This book drew me in from the get go. The characters are wonderfully developed and their abilities are believable as to guard the tree of life. It is easy to imagine as you are reading what the town of Edenia might look like, what the characters might wear, and how they behave.

We start out meeting Miriam, who has a new power that is super invasive thus making her a pariah in a town that should be used to supernatural powers. Her family of course doesn’t let her live it down as her power must be used to protect the tree of life at all costs. Being the only one with this power Miriam experiences so much dissent in Edenia. Will she ever feel like she belongs?

Just when it seems Miriam’s dissent is reaching peak level in walks Zeke with his family, the only man to leave on sabbatical and not return. Now he has a summons from the master and a daughter dying of cancer to think about. As their father leads them to this town seemingly stuck in the past Seth realizes his fathers has been deceiving him for his whole life and now with no cancer treatment place in sight Seth doesn’t know what his dad thinks will save his sister. Seth chooses to do whatever it takes to save his sister, after all his father has lied about everything. How far will Seth go to save his sister’s life? Can the guardians protect the tree of life from enemies outside the town and those within? If you like fantasy novels filled with mystery and intrigue then this book is for you. It was super hard to put down because I just had to know what happened next!
