A Crossbow Christmas by Ann Swann is a women’s fiction story- a family drama of sorts set around Christmas in the aftermath of the pandemic- makes for an interesting read with a bit of an emotional quality.
Carina, the mc, is such a relatable character, contemplating her life- feeling lonely, and a little melancholy. Her life reflection comes at the stage where her children have all left the nest, her husband and her have been married for so long that she feels they take things for granted. She has always been the one caring for others, but who takes care of her? Who is she if she’s not the caregiver? She’s lost herself in it all along the way and doesn’t know quite how to turn things around. After feeling overlooked and unappreciated, and with those life reflections weighing heavy on her mind- an opportunity to spend Christmas in a mountain cabin in Colorado presents itself- but she really isn’t the adventurous sort and going alone feels very daunting. Will she take a leap and go? What happens when she gets there? Will she ‘discover’ herself again and find new purpose in her life? What of her family? Will she get the Christmas she hopes for?
Emotional and relatable.
Happy reading…

Thank you, Ann Swann!

The Protector (The Freemasons Book 4) by Nicole Flockton – Review by Jennifer Gordon

The Protector (The Freemasons #4)The Protector by Nicole Flockton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another enjoyable novel in this series about a group of Freemasons, and this story focuses on Declan Burkhard and Renee Cadmon, in this brother’s best friend romance. Renee was kidnapped and her innocence was stolen when she was sold to the highest bidder. Having been rescued from that horror, she has been trying to reclaim her life but it’s harder than she imagined. Her brother’s best friend Declan has been her rock, but strictly as a friend, although before she was taken she had hoped they could become more. Renee doesn’t think that Declan would be interested in her “broken and tainted soul”. However, Declan has always had feelings for Renee, he just didn’t act on them because she’s his best friends sister, and then she was taken.

Declan knows that she doesn’t think she’s “worthy of being loved”, but he wants to show her that’s not true. Declan is just happy to be apart of her life as she gets used to her freedom and will do anything to protect her, even if it means burying his desires. Renee is put in danger yet again when the person who orchestrated her abduction returns, but Declan is determined to eliminate the threat for good. I felt completely immersed in this story and engaged with the characters, as the descriptive narrative brings both the setting and characters vividly to life. The storyline does deal with some unsettling themes, but does so sensitively and in context with the story. I was hooked from start to finish and was kept happily turning the pages late into the night!

This book was a quick read. I did like the character Juliet but I had a really hard time with Jim. I struggled with him calling her “Miss Teacher Lady” and the strong emphasis of him needing more culture by way of his speaking. I appreciated that she was a teacher and he was an ex-Marine in construction as that is something I can connect with. I just had a difficult time connecting with their particular love story. Overall, it was a cute book.

This book is easily my favourite one in the series so far. I loved everything about it – the story, the characters. It has some deep topics that are addressed, which could be triggers for some people. It’s makes the book that much more complex and really pulled me into the story.
I thought the author handled the story well. She has a great way of tackling rough topics while creating an enjoyable story. I loved this book and cannot wait to read more from this author.

I really enjoyed reading about Carina and her Christmas adventure. It was nice to experience life in a world that has been affected by covid not because covid has been idealistic but because it is our new norm and this story shows how that has affected life in big and small ways. I love Christmas time and have always wanted a white Christmas. It was nice to be able to be transported to a place where life seems ideal and Christmases are white. I was happily surprised by the stories twists and would definitely recommend this story.

This is the 4th, and final (sob sob) book ina fantastic series that I will definitely read over again. One thing I’d like to add is that, in my humble opinion, the author saved the best till last. This is definitely my favourite book in the series.
This one totally tugged at my heartstrings and dragged me through so many emotions. Declan and Renee’s story is heart-breaking yet joyous at the same time. Just knowing what Renee has gone through in the past and how it must be so hard for her to adjust to her new life makes her one of the strongest female characters that I’ve read. And what can I say about Declan? Well, he’s just perfect for her. His, love and compassion shine through and totally melt your heart.
I loved reading Declan and Renee’s story, It was difficult to read in parts but all worth the angst in the end. I also loved getting glimpses into the other 3 couples lives and seeing how their relationships are progressing.
This is a great book and I’d definitely recommend it, (and the three books that come before it).

