My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Can you imagine following in the footsteps of a parent when you are their polar opposite? Flirting With My Enemy by Laura Burton introduces Elle Brook’s narrative as she attempts to make her deceased mother’s bakery successful. She has fierce competition when a Got Cake, a corporate competitor, is built next door. The day that Elle is going to release a brand-new type of cupcake, she finds that her entire store smells like rotting fish. Her “grandmother” Joyce signed for four boxes, and they are filled with trout. She is mortified, knowing that a prominent magazine reporter has arrived to do a story on Elle’s store. Elle intercepts the reporter outside to prevent her from going inside, only to have Zane Masters steal away the interview. Zane is a billionaire and owner of Got Cake. Elle is certain he has tried to sabotage her store and plans to get even with him. Her friend Connie joins her plan to seduce Zane and destroy his reputation. Little does Elle know, Zane has an ulterior motive for her as well. Did Zane sabotage Elle?

I like the development of each individual character and the emotions that Laura Burton made easy to read. This is a quick story despite being 18 chapters long. The titles of the chapters give a predictive idea of what Elle is going to face. Zane is a very sincere and emotional character, and I could easily envision being unable to resist his charm. The supporting characters are integral parts that had a large purpose to the overall story. Flirting With My Enemy is the first of a series, and I look forward to reading more of Burtons’s work in the future
