My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Danielle Jacks you’ve done it again. This was all kinds of hot! Loved Setter and Casey’s story and I was engaged from page 1. As usual the writing is on point, the characters relatable and the story steaming. Each character’s backstory is fleshed out as the story progresses and I really loved the dual POV. I highly recommend all of Danielle Jack’s books but just be warned – once you start you won’t be coming up for air until the book is finished.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Following Zoey’s emotional turmoil learning her family drama is quite exhilarating! She realizes what truly happened ten years ago when she got lost in the woods. Characters that you don’t like at first surprise you. This book is a wonderful YA read and needs to be given 5 stars!
It’s not a super-fast read but you won’t want to put it down.
I really enjoy when books switch POV during reading so you can get more than one characters inner dialogue.

I did not realize this was a spin off of the Blood Dagger books and now I can’t wait to read that series.

Mr. Nice Guy (Pierce Brothers Book 1) by Belinda Williams – Review by Kayla Kearney

Mr. Nice Guy (Pierce Brothers, #1)Mr. Nice Guy by Belinda Williams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mr. Nice Guy by Belinda Williams is the perfect beach read this summer! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a short read that can be finished in a short time. It was the first book that I have read by her and I plan to read the following books in the series.

Belinda has written a very relatable character in Chelsea, reminding me of how it felt to fall for a nice guy after dealing with so many bad guys in the past. Belinda also wrote an amazing character in Tom, making him easy for the reader to also grow attraction towards him as Chelsea develops her own feelings for the sweet and sensitive paramedic. The plot is captivating, with twists and turns in this not-so run-of-the-mill romance novel, that keeps the reader wondering if it will have a happy ending up until the very end of the novel.

Cadence
Helping my parent run Camp Riley was my number one priority. I didn’t have time for Fitz Quinn—no matter how potent his smile was. He was the spoiled son of a wealthy politician; a gorgeous troublemaker with a cocky attitude.
But the second he spoke to me, I knew I was in over my head.
My heart warned her, but of course I didn’t listen. There was something protective and good beneath the bad boy exterior that made my insides flutter. Before I knew it, I was falling hard and fast.
Fitz
I wasn’t prepared to meet a girl like Cadence.
She was shy and innocent—and nothing like the girls who usually flocked my doorstep.
How could I resist her mile-long blond hair and emerald eyes?
I knew he shouldn’t want her. My father already had other plans for me and a relationship with her could never go beyond the summer.
I thought our stolen kisses by the lake were only supposed to be a summer fling.
Falling for her shouldn’t have happened.
But it did.
Now the clock is counting down until I have to return to the hell that awaits me in Washington D.C.
As September drew closer, I wasn’t sure if I could survive the end of everything I’ve come to love.

The Arsonist’s Handbook: A Gripping Psychological Thriller by L.A. Detwiler certainly grabbed my attention from the very first page. Thrillers are definitely one of my go-to reading genres, and with such an intriguing blurb when this showed up on one of my recommended book lists, I certainly couldn’t pass it by.
Even though it is written in a slightly different style to what I am used to- the journal like writing really added to the overall atmosphere the story created. Throw in plenty of intensity, gripping details, unexpected twists and turns ensured that I was completely engrossed, not wanting to put it down until I had read every last word.
This has been a great introduction to L.A. Detwiler’s work, I can’t believe I hadn’t read any of her work before now- I have been missing out and that is something I plan to rectify right away. I can’t wait to explore her other books.
If you like a gripping read that makes you think, throws in unexpected twists and turns, and keeps you guessing- then this is definitely the book for you!
Happy reading!

Thank you, L.A. Detwiler!

The Arsonist’s Handbook: A Gripping Psychological Thriller by L.A. Detwiler was awesome and consuming. It was in depth, and took you on twists and turns throughout the book. This book triggered some things in my past for me but still kept me reading. When I mean consuming, I mean it isn’t a light read and it takes and pulls you into it. It has emotional ups and downs and is extremely well written. This book didn’t rush into anything, or dump a load of information or on a whimsical thought jump here and there, Detwiler knew what she was doing and was very methodical when she put her plot twist in the story and built up for each climax. I would suggest reading this and reading other books of hers without a doubt.

The Don (Her Three Immortals Book 1) by Hazel Storm

This is the first book I’ve read by the author. Hazel Storm has a new fan and reader. She knows how to write and I will be coming back for more.

