London Detective Agency (London Detective Agency Series) by Stephanie R. Caffrey – Review by Charlisa Wahtomy-Alba

London Detective Agency: The Complete SeriesLondon Detective Agency: The Complete Series by Stephanie R. Caffrey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So far I have enjoyed what this author has offered so far in this series. I hope there are more to come. Each story has its own unique case that is being worked and there is a little love match happening in the background. We have a case of not only mistaken identity but mistaken luggage in book one. That luggage puts Evelyn in such a danger that the PI on the case, Patrick, feels obligated to keep her safe after grabbing her and then letting her go. In book two we meet Tessa and James. Tessa opens a bakery and things are going really well, but she starts to receive threatening pictures and letters. This prompts her to hire PI, James, to find out who is behind these threats and see if they can be stopped. These are fairly quick reads and will keep you turning the pages.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Petra Ondise has two goals: rise from the rank of laundry aid to courier and find out how her brother truly died. Her brother was a loyal courier for the crown when he came to an untimely death. During the Festival of the Late Harvest Moon, she runs into Third Shivalry Captain Rand Tsenturian. There were rumors that her brother and the Captain were not strangers, so what were they to one another? Captain Tsenturian took Petra to the the garden where the Antediluvian Stone is housed. He revealed that her brother, Aldeny, had taken himself out. In her refusal to believe that to be true, she placed her hand on the stone and demanded he tell the truth or she would make him her sacrifice. Upon this declaration she unintentionally bound the two of them together. What does this mean for them? I enjoyed this book and I do hope there is a second one. Though the story starts out slow it does get better so stick with it and you won’t be disappointed. The characters and world building were great. Fantasy isn’t a genre that I delve into very often, and I mostly end up picking misses, so I was glad to find a good one.

Love and Fate (Braebeach Rockstar #2)Love and Fate by Loriana Cappello
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow, this book had me in tears. It’s always hard to lose a loved one, but to have a child on the way as well has got to be hard. That’s what Angie is facing and even though she feels alone she has a great group of friends and family that are there to help and support her in every way possible. She went through a lot of grief, healed and became stronger. Tommy was a total ass when he was first introduced but he had great growth and matured over the book. He also went through a hardship when he and his wife decided it was no longer worth it to be married any longer. While he is trying to figure his life out and what is best for his young son, they move back to Braebeach. Although they had kept in touch after the tragic loss of Angie’s husband they never went further. Tommy still has deep feelings for Angie and would like to have a second chance but is she willing and ready? This was an emotional ride so buckle up and make sure you have tissue nearby.

The queen has a child that is the next in line for the throne, however, a supposed son of the deceased crown prince has come out of the shadows and laid his claim to the throne. Nothing will stop him from taking what he feels belongs to him by right. The queen will need to do everything in her power to stop him from succeeding. Who can she turn to for help? While the world building and characters were great I do have to agree with a lot of others by saying that you should definitely read the other books in this series first. It did take me a little bit to decipher exactly what was happening, who the main players were, the relationships between characters, and what everyone’s role was to the plot. Once I picked that up it was smooth sailing from there.

Acheron is a Vulture Shifter, an outcast that has been shunned by other shifters for touching the dead. Someone has to though, right? He has been feeling restless as of late but has the opportunity to travel to the town of Mandara at the request of a dying soul. There he meets Clarissa, the dying soul that requested his presence, and Errapel who happens to be his mate. Acheron follows the rules and one of the major ones is that he should never take a mate. How can fate have played such a cruel joke? Will Acheron and Errapel get a happily ever after? This was a quick read that can be read in about 30 minutes. I have read a few other books by this author, even under another pen name, and they were all good. I enjoy the writing style and how she described these characters. There was a lot packed into roughly 60 pages and I wanted more once it ended. I will hold out hope for a longer version.

He has all but given up on life when he happens to win the lottery. James has hit the big time but rather than make his life easier he becomes a target of dangerous people. His past is starting to catch up with him and it’s going to take everything he has to survive. I enjoyed this book and characters both good and bad. At first I was a bit daunted by the many chapters and afraid the book would drag on. However once I started reading and got drawn into the story that quickly changed. I am glad to have found a new series to get into and I am eager to start book two.

Driving into the NightDriving into the Night by Amanda Kay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Just from reading the title and the dark cover I figured this would be some sort of thriller mystery. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t. Kenai is a hunter and Mikal is a demon. Their families have been fighting one another for a long time and they are both expected to play their parts and keep the feud going. Things get a little messy when they find themselves attracted to one another. Instead of fulfilling the desired outcome of one or the other dying, they opt to try and change the outcome. Will they be able to find happiness together or are their fates already written in the stars?

