I was so excited to read this one because it gives the background of Ian Troy. I really wanted to know what happened before he had the crown of stones. I have enjoyed this setting and the characters and I really liked getting to read the prequel to the other books in the series. This is an action packed fantasy book with magic users set in an almost ancient time. Ian has been sent to be in Queen Aylagar’s army by the king. He is Shinree and no one looks at him, no one talks to him, no one trusts him, all because of the magic within him. He is chosen as one of a small group of soldiers to go on a secret mission. While on the road, he is able to cast and use his magic as needed so that he is not feeling deprived and weak. Magic does give him a bit of a high and he can have magic blackouts so he needs to make sure he can control his use. When his group picks up some small children after a wolf attack, the Commander is not sure what to do with them. Ian is getting to know that other people in the group and some trust is starting to be built. He is hoping that this mission can change how people see him and magic users and maybe he can also live up to the warrior that he is meant to be. I hope there is another one between this one and the next to fill in some more gaps!
