THE PATIENCE OF KARMA (A Madeline Dawkins Mystery #5) by Cynthia Hamilton – Review by Angela Shirley

The Patience of KarmaThe Patience of Karma by Cynthia Hamilton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Patience of Karma is the fifth book in the Madeline Dawkins series and this book follows on from the intense stories that have rocked these two loveable characters.

The story sets up with them having been married for four months and they are still delving into the world of the PI’s while still trying to escape her ex-husband and with secrets threatening to shake there world, it’s just another day in the lives of these two characters.

This next adventure has them searching for a lost nephew who could save his sister, they are engaged to follow a woman who’s famous husband thinks she is having an affair and many more come out of the woodwork.

This story continues to enlighten you with the history of the two main characters although this story heavily sides towards Mike which is great to see inside such a brilliant developed character. Although there is a arc that runs through all the books you can still read this as a standalone. With the twists and turns, drama which is associated with a Madeline Dawkins book this one does not disappoint. I can’t wait for the next installment in this great series.

As they work closely together she starts to see that there can be light in his broken heart but will she be able to crack through before its too late.

I love this series, each book offers a great insight into the worlds RL Dunn creates. Julian and Holly’s characters are brilliant together and the chemistry pluses off the page and just draws you into the story where I could not stop reading. I do have to say I think these two are my favourite of the duo’s I have read and the tension and action is just enough not to be too unrealistic.

Each story can be read as a standalone but some characters do arc into each story and who would not want to read more of this wonderful stories. I can’t wait to read the next installment to this story soon.

It’s never too late to discover yourself.

Connor is in a plato at the moment with life events catching up with him, turning 40 and losing his father he has kind of lost his purpose in life. Although his wife understands there is just no real drive anymore for his career until he takes his godson under his wing and they go on a road trip of discovery.

Dolan has been a part of the rock world ever since he was born, having everything handed to him, he does not seem to have the drive to make his band successful. His relationship with his father is rocky, so when his godfather and idol decides to go with him on a road trip to meet a girl he met online, they both discover things they didn’t know that they need to find within themselves.

This is the first story I have read within the Rogue series and I have to say although I followed the story and characters I would recommend reading the series from the beginning, I have missed the growth of these characters through each book and would love to go back to read them in the future to understand these complex characters.

Although I had not had the chance to meet them before this did not deter from the well developed story that was woven in the book, the relationship between the two main characters was heartwarming and believable. I loved the self discovery moments within the story as you are never too old to find yourself especially after tragedy. I would recommend this series to anyone who loves to read a great book and story.

Ashley was self centre as a girl growing up but as the years have gone on she has become a independent and strong woman, until one chance meeting with Brian all these years later may have her thinking anything is possible.

I loved the way you are glided along with there story and get to see this relationship develop as you weave through the wonderful world of Crystal Rock and Dragon pointe Inn with the secondary characters just makes you feel like you want to visit this beautiful place.

Ava is from the infamous Rhodes family and although she has everything the thing she requires the most is love, while at college she finally gets her fantasy with her best friends with a night of pure passion but by morning everything changes.

After that fateful night Hunter has been trying to fight the demons from his past with trying to move forward. After working with Ava and Thomas for years he now has to ask for forgiveness or will there relationship be lost forever.

The first book in this series was brilliant but I think I loved this book more, Ava is such a great strong character within the first book you know there must be a story behind her coldness. The three of them together have great chemistry and although the story in arced with Shattered the first book it does not loss its own flow for their story.

Forest Park: Logan Book 2 is the second book in this series which follows the life of Logan Mckenna’s life through her job as a school teacher and a part time sleuth.

The story is full of mystery and drama with Logan waiting for her new boyfriend to arrive at the hotel they have booked for their first interment moment but when she receives the phone call that he has to postpone the trip she carries on and books into the hotel room. Upon the day she meets a food truck owner and someone from there family while talking to them she strikes up a bond of sorts.

