. I have loved every book up until this one but I do think you could read them as standalones if you really wanted and still find them easy to digest and adore.

THE PATIENCE OF KARMA has a whole new mystery one with drama and twists and turns you will not see coming just as much as Maddie and Mike don’t. I loved the side characters and how well the story flowed. It was believable and intense in the suspense department and I couldn’t get through it fast enough. I will be so ready to get my hands on the sixth book, House of Deception!

Pharaoh’s Forgery is the fourth book in the Karina Cardinal Mystery series by Ellen Butler. WOW, this series just seems to get better with each new instalment- this is definitely one of my top two picks of the series, so far.
I love a riveting mystery- something Ms. Butler does incredibly well. I love that her stories always keep me wondering what will happen next- and expecting danger with every turn of the page. Her books are always full of suspense, drama, danger, intrigue, tension, action, and even a little adventure.
Her books are a definite ‘one-click’-no-questions-asked…. I don’t even have to read the burb because I just know I am going to love it. As expected, this story definitely didn’t disappoint.
Even though this is the fourth book in the series, it could be read as a standalone- without feeling like you are lost or missing anything. But having said that, I really do recommend reading the previous three books first, because not only would you be denying yourself some really great stories- there are some recurring characters that appear in each instalment, so having the character introductions/details, backstories, and other interesting information would really enhance your overall reading experience.
Karina Cardinal (K.C) has been through quite a lot recently and is in dire need of a vacation. She’s really looking forward to cocktails, blue skies, and the sunny beaches of Cancun- and having her sister with her for a girls get-away. But you know what they say about the best laid plans- as she discovers when her sister breaks a leg and has to cancel. Now it looks like K.C will be holidaying alone- until good friend and co-worker Rodrigo steps in to ensure she doesn’t have to cancel or go alone. But, if you have been following the series, you know that nothing is ever quite that simple and that K.C seems to attract trouble to her like a magnet- so, what should have been a simple favour for her elderly neighbour, turns quite dangerous- with K.C and Rodrigo caught in the middle. Their ‘adventures’ made for quite a gripping and engrossing read!
I can’t wait for more Karina Cardinal mysteries!

Thank you, Ms. Butler!

The Patience of Karma is the fifth intense instalment in the Madeline Dawkins series by the incredibly talented Cynthia Hamilton. I adore this series- and find myself excitedly awaiting the release of each new addition- anticipating what Maddie and Mike will encounter ‘this’ time. And with every book I wonder just how much Maddie and Mike can take, as Ms Hamilton tests them, thoroughly, each and every time.
Cynthia Hamilton definitely doesn’t disappoint with this book- delivering an edge of your seat mystery that had all the dramatic developments, emotive qualities, and surprising twists that I have come to expect from her creative mind. She definitely knows how to keep her audience clamouring for more- developing addictively clever stories with their own original webs of intrigue. I don’t think I will ever tire of reading one on her books- the bonus being that this series is one that you can happily go back and read over and over again.
Bring on Book #6, “House Of Deception”- I CAN NOT WAIT!!!!

This complex story was what I expected and not all at the same time. The author does a fine job weaving a layered story that is chock full of emotion and speculation. I expected to find a gripping story but wasn’t as prepared for the story to sit in, what I found to be, a prolonged sad place. This didn’t detract from the story, rather leant to that emotion’s authenticity. However it is something to be aware of if the reader struggles with that emotion themselves. An interesting read and one that left me pondering where the series might go next.

THE PATIENCE OF KARMA (A Madeline Dawkins Mystery #5) by Cynthia Hamilton. I love this series. It can be read as a standalone but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading them all. This is the story of Madeline Dawkins and Mike Delaney who own a PI service together and are also dating. This book has Mike and Madeline receiving 3 cases at one time. One being an older man wanting to find out if his young wife is cheating on him. Seems cut and dried right, but with Madeline nothing is ever cut and dried. The next case is for a missing man who is presumed dead but has been seen in a picture within the last little bit and he may be the key to save a young girl’s life. The next case is about Mike’s past and some choices he made years ago. Will Mike and Madeline solve all the cases and stay together in the process? Read The Patience of Karma to find out!