This was such a cozy, sweet holiday novel. This was the perfect book to get me in the holiday spirit. This is a sweet romance story that featured more mature characters – which I loved so much! Savannah is such a sweet main character, I really felt for her as her story unfolded. From it being her first Christmas alone to her time at Howardson’s where she met another lonely soul. Meeting Matthew literally changed her life.
I truly enjoyed this story, I found both Matthew and Savannah so sweet and endearing. This is the perfect story to read on a snowy night under the lights of the Christmas Tree.

Hot for Teacher: Shakespeare made us fall in love
By: Felicia Carparelli

I want to start out that this book was not at all what I thought it was going to be. This is so much more than two adults engaged in a consensual relationship story. And it doesn’t need a trigger warning, which definitely is something I am so glad for.
This book was absolutely amazing. I could not put it down! It is a take on a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet is a divorced, grandmother who has a self-imposed vow of celibacy. Jim is a widow and is headed back to college to start to soften some rough edges. Juliet is his teacher.
I loved this story. Juliet is very reserved and quiet, afraid of this romance. While Jim is so involved and passionate right from the start. I loved that this is was a second chance romance book. Both of them deserved love and they found it. I also love that the story was told from both characters. Finally, there was an added twist of Juliet being in danger from another former student. I truly loved this story.

This book was well written. Juliet is divorced grandmother who loves her family and teaches at night. She has a new student names Jim who is a widowed father of grown twin boys and is about 10 years younger then his attractive teacher. There’s an instant attraction on both parts but, Juliet has a wall up around her heart which is hard to break through. Jim is persistent if nothing else and breaks down her walls.
I believe Juliet needs a strong man in her life to stand up for her and keep her safe. She’s good at keeping herself safe until she is nearly kidnapped by someone she trusts. Thankfully Jim wasn’t far behind and was able to rescue her. I enjoyed reading this book but, I felt it might be missing something and that’s why I gave it 4 stars

Savannah is a widow and mom who is struggling with the fact that she will spend the holidays without her family since her son has made other plans. She makes an incredible decision to visit a gorgeous location for a special holiday vacation at The Blue Spruce Inn in the gorgeous mountains in New Hampshire. The Inn’s holiday itinerary makes Savannah crave to be there ASAP. So, she has chosen to save money by limiting her spending which is always a good idea.

While visiting Howardson’s around Halloween time, she reminisces about life with her young son when visiting the location during the holidays, specifically Christmas time. Their Christmas displays were always impeccable and memorable. Little did she know that by visiting Howardson’s on that date would literally change her life forever. A chance meeting with a handsome man results in the receipt of an intriguing proposition. She was not immediately sold on the idea, but charming Matthew was able to change her mind.

This delightful story follows Savannah and Matthew’s adventure in learning about themselves and each other. I found Savvanah’s sense of humor charming. Matthew’s personality, especially after meeting Savannah was quite endearing as well.

I really enjoyed how the author built up the imagery of the Inn and I found myself wishing I could visit the location around the holidays. Who wouldn’t enjoy a gorgeous mountain vacation!?

This story was funny, dramatic and sweetly romantic. I think most readers will enjoy the journey and getting to know the characters as they progress and grow.

I liked this book a lot. It touched upon real life issues that people go through. From sickness to loss to loneliness. It taught about forgiveness, taking care of yourself and being selfless. It was a great read just in time for the holidays. The majority of the book is about grief and at first I thought hmmm this isn’t going to be a feel good story but I was completely wrong. By the end of the book my heart was so full. Definitely a good read.

Juliet is a divorcee, mother, grandma, and college professor. Jim is a widow, ex-marine, father, and business owner. When Jim becomes a student in Juliet’s class, she finds him very attractive (and infuriating). However, her past has forced her to build a wall around her heart. Jim is determined to break that wall down with some old-fashioned woo-ing and a flirting. But, when Juliet’s past comes back, will she throw the walls back up? Or does she see the future that Jim is trying to show her?

Jim and Juliet’s story was enjoyable to read. There were quite a few tropes happening in this book: age gap, teacher-student, and second-chance at love…just to name a few. There were a lot of humorous moments and I found Jim to be determined while Juliet is quite stubborn. There were times when the story was a bit slow…but I pushed through and found the story to be enjoyable. Being a Romeo and Juliet lover…I liked how it was intertwined throughout the story.

