What Do Plants Say? is the first book in Alex, the Inventor series by Lois Wickstrom. This is an illustrated children’s story that includes some science on sound waves. Alex is an inventor and likes to make useful things out of unused and ‘old’ items. In this story we follow along as she brainstorms ideas for inventing a plant translator so she can listen and talk to her plants.
While the story was interesting, and the pictures were on-point, I was left feeling a little disappointed and conflicted, because I love gardening and I would have been heart-broken if my child/grandchild had destroyed my garden by up-rooting as many plants as Alex did in her ‘adventure’.