Vanessa is not the normal person people think her to be. She seems to have caught the attention of three immortals. Grey, Aroz, and Raef. The quote I chose for Vanessa is: “Hm. Speaking of doing without, would you mind if I take a day off next week? I need to visit some specialists in the city about Piper.”

Grey is the top dog of the Underworld. Vanessa is something he wants. The only question is though is can he share. He’s not the only one wanting her. The quote I chose for Grey is: “How many boys did you say work for him?”

Highly recommended for Contemporary Romance lovers

I have read books 1 and 2 in this series as well, but this one was my favorite. I am a big fan of Ty. I knew I would be when I read first two books. His intuition – loved that characteristic. I also didn’t see a few things coming. I really liked Malina’s backstory which felt fresh and different from any book I’ve ever read- just a different take on civil unrest. I also liked that the conflict she experienced in her country influenced decisions even years later – felt like a realistic reaction. I was into the plotline that began in book one and continued in this book. I was definitely invested in the outcome. The takeaway from this story for me was how grief is different for everyone. Grief can be messy. Grief can be silent. It depends on the individual. I think the author does a great job of portraying that emotion in this story.

I have to admit I struggled a bit with this book. It is so dark, but the twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat. It was an interesting read though. I really enjoyed the normalcy of the characters and that they all clearly have flaws like all of us do. Not only can we all relate to personal flaws, we can also relate to family dysfunction. This book was fascinating as a psychological thriller, and I definitely recommend it if this is your kind of story.

Kingdom of War (Kingdom Journals Volume 4) AUDIO BOOK by Tricia Copeland – Review by Sunday Barnaby

Kingdom of War by Tricia Copeland

Narrated by Dan Delgado

Four Stars

Kingdom of War is the fourth book in the Kingdom Journals series by Tricia Copeland. This is the first book in this series that I have listened to and I had no problem following the story. That being said, I wish I would have listened to the first three books in this series. I’m planning to go back now and start from the beginning. This book is filled with action, adventure, romance and the question most pounder.. Good vs. Evil. The story was very detailed, an interesting mix of characters. This is Hunter’s story, and his part in the Trinity of Light. I believe this is a story for all ages. If you love paranormal fantasies, I would highly recommend this book.

The narrator in Dan Delgado. This is the first book I have listened to with his narration. I enjoyed the timber of his voice and the emotion he brought to the characters was extremely enlightening.

House in the Woods by Jessica Aiken-Hall – Review by Beth McKitrick

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So this book was a little outside of my wheelhouse. I’m generally a fantasy/sci fi nerd, however I thought the description sounded pretty interesting and I liked the writing style, so I decided to go out on a limb, so to speak. I don’t regret it. This was a quick, enjoyable book that was very easy to read. I did find the “suspense” aspect a bit frustrating, but that says more about me than the book, as there’s a reason I don’t read many suspense/thrillers. I would definitely say this is a bit of a “fluffy” book, in that none of the characters are super deep, nor is the writing as a whole. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on what you’re looking for. Some parts were a bit obvious/predictable from the beginning, but since the main character doesn’t see it, you spend the whole book screaming “you’re looking at wrong person, dummy!!” (Did I mention suspense isn’t really my thing?) However, there were still some twists that surprised me and kept it interesting. Overall, it’s a book that I would recommend, especially if you like this type of story, and you’re looking for something quick and easy-to-read.

Avenging Devil Part 1: Satan's Devils MC San DiegoAvenging Devil Part 1: Satan’s Devils MC San Diego by Manda Mellett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

All I can say is wow….Once I started reading this book I was pulled right in. My heart broke for Saffie and what she was put through. When she finally gets the help she has been needing for years she gets a whole new life.

Niran joined the MC after his release from the Marines. He gets roped into taking Mary, his MC brother’s wife, to her doctor’s appointment. This is where he sees Saffie and is instantly drawn to her. When Mary and Niran walk out of the appointment they find Saffie in dire straits and offer her help. Nirans protective side comes out and he doesn’t want to leave her. She clearly needs help.

Will they be able to help her? Will Saffie finally find someone that she can call friends?

This read is part one and there are so many twists and turns. I will warn that right from the beginning there are huge triggers, some that even made me flinch. The things that Saffie goes through are so real that your heart goes out to her and the choices she has to make. All of the characters added a great element to the story. And we get a heck of a cliffhanger and now I can’t wait to get part 2. I need to see what happens next. If you’re looking for a thrilling MC read then 1-click and get started today.