A Crossbow Christmas
By: Ann Swann

This book takes place in a pandemic world. I love books that tackle the “new normal” that we are all facing right now. So that is major points already for me.
Carina was definitely affected by the pandemic. Haven’t we all. She was in the hospital for several months, working to recover. Now that she’s home all she wants to do is celebrate Christmas with her family. However, everyone’s lives got busier while she was in the hospital. Her husband is too busy working to show that he wants a family Christmas of times past. Her kids are grown, with families of their own. They have all moved away and are too busy to stop and have the Christmas their mother desires.
A friend offers her his cabin for Christmas. If she goes she will definitely have a white Christmas. In her journal, she writes about her desire to go to the cabin. However, she also writes about her worries about going to the cabin alone. Through her journaling, we see that she doesn’t think it is possible to go by herself. How can she? She’s been so busy taking care of everyone else she doesn’t know how to take care of herself. Really, she doesn’t know how she can have a vacation all by herself.
Carina is possibly one of the most relatable characters I have read in a long time. Every mother, wife, woman can relate to her struggles. We may not be able to relate to her struggle of wanting a big Christmas, but we can relate to her struggle to do something nice for ourselves. I don’t know any woman who would willingly take a trip by themselves without second guessing themselves. I think that Ann Swann did a great job encapsulating womens feelings in this story. She captured a women’s grief in the changing seasons of her family. I think everyone about to go through the empty nest process can also relate to those feelings.
I can say I felt the otherside of this as well. I am not a mother or a grandmother. But I am a daughter and I see the change that parents feel when I am torn about who to spend time with on the holidays.
This is such a great book! I definitely recommend it to anyone wanting relatable characters as well as a holiday theme!

A Crossbow Christmas by Ann Swann – Review by Jenni Bishop

A Crossbow ChristmasA Crossbow Christmas by Ann Swann
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Crossbow Christmas tells the story of a woman who is lonely and sad and was ill and somewhere along the way lost who she really is. She contemplates her life and how she got to where she is.

It is a tale that I think a lot of people will relate to. Who are when the kids are grown? Who are you when you have been married for so long? Who are you when you have always been the care giver? Who are you when you feel lost and don’t know who you are anymore? Who are you when you feel like others are moving on, but you are standing still?

Carina ponders those same questions and sometimes the road to finding the answers to those questions is a frightening place to look. Some time away, some time to herself, some time in a different place may just be what she needs to find herself and her Christmas miracle.

It is an emotional read but a good read.

The Perfect Mrs. Claus is a sweet romance tale where the couple are more mature. It was nice to see to lonely hearts who have lived life not beating around the bushes which only comes from maturity. Howardson’s Emporium is where the magic happens people from all walks of life come to see the wonders of Christmas and the one place you can find Mrs Claus.

This heartfelt and heart-warming tale gives you all the feels. It is a magical tale to get lost in and enjoy what it represents.

Hot for Teacher is a second chance romance. Is it Felicia’s take on a modern-day Romeo and Juliet retelling? You will just have to read it to find out. The characters are a little older than the norm (which I like to see) and the female lead is 10 years older than the man. I like that age is not a factor. I liked that the characters have real life experience with relationships and know what they want. The characters are sweet and likable.

The story is told in dual POV, which I love and there was some good old-fashioned wooing and humour to help the story along. I would have liked just a few more of the key elements for a great romance. The premise of the story was good, but I wanted just a little more as it was a little slow going at times.

What do you find when you take a class on Shakespeare?

Jim & Juliet. He’s an ex-marine with no college experience. She’s a college teacher. They are both older, have grown children and are moving on in life. I loved the second-chance romance. The flirtiness between them was awesome. Nothing like firting around Romeo and Juliet. My favorite part was him calling her to ask for dating advice. The story is classic. The characters were well-developed. They were not drawn up as being old, stodgy people. Humor, fun and an entertaining story for all. The writing is contemporary and keeps you interested and quite entertained. I loved this. It’s a new author to me and I hope to read more from her.

This was such a wonderful read. I really connected with the characters I met and came to love. The story was sweet, but had a lot of festiveness that related to the holiday spirit! Wonderful read!

Personally loved Savannah and felt for her truly. A Christmas being spent alone is hard enough, but when you lose your soul mate, its even harder. Loved her personally. She gets a chance to find the holiday spirit still through an encounter, and to say the least, it is life changing. I loved her and Matthew. Sweet together m and the spirit of the holidays was certainly strong with them. It was as if this book had a magical spell over me. I felt so warm in my hear as I read it, and felt oh so happy. It was indeed a touching read. I very much enjoyed the author’s writing skills as well. Wonderful and perfect holiday read! Loved it!