This was an awesome story. I love ghost stories, especially when there is a mystery around it. Lisa Jones Gentry did a great job writing this story. For me at least, there was no confusion about what was happening. The characters are fully developed and personable. The plot of the story is intriguing. Clive, who was well todo, got shot and killed. That is when the story begins. Clive was an investment banker. He wants to find his killer. That is when it becomes interesting. Clive teams up with Detective Bob to help solve a murder. There are feelings and obstacles that Clive needs to get done to be able to move on. I highly recommend this book to see what exactly happens to Clive and Detective Bob.

Logan McKenna has been through a lot over the course of the series- but this book plunges her back into peril- with her facing yet more danger as she tries to help her new neighbour and her young daughter.
This series does seem to get better with each new addition. Although I did have a few issues with this story- they didn’t detract too much from my enjoyment of the story.

I loved reading the book VANISHING DAY (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 4) by Valerie Davisson. It is a story that once I started, I was hooked. It is a book that includes mystery, suspense, and danger. The more stories that I read in this series, the more I grow to love the character of Logan. She is a woman who is intelligent, strong-willed, and once she is faced with a mystery is determined to find out the truth. This book has Logan’s neighbor attacked with her three-year-old daughter the only witness. Logan may hold a clue to that attack. Is the attacker going to now come after Logan? Logan’s neighbor is in the ICU. Will she recover? Read this book to find out what happens. This is a story that had me turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. The author writes with such detail that I feel like I am right there with the characters. Some of the additional characters in this book have been brought forward from the first three stories. Logan has a wonderful group of friends who care about her. Don’t miss out on a story that is exciting and entertaining. I highly recommend reading it.

This is the fourth book in this series. I have read all the books in this series and they just keep getting better and better. They bring action, suspense and mystery to a new level. This is a well developed story that has characters that bring the story alive. I was pulled into this story right from the beginning and was kept engaged to the end. It is a fast paced story that has twists and turns that kept me turning pages. The characters are connectable and supportive of each other. Logan is back in another investigation. This time she finds that her friend isn’t who she says she is. As her new neighbor clings to life in the hospital, Logan is trying to draw out the killer. The deeper she digs and the deeper she gets and she just may not find her way back out. You don’t want to miss Logan in another suspenseful investigation looking for a killer. Logan is one of my favorite characters. She is strong, determined and nothing gets in her way of finding what she wants. I highly suggest reading the previous books in this series to get to know Logan more. This is an entertaining story that I highly recommend.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Deadly Weapon is the 5th book in the Jake Wolfe series by Mark Nolan. I have read them all, but you don’t have to read them in order. The story definitely continues as far as Jake and Cody’s friendships but there is enough background information provided to enjoy, starting anywhere in the series. I like these books because they are a good suspense with a touch of mystery and humor. When I first started, I thought it was weird how Nolan writes about Cody’s feelings and thoughts, but now I’m used it it and it doesn’t phase me. This story hits a little too close to home, with COVID 19 happening right now. At the end of the book the author does say how he started this book long before the epidemic started. However, a lot of the details are close to the conspiracy theories out there. Over all, well written book and great addition to the series. Highly recommend it.

Devil’s Claw is the third book in Valerie Davisson’s Logan McKenna series as well as the third book I’ve raad by this author. While any of these books can be read as stand alone reads, I recommend reading in order. Not only does this allow for more character depth, the books really are worth it.
Valerie Davisson has a way of bringing real life issues to light while delivering a story that is filled with enough action and intrigue to keep you turning from first page to last. I truly look forward to more from this author… and more Logan McKenna. 4 out of 5 stars for sure!