Competing with the Star (Star Series Book 2) by Krysten Lindsay Hager – Review by Elizabeth Sanchez

Competing with the StarCompeting with the Star by Krysten Lindsay Hager
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Competing with the Star is the 2nd book in the Star Series by Krysten Lindsay Hager. You should read them in order, as this book picks up right where the first left off. We continue to follow the life of teenager Hadley Daniels. She has recently moved to a new town, and is figuring out where she fits in socially. Over the summer, she stayed with her grandparents, and made some new friends, but teen life is confusing. She and her crush Nick have decided to make things official, which should be great news. They have so much in common and find it easy to talk to each other. However, the insecurities caused by friends comments, and rumors are prying them apart. Add in a love triangle or two, and this story is packed full of drama. Some parts had me rolling my eyes, but then I tried to remember back to what it was like being a teenager, and its spot on. Hager really captured the feelings of teenagers, both boy and girl. I love that we got to see several characters weaknesses, and how they leaned on each other, discovering who their real friends are. I think this is a great coming of age story, geared toward tween and teens, but good enough to enjoy as an adult. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Next Door to a StarNext Door to a Star by Krysten Lindsay Hager
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Next Door to a Star is the first book in The Star Series by Krysten Lindsay Hager. It is the first book I have read by her, and I enjoyed it. It is a somewhat of a coming of age book, and would be good for middle or high school kids (I am in my 30s and enjoyed it). This book follows Hadley through her awkward teen years, and finding herself. She has only one friend, who has moved away, and cannot fathom the thought of spending the summer alone. When her grandparents invite her to their home for the summer, she jumps on it. They live next door to another teen, who was a teen star actress. Hadley has dreams of becoming her friend, and in turn, increasing her popularity points. I loved seeing her transition and mature throughout the book. She learned the value of friendship, navigated her way through crushes/dating as well as how to handle backstabbing mean girls. This book has all the typical middle and high school drama, and we get to see it from the inside out. Hadley is stuck in the middle of the popular in crowd, and good friends that are not popular. I look forward to reading the second book to see what happens next.

Travels Through Aqua, Green, And Blue: A Memoir by Mary E. Gregory was a great read! I thought this was a very well written, coming of age story. This story is great for all ages, teenagers to adults. Gregory has led an incredible life, with tons of stuff that shouldn’t even have happened, and I felt very honored to he able to read her story. It must have taken so much courage to share not only her experience with her disability but her whole life story and I applaud her courage in doing so. I started reading this memoir during vacation, and took my time to read this book. There were moments that made me sit back and think….the book was descriptive and was very good. This memoir tore at my heart strings as looking at Mary Gregory’s life, growing up with a deformity and hardships. This hit me a bit, while my own mild deformity differed, I can relate and overcome like Mary. We then learn of Mary’s mom having mental health issues and her father as a preacher coming out, with many ups and downs. This is truly a journey….and many pieces to this memoir but it was a very good read.

Can I just say I LOVE Author Amy McKinley’s Deadly Isles series!!! I am just so invested. This is book 3 of this series and does not disappoint. This is the story of Malina and Ty. Malina was sent to the States by her parents to live and be safe with her aunt and uncle, and just in the nick of time… Ty and Malina hook up in Vegas for some fun, but deep down Ty knew Malina was this one for him. Years later Malina is being accused of treason….and she flees to Ty’s house to be safe and to find out whom is framing her for treason. Ty is there to help find out whom framed Malina. I just love this whole story, Ty and Malina’s love for each other and did not want this book to end. There were a few twists I did not see coming! I highly recommend reading this series from the beginning as you also get to know Ty’s brothers, Jaxon and Xander as well. This is truly a fantastic series!!!

Definitely not for the faint of heart. This book is dark from the get go and stays that way. I mostly read psychological thrillers, but I’ve never read a novel with a focus on arson. Grave Digger Academy by C.A. King- Reviewed by Erin Clemence

“Grave Digger Academy” by C.A King is a little bit “Divergent” mixed with a little bit of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, all stirred with a creepy paranormal spoon!