Back in her room she hears a boom and finds out that the truck has been blown up and the women who she met has been murdered. With her new found friendship she decides to investigate the murder which uncovers things from the past which the family wants keeped hidden.

This is the second book by this author I have read and the second book in this series, I enjoy the topics which have been chosen to be explored but the multiply POV’s sometimes gets a bit messy within chapters and sometimes within the same paragraphs which can get a little confusing and somehow dilutes the story. Within the story I don’t fully get the character of Logan at times I am rooting for her one minute but other times she gets a little annoying.

The story as I said itself is intriguing and draws you into the thriller and mystery aspect of the book, the story is well written and flows well. I am looking forward to reading the next book and see if Logan can get her lovelife back on track and what next adventure she can delve into.

When you have been burnt in the past, can you trust your heart with someone else. Kelly needs to believe that love can happen and her fairytale can end with Tate or can it?

Kelly has had her heart broken and left the big city and returned to Sweet Ridge, there she has opened a florist a job she absolutely loves. Tate has had to take on the honour of running the Peach Farm when his dad has had a stroke but with the harvest approaching and his brother volunteering the farm for the Founder’s Day parade will he have time for all he needs to do.

Kelly and Tate need to work together for the parade but what is this chemistry between them and will they give in and both give love a chance, you will have to read the story to see what happens.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I loved the story and the characters. Kelly although comes across as a independent, sassy woman there is a real vulnerability that I think we all have to just be loved for who she is and is it wrong to dream for the white picket fence and 2.5 children. Tate’s character was an eye opener from the womaniser reputation to his really fragile relationship with his brothers, to the devotion he showed to his father who could not fall in love with man.

I can’t wait to read the next book in this series and wonder who is the next brother or character to find his way through this wonderful writing.

Aaron and Branson are identical twins in there last year of college, they decided to go to seperate colleges but their bond has never been stronger until someone decides that they need to come between these two brothers.

In the first book we discovered that Branson suffered with mental health issues which rocked all there worlds but this book delves into the world of Aaron. With the realisation that Aaron also suffers from a mental health issue but not the same as his brother.

The book follows each of the main characters within their own chapters but to be honest I did get a bit lost to which mind or story I was reading, this did not distract from the story but just made me work that little bit harder to discover the character. I would recommend reading the first book in this series to lay some of the groundwork you will need further on in the book.

I have to admit the first half of the book was okay but I carried on and was blown away by the last few chapters in the book which certainly revealed so twist and turners to the whole story.

This is a psychological thriller which touch some subject matter is can be uncomfortable to read but the story has been well planned and written. This is an original storyline which will have you pondering the subject matter regarding mental illnesses.

When you trust and confide in on the only person you believe you can truly trust to find out they may not even be real!

This book revolves around Brandon who is struggling with life, he has pressures and needs some sort of normal in life but when he reveals that he has been hearing voices in his head will his life be the same ever again.

I enjoyed the story and thought the author tackled the strong subject of the mental health aspect of the story really well. I loved the insight with in Brandon’s chapters on his struggles and how he truly understood himself and what he was dealing with. The sister character Carson was a refreshing extra as her straight talking and humour broke up the intense story.

I do have to say I loved the interaction between Aaron and Brandon and the twin bond really came through within the writing of this story but I do have to add that I did not warm to the mother character, Tara. I appreciate that this must be difficult for a parent but I couldn’t get over the woah am I drama she presents through the book.

All in all the book is well researched and brilliantly written I would say it is more of a competemary book so if you’re looking for a really gritty thriller this may not be the book for you, but I suggest if you are looking to open your mind and learn about the hard issues of mental health this is a great insight into that world.

The Frontman by Lawrence Parlier – Review by Angela Shirley

The FrontmanThe Frontman by Lawrence Parlier
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When an ageing rock star dies on tour, is it suicide or is there other forces working?

The book opens with the death of Kerry Vance a veteran Rock Star who is found believing he has overdosed on heroin, but when a stranger comes forward to protest to his family that they believe it was foul play that’s when the story gets interesting.