Noah, Charlotte and Yohan are in a polyamorous relationship, however they are also allowed relationship outside of their little unit. They collectively decided to be only with each other when they decided to have a child. One of the characters uses they/them pronouns which threw me off a little as I am not used to reading it even though I hear it used daily. I found myself drawn into this world created by the author and finished the book in one sitting. I haven’t read any of the previous books in this series, but I am very interested in reading about the other character. There are a few things talked about that could be a trigger warning so read at your own risk.

Jessica used to be an adrenaline junkie and it may or may not have gotten her into some tough spots. Of course the things she was doing at the time weren’t legal but she has turned over a new leaf. She is now a detective and doing everything by the book until the name of a youth pastor comes across her desk. There are rumors of him doing not so nice things and she wants to find out the truth. Pastor Wright is a client of the firm so it isn’t so weird for her to look into his background, but what could be uncovered? Young girls and a property owner have come up missing. She thinks she knows who is behind the disappearances but what is the cost? This was a good book jump into. I haven’t read the first book but I will definitely be picking it up to get more background on our main character.

Gaelen has been living for a long time and feels like he may finally have something that will end it. Instead, he finds himself in a series of catacombs with a journal that he found. It’s not just any journal though. This one was written by his old buddy Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and it speaks of things not of this world. Within its pages he finds a shard of glass that belongs to a stained glass panel he made a century earlier. What was it doing there? With the glass in hand he is thrust into the world spoken of on the pages of the journal. He knows he is as sane as ever, but how did he get to this other world? This was a fun sequel to The Apothecary’s Curse that can be read as a standalone if you wish.

Offsides: Game Time SeriesOffsides: Game Time Series by Tam DeRudder Jackson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love a good sports romance and this one is no exception. Chessly has always wanted to work with athletes but is hesitant on dating them. She especially isn’t interested in Finn when she sees what kind of women he entertains. The more time they spend together the more they realize they have in common. Could that be their jumping off point and start a relationship? Finn wants to show Chessly that he’s a one woman man and she is the woman he wants. Will she give him the opportunity? I’m not sure which book in this series I have enjoyed the most as they are all great. The characters had good development and the story didn’t feel rushed, nor did it drag on. So far each book can stand on its own so you won’t feel lost if you haven’t read any of the others.

Master Bistrita (Masters of the Consulate #11)Master Bistrita by Sylvia Black
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I can’t believe we are almost at the end of this series. It has been a wild ride! Master Bistrita meets his fated mate, Chara, in the bar owned by the vampires. She has been working there for years so it is a mystery how the two of them never met. If I had to guess it was because Bistrita didn’t visit the bar regularly or he wasn’t destined to find his mate until now. All it took was a pack of rogue wolves trying to harm everyone in the bar. She is a woman that marches to the beat of her own drum and breaks the rules rather than follows them. He on the other hand is the one that makes the rules and needs to have control at all times. How can two people who are so different be perfect for each other? All of these books have been fast paced but they are all good. Each book is about a different Master and each can be read on their own. I however do suggest reading them in order due recurring characters and the inevitable buildup to the end of this ongoing war.

Soul SacrificeSoul Sacrifice by Courtney Davis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ebony lives in a world where the government pretty much dictates everything. She lives off the rations the government provides and what she can get by with from working. Ebony is what is called a half soul and she has the opportunity to become whole if she can find the person with the other half. The catch is that she would have to fight for that other half and only one can live. When she finds out she has cancer she decides to sacrifice herself so that whoever has the other half of her soul may live a full life. She hires Lark who is a searcher and can help bring the two halves together. There is a spark between them but it should be impossible since Ebony only has half a soul. Will she still be willing to give up her life now that she has possibly found her soulmate? This is genre that I have recently started to dabble in here and there. It was a little confusing in some parts while piecing things together but it eventually all came together and was then easy to understand. I hope to get some time to read more from this author.

Falling Down (The Rockstar Series) by Anne Mercier – Review by Charlisa Wahtomy-Alba

Falling Down (ROCKSTAR)Falling Down by Anne Mercier
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Lucy and Jesse had a chance meeting at the airport in Chicago. Jesse was a mega star, lead guitarist/keyboardist/singer of the rock back Falling Down. Lucy had been following the band since their early days and had a major crush on Jesse. They had an instant connection, a spark if you will, but the timing just wasn’t right. Six long years later they meet up again, this time on the set of Falling Down’s newest music video. When Jesse proposes a weekend of no strings attached sex Lucy tries her hardest to keep things strictly professional. When the video wraps she decides that she can’t pass up the opportunity that has been presented. She goes into it knowing that Jesse doesn’t do relationships, but as the weekend progresses things start to change. Will one weekend be enough? I enjoyed this book as well as the characters. I enjoyed Lucy’s mama and her antics because I understood where she was coming from as a mother. If you like angsty rock stars finding true love even though they swear they will be a forever bachelor this is your book.
