I can’t say if the books in this series can be read as standalones as I have started on book six which most times is not a good thing as there could be great background information that I have missed out on. This book has plenty of twists and turns some may be somewhat of a surprise. We also have some tragedy and betrayal; I also like the writing style of this author, which by the way this is the first book I have read by her. Kat and her brother Nat were brought up by their maternal grandma after their parents died in an accident before Kats’s first birthday. Now they have lost their grandma as well. Their grandma has left her home equally to both Kat and Nat and named him as Kat’s guardian. Kat is now 15, Nat is away in the army so until they can get hold of Nat she needs to be placed in care, as this will be a temporary placement, what could go wrong? Plenty is the answer. Kat reports that the foster parent’s son had exposed himself to her instead of being mad at their son, they were mad at Kat, so she left for school and never returned to the home. This home will now be investigated as its suitability for other children to be placed there. If that is not enough for a 15-year-old to go through she is an unfortunate witness to a murder. Kat is placed under social worker Maddi’s care, while Maddi not only needs to protect Kat but is also working to reunite Kat with her brother so she can be safe in her own home. This is a book for budding love as we find Nat falling in love with Maddi, but is Maddi able to return the feelings? Grab a copy of this book to find out what happens with Kat, Nat, and Maddi.
