The Serpent Awakens by Luna Saint Claire – Review by Maryn Belling

Several content warnings are missing from this text; although it goes out of its way to assure us it’s a work of fiction. Maybe you read the first book and already know you can overcome the misogyny, polyamory, abuse (physical, mental, spiritual), drugs, and controlling (compelling) of cult-like devotees. Maybe you’re reading this book on its own.

The author is clearly well-read and gifted at developing characters and a story-line.

Nico is a user and abuser of women and drugs. As a teacher of Kundalini Yoga, he’s supposed to be a caretaker of others’ spiritualities so they can heal through the practice. Whether to appeal to the reader’s compulsion to fix others or to discredit holistic practitioners; Nico couldn’t be farther from a true yogi than if he were on a vintage Cartoon Network episode with a side-kick named BooBoo and a jaunty little hat. Unfortunately he’s compelling his devotees.

If you’re looking for a philosophical bent to your brooding bad boy, this book is probably for you. Poor Nico; nobody understands him & his Sisyphean quest except for you & Albert Camus. If you’re looking for a story where the devil gets his due, this isn’t it.

Unless you need an adult version of Nick Jr complete with a talking jaguar and cultural appropriation, skip the book and upgrade your jam to Calvin Harris’ new album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2.
