Manifested Dreams by Dr. Yvonne Johnson – Review by Angela Hayes

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Manifested Dreams by Dr. Yvonne Johnson surprised me , in a great way. I think I was expecting something with a bit more of a documentary/journaling style to it- which may have been boring…. But instead I was immediately pulled into an intriguing story that held my attention right through till the end. It is a very short story- which made for a quick and easy read, but don’t be fooled, this story may be short on pages, but it packs quite a lot into a small space. It is well-woven, with detailed descriptions, filled with thought-provoking elements, plenty of emotion, and interesting characters.
The story is complex, with several threads woven through it. Through the characters we see life through their eyes- moving from past to present, from the 1860’s to 1919, and then we work our way through to the 1990’s and then to 2008. The story examines racism, slavery, segregation, family, and the lives of African-Americans through history. We get an honest history lesson delivered in a very original, interesting, and thought-provoking way.
Definitely worth reading!

Thank you, Dr. Yvonne Johnson!