This is the first book by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery thriller aspect of the story. The main characters are great and complement each other brilliantly, although there are alot of secondary characters which enhances the story excellently. As the story flows through the main story there are little stories that’s been well written and developed which has you engrossed until the last word.

I would recommend this story to anyone who loves a good mystery which is unique and a page turning. Can’t wait to read more books by this author.

Confidentiality (Scope of Practice Book 2) by Jessica Aiken-Hall – Review by Angela Shirley

Confidentiality (Scope of Practice Book 2)Confidentiality by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Everything is going for Valerie at last but when there is a serial killer in the mix, can Valerie and Tim find out who it is in time.

Valerie is finally settled and not isolated anymore she has a loving fiance, family and friends and Valerie and Tim are doing well, planning for the up and coming wedding when Tim gets involved in investigating the tragic murders which are happening within Lawerenceville.

As Val gets more involved within her group she can’t lose the feeling that there is a connection with the murders that no one else seems to know or wants to believe, its upto Val to try and uncover who this person is and when you have secrets and lies well hidden can you help.

I loved the first book in this series and I was excited to see the relationship between Tim and Val progress and grow and it was brilliant the banter that these two characters have is a joy to read. I love the way Jessica Aiken-Hall writes about the gritty subjects with the consideration of the victim and showing this side of society. The story flowed and with twists and turn unraveling the brilliant story it was a page turner.

I feel you don’t have to read the first book to follow or appreciate the story but I think it is best if you have as you then have a better insight into the wonderful character of Valerie. I definitely recommend you read this book and get caught up in the thrilling story.

The Traveler: Chimera Revolution (The Book of Eleanor 2) by Shannon Nemechek – Review by Angela Shirley

The Traveler: Chimera Revolution (The Book of Eleanor 2)The Traveler: Chimera Revolution by Shannon Nemechek
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Traveller: Chimera Revolution is a story full of action and fantasy, with Katie fighting to protect the book will she be able to and get back.

Katie has be propelled back to 1779 Savannah where she has met Colm and with his help they are trying to uncover truths and trying to keep safe the people are helping them but can they survive. Katie is delving into the world of magic to try and protect the book but are there forces against them and can Katie battle against evil.

I have a bit of a disadvantage as I delved straight into this book with out reading the first one and although I caught up with the story I felt I missed some important elements to this story and so I read the first book after this one and caught up to date so too speak.

The characters were brilliant and you could feel the chemistry coming off the page with Katie and Colm, especially with the commitment that both seemed to have. The story was well written and had a bit of an “Outlander” feel which flowed through which making me forget the world around me and was transported into the world with them. The secondary character compliment the story and the main characters and not distract from the story.

I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who loves the fantasy, action packed stories this is certainly one for you.

Calamity under the Chandelier (A Sleuthing Starlet Mystery Book 1) by Camilla Blythe – Review by Angela Shirley

Calamity under the Chandelier (Sleuthing Starlet Mystery #1)Calamity under the Chandelier by Bianca Blythe
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Calamity under the Chandelier is a crime story based in the 1940’s, what happens when two American Starlets descend on a very “British” Christmas and discover a murder to boot.

Cora and Veronica are making there way to UK to spend time with Veronica’s new in laws which just happen to be the Duke and Duchess. As they try to blend in with the group of people who are there for Christmas the two of them seem to draw attention in whatever they do.

When a chandelier drops from the ceiling and kills no other than the Duke, Veronica is classed as the number one suspect in the matter but the family seem to be just sweeping it under the carpet. Until Cora gets involved and decides to solve the mystery and prove her friends innocence.

This story is the first story I have read by this author and really enjoyed the flow and the twists and turns, it is a great insight into the british elite and was a fascinating read from start to finish. The characters are well developed and complement each other well. I also love the way this was set just after the roaring 20’s/ 30’s were freedom and individuality was just becoming explored.

I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series.