Makayla hopes to be chosen for the school of her choice, like the rest of her six brothers who also attend one of the schools in the paranormal school system. However, Makayla worries that she will be selected for “The Grave Digger Academy”- every students’ last choice, the school for those not accepted anywhere else. At “Grave Digger Academy” they perform spells and potions intended to keep the dead…..well, dead. So when, of course, Makayla is selected for Grave Digger Academy she must face her entire first year alone, with the disappointment of her family heavy on her heart. But Makayla knows she must make the best of it, and when she comes into her powers and realizes that her family has deep secrets that go back generations, she realizes that Grave Digger Academy may be exactly where she was intended to be.

C.A King is an award-winning Canadian author, living in a town that is not too far from my own actually, which made me even happier to be able to promote and praise “Grave Digger Academy”.

The novel is more of a novella, really, at less than 200 pages, and it has short, page-turning chapters. I easily polished this book off in a day. It is also the first in a series of novels, and if the rest are anything like this one, this series will be an instant YA hit.

Makayla is the ideal protagonist- a socially awkward misfit who struggles to fit in, even within her own family. As she comes into herself and makes friends at Grave Digger Academy, it is immediately evident that she will be the one who changes things and makes a difference. She is the character to root for, right from the first page.

With the backdrop of a depressing, neglected school of magic, and quirky, eccentric teachers, “Grave Digger Academy” sets the stage for dark and magical things. The characters were well developed, the plot was poised and had great flow, and the short chapters made the novel a page-turning, addicting experience. I can definitely see King’s “Grave Digger Academy” series becoming the next big YA trend.

I loved how both of the characters changed for the better throughout the story – and they helped to change each other! It was a sweet love story and a great quick read! I really like having a quick read every once in a while, especially when it involves characters who are so relatable like Setter and Casey. I could totally see this in real life too so it was just all around enjoyable! Great book!

This was a great thriller. Samantha Wycoff gets the most horrible news that her son has been beaten and is at the hospital. She has to make the worst decision a parent has to make of deciding to unplug her brain-dead son. Samantha knows in her heart that his abusive girlfriend did this to him, but there are no witnesses and no proof. The case goes nowhere.
Her son’s childhood best friend, Micah shows up to help support her during this horrible time. Samantha is focused on revenge and how to get it. Micah has a solution, but is she up to it? She has three months to prove herself to be able to join Micah’s team. Samantha being in her 50’s wonders if she can accomplish it.
This book really took me on a ride and was a very powerful read for me. Samantha really touched my heart, and I was rooting for her the whole way. Made me really think about how far I would be willing to go if one of my kids was murdered

Avenging Devil Part 1 (Satan’s Devils MC San Diego #3) by Manda Mellett
4 Stars

Oh my god! This book was so good! I read this book knowing it was going to end on a cliffhanger. Even though I don’t like cliffhangers, this one is so worth it. I have read most of this author’s books and I have never been disappointed. This book continues her San Diego series. The focus is on Niran this time. I liked him from the other books and I’m glad he got his own story. I’ve only gained more respect for him. He meets Saffie in the most unlikely of places and is immediately drawn to her. She’s alone and desperately needs help unfortunately she’s petrified of bikers. It was a constant push and pull between them because of it. I did get frustrated because I know what a good man Niran is. Saffie had serious trust issues and with good reason. This book is intense and it left me holding my breath. I’m anxiously waiting for part two.

The Arsonist’s Handbook by L.A. Detwiler – Review by Erica Fish

The Arsonist's Handbook: A Gripping Psychological ThrillerThe Arsonist’s Handbook: A Gripping Psychological Thriller by L.A. Detwiler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Arsonist’s Handbook is the first book by L. A. Detwiler that I have read. I will be looking for more books by her. The plotline has plot twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. There were points that I thought I knew which way the story was going to go but then it turned in the opposite direction. The characters are sincere with their description. There were emotions in the main characters that kept me on my toes because of the complex nature of their beings. Jameson was a young man who found a journal that was written by his father. He discovered that his father was an arsonist and he felt like he was taking up his father’s legacy. Then there was Pete, a father of an infant that had recently died in a fire. Since we know there is an arsonist and the two main characters are linked by an arsonist. Will Jameson follow in his Father’s footprints? Will Pete find the monster that killed his son? I highly recommend this book, but I will warn you may get so far into the story that you may forget your surroundings. Be prepared to read this story in one sitting.