Could not get enough of this book or the charming magic that it possessed over its reader. Perfect read for this time of year. Can’t say enough good things! Highly recommend this must read holiday book and author!

What a truly adorable story! Another one that Hallmark could make into a Christmas movie. Matthew & Savannah are a cute couple that meet through a bungled attempt to tell her that she would be perfect to play Mrs. Claus. Matthew fell in love with Savannah’s hair color. They are both older with grown kids, widows and deserve happiness. I love how this story is realistic, shares their struggles, and shows their happiness. Supporting characters like Fern are a blessing as she is a fascinating lady that should have her own story. The story is so well done. You have romance, friendship, cuteness, and Santa. The memories brought up through the setting of the store display can also bring back happy memories for readers. This is a wonderful holiday story. I will be buying some copies for gifts. I hope to see more from this author.

Carina is just trying to get back on her feet after the pandemic threw her life a curve ball. Max offers her the opportunity. This book is the best “feel good” that I have read this year. The writing is heartfelt. You can truly feel the emotions in the writing. She tries to get her husband and family together for a holiday. Who can’t relate to that? I never read the back because I always like to judge a book by my opinion. I went in wondering if this was an “age-gap” romance. I was so glad to see it was “second-chance” and a friendship one. The characters are all so special in this book. They each had their own role in the story. The storyline is exquisite and interesting. You can’t put the story down. You are pulled right in. Get a cup of cocoa and join everyone in town. That ending…..I love this book. Another I will be gifting to friends. A definite holiday must read.

This was such a perfect book, to bring forth the feeling associated with the holidays! The book was touching, strong and connecting characters, and a strong sense of the beautiful holiday spirit!

Carina was such a wonderful character, was very easily to connect to her. I think especially on how she endured the pandemic, and wanted nothing more than family time. It’s true though, with the pandemic we lost so many chances to be with loved ones, we need to embrace it now. I felt for Carina truly, trying to make plans and she was so full of festive spirit in her heart, and no one would budge for her. I found what she goes through, and comes out on top of, very sweet and touching. She grew her wings for sure, it was a beautiful read, touching, and perfect holiday read. Definitely a must read in my books Very much enjoyed it!

Such a sweet holiday story. Wonderful story and cast of characters. I think everyone grew in some shape or form, and established the meaning of the holidays. Highly recommend this must read book and author!

This contemporary romance is the first in the series and after reading it I personally can’t wait to see what happens in this story next. This contemporary romance has secrets, drama, chemistry and so much more that I found it hard to put it down. However I will warn you that this book does end with a cliff hanger which is personally driving me crazy. But I will be rereading it before I read book two just to get all of the amazing details. The characters were amazingly developed, and the plot has a little bit of something for everyone. So make sure you run out and pick up this contemporary romance today.

Lisa and her friends have had their Rom Com Movie nights since their younger days, and now in their 30s, they want to meet their romantic matches. Lisa had a rough childhood and finds it hard to trust anyone. Ryan has moved back home and has been burned in the romance department.
I really enjoyed this fun read. The story is lighthearted and filled with romantic tension. I enjoyed the characters, and the friendship Lisa and her friends shared. I also enjoyed the relationship that grew between Lisa and Ryan. The story was true to the rom com title.
I look forward to seeing who is featured in the next book in the series.

I love this book so much! Huge page turner for me and I couldn’t put it down. I’ve been in a reading slump and this was the book to pull me out of it! 😍😍 The connection Lisa has with her group of friends is absolutely AMAZING. The way they’re always looking out for each other and being their for one another is simply heart warming. Lisa had a rough child hood growing up. She didn’t have the family a lot of kids have. She was in and out of foster homes. Until one day as an adult, she met this group of 3 girls and they were inseparable ever since. You don’t see friendships as great as theirs and I adored every page I read. Then Lisa meets Ryan and it’s love at first sight! Lisa doesn’t think she deserves love and she thinks everyone is going to leave her, but Ryan makes it a point to make her BELIEVE she deserves everything good in life. It’s a really good book and I can’t wait for the second book to come out!!! I’ll be counting down the days. Highly recommend everyone to read this if you love a good rom com 😉

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book. Just the title of this book pulled me in, but let me tell you it was more than I hoped. There was a cute meet, misunderstandings, friends, family, and insta-love. Lisa and Ryan are perfect. The whole cast of characters is just wonderful. The only thing that I am upset about is that I have to wait a month before the next one comes out. If you love Rom Coms this book is for you.