Avenging Devil Part 1 (Satan’s Devils MC San Diego #3) by Manda Mellett – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Avenging Devil Part 1: Satan's Devils MC San DiegoAvenging Devil Part 1: Satan’s Devils MC San Diego by Manda Mellett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am a big fan of Manda Mellett’s and always look forward to a new Satan’s Devils MC novel coming out and as usual I was not disappointed by this latest instalment. The storyline is set within the San Diego chapter of the Satan’s Devils MC and is book three in the series. This story focuses on ex marine and biker Niran and Saffie, who meet at the hospital when Niran takes Grumbler’s ‘Old Lady’ Mary to a prenatal appointment. Saffie is also there for an appointment and gets some life changing sad news. Saffie is on the run from a horrific past and feels as though she is falling apart when she meets Niran, Niran sees that Saffie is a strong women who is hurting and needs a friend, which is what they become at first. When they first meet Niran is not wearing his Cut and is in his truck so Saffie does not realise he is part of a MC straightaway and when she finds out it’s like her worst nightmare. However, with her past catching up with her she also realises that she needs Niran by her side.

This novel takes you on an emotional rollercoaster whilst reading it and as it’s part one of two it does end on a very dramatic cliffhanger, so I am impatiently waiting for part two now. This is a very dark and intense read which deals with very harrowing themes which may be triggers for some. Having said that as usual the story is wonderfully written and the authors descriptive narrative brings the Satan’s Devils MC setting and characters to life. I felt fully immersed in the storyline and the dramatic plot kept me both gripped and hooked from start to finish. This is an engaging romantic suspense MC novel which I could not put down and I am looking forward to part two especially following that cliffhanger ending……

Travels Through Aqua, Green, and Blue: A Memoir by Mary E. Gregory – Review by Roxsanne Lesieur.

Travels Through Aqua, Green, and Blue: A MemoirTravels Through Aqua, Green, and Blue: A Memoir by Mary E. Gregory
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the story of Mary E. Gregory told in her own words, it is the story of how her world changed when she was just five years old and what happened over the course of her life after that. Mary was born into a loving family in Nashville, Tennessee, she had her mum, her dad and two siblings, a brother who was the oldest and an older sister in between the two. They were well thought of and respected in the local community but from birth, Mary had challenges, she was born with a cleft palate and had multiple surgeries over her life to correct it and the issues which came with it, this would be something she would have to accept and learn to live with over the years. The main troubles started when her father, a preacher in the local church and a pillar of the community came out as gay, this was compounded upon with the HIV and AIDS crises which were starting to come into the mainstream media and create the stigma and taboos around the diseases ehich people believes they could catch just by standing near them. The life that Mary knew was going to change drastically after this as her parents separated and divorced, the church goers and friends of the family all retreated away from them and some started rumours and talking about the family behind their backs, it was also at this point that her mother started to develop mental health issues as well.

After the divorce went through, Mary and her siblings didn’t see their father for a while until the custody and maintenance payments were sorted out, it was during this time that their mother retreated into herself and began neglecting the household and them, her older brother had to grow up quickly and look after both himself and his sisters, trying to keep them going to school on time and not letting on how bad things were at home. The situation got to a point where the school called their mum and it finally broke through the wall she had built around herself and she started booking after things again, however, when the car broke down it started over again, plus when they got to see their father, she started arguments and it became too awkward for the arrangements to stick. Their mothers increased paranoia around the situation and what she believed people were saying about her she began to use her children to wage a war against their father, this led to her buying a car, packing them into it and driving away from the only home they had ever known without looking back.

On their road trip, they visited family members to say a last goodbye to them and in between staying in rest stops, spending the little money they had on food and gas, they passed through many places until they arrived in New York where the next stage of their adventures would be. This is where Mary and the others learned about life and how hard they would have to work to stay fed, warm and with a roof over their heads, sometimes this didn;t happen at all, they shuffled from hostels, to hotels, to apartments and back to sleeping in the car, going to food banks and soup kitchens so they could eat and their mother hopping from job to job between welfare checks, the had to attend school, even though it was hard for them and embarrassing, but they made some friends along the way.

The memoir continues as they keep moving along when their mother;s paranoia hits its peak, Mary learns a lot about life and how she should approach it and scattered in between the memories are snippets of her adult life and how she has grown and changed into the woman she is today. Overall, this is a wonderful story of adversity and how even childhood trauma can be used to create a strong sense of self, while teaching others how to observe, process and learn from life, no matter what it throws at you.
